So the upshot, for the journalism majors that just rejoined the article, is that a simplistic good-faith estimate is that illegal aliens kill between 1,806 and 2,510 people in the United States each year. We have just passed the much-vaunted 2,000 deaths mark in the invasion of Iraq, a necessary endeavor. In that same 32 months, there have possibly been between 4,800 and 6,700 deaths in the invasion of the United States by illegal aliens, a corrupt endeavor tolerated in a frivolous pursuit of cheap labor.

Given that 16,528 murders were committed in the entire United States in 2004, this estimate—if correct—would mean that illegal aliens (3% of the population in the Census Bureau Estimate used in this analysis) commit between 11% and 15% of all the murders in the United States each year. The murder rate for the illegal alien population in this model, 20 to 29 homicides per year per 100,000 persons, would thus be 400% to 500% the rate of the combined native-born and legal immigrant populations.

Even if American policing, a desire by illegal aliens to remain obscure, or other factors reduced the murder rate in the illegal alien population to just half the rate in their native countries, we are still paying a very high price in lives for our abject failure to enforce our own immigration laws.

Thousands may be dying—but at least our lawns look nice.

Al-Arian was considered one of the most important terrorist figures to be brought to trial in the United States since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. His indictment in 2003 was hailed by then-Attorney General John Ashcroft as one of the first triumphs of the Patriot Act, which was enacted in the weeks after Sept. 11.

The Patriot Act gave the government greatly expanded powers and broke down the wall between foreign intelligence investigations and domestic law enforcement. In the Al-Arian case, officials said, it allowed separate FBI investigations — one of them a yearslong secret foreign intelligence probe of the professor's activities — to be combined and all the evidence used against him.

I don't see anyone calling for the defendants and the judge to be killed. That's in sharp contrast to Muslims in Indonesia who demanded death or imprisonment for women accused of "Christianization". The Muslims even brought coffins to the court to make their point.

This is another sad day for our legal system, another example of a befuddled jury. "If the keffiyeh doesn't fit, you must acquit!"

Remember, for decades the Feds had no success in prosecuting organized crime in the U.S. Eventually in the 1970's they had to create the RICO Act to make it easier to show the connections of a criminal network. Something similar for terrorist groups may be called for now, and would make a more useful addition to the Patriot Act than the drivel that's in there now.

Is that it? On all counts? No charges yet to bring? No appeal? No nothing?

Can this be allowed to stand? Who were those jurors? What inquiry into their beliefs was made? Who was challenged in the voir dire, and who should have been, but was not?

This can't be left as is.

And if it turns out that American jurors are incapable of doing the job, then that job should be taken away from them, and special courts created, akin to Tax Courts, but for the new category of Terrorism-related offenses, and those courts to have not jurors but three judges who are specialists (including their knowledge of the relevant texts -- all the relevant texts). Only thus will the jurors, some of whom may be unfoolable and unflappable, others of whom will be naive and sentimental, or biased in favor of defendants either because they have a special affection for the "great religion" of Islam, or because, like a certain irreudicible proportion of the population of the Western world (in the United States, said to affect about 10% of that population) that suffers from that peculiar mental pathological condition known as antisemitism, which would naturally make one less likely, as in the Al-Arian case, to give a damn if he preached or plotted or planned murder of Israelis. This is hardly an imaginary problem.

What a mess. What a disaster.

Some points I'd like to make:

1) If the defendants are citizens, then they have the right to trial by jury

2) The defendants are considered innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt

3) As one other poster noted, if the defendants are guilty, then the prosecution messed up. If the jury was stacked, the prosecution still messed up because the jurors are supposed to be acceptable both the defense and the prosecution

4) There are still charges outstanding against the defendants presumably as a result of the mistrial (hung jury?). If the prosecution in this trial messed up, there is less chance that the next team of prosecutors will

5) There is always the option of launching a civil action as last resort, if there is sufficient feeling that justice hasn't been served.

I am concerned that so many are developing a lynch mob attitude. Now is the time for the West to embrace its legal system as something that makes it different from and better than its opponents. Are we to set up a new Inquisition in response to the threat of jihad? The only winner in such a situation is Old Nick himself, and he doesn't care whether we call it Sharia or mob rule, so long as we're forgetting the principles on which our society is based.

So before we fight fire with fire, let's try fighting fire with water first.

This may be a case of jury nullification. We should look into why this jury reached this verdict. If we really are at war as the administration says we are, then we should use military tribunals and not the criminal justice system.

Remember the case during WWII when the Nazis landed in NY and were apprehended. They were executed by a military tribunal within weeks.

Well, speaking from a country that has acquitted a known (and self-admitted) jihadist *twice* (Holland, Samir Azouz, respectively) I can tell you this:

The point of Gitmo and military tribunals is to avoid verdicts like this.Even if a defendant is acquitted by a military tribunal he can still be held for the duration of the war. Think about that when you see Dick Durbin or some other liberal whining about Gitmo. One more thing Americans can also be tried in military tribunals that was the case with some of the Nazi saboteurs.As was mention earlier some of the defendants were convicted and sentenced to death within weeks.

The harsh reality is that is probably it for this case. As I have said many times, America ***MUST*** create special terrorist courts that are competent to handle such cases. I also seriously question if jury trials should apply in such special terrorist courts.

From a jury perspective, we are seeing the continuing negative impact of the American mainstream national press and its total inability to report on terrorism news. Therefore, juries are completely unable to judge the gravity of their actions since they have no context.

So, he has been acquited. So, he has not broken the law. So, his peers say.

So, is it ok then to do the same as Al-Arian did but against muslims. One could raise money, create websites, all in the name of freedom fighters. This is freedom of speech.

Anti-semitism in America at 17% By Stephanie Gaskell, Associated Press

NEW YORK - Reversing a 10-year decline, a new survey released yesterday found that 17 percent of Americans held "hard-core" anti-Semitic views.

"The evidence suggests that a strong undercurrent of Jewish hatred persists in America," said Abraham Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League, which released the survey.

In 1992, the same survey found that 20 percent of Americans were anti-Semitic. That had fallen to 12 percent in 1998. "We believe that Sept. 11 and the Mideast conflict have clearly had an impact," Foxman said. "As these life-altering events have transformed us as a nation, they have also triggered the anti-Semitism that was already there, but buried beneath the surface."

The survey found that 35 percent of Americans fell into the "middle" category, having some faintly prejudiced views but not any strident bias. Forty-eight percent of the country was deemed prejudice-free, down from 53 percent in 1998.

The findings are based on an "index of anti-Semitic beliefs" used by researchers in four previous surveys over the last 35 years. The survey measured bias by the number of affirmative answers to 11 questions, including: "Do you believe Jews have too much power in the United States?"

Incidents of anti-Jewish attacks, mostly harassment and intimidation, rose in 2002, the ADL said. From January to May, it reported 626 incidents, compared with 564 in the same period last year.

The national survey, conducted from April 26 through May 6, polled 1,000 Americans over age 18. It has a margin of error of 3 percentage points.

In a separate poll of 300 Hispanic-Americans the fastest growing minority in the US 35% were found to hold anti-Semitic views. The headline to this item is incorrect. Al-Arian is not "walking" at least not yet. He is going back to jail until prosecutors decide whether or not to retry him on the deadlocked counts. He is just one figure in the jihadist community in the U.S.

Washington, DC—An Anti-Defamation League survey published Tuesday says 14 percent of U.S. residents have anti-Semitic views, a minor decline from 2002.

“The 2005 Survey of American Attitudes Towards Jews in America” questioned 1,600 adults across the country March 18 through March 25. The poll has a margin of error of 2.8 percent.

The 14 percent identified represent nearly 35 million adults who hold views about Jews that are “unquestionably anti-Semitic,” the authors said.

A similar survey in 2002 concluded 17 percent were anti-Semitic.

The number of blacks with strong anti-Semitic beliefs continued to remain high since 1992. The 2005 survey found 36 percent of African-Americans hold strong anti-Semitic beliefs, four times more than the 9 percent for whites.

The survey also revealed 35 percent of foreign-born Hispanics hold hardcore anti-Semitic beliefs, while 19 percent of Hispanics born in the United States fall into the same category.

Among other indicators, the more educated a person is, the less likely he or she is to have anti-Semitic views, and the older a person, the more likely he or she is to have anti-Semitic views.

From the little that I learned from the OJ trials and the Robert Blake trials, it seems that civil cases are an easier way to obtain a guilty verdict. I hope that the victims of jihad, the families of those dead in Israeli bombings funded by the rumpled professor and his cronies, will consider a civil suit against the group. The evidence is still there. I have a vague connection to it and I know for certain that the case was in the works for years. If nothing else, it would be good to see those people homeless and without their school properties and garnished pensions. I agree with just about everyone else. This is a real set-back in the war on Islamic terrorism.

Maybe we could get all the "big boys" who fight for our cause to come and speak at this event for free. Robert Spencer, Hugh Fitzgerald, Daniel Pipes, Phyllis Chesler, David Horowitz, Walid Shoebat, Lee Kaplan, etc. Organize something so big that mainstream media has no choice but to pay attention. This event would surely bring out the terrorist supporters, who would probably start some violent rioting and help us to reveal their true colours. Let's put our heads together and fight.

I take Abe Foxman with a boulder of salt. With the Al-Arian's of the world running amock, who does he go after? Those Israel-loving Christian right-wing! I lost all respect for him after this latest move. Do anti-semetic attitutdes exist? Isn't that a dumb question. A better question is the degree of this . . . say from 1940(or 20) to today. Has it increased or decreased? What is the degree of assimiliation of Jews in our country from the 20's to today?? Seems to me that a Jew couldn't live in certain areas of our country back not too long ago, marry a certain person, or go to a certain Ivy league school. Now, Foxman bitches about The Christian Right and The Passion of the Christ. Hatred of Jews or hatred of blacks will always exist to a limited degree, but I think the trend is clearly positive for both black and Jewish integration into the mainstream fabric of America. Perhaps Abe should watch the video of Danny Pearl, as I have. The enemy ain't Pat Robertson, it's not W, it's not Rummie, it's not Falwell, it's not terrorism.

Now, turning to the topic at hand, the issue is therefore not one of anti-semetic hatred but one of intellect. Two letters . . . OJ. If Orenthal gets a free pass, why not Sami? I hate to sound like a hater of dummies, but if they couldn't follow OJ's blood drops, how can they follow an intricate prosecution, dating back many years? Steve Emerson was on O'Reilly earlier this evening. The replay I think is going on right now. Al Arian is still in jail, and Emerson said that he believes the prosecutors will try the charges they still have on him.

He also said that round two will be much more organized, and that the evidence they used in round one was over a decade old....Most of it anyway. The charges that they'll try next are still bad enough to put this rat away for life.

We can only hope, and wait to see how competent the government will be in round two.

It SEAMS like some of us have been here longer than Spencer. In all this time I don't see much progress for our side. While that makes it as authoritative as a horoscope, it does mean that a peaceful person, can become a peaceful muslim. These peaceful people need to realize that Mohammed hated the peaceful muslims of his day, and considered them just as much of an enemy. He called them useless, and seditious. Islam is just as much their enemy as yours and mine.

I'm philosophically and politically closer to you than just about anybody in this forum, but I have to tell you old buddy that I'm not nearly as sanguine as you are about the inevitability of Western victory in this war of civilizations. We are disadvantaged demographically and - as you suggest - within the realm of our political culture.We might win, but it is far from a foregone conclusion.

Strangely, many here advocate disengagement from the Islamic world...something that conforms to the hopes and expectations of Bin Ladin himself.
I believe in engagement...in effecting change in the Muslim world, in using our considerable assets there to further the agenda of pluralism, just as Muslims are wisely using their (mostly Leftist) assets in the West to further their own agenda.

Both were and avowed enemies of America.

Bush's constant RoP invocations have not helped his cause...(and effectively disqualify him from anti-Dhimmi status), but actions speak louder than words. I see this as a failure of education.

Thanks for the warnings -- your concerns are reflected by many in America -- I am not smug about the menace -- even a few Muslims may harbor enough hatred to cause fantastic mayhem, and they number here FAR more than I would wish.

But take care, my friend, when quoting statistics! Most credible statistics put the number of Muslims in America at about 1.8 to 2.3 million. This is far lower than your number of 7-10 million. This higher number even exceeds the numbers often quoted by CAIR, who's "estimate" bounces between 6 and 8 million, depending on how Ibrahim Hooper feels on that particular day.

Inflating their numbers, and thereby overstating their influence is one CHEAP way the Islamic fascists exploit our information/poll based society -- when left unchallenged, or WORSE, when these completely faulty statistics begin to be quoted by the anti-Jihadis, they score an important victory in the public relations war they are waging. DON'T MAKE IT SO EASY FOR THEM TO WIN!

All of your other points are good ones -- we are well advised to begin shipping them back wholesale for even minor infractions. We need to seriously tighten up our immigration enforcement policies -- the laws are on the books, they are honored mainly in the breach.

We might begin by asking immigrant Muslims whether or not they agree that Sharia law should dominate our man made laws. If they believe this, as ALL good Muslims should, then they are guilty of betraying their oath to honor the Constitution. But since Muslims can't be trusted to tell the truth, this may be a hollow gesture. Still, I believe many are willing to state openly that they want Sharia to prevail in America. CAIR supports this too. As such, it is little more than a seditious organization working for the overthrow of the American Government. It should be recognized as such, and treated as such!

I'm certain that most US Imams also are in flagrant violation of their visas and their oaths if they have been granted citizenship. They are the first that must be flushed out of our system!
