JAKARTA, Indonesia -- One of southeast Asia's most-wanted terrorist suspects, accused of plotting a series of deadly bombings in Bali, was believed to have been killed Wednesday when an elite Indonesian anti-terrorism unit stormed a suspected militant hideout, police said.Azahari bin Husin, a Malaysian accused of leading an al-Qaida-linked group and masterminding at least four deadly blasts in Indonesia in recent years, either was shot to death or blew himself up to avoid capture, senior police official Gen. Gorries Mere told The Associated Press.
Local TV stations reported that Azahari, who security officials have said always wore explosives around his waist to avoid being captured alive, blew himself up during the operation.
"We suspect it is him," said Mere, Indonesia's deputy chief of detectives. He cited "men in the field" as the source of the information....
Officials say Azahari, who is in his 40s, is a key member of the al-Qaida-linked terror group Jemaah Islamiyah. The group wants to establish an Islamic state spanning Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and the southern Philippines.

The greatest terror-related problem in Indonesia is that the Indonesian Armed Forces appear to have been infiltrated by al-Qaeda. Such news items as this article are relatively unsubstantiated and it is not possible to know at the present time whether or not they are being used by the Indonesian government to divert our attention away from more pressing terror-related matters in Indonesia.
However, it IS also possible that the anti-terror units in Indonesia may be doing some laudable work.If so, credit is due here.
Earthling here from sunny Oz and I can tell you that this story is all over the news and web. There was an Australian federal Police team with the Indonesian police at the scene of the hideout and they have confirmed the story. The suspect from all accounts we have here, blew himself up, but as happens in suicide bombings the victims head was basically left untouched. It is from a visual confirmation of his identity by top Indonesian police at the site who have been chasing him for over 4 years (so they should know what he looks like).
Therefore although both the Indonesian and Australian federal police have said further DNA tests will have to be done to confirm it 100%, they are 95% sure that this is the master bomb maker behind both Bali bombings, the Marriott Hotel bombing and the bombing of the Australian embassy. If it turns out to be true (as I have indicated, I think it definitely will) then at least all the victims of the above terrorist attacks can have some closure, and know that with his death it will be a big blow to the Al Qaeda affiliate terrorist network operating out of SE Asia.
This is really heartening news for most Australians.

Hooray! Good riddance to bad rubbish. Coward couldn't face his accusers. Although, given how Indonesia coddles scum like him, I'm glad he's gone to his raisins in paradise. It would have made people sick to watch this vile scum on trial, with his grotesque supporters chanting in the court room like at the Bali 1 bombing trial.
Now there's much debate over the new terror laws in my wide, brown homeland (Australia) and this goes some of the way to settling one of the more prickly issues.
The question of whether or not police should be instructed to "shoot to kill" - as happened to the unfortunate Brazilian fellow in the wake of the London bombings. Ordinarily our police, like many others, are trained to shoot to hit, not necessarily to kill. They are taught to aim at the trunk of the body because it presents the largest target and therefore the greatest possibility of hitting the suspect and the least possible chance of a stray shot hitting a bystander.
If, however, the suspect is wearing a bombvest or some such the approach must be different. The only way to prevent the suspect from detonating the device is to immediately deactivate the central nervous system (that is; killing the suspect outright).
