TORONTO - A newly disclosed Canadian intelligence study says al-Qaeda might try to spread the deadly avian flu virus as part of its campaign to sow terror in Western nations.The report by the federal government's Integrated Threat Assessment Centre describes the avian flu as a "potential terrorist-induced" pandemic and specifically mentions Osama bin Laden.
"It is significant to note that Osama bin Laden views chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear weapons as legitimate," says the report, titled "Pandemics: Avian Flu."
"In addition, Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda representatives have repeatedly named Canada as a target," it says under the heading "Biology and Terrorism."

CDC is the Centre for Disease Control in the US. I gather we have a Canadian counterpart located in one of the western provinces, Manitoba. I can't confirm the name however, or anything said about it. Try searching the Globe and Mail's website (www.theglobeandmail.com).
I sure am glad that the scientists involved decided to publish the avian flu's genetic structure on the Internet.

Pew went pretty easy on its Arabist self in choosing nations to poll. Only Jordan and Pakistan are full-bore dog kennels. Morroco, Turkey, Lebanon, and Indonesia are more bark-bark than WOOF-WOOF.
Imagine the results if you throw in the likes of Saudi Arabia, Iran, Yemen, Egypt, Libya, Algeria, and such ilk.

Does anyone else wonder why on earth CAnada is a major target? Islam is taught in our public schools, one can be acused of committing a hate crime for speaking out against Muslim terror, an entire section of my city has signs only in Arabic, social service agencies are given barrels of money in order to "properly service immigrant communities" (just don't try getting any social services if you are not an immigrant...) - what on earth could they want which they don't already have here? Oh, let's not forget that immigration is being opened up (story from two days ago) in order to decrease the waiting time faced by immigrants from the Middle EAst- we wouldn't want to be unfair or anything, and screen new arrivals.

Back around 7/7, some of the "justifiers" cited Britain's role in ceding part of the Holy Land to the Zionist entity, so maybe they are also aggrieved that Canada voted for the creation of the State of Israel (and may have even moved the resolution). Hate crime, hate speech laws, yet another case of adverse unintended consequences. The only successful use of said laws in Canada, to my knowledge, was their employment against the Holocaust Denier Ernst Zuendel.
You see these laws were not enacted to protect Muslims, but were enacted to protect Jews and people of color, now they are being employed to protect the most antisemitic peoples on earth.. the Muslims.
Not just in Canada, but in England and continental Europe.

A global epidemic is more likely to kill millions in the cities of developing countries than the West. What kind of Islamic force field is going to stop Avian Flu reaching Islamabad or Jakarta?
I wonder if the "avian flu" can be transmitted from birds to humans via mosquito bite like West Nile is. Nearly all the mosquitos that have been tested in my city are positive for WN. If it can be spread the same way, we may really be in for it. Any epidemiologists out there?

Falconry and the raising of homing pigeons are great sports in the middle east.
In the States, some pigeon fanciers will let out a big flock when another fancier is flying a few birds in training, in hopes that his flock will "capture" the few, thereby increasing his own flock and training the new birds to his own loft. This practice is common amongst the Arab pigeon fanciers, who think it is clever to steal that way, according to the reports and scuttlebutt that have come to me. I think this is common in England and Australia, too.
It is nothing to raise a homing pigeon to fly several hundred miles.
Of course, if one wanted he could infect untrained birds and release them in any city park, where they could mingle with the wild flocks and contaminate all the birds in the city. Wild pigeons nest in old buildings and under bridges, and could spread disease very easily.
My own birds are kept for the time when it will be necessary to have a cheap early warning of poison gas. In the meantime, I watch for symptoms of other things. They will be burned and buried on the way to the fallout shelter.
The Canadian birds that have the flu virus are mostly wild ducks. These will be migrating down the Mississippi Flyway in another month or so, all the way to the rice fields of coastal Texas and Louisiana. Duck and goose season will be opening soon, so hunters will be afield and plucking their harvest. It should be an interesting winter.
