Dr. Andrew Bostom, author of the excellent new collection, The Legacy of Jihad, defines what is meant by the term "Eurabia" (first coined by the estimable Bat Ye'or) in The American Thinker:
The flames consuming thousands of automobiles, and the occasional bus, nursery, warehouse, and school across France are the result of tragic – in the original sense of the word – set of decisions made by the leaders of Europe, motivated by greed, jealousy, and hubris. The dream of a Europe restored to preeminence, isolating and vanquishing the upstart Americans, via a rock-solid alliance with the Arab world, has become a nightmare. The French cannot acknowledge their problem precisely because they cannot admit the folly of the policies pursued for the last three decades as the bedrock of their highest diplomatic, political, and economic ambitions.The intifada raging in France for almost three weeks, has been characterized by overwhelmingly Muslim rioters engaged in acts of wanton destruction, punctuated by claims of “territorial control” over sections of various French cities. In the context of this ongoing havoc, one sees repeated references to the term “Eurabia” by journalists and other media and academic elites, who, almost without exception, have no idea about the concrete origins, or significance of this term.
The use of the term “Eurabia”, as noted by the scholar Bat Ye’or (in her seminal analysis, Eurabia-The Euro-Arab Axis, released earlier this year) was first introduced, triumphally, in the mid-1970s, as the title of a journal edited by the President of the Association for Franco-Arab Solidarity, Lucien Bitterlein, and published collaboratively by the Groupe d’Etudes sur le Moyen-Orient (Geneva), France-Pays Arabes (Paris), and the Middle East International (London).
The articles and editorials in this publication called for common Euro-Arab positions, at every level – social, economic, and commercial – and were contingent upon the fundamental political condition of European support for the Arab (and non-Arab) Muslim umma’s jihad against Israel. These concrete proposals were not the musings of isolated theorists – they in fact represented policy decisions conceived in conjunction with, and actualized by, European state leaders, their ministers of foreign affairs, and European Parliamentarians...

Online Workshop Part 2: Can Eurabia Still be Averted?
Historian Bat Ye'or, who first coined the term "Eurabia", thinks that Europe's ties with the Arab-Islamic world are now so firmly entrenched and established that Eurabia is an irreversible fact. Europe will cease to be a Western, democratic continent, and will become an appendix to the Arab world, a civilization of dhimmitude employed to spread Jihad and further the cause of Islam on a global basis, while the original, non-Muslim population are held hostage in their own countries out of fear of Muslim violence. Do you think this is true, or can Eurabia still be reversed and Europe salvaged?
I must admit there are certain parts of Europe that do seem to be beyond hope, or very close to it. ALL of the largest Dutch cities are projected to have a Muslim majority within a generation, as will several English, French, Belgian, Scandinavian and Spanish cities. I forsee several possible scenarios:
1. Eurabia.
The EU continues its transformation into a continent-wide organization with clear totalitarian leanings, and a very pro-Islamic stance. Europe's fate is sealed when Turkey is allowed into the Union, and becomes its largest member. Eurabia will become a global center for Jihad activities across the planet, as the dhimmi taxpayers and infidel Western technology give a boost to the Ummah. For this reason, the Americans, the Israelis, the Indians, the Russians, and maybe even the Chinese will have to crush Eurabia by brute force, as it will represent a grave security threat for them.
Muslims will be heavily concentrated in the major cities, and the dhimmi native population will retreat into the countryside. I believe something similar took place in the Balkans during Ottoman Turkish rule. The old nation states will thus slowly die, as their major cities, which constitute the brain and "head" of its culture, are cut off from the rest of the body. Europe's decline into Eurabia will be speeded up by the fact that millions of educated natives with the means to it will move to the USA or other nations. This trickle of Eurabian refugees wil eventually be slowed down by the authorities in the now totalitarian Europe, as it will erode the tax base. Native Europeans will simply be banned from leaving. There will be no war in Western Europe, as its civilization is already dead and very few will bother fighting for it. The only violence will be sporadic Islamic terror attacks to induce fear, and occasional Muslim mob assaults in European streets to remind the dhimmis who is boss. It is conceivable that the center of European civilization will move from Western Europe to Eastern Europe, but even Eastern Europe will be put under severe pressure from Muslims, both in the Middle East and in the West.
2. War.
Personally, I think this alternative is at least as likely as the above. It also contains several sub-scenarios, partly depending upon when the eventual war starts, and partly on whether there is still some Western pride and resistance left in Europe underneath the rabble of self-loathing and Multiculturalism:
The Pakistanization of Europe.
Muslims aren't numerous enough to control the entire continent. In the event of war, there will be mutual ethnic cleansing and Muslims will seize parts of Western Europe. For instance, a belt stretching from parts of Germany via Belgium and Holland to France, but maybe even regions within certain nation states. All of Europe will not be lost, but some parts will, and many others will de deeply damaged by the fighting. Much of our cultural treasures will burn. How things will go from there is difficult to predict. Perhaps this new "Pakistan" in the heart of Europe will be the source of constant instability and the staging ground for Jihad incursions into infidel areas, just as Pakistan is to India now. Perhaps we will see a slow reconquest of this area, possibly taking generations or even centuries.
Reconquista - The Second Expulsion of the Moors
Muslims strike too early, before they are ready to seize control over major chunks of Europe. It is possible to view the Jihad riots in France in this light. They overestimate their own power, and underestimate the strength that, despite everything, is still left in Europe. Once a full-blown civil war starts in one country, it can, and probably will, spread to other countries. We are now witnessing an example of this, as smaller "sympathy riots" have been staged by Muslims in Belgium, Holland, Germany and Denmark. Given the European Union's borderless nature, it is unlikely that war will be limited to one nation only. This will create a domino effect, and Muslims will be expelled from Europe yet again, after millions of dead spread out across the continent.
Global Civil War
Europe has been the primary staging ground for one cold and two hot world wars. It could be a major battlefield in an Islamic world war, too. A world war is already simmering, with Muslims clashes against Russia, Europe, Israel, India, the USA and Southeast Asia. Once the fighting starts in Europe, it could spread outside the continent and ingnite a world war. This is the scenario that DP111 calls a "global civil war". It will become the worst and most destructive war in human history, involving nuclear weapons on both sides. It could completely destroy the Middle East and North Africa, deeply damage Europe, the Indian continent, and parts of Southeast Asia, and inflict serious casualties on the USA, Australia and Africa. Its secondary and economic ripples will be felt on all corners of the planet, uncluding the ones least involved in the actual fighting, such as Latin America and East Asia.
3. A Second Renaissance - Western Rebirth in Europe
Although I must admit that I find this scenario to be the least likely at this point, we should discuss the possibility of whether the Islamic threat will force the West to rethink its values and regain its strength. Can this be done, and how would this take place? Is it possible to avoid both major war and Eurabia or is this wishful thinking by now? The growth of Eruabia is closely tied to the growth of the EU. Perhaps we could derail Eurabia by dismantling the EU?
Dr. Bostom explains: "Eurabia is also based on a vision of Christian-Muslim reconciliation.."
Could the core delusion be more succinct?

You are right in one sense. However, assimilation takes time, and dumping large numbers of people from other countries with systemtic problems (such as corruption in Mexico) invariably leads to problems for the host country. And there is the issue of rapid population growth and environmental quality. I for one cringe at the idea of another 33 million people in my already overcrowded, overpriced state (which is the offical DOF population projection). Loss of productive farmland to housing, damage to the natural water balance in the arid west, wildlife habitat destruction, the list is long and daunting. The problems with Mexican assimilation are different then the Islamic assimilation issue, but can still lead to balkanization and damage/destruction of the host culture. I live in CA, and you see this on a daily basis, particularly in our educational system. Not to mention the expensive social services a glut of poor, uneducated immigrants will require. For example, a recent study on the American "crisis" in health care coverage revealed the majority of the uninsured are illegals (surprise). Sure, let's make them legal and eligble for Medical! California doesn't already have a budget problem, does it?
However, the biggest problem is that the bill allows for chain migration. Do you think that Muslims here in the US will pass up the opportunity to have extended family members move to Dar el Harb? Our Muslim population will go up, perhaps significantly. And so will our problems-we'll begin to resemble Europe in that respect.
This bill will also so overwhelm our current govt immigration workforce, I will bet dollars to donuts plenty of "bad guys" will get through.
We need limited, selective immigration from countries that are not terrorist enablers.
I disagree somewhat with Bat Ye'or's assessment of Eurabia's destiny. History shows that some nations are less suicidal and more nationalistic than others. Take Hitler's Germany. Some European nations will fall into dhimmitude and terror, inevitably. One of them will obviously be France---by now, it's established tradition, folks. But other nations will resist, fight back. If a person like Hitler was elected in the past and brought genocide and against the peaceful Jewish people, you can be SURE that a Hitler will rise in our lifetime who will bring a genocide and mass expulsion against the Muslims, who are NOT peaceful (to put it mildly). This will no longer be about prejudices and loony conspiracy theories about Zionist global domination---this will be the real deal, a fight for survival. Let's hope the West reaches a consensus and neutralizes Iran in time.

Nevertheless, despite its timeliness, wealth of information and bravery in exposing what has become a taboo subject among the multi-culti tolerance police in the West, it is marred by being one of the least well edited books I have ever purchased. There are errors on every page, sometimes to the point of confusing the subject under discussion.
Honestly, don't you folks have real editors anymore? I'd offer my services but I'm happily employed, and anyway it seems that you and many other publishers are trying to save money at the most critical juncture of a book's genesis. That all-important "last pair of eyes," after all, comes attached to a brain with years and decades of experience that needs to be properly remunerated. In other words I suspect you're too cheap to pay for good work and you're betting that the average vulgarian reader won't even notice.
If that's harsh, I'm sorry, but the impression left by reading the first 150 pages of "Legacy" leads me to no other conclusion.

This is what surprises me about France. As a nation the French have struck me as the most nationalistic and parochial of them all. And yet, it is France that is filled with doubt. Or is it just the leaders?

The French politicos have been stabbed in the back by their "dupes", their intended junior partners. The same totalitarian-impulse-driven elites that tried to ram the EU constitution down the common man's throat are ramming Eurabia up the common man's butt. Chirac took almost 3 weeks to step up. This reminds me of the "Frankenstien" movies. What we're seeing right now is the spot where the monster is brought to life, breaks his chains, and takes off to rampage and the good Doctor realizes he can't control Frankie. Is Le Pen softly whistling in the shadows, biding his time and contemplating his manicured nails, waiting, waiting, waiting?
I have faith in the common man's refusal to go down without a whimper. There still has to be a large population of the equivalent of the American blue-collar, redneck working man with a shotgun racked in the cab of his pickup. (What are the gun laws in Europe? Is the man I describe impossible?) Every war has been fought by the common man. Elites may take credit, congratulating each other for victories and cursing the troops for defeats, neck deep in their constructed delusion, but it's the common man who fights and dies, our freedoms rest on the graves of common men.
Maybe the US and Australia will be the
fortress-refuges for those who would be free, the bastions where those who would not submit can gather under banners of common ideals.

Unfortunately, unlike the English, the French don't have a long history of democratic culture, they are used to absolute monarchs determining their fate. Even when under an active Monarchy, the English had certain "inalienable rights" (Magna Carta et al) that they were willing to fight and die to preserve. As a democracy, the French have had others preserve their freedoms for them (WWI, WWII).
I'm afraid the French "common man" is already apathetic about his fate, and is already in servitude to the state. What does it matter to him if he has a new master?
The Germans, on the other hand, will rely on the same old solutions....

I happen to know something about this since I got an email from my editor about 2 hours ago to announce that my book that was supposed to be published this month, and that was rescheduled for April 2006 is now being published Nov. 2006. Once the multinational conglomerates took over everything changed.
Population is almost irrelevant when discussing Muslims, if you have enough to cause trouble, they'll cause trouble. Nigeria has a slightly higher Christian population but Muslims have sucessfully bullied and browbeaten the population through violence and intimidation. Call me a pessimist but I don't think Europe has a big chance.
The only silver lining is the Christians/Jews from Europe moving to the US. Why isn't this a campaing issue? Not just Mexican illegals . . . there hard working Christians . . . but Islamic immigration. Put an end to it. Take the criticism from the 'enlightened world.' and get it done. It's not too late, but steps need to be done now. I think this would be a HUGE winning issue for any political party who would put it forward.
