Members of the Prime Minister's Muslim Advisory Council want clerics to abide by a code of conduct in a bid to rein in radical imams.The council is working on a code of conduct for clerics, which it hopes to introduce next year.
Council spokesman Yasser Soliman says the guidelines are in response to concerns from the community....
The idea of a set of guidelines was first discussed at a summit of Muslim leaders that was held in August.
It has the backing of many moderate leaders but some imams are angry about the proposals, which include the monitoring of sermons.
This should be done by the government of Australia, if it is concerned about sedition.
However, Mr Soliman believes very few clerics will refuse to participate in the new scheme."We can't enforce it," he said.
"I think most clerics will be happy to be on it and most of them will be happy to register and contribute to it.
"Those that aren't, when people are thinking of employing their services they'll check the register and see well they're self-appointed or they're not recognised."
Mr Soliman says the scheme will not further marginalise radical clerics.
"Part of the approach that is being discussed is to try and develop a dialogue where you bring down the temperature of, I guess, their preachings," he said.
How? In any case, he's right: it will not further marginalize radical clerics, because they are not any more likely to be the self-appointed types this article is concerned about than are more moderate clerics. The idea that only uneducated, self-appointed clerics are actually jihadists is yet another PC myth.
He denies the plan amounts to religious censorship."This happens in other religions as well," he said.
"Similar education and upgrading of their education happens in Christian religion, rabbis go through similar things, so why should we be any different?"
You shouldn't. In fact, your group should be subjected to greater scrutiny -- not because of "racism" or "Islamophobia," but because there are no Christian preachers or rabbis preaching hatred of and violence against people of another religions. But among Islamic clerics such preaching is so commonplace that it is scarcely even noticed anymore.
It's not just the clerics. Some of the flock expects to hear the full, undiluted message.

Keeping muftis in check for some reason has never seemed a solid answer to me. I think it will just dive underground, becoming more exciting mysterious and victim-prone I almost prefer to keep it transparent and public as possible. A friend of mine is a truck driver and had the police radio on all through the Sydney Multicultural riots, He said the cops were terrified and couldn’t deal with it at all.
We need a petition to lobby for a commonwealth level enquiry into the inability of the police forces to combat islamic crime. They face physical retribution and also legal issues (i.e. calls of racism for attempting to police islamic thugs) I think it takes about 15000 signatures to prompt a legislation change, so doable even if its more to get a Government enquiry.

And you make a good point about driving the extremists underground by monitoring and regulation the immams preaching in the mosques. But would this be a step in the right or wrong direction?
Australians in general may forget what is going on but I don't think that our law enforcment authorities would be so blind. Using a code of conduct would at least allow the mosques and other public institutions to remain moderate(?) and limit the exposure of impressionable muslims to the radical preachers.
Although not an ideal solution it may increase our immediate safety somewhat and allow those trying to combat extremism to do so without being sabotaged from within their own groups.
Personally, I would prefer to be aware of all that is being said and in this regard transparency may be the best option but there are those that are incapable of being exposed to extreme ideas without adopting them as their own. Maybe limiting their accessibility to this material is a suitable, if temporary solution.

Ahmmmm to be honest, I am not 100 percent sure either way.
There is still debate as to if this Global Jihad is actually WW3 in present-day terms… or merely another hiccup of modernity.
Looking at Europe so ahead of Australia in islamic colonisation we have the privilege here of foresight. It’s still uncharted territory. Defeating islam in the modern multicultural world of today has not yet been achieved.
I agree with you though that if it stops some young muslims taking up the Jihad it’s half worth it. Another thing I tend to like about forcing the muslim community one way or the other is it shows a no-tolerance approach from the host country. I think in Europe that was lacking and used by islamists to their advantage.
This is why I will back enabling the dhimmi-ized police force to regain its rightful powers, which if this monitoring of the mosques can help, then yes its good.
As for moderates, I’m unsure again but tend to sway towards not relying on moderation from the muslim community. I think there is possibilities that muslims will use this mufti register as a way to say well no that’s not us. I know there are many muslims who hate this going on and affecting their lives so badly, but will still insist/vote for Islam.
I think that living a religious life under a lawful religion such as islam is not to good in a secular and democratic society. Even after a few generations there is still no assimilation. I think it’s not really possible for secular and non-secular to co-exist together when both forces want control.
I would agree that the future, if we had the luxury of waiting and hoping for the best, may be different and islam could possibly become less destructive with in the West, but there is not the time to find out. Also if the islamic religion didn’t cause such harm, non integration may not be a problem.

Interfaith bargaining/meetings etc is so dam annoying, as it’s all still imprisoned in the language of political correctness, and islam wins more of my country almost every-time when it’s decided in the pc mode. Not so long ago a couple of preachers were taken to court in Victoria on the grounds that they misrepresented Islam. Why not get the alleged moderate muslims to take the radical muslims to court on the grounds that they are misrepresenting Islam? What a comedy that would be.
This attempt to declaw the radical islamic preachers is an attempt by Howard and others in his government to appear as if they know what they are doing. Have a go at their track record: their party (Lib-NP coalition along with the ALP) has brought into Australia a group of people whose inimicality was talked about in 1980 and probably earlier. We (our parents) were told to sit down because the politicians knew what they were doing. As a matter of fact they were thinking of making a law against walking around with a smile on your face so confident were they that all would be well. This group of immigrants indulged in criminal activities which the state government has ignored or hasn't got the faintest idea on what to do about it. The rapes of young women in Australia by 'Lebs' happened in the year or so leading up to the 2000 Olympics. It was deliberately kept out of the press by spin doctors and others who didn't want to scare away tourists.

Don't worry about blabbing on, you to seem to have your head screwed on right. I think I am as confused as you are about what should be done. I am prepared to give muslims a chance to reform their religion/lifestyle into a moderised and peaceful version of Islam. The current version doesn't seem quite right...
But at the same time I am well aware of the dangers of allowing the muslim population to grow unmonitored no matter how peaceful they may seem. Strong policing and the reduction of political correctness in society is a good start but with police manuals advising to "be considerate of a suspects beliefs" when attending domestic disputes I think we have a long way to go...

Yes agreed, but how do we outlaw a religion, so far I can think of almost military style policing to control its effects. Also ensuring no social security for the “extra wives”.
Otherwise refusing them entry based on religion, outlawing religions even islam etc are slow if impossible moves through legislation.

Yes, the guide is unjust but at this point it is just a guide, not legislation. What I find unjust is the number of people arrested after the riots in sydney and the varying punishments. A fine for carrying a knife, 4 months for a stick. Thats not right.
The authorities need to act according to the law set in place. The assumption should be that you will receive a harsh punishment and then actually make the arrests. Intimidation should not be tolerated and appeasement should not be considered.
If new laws need to be introduced to further protect our society then they should be. It is not a practical idea to outlaw a religion in a tolerant society. But any behaviour that is antisocial, disruptive, etc should be controlled.
