INVESTIGATORS probing a suicide bombing by a Belgian woman in Iraq are holding five people thought to be connected with her on suspicion of participating in terrorist activities, a spokesman said.The 38-year-old convert to Islam, nicknamed by Belgian media as the Belgian kamikaze, blew herself up on November 9 on the outskirts of Baghdad.
Security sources believe it was the first suicide attack in Iraq by a European woman.
The woman was identified by media as Muriel Degauque.
In a newspaper interview she was described by her mother as being a runaway who dabbled in drugs before becoming "more Muslim than Muslim" when she married a Belgian of Moroccan descent....
The mother said Muriel's connection with Islam began in 2000 when she became involved with North African men and eventually married a Belgian of Moroccan descent, whom she blamed for "brainwashing" her daughter."She became more Muslim than Muslim," she said. "When she first converted, she wore a simple veil. That was not so far from normal even if it is strange for a Belgian. But, with her last husband ... she wore a chador."
A chador is a head-to-toe dress worn by devout Muslim women.
"The religion was totally ingrained in her. She only lived for that. She had learned Arabic," she said....
The mother said she had not expected Muriel to go as far as blowing herself up in Iraq.
"I did not see it coming. She was very secretive, with a very independent character. I am angry at those who manipulated her," she said.
We will all need to see it coming. We will all need to be aware of what a convert to Islam might be taught -- and PC sensitivities will have to take the hindmost.
I get the idea that Muriel's mother was really just looking the other way.
Muriel, a 38 year old who converted to Islam and married her second husband at the age of 33 seems to have been plaqued, for at least 15 years, with a series of problems that her mother really had been aware of.

Agreed, this is why Islam must be stopped in the West. Every Mosque should be monitered with video cameras, and listened to carefully, by all Americans. I suspect that Degauque was not so independent after all. Her eager embrace of Islam merely indicates the shallowness of her own belief system and lack of self-awareness. Her "independence' was likely a show, a defiant act to mask her insecurity.
Most likely she welcomed the "manipulations" of Muslims because they led her to the "total and perfect" way of life -- no more doubt, no more self-questioning, no more agonizing over difficult moral decisions. All is spelled out for one in Islam and this is what Degauque sought.
In life we must accept paradox and learn to live with ambiguity. For some the tensions so caused are unbearable, hence the welcoming of Islam.
It would be so enlightening if some university could conduct a study of the psychological differences between converts to Islam and converts to Christianity. On the other hand, it might be frightening to realize the depth of our human weaknesses and how thin is the veneer of stability and independence.

It strikes me that the MSM isn't taking the phenomenon of "conversions" to Islam seriously enough. Had she and other been converting to some fascist creed there would be screaming headlines. (KKK anyone)
We know enough about the aims of these Muslim proselytizing preachers to allow us to take actions against their preaching.
People, especially young vulnerable, women should be warned about the potential hazards of embracing Islam. Converts should be monitored the way we monitor people who are HIV positive, or some drug addicts.

In our nihilistic and empty popular culture, we can expect many more attention-seekers to use suicide to make a statement. Much like school shootings are a fad crime, suicide bombing looks poised to become the same thing. Positive media coverage full of pathos for the bombers is a big help in recruiting.

Jen – what a great post. When I first read the article, I noticed that she “dabbled” in drugs. I am no prude and I have on occasion thought that Muslims might be a whole lot better off if they would just drown their personal woes in alcohol periodically, just to take the “edge” off that pent up fanaticism. But the fact that she did so “dabble” suggests that she was searching for something, some deeper meaning or some deeper or more intense experience in life or what have you (something which Hugh has mentioned quite often). But as drugs are illegal, there is some logic in the notion that it takes a certain rebellious mentality to seek them out while at the same time these presumably “independent” people with that rebellious mentality often wind up enslaved or “manipulated” by their addictions. So it is a strange and jarring contrast, as you point out but drug addiction, with its weird juxtaposition of rebellion plus subsequent enslavement, provides a sort of template for this woman’s psychology. Islam apparently acts as a sort of drug for the western convert. (And it’s somewhat ironic to note the high level of drug addiction in Iran now amongst the disenfranchised populace, encouraged from what I gather, by the mullahs themselves.)

Well said! So now sane human beings who can withstand ambiguity and uncertainty and the essential mystery of life (or at least muddle through it all in whatever messy but nonviolent way they can manage) have to deal with not only a billion plus folks raised on the drug of Islam but potentially thousands upon thousands of westerners struggling with the basic psychodynamics of "drug addiction", in all its myriad forms, which makes them a vulnerable population for Islam, especially as they struggle to come off the drugs. I am aware that Islam is growing fast in our prisons but it is my understanding that our prisons are mostly chock full of drug offenders so now...2 and 2 together!
So on the one hand, I am tempted to think that this woman blowing herself up sort of gives new meaning to that old 80’s slogan 'Just Say NO'. But if given a choice between drug-addicted and Islam-addicted neighbors, I'll take the drug addiction (Just say Yes?!). She has been educated in a western schools, with western values, with freedom, free-speech as her highest values. She lived in a democratic society.
I can't understand it. It is far too simple to say that she has been brainwashed. She was looking for muslim husbands (her former one, was muslim too). I'm sure she was attracted by the muslim faith in its most brutal form. Turkish have a moderate faith...I'm sure it wasn't enough for her, that's why she left her for this fanatic.

In an intervieuw the parents tell about their "son in law", he demanded that women and men would eat seperatly and that the father would stop drinking alcohol. The parents refused this and did not see their daughter again.

My understanding is that she was the only casualty. I find that odd actually, and wonder whether she didn't actually simply commit personal suicide, in which case, yes, I would describe it as tragic, if in fact she got herself into that situation and couldn't back out of it but somehow designed to spare innocent life in the process of her self-immolation. But if she actually intended to the end to take innocent life along with her own pathetic one and simply bungled it, then "tragic" isn't the term I'd use for it.

Yeah, it does seem to be a very sexually oriented religion. Sex seems to be the big reward for men. I read somewhere that a woman suicide bomber doesn't get 72 men when she gets to heaven.
