Has the dissent in the camp manifested into a dissent on campus? A report from Iran Focus:
Tehran, Iran, Nov. 27 – Several anti-government student protests erupted in the Iranian capital on Sunday in response to an increasingly harsher government crackdown on campus activists.Students at the University of Tehran refused to attend classes in the morning and gathered outside the campus library to demonstrate against the appointment of a cleric as the new chief of the university. Ayatollah Amid Zanjani, a notorious religious prosecutor in the 1980s, was installed on Sunday as the new university chancellor. His predecessor, an academic, expressed surprise at “the unprecedented haste over the transition”.
The students chanted, “Appointed head, resign now!” and “Even if we students die, we will not accept humiliation”.
As protests got heated several students pushed the ayatollah and threw his turban off his head.
Photos of the protest are available at the aforementioned link.
Heard this all before; students getting pissed doesnt make me believe that the regime is about to be overthrown.
Ahmadinijad would have every last student slaughtered if it meant the mullathugs could stay in power even one day longer. The Basiji would go on a state-mandated rampage if the pres gave the word, so a few student having a protest doesnt really mean anything.
Yeah,DIW, but they pushed the Ayatolla around and ripped off his turban. Now thats progress. Maybe it will catch on and become a national pastime in Iran...
Things are probably way more unstable in Iran than we think/know. Khameini's engineered installation of the current thug-in-chief is a sign of self-perceived weakness, not strength.
