ROME (CNS) — Some Christians in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul have become the victims of extortion as unknown terrorist groups threaten to kill them or kidnap family members if they do not pay large sums of cash, said two Iraqi priests.One 43-year-old Christian man, married with three children, "was killed last week because he didn't pay," said Dominican Father Mekhail Nageeb of Nineveh, near Mosul. He spoke in a telephone interview with Catholic News Service Nov. 2.
After a group of unidentified men went to the man's workplace to extract money from him, "he tried not to pay and he ran out, so they killed him," said the Iraqi-born priest, who is the Dominicans' superior in Mosul.
Father Nageeb said he knows about "more than 10 or 15 people" in Mosul who have been forced to pay exorbitant sums of money to anonymous groups who have threatened to kill the victim or abduct family members.
The amount of money terrorists demand from an individual can run anywhere from $100,000 to $150,000, he said, forcing many to sell their homes, furnishings, properties or beg relatives or neighbors for cash. Others, he said, simply flee Iraq for a brief period in the hopes of escaping the threats.
"It's a really catastrophic problem now," he said.
Chaldean Father Sabah Patto, who was visiting Rome, told CNS that Christians are sometimes told they are paying a "protection tax."
He said the terrorists tell them, "We are protecting you, so you have to pay us."
I'm waiting for reports of a corner fish & chips shop in Burmingham going up in flames for having been late in their protection payments.

"If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me (Jesus) before it hated you... I chose you out of the world, therefore, the world hates you....If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you...but an hour is coming to those who kills you thinking they are offering service to God."
It is incredible that we in the West have turned a blind eye to the barbarity of Islam against humanity...of all faiths...for so long and that we have allowed the blood shed by our forebearers to be in vain.

I am waiting for the Vatican to speak up forcefully and directly to this situation. They seem to be frozen in the US State Dept. mindset. The extent of discrimination, abuse and violence against Christians by Muslims in "Islamic" countries needs to be challenged by the Vatican. It isn't good enough to talk about brotherhood and peace. The Vatican should have stepped up to the plate long ago.
...And if one of the killers accidentally kills himself while forcing the non-Muslim to enjoy his protection, does he become a martyr? If that's the case, it would be just another thing I don't get about the Jihadi mindset.
Yet another thing I don't get. How long has the US been protecting the Saudi regime? Where are the Saudi payments for this protection? How about freezing Saudi assets in the US and skimming off enough to pay for every bomb, bullet, liter of fuel and dollar of pay for the military and medical staff necessary to counteract Saudi-sponsored terrorism around the world?
Maryrose, the Vatican hasn´t nor army neither soldiers, it must be Iraq and western soldiers.
In old times, this it would be a motif for crusade, now, we have to wait better times for christians, it´s sad. But nor Western defends us.

Unfortunately, you will wait in vain for the Vatican to stand up to any Islamic threat. It has been effectively neutralised since the deceit of Vatican II permeated our beloved church. The liberals who have been selling us out since the 1960's are all about spreading "peace and love", including ecumenicalism in the form of tolerance for Islam. It just makes me feel warm all over.
No girl, it's up to us to get out our Rosaries, get down on our knees and pray. It's like we are back in the catacombs again.

Antisemitism, fanaticism and cold, hard self-interest. Not only does Islam not condemn things like running protection rackets as sin, it elevates them, almost to the level of some sort of sacrament.
The prophet would be so proud, his mighty creation reduced to two-bit thuggery and outright murder of its own members.
The Vatican does have its own soldiers, though not in large enough amounts. If you have never seen the quick-reaction team that is constantly on duty at the Vatican then you should. Well armed, well trained and mean.
