Arabic Army interpreter from Brooklyn may have aided Iraqi jihad

Then the moderate Muslims over at CAIR and MPAC charge us with "Islamophobia" if we raise questions about the loyalty of Muslims in America. Yet such questions are entirely legitimate, and becoming more urgent. "Interpreter From Brooklyn Accused Of Aiding Iraqi Insurgency," from AP, with thanks to Cindy:

NEW YORK -- An Arabic interpreter for the Army may have secretly helped Iraqi insurgents by improperly taking classified documents from Iraq home to Brooklyn, where he made dozens of phone calls to numbers linked to the insurgency, a federal prosecutor said Monday....

Using the name Almaliki Nour, the man became a legal resident of the U.S. in 1993 and went to work for a defense contractor a decade later as a translator for an intelligence unit of the 82nd Airborne Division, according to an FBI complaint.

As he worked in Iraq, the FBI and Department of Defense discovered that he had fabricated his name, birth date, native country, Lebanon, and family background as the persecuted son of a Muslim father and Catholic mother, the complaint said.

Investigators probing the fabrications then discovered that he had extensive ties to people linked to the Iraqi insurgency. His cell phone address book contained two coded entries with the numbers of known insurgents, Assistant U.S. Attorney John Buretta said Monday.

After returning to the U.S. earlier this year, the man had more than 100 cell phone conversations with numbers directly involved with the insurgency, Buretta said, including numbers found at suspected safehouses for Jordanian extremist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the leader of al-Qaida in Iraq.

The man, who has told the FBI he is a Moroccan named Noureddine Malki, also improperly took to his Brooklyn apartment classified documents about combating the insurgency, including one, Buretta said, that contained the heading "current threat."

as a former member of the us navy, i would say it's time for a firing squad.

There are all kinds of non-Islamic native speakers of Arabic who could have, if asked, no doubt asked this man some questions, about Lebanon and his supposed background (for example, his knowledge of Catholicism from that "Catholic" mother of his), and even from listening to him speak likely have discovered an accent and even dialectal words that would betray if not his precise Moroccan origins, then at least that he was not from Lebanon.

How much more Keystone-Koppery must there be, at every level? True, at long last he was caught, but that hardly makes up for the fact that he had already made, apparently, 100-odd phone calls to enemies in Iraq, and had provided information to them about the layout of bases, and the routine and modus operandi of those American soldiers for whom he interpreted, and even possibly the names of informants (after all, he might well have been interpreting their remarks) who were giving information to the Americans and could then be killed. And by the way, when is that ex-Marine, the deserter now apparently in Lebanon, going to be extradited for trial and punishment here in the United States?

His case hasn't been forgotten. And one hopes that the government has decided to drop the insistence -- or was there never such insistence -- that he be sent back here, so he can prove to his heart's content the truth of his seemingly sincere insistence that he was "Semper Fi." Yes, but "semper fi" to what and to whom?

umm, why aren't these "known insurgents" that this traitor is contacting not in a Guantanamo cell?

I was a computer network engineer for 10 years. I was arrested on federal charges (hacking) and spent two weeks in federal custody.

I was the only white guy there. 75% were Mexican nationals held on immigration charges. They were always released. The other 25% were Muslims in the USA illegally. I told them I was Christian and witnessed to them. They ignored me - Jihad was all they wanted to focus on.

These people are relentless. As much as us Christians believe in Love and reconciliation - they believe in killing unbelievers and causing problems for non-Islamic societies. If we don't engage this religious war, we are all lost - all of us.

This is a war between good and evil - a war between the followers of evil and the defenders of the faith.

Who will join the fight?

rafael699:

There are a lot of us already in the fight. My wife and I were listening to the news on the car radio this evening, about the rioting in France.

She said this news frightened her and she reminded me to stock up on ammunition. This created considerable anxiety for a minute. I didn't know whether she was referring to .223 Remington (or the cheaper 5.56mm Winchester); .380 Auto; 9mm Parabellum; .308 NATO; 7 x 39mm Soviet; .38 Special; .357 Magnum; .45 ACP; 12 Gauge Buckshot; or .22 Long Rifle. I'm not going to bother with the 6.5mm Swedish; .30 Mauser; .32 Colt; or the .30-06 Springfield.

By the time I got through the list, however, I felt considerably better.

Instead, I'm going to concentrate on educating my friends. Unfortunately, I have already destroyed one friendship. Too bad, but it was probably a hopeless cause trying to convince a liberal jewish psychologist that there is a danger on the horizon. "But they're human beings, TOO!!" I'm licked on that one.

Better to find out right now who is going to share the canned goods and the fallout shelter when the spaghetti hits the fan.

BTW--which detention center were you in, and what happened to your case? And are you good enough to hack into some islamic websites and databases? Can you do it without getting caught again? Can you offer your services to the FBI in return for leniency?

I have posted on this site some month ago about the problem of Muslim interpreters and translators who are sabotaging our War effort. I have seen it with my own eyes and I have seen the non-response of our counter-intelligence people. Most Muslim interpreters, even if they were not saboteurs, are incompetent, lazy, and they form up ethnic sectarian clichés which harass the non-Muslim interpreters.

Depending on their ethnic, tribal, and sectarian allegiances, they side with their own in the very common disputes which the Military is forced to mediate, increasing anti-American feelings. The stupid screeners reject Christians because they are honest about their backgrounds and they have something called a conscious.

The recruiters and staff of the companies hiring and testing linguists have a Muslim majority. Muslims get the nest and safest assignments with intelligence units and paper pushing outfits. The Christians like my friends were selected for the harshest most hazardous assignments.

or better yet, collecting their raisons.

The tragic irony.
I know of (at my university) at least 75-100 Arab Jews (fully fluent in Arabic and Farsi) who would just love to replace the Muslims in the government, and not to mention help get revenge on those who drove them out of their homes in the first place.

Why are we still hiring Muslims translators again? Is it some kind of traitor affirmative action?

I was having that problem too??

So I decided I didn't want to be surching for the right ammo for the right weapon Talked to my neighbors dicided what they had and bought things that can be shared and ammo works for multipul so now when I buy something new I always think about will that work with that kind of like buying a new handbag to go with shoes it is all about the colors matching must be a girl thing??

Still have my favorite toys but buy things that can be shared Some of the neighbors will not be much help in the fight but can always carry and reload and of course the doc can always come in handy??

Believe me those without will help if things get like they did in the 91 L.A. Roits or even what is happening in France right now has a way of changing minds real fast!!

someone was talking earlier about small armys not being able to get the job done??

Guess they have not been keeping up on current events it was a pretty small force that just librated 50,000,000 people in 2 different countries??

When you comare it to the force it took in WW2 just look at how many Americans Died on Okanowio what was it 70,000 Americans??

I have also joined the fight and my weapon is the truth about the nature of islam and the Jihad that is being waged against the world.

Since I have family and friends in Europe the burning of France has galvanized me almost as much as 911.

Yes let's fight! ,spread the truth, convert one more person to the anti-Jihadi blogs!

I have personally given as away many PIG book as I can, and turn one more fellow infidel to this site, everyday.

I look at my children and have pledge that I will fight as Christian, as a Westerner and as a citizen of the World.

France is burning, but the fight has just begun.

Thank you Hugh and Robert for the lessons you bring to us everyday and for the marvelous work at JIhadwatch.

Like the man my ansestors followed, El Cid campeador lets drive them to were they came from.

Sharku:

Yeah those beautiful, seductive, dewey- eyed virgin raisens that were somehow mistaken as houris by the culturaly insensitive west.

Here's an insiders view of why this U.S. Moroccan in origin translator and the U.S. MILINT establishment is totally screwed up and could get away with passing info onto the insurgtents in Iraq.

Read it and you'll be stunned.

"This shows a lot of things:

- The Army is so desperate for translators that they will send someone to a unit before finishing the vetting. I was recently offered $160,000 to do a year in Iraq as a translator. The recruiter used the word “desperate” freely. The good side is that FBI and DoD did do the checking.

-

- The 82nd allowed itself to be sweet talked by this guy into gaining access to classified documents. There is the possibility that physical security was so bad that the Moroccan just walked into classified spaces, but the pattern I saw in Iraq was that infiltrators “cheezed up” to their commanders and wrapped them around their finger. There was no reason to allow him access to classified documents.

- The 82nd, whatever previous glory it once held, is a basket case. There are other reasons for my assessment, but I will limit it to the infiltration issue here. The unit initially occupied the post, “Camp Falcon,” that I work on with the First Cavalry Division. They had the brilliant idea of hiring truckloads of locals as a means to get cash into the economy and freeing up troops for patrol duty. Cut to a year later when our team finally did a thorough screening (not a half-hour chit-chat) of these same local hires. Out of 500 screens, 150 were deemed security threats, and about 30 were arrested on the spot when their cover stories became completely unraveled.

- I think is was Maria Sliwa who put out a report on jihadist plans to kill off translators working with the U.S. so we would be isolated from the population. In just the eight months I was in Baghdad, 50 loyal Iraqis at our base were murdered for the sin of collaboration.

- Another related issue is that the security questionnaire for a clearance does not ask “In which religious facility do you worship?” Islam, being a political ideology using the cover of a religion, can skirt this issue. My feeling is there are probably some hard-nosed agents out there who manage to get this information indirectly. Knowing where someone goes to mosque is key data in determining whether a Muslim gets a clearance."

One usually thinks of naivete as being associated with young girls. But when one thinks of the kind of young girls turned out today, with their calculation, all moue and midriff in the Britney Spears calculated manner, perhaps young girls are no longer the models of the naive and innocent that they were once taken to be.

I have a new candidate for the Model of Innocence: the United States Military. Not every officer, or every man. But consider that there is no discussion, no analysis, no teaching about Islam at Fort Jackson, or at Fort Bragg, or anywhere else, before the soldiers go off to Iraq. Why not? Because the subject is too hot to handle. Because if we are there to "help the wonderful Iraqis" then it would not do to explain to the soldiers that these wonderful Muslim Iraqis subscribe to a belief-system that inculcates permanent hostility to Infidels, which is to say, them, and it would not do not to trust the handful of one's Muslim soldiers either, such as the man who killed two officers in his unit, and attempted to kill many more, or the marine who deserted with his equipment to Lebanon, and then, when he finally was returned to the United States to be charged, he nonetheless managed to escape to Lebanon again, and then there is the still-incomplete case of a Muslim sailor on a ship who made contact with Muslims in Iraq (what has become of that story? Or for that matter, the marine in Lebanon?).

And now the interpreter in Brooklyn, who lied in obvious ways, about big things that might easily have been checked -- was his accent Moroccan or Lebanese? Could he answer detailed questions aobut his supposed Lebanese home, or was he strangely unable to answer such questions as "when did Lebanon become independent" and "who is Charles Malik" and "how do the Druse dress" and "where is Hamza Street, and what's on it," and what is "the Corniche" and why are there cedars on the Lebanese flag, and what did Lebanon agree to at Taif and can you give us a few typical Lebanese expressions, and how do you make this particular most typically Lebanese of dishes -- whatever it is -- and so on. Surely there are all sorts of Maronites, perfectly able to do the checking (oh, they can wear masks while the interrogation is taking place) as to those who claim to be from Lebanon, and no doubt there are Jews who grew up in Morocco who can do the same for that country, and there are Copts for Egypt, and in France the security services use disaffected Berbers, resentful of Arab Islam, and... well, you get the idea. You get it, but apparently the FBI and the CIA and the 82nd Airborne didn't and possibly still don't.

The officers and men have to be taught much mnore about Islam, and about the way in which Muhammad's insistence that "war is deception" is put into practice, not only through the taqiyya and kitman that are second nature, but even the nonsense, rumors, and lies that are so readily spread and accepted in societies where the entire belief-system manages to discourage, at every step, free and skeptical inquiry, so that in every area of life, people are willing to believe all sorts of things. That would explain, would it not, how the American soldiers are quickly blamed when terrorists kill a dozen children to whom those soldiers had been distributing candy, and how every sort of idiotic rumor is easily spread and believed.

If the entire American army, and the security services, are not to be taught -- and not by apologists for Islam, and certainly not by Muslims themselves -- and at this point it is worth reminding ourselves that a certain participant in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing was an Egyptin who had served in the U.S. army where his task was to insruct his fellow soldiers about Islam. Perfect.

It is not yet known, it may never be known, what the interpreter back in Brooklyn phoned to his co-religionists in Iraq. Did he give them information on the layout of American bases, on the paths of patrols, on the soldiers' routines? Did he give them the names of Iraqis who were supplying the Americans with truthful information? Did he warn people that the Americans were hot on their trail? God knows. But we know that those who did not subject this interpreter, and all the army of interpreters and translators, those who on the spot in Iraq saw no reason not to trust him -- when of course the fact of Islam itself should put one permanently on guard.

Perhaps the army, if it decides to teach it ssoldiers, not only those who have gone to or are going to Iraq, but all of them, making sure that the information is conveyed unemotionally, but truthfully, so that no attack from CAIR or its agents within the military can protest. Wherever possible, the texts themselves should be used -- passages in the Qur'an, stories in the Hadith, the details of Muhammad's life as recognized by Believers, and frequently referred to. Perhaps Al-Qaradawi's guide to what is Halal and what Haram can also be assigned. But none of the bowdlerized "Approaching the Qur'an" and nothing by anyone who directly or indirectly has received Arab or Muslim money (that would leave out, I'm afriad, Mr. Esposito and his coffee-table guides to nothing and nowhere, except possibly to more funding from abroad for his "Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding"). Let the main texts be the Qur'an, the Hadith, the Sira. And do not leave out either the studies of how Infidels have been treated, over 1350 years, in all the lands conquered by Muslims, or such recent compilations of important past scholarship as "The Legacy of Jihad." No more of those absurd reading lists for General Vines that could only have been concocted by the likes of Esposito or others at Georgetown, whehter at the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies (such as Michael Hudson) or at the Foreign Service Institute or whatever it's called (Peter Bechtold). These people are the ones who have a history of misleading Infidels about Islam; not only should they not be taken as a guide, but they ought to be vetted,in the same way that the interpreter just arrested in Brooklyn ought to have been vetted.

"Innocents Abroad" was a fitting Mark Twain title about American tourists on their first trip to the Old World. "Innocence-- a Broad?" might be how a Damon Runyon character would mangle it, both giving voice to, and undercutting, the idea that women are more innocent than men.

The refusal, out of a seeming tongue-tiedness, of the Army and other services to teach, truly, about Islam, instead of offering the most hasty summary that will of course leave out all the important stuff and stick merely to the Five Pillars -- has consequences. Even the failure to explain just Muslim terrorists have willingly behaved elsewhere, has cost American lives. One of the first successful suicide bombings in Iraq involved what appeared to be a pregnant woman in a car (she may well have been pregnant). Apparently no one had taught the American soldiers that the Israelis had had their own sorrowful experiences as a result of trusting such "pregant women" and treating them sympatheticaly. Why not? Why should not every trick and stratagem used by Muslims anywhere in the world be quickly relayed to the armed forces, and security services, of Infidels all over the world? And why should Islam continue to be protected, by French, or English, or Spanish, or American officials, too timid, or too dumb, or too something to tell the truth, or even to let others do so in their stead?

During the Gilded Age, when newly-rich American tourists would wend their sometimes boorish ways (not everyone could be Edith Wharton or Henry James) through the Old World, Mark Twain used the notion for the title of a novel: "Innocents Abroad." A little twist to it, possibly by a character in Damon Runyon, and we can read it as an interrogative: "Innocence -- A Broad?" But now, to our embarrassment, we must admit that not the crass tourist, not the smelliing-salts-and-crinoline professional ingenue, but rather rough tough soldiers in army boots, and F.B.I. agents, and C.I.A. agents, have been snookered, wooed and won, and again snookered, by Muslims --they need not be agents, they need not be members of any organized group, they need only be willing to demonstrate, in whatever way they can, their loyalty to the sole community that, according to Islam, can make any true claim to that loyalty -- the umma al-islamiyya, the Community of Believers.

Yes, Innocents Abroad -- and at home, too.
