Daniel Pipes ably traces Europe's ongoing descent into Eurabia in FrontPage:
Two recent stories dramatically illustrate Europe’s looming immigration problem. One concerns a gang estimated to have smuggled 100,000 illegal immigrants, mainly Turkish Kurds, into Great Britain. These economic migrants paid between £3,000 and £5,000 to be transported via an elaborate and dangerous route. The Independent explains: “Their journeys lasted several weeks and involved safe houses, lorries with secret compartments and, in some cases, clandestine flights to airfields in the South-east.”
A senior British police source commented that “It’s a tortuous journey, full of discomfort and danger, but they are determined to get here, given the particular attraction of London’s established Turkish community.”
Turks are hardly alone in wanting access to Europe; the second story concerns human waves of impoverished sub-Saharan Africans storming and breaching fences to enter two tiny Spanish enclaves on the Mediterranean coast of Morocco, Ceuta and Melilla.Until recently, these Iberian vestiges of the Crusades appeared to be curious remnants of a bygone age. Now, however, they are (along with the Canary Islands, Lampedusa, and Mayotte) among the European Union’s most isolated and vulnerable entry points, stepping stones feeding illegal immigrants to the whole of the European Union.
Melilla is a town of 60,000 with a six-mile [ten-kilometer] border with Morocco, protected by Spanish Legion and Moroccan civil guard units, high fences bristling with razors, and the latest anti-personnel technology (sensor pads, movement detectors, spotlights, infrared cameras).
The typical African migrant travels across the Sahara desert to reach the Mediterranean coast, where he idles nearby until the right moment for a run to Spanish territory. “We were just tired of living in the forest,” explained a young man from Guinea-Bissau. “There was nothing to eat, there was nothing to drink.”
In mid-September, the Africans began assaulting the frontier en masse. Deploying crude ladders made of branches, they used their weight to bring the fences down in places. As one of them put it, “We go in a group and all jump at once. We know that some will get through, that others will be injured and others may die, but we have to get through, whatever the cost.”
The tactic works. When over 1,000 persons tried to enter Melilla at a single go in September, an estimated 300 succeeded. In early October, 650 persons ran for the fence and 350 are said to have made it. “There were just too many of us” to be stopped, observed one Malian. An estimated 30,000 more Africans await their turn.
The confrontation can resemble a pitched battle. The Africans throw rocks at the security forces, which respond with bayonets, shotguns, and rubber bullets. The assaults left about a dozen Africans dead, some trampled in the rush to Spanish territory, others shot by Moroccan police.
Madrid eventually prevailed on Rabat to crack down on the remaining Africans-in-waiting, which obliged by flying some 2,000 of them to their countries of origin and exiling another 1,000 to Morocco’s southern desert, far from the Spanish enclaves. The removal was done with some brutality, dumping the Africans and leaving them to fend off the harsh elements almost without help. But the unwelcome signal was received. “I will go back now,” said another Malian, in tears. “I will not try to come back. I am exhausted.”
Modern communications and transportation increasingly inspire Turks, Africans, and others (such as Mexicans) to leave their native lands, taking extreme risks if necessary, to reach the West’s near-paradise. In response, Europeans are baring their teeth, brushing aside multicultural pieties such as Kofi Annan’s statement that “What is important is that we don’t make a futile attempt to prevent people from crossing borders. It will not work.”
But preventing people from crossing borders is very much on the agenda; it is probably only a matter of time until other Western states follow Spain and Australia and resort to military force.
Giant smuggling rings and human waves cascading over fortified positions represent the starkest manifestations of profound and growing dilemmas: how islands of peace and plenty survive in an ocean of war and deprivation, how a diminishing European population retains its historic culture, and how states from Turkey to Mali to Mexico solve their problems rather than export them.
With no solutions in sight, however, there is every reason to expect these problems to worsen.
Many good links in the original.
It's interesting that Spain is using many of the same tactics as Israel in trying to secure its border. But I haven't noticed that anyone is accusing Spain of maintaining an "apartheid" fence even as it strengthens its fortifications to try to protect itself. Just another example of the relentless anti-Israel double-standard at work in Europe.
Anyone unfortunate enough to have been in certain areas of Londonistan, Birminghamistan, Bristolistan or any other major English city in the past year knows for a fact that when the Police & Government talk of a possible 100,000 illegal immigrants being smuggled in, they really mean in excess of 1,000,000.
The Government has woken up too late to the fact that if they do not know how many illegal immigrants we have allowed to get into England (& no-one is seriously suggesting that these illegals are heading for the Welsh Valleys or Scottish Highlands) then it stands to reason that we do not know how many terrorists we have in place here in England.
A friend of my daughter who has residency in Australia told me recently that her daughter, born in Australia last year (English Father) has no right to remain there & her daughter has no citizenship rights. How refreshing. Inspite of her angst to remain, I had to say "well, its their country - they owe you nothing".
How different it is on this side of the planet.
Anyone can be British.
Here in "Great Britain" you just have to turn up at the door & shout for your rights loudly in any language you happen to semi command - you'll be on benefits in your house with your EUrabian British Passport in no time - that's why they come. Easy money. Easy life.
I am not a racist, & I am certainly not an advocate of more multiculturalism as an experiment to be carried out on English soil. We have, afterall, seen the result of multiculturalism on 7/7/05.
Whilst recognising the valued contribution alot of immigrants have made to Britain & also recognising their loyalty & allegiance, the only culture that should be promoted in Britain is British - first & foremost. (We can argue about English independence & identity some other time).
On a separate note, AlBBCeera wants more viewing tax off all us British Taxpayers to pay for their left wing global media expansionist policy - under threat of prison if we refuse.
The BBC via the courts commits in excess of 300 British women a year to prison for non payment of the TV License fee.
Yes, the BBC needs the TV Tax from single British Mothers to pay for more foreign language websites, more foreign language radio stations, & many more programmes in other than the English language.
If it has long been said that there is no longer anything British about AlBBCeera, then there soon will not even be the promotion of the English language worldwide. At least when they used English as a first language in their foreign broadcasts, one could almost justify the horrendous expense. Almost.
Still, it'll be good for all those illegal immigrants to be able to listen / read / view the British News & weather reports in their own Mother tongue as they queue up in France for their short journey to a new life in the lovely happy melting pot of mediocrity & expediency that is today's Britain.
Yes,it is sweet irony that Spain, that bastion of leftism, is doubling the height of their wall, er fence, to 20 feet high to keep the Palestinians, er, Africans out of their country. Sweet irony indeed.
Spain give citizenship to 850,000 illegal immigrants earlier this year. That's the size an largish city. Spain has totally lost the plot. They shoot trespassers but give them papers if they make it through.
Can anyone suggest a nice place in Europe to raise a family? I was thinking Roumania or Poland. Should be OK for a couple of generations.
I also quite fancy Siberia.
I am curious which moderate muslims Daniel Pipes is hoping to reach out to. On the one hand he says the solution is islamic reformation, and on the other, he presents such a grim reality it all seems completely hopeless.
I'm with JW/DW on this. No Islam, even in moderation otherwise the future looks increasingly like this http://www.aes-group.org/ip.asp?number=15
Sebastien,
I don't think Robert and Hugh are advocating a total ban on Islam, at least they haven't said so publicly. Why they are taking this position only they could tell you, but my guess is that it has something to do about not wanting to be seen as too radical for the mainstream public.
Well I guess this makes me too extreme for this site :))
Well I guess this makes me too extreme for this site...
I'll put a clown hat, curly hair, and a winking smile onto that apt statement.
oops -- it didn't work -- i guess the clown hat throws off the html... anyway, how about this?

The vaunted Mr. Pipes needs to answer this question: How can any sane adult be moderate when he accepts God's commandment to kill Jews and Christians wherever he may find them, and also accepts God's commandment to revere and emulate a person who murdered, stole, kidnapped, raped, lied, cheated, committed adultery, ran a protection racket, ordered a mass murder, and the like?
He committed adultery too???
It gets worse and worse

Sebatien, respect what you have said, about Spain, they´re now legals, but not spanish. But it was a horrible mistake, because the Zapatero´s goverment have opened the door with these suicidals measures.
Instead of doing something about it, this senior cop simply accepts the situation.
Well London's established Turkish community has just got bigger, and as a consequence, a lot more attractive, given that the police and government, accept large scale invasions.
What is really hard to understand is that Britain is an island. If any nation can prevent people from deliberately breaking immigration laws, then it has to be an island state.
Albion - I love your posts! They're always so spot on. I'm one of the loyal immigrants who arrived in the fifties. Everyone integrated because they had to and most did very well.
Greetings Londongirl,
Reading back your posts I think that we think very much along the same lines.
I am sure we have a majority opinion - people always agree with common sense when it is pointed out to them, yet seem reluctant to seek it out for themselves....yet there are those.....
...I was engaged in conversation last night with two of the most dhimmi infected British citizens I have ever come across - they actually support the Lotto funding of bookshops like "Iqra" - the Londonistan bombers favourite bookshop & propaganda outlet. Their reasoning was this:
"Well, the West spends billions on its "propaganda" machine, so it stands to reason that we must allow a differing opinion held in the West by a sizeable minority access to funds to mount a counter argument".
.....& they kept a straight face when they delivered this to me.
.....so, we should fund the DVD duplication & distribution of Ken Bigleys beheading as a counter argument out of Lotto Funds to the Wests propaganda .
Albion. Did your common sense have any effect on these people? I find that my anti-islamic diatribes are now met with silence, rather than being accused of being a fascist. In a certain manner, I feel that this is an improvement.
I have also lent my P.I.G. to my multi culti neighbour. No news yet, but he is still talking to me, so maybe he hasn't read it yet.
I think what did it for me was the realization that the anti-reagan/thatcher peace marchers in the 1980s were dead wrong. These same protesters are wrong again, but even more dangerously so.
Greetings Sebastien
I am unsure if it had any effect. I am always calm when talking about Jihad - particularly to strangers. It is sooooo easy for them to peg one as a "Fascist / Nationalist / Racist (?)" when talking about the central tenets of Islam & how they relate to & are interpreted by todays "Western" Muslims.
Remaining calm, almost aloof, when talking about Islam in strange company is the best way I have found. Draws others in if you seem educated on the subject, but rather disinterested.
I did slip them the web addresses for DW / JW - I really must have some cards made up, I must write the address 20 - 30 times a week.
I think todays "peaceniks" are more dangerous - because they would side with the devil if he was wearing a STOP BUSH teeshirt.
Sorry, got to go, I am reliably informed that apparently KT is attacking me on the "Sudan" thread.
Best regards
Albion
Thank you to our friends on the other side of the "pond". As an American, I really enjoy hearing what is going on in our struggle against jihad in the UK and Europe. Please keep the news coming in.
