THE diehard gang of Muslim extremists responsible for last week’s attack on the southern Russian city of Nalchik consisted mainly of local militants intent on creating a strict Islamic state independent of Moscow, according to security sources in the region.The disclosure that the gunmen were not sent from the war-torn republic of Chechnya but belonged to a group from Kabardino-Balkaria, the Russian republic of which Nalchik is the capital, will be of great concern to the Kremlin.
It provides alarming evidence that far from dying down — as claimed by President Vladimir Putin — the bloody Chechen conflict is spreading.“Most of the militants who were killed and those caught alive are local,” said an officer with the Nalchik anti-terrorism police unit. “ The ferocity of the attacks has shocked the city.”
The onslaught, which turned the town of 280,000 into a war zone, was the most daring raid by pro-Chechen Islamic militants since last year’s Beslan school siege in which 330 hostages were killed. It came less than a month before parliamentary elections in Chechnya, hailed by Putin as evidence that the region is becoming stable.
Yep. It's not just Chechnya anymore. After Kalbardino-Balkaria, look for Dagestan to blow up.
The collapse of the Soviet empire created a vacuum on the periphery that was destabilizing to say the least. How many conflicts erupted? Armenia-Azerbaijan, Georgia-Abkhazia, the Tajik Civil War and the Chechen War just to name the most prominent.
Imagine the vacuum created if Russia itself dissolves from centrifugal pressures...it will make the break-up of Yugoslavia look positively tame.
Mr Spencer continues to advocate for geo-political alliances between America and non-Islamic entities such as India and Russia. This is just common sense.
It's high-time we recognize that Russia is the target of jihadist violence no less virulent than that facing America and Europe. It's high-time we stop lecturing Russia about Chechen sensibilities.
I agree with Cornelius. We should stop lecturing Russia about Chechen sensibilities. The Russians are facing a major Muslim problem. Yet, why do they continue to supply nuclear information and/or components to Iran? From what I read, they are helping Iran with nuclear production. Don't the Russians ever consider that the Iranians, with the bomb in their hands, would be more than happy to help their Muslim Chechen brothers in bombing Russia into submission?
When do these attacks stop being isolated incidents and are seen as a war on western civilization?
It is not only the anti-Communists, but the "humanitarians" and the Islamic mouth pieces like Suleyman Ahmad Stephen Schwartz who support the Russian Jihad.
It is normal for Muslims to support the creation of a new Muslim State, but how short-sighted could Westerners get, to support the dismemberment of Russia?
So I wonder what the classic Russian response to this revolt will be. Spying on more synagogues, perhaps? Maybe more antisemitic sentiments from the Russian Orthodox church?
Wouldn't surprise me much, because there's such a lack of desire to protect our civilization from the shadow of the crescent that our response in the West would be hardly any different.

It's amazing and disturbing how many Muslim terrorist acts a country can take without waking up. Russia over the past few years has had the equivalent of SEVERAL 911s -- at least 2 or 3 major jet liners crashed by terrorists; the Beslan school massacre; hospitals taken over by terrorist with attendant mass murders; a rock concert suicide bombed; an apartment complex suicide bombed; the Moscow Theater seige -- and yet, they have not declared outright war on Muslims, begun deportations, and knocked down mosque doors. Simply mind-boggling.
If the hard-bitten Russians less afflicted with PC blinders can't get tough, it bodes ill for Western Europe and North America.

Christian church in Russia is one of the main problems. Russian Orthodox Church and Islam have one thing in common – anti-semetism. “An enemy of my enemy – is my friend” – that is the view of the Russian Orthodox Church. Strengthening Christianity in Russia is strengthening Islam.
Chechnya already had a spell of "independence" and turned into the kidnap capital of the world, rather like Iraq has become of late. Russia was doling out millions of dollars in ransom money.

Sorry, unaha, but the Iranians are helping the Sunni "insurgency" out in Iraq by providing them with the roadside explosives being used to blow up Coalition troops. Depending on what's at stake, I wouldn't discount the possibility of the Iranians helping out the jihadists in the former USSR if it suits their purposes once they have what they need from Yeltsin & Co.
The follies stemming from the ignorance and power-mongering that have long characterized Russian society and governmment are finally catchimg up with them. Now, I wouldn't wish an Islamic Holy War on anyone except a Muslim, but I can't say I would be very sorry to see Russia go up flames, given that this country has:
1-) Nurtured and voiced vast anti-American sentiments;it has pretended to be an American ally and then stabbed us in the back at every chance it got.
2-) Tolerated a govermment that has deliberately helped arm one of the world's most dangerous regimes (the Iranian mullahs) with weapons of mass destruction which it knew would make extensive use of at the earliest opportunity. In doing this, Russia (and China) are virtually holding the world hostage.
3-) Colluded with China's government to undermine the United States' economic and political status-- to further its own ambitions on the world stage and while trying to appear a friend to the United States, which it clearly isn't.
4-) Plotted attacks on America including an aborted nuclear strike against Hawaii's Pearl Harbor military base in 1968 (from a submarine).
5-) Sponsored islamic terrorism at least into the 1980s.
6-) Persecuted Jewish people ruthlessly.
7-) Still lacks a respect for human life as can be seen in the activities in its organized crime cartels which it repeatedly has shown an inability or unwillingness to control.
8-) Almost certainly supplied al-Qaeda with nuclear devices (deliberately or not) and has yet to make reparations to the international community for this any of the other grievamces I have mentioned here.
Russia has made the world a far more dangerous place than was necessary in order further its political agenda. It will pay for that in accordance with the laws of karma.
Waterdragon, Their purpose is to tie down the American army in Iraq. They know they are enemies of America - have been called axis of evil - and are acting against their enemy. They have no interest is setting up a Sunni Islamic state in Russia, no interest in antagonising Russia.

Russia STARTED THE COLD WAR. America did not. I can tell you are not aware of this. For you, the world's problems began 5 years ago.
Amercia was put on the defensive by Soviet war tactics around the world. America does not have an ideology to impose on the world. Russia did and still does. That ideology is called COMMUNISM. Communism in the 20th century murdered more people than the US population in the 1960s.
Democracy is the absence of ideology. The individual is left to make the decisions a governmment imposed ideology would otherwise make for him. So forget about trying to nail America on that one. Democracy frees people from ideology. Even in places like Iraq.
Americans are not getting 'all defensive'. You simply do not want to listen to what they have to say. I know why too.
Why? Because it is much more important for you to impose your personal ideology on them. Rewriting and taking historical events out of the context (which is the only way you could have come up with a statement like the one you made)in which they happened is essential to such efforts.
As for Saddam Hussein, France, Germany, and Russia were all far more culpable in arming him than America was. And most liberals will agree that Saddam Hussein didn't threaten anyone anyway. So he didn't qualify by liberal standards as 'one of the world's most dangerous regimes.'
America did NOT launch pre-emptive NUCLEAR STRIKES FROM SUBMARINES as Russia attempted in 1968 (in a submarine designed to resemble a Chinese sub).
America did not arm a regime as dangerous as that of the Iranian mullahs.
Russia and China armed Iran with nuclear technology. Iran WILL use them. America had NOTHING AT ALL TO DO WITH THIS. Iran acted on its own to acquire this technology and Russia and China were more happy to give it to them.
Russia also armed now-Commuinist Venezuela with 100,000 ak-47s. Russia clearly is destabilizing the world for its own agenda. America is not, unless you call democracy and human rights an agenda. Believe me, you couldn't get that lucky to have an agenda like that imposed on you.
America does not possess a national Mafia" like the Chinese 'triad' or the 'red mafia'. And so it does not participate in human trafficking and other Third World criminal activities. America is NOT the Third World...
