Unesco plans botanical garden based on Quran

Oh, for pete's sake. Can somebody please tell me the location of Unesco's Bible Garden? Its Bhagavad Gita Garden? Its Granth Garden? Etc. Is there anything whatsoever that could possibly justify this continued UN pandering? From GulfNews, with thanks to Sr. Soph:

Doha: Unesco's regional office here is working on a project proposal to establish a botanical garden in the region, an official has said.

The main feature of this project, dubbed Quran Botanical Garden, is that it would be based on the scientific and aesthetic concepts contained in the Quran and would be a living display of the flora mentioned in the holy book, Unesco (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) said.

"The botanical garden would be the first in the region and we are keen on turning this study into a reality," a Unesco official told Gulf News.

The organisation is conducting extensive research and studies in cooperation with international experts, botanists and Muslim scholars to chalk out a definitive proposal to be presented to authorities across the region.

based on the scientific and aesthetic concepts contained in the Quran

Well, at least it won't take up much space.

"it would be based on the scientific and aesthetic concepts contained in the Quran...."
-- from the article above

There are Elizabethan knot gardens. There are gardens that contain every flower mentioned in Shakespeare. There are gardens of flowers mentioned in the Bible, and many a maid, returning from a trip to the Holy Land (c. 1910), held in her gloved hands a book containing between its pages of poesy pressed flowers from the "hills of Palestine." There is a garden of forking paths on Maipu, in Buenos Aires. There are the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. There is the Garden of Eden.

But the notion that this "Qur'an Botanical Garden" could conceivably contain a variety of flora, given the Qur'an's desert origins -- and the preposterous idea that such a garden would demonstrate the "scientific" qualities of the Qur'an -- such as the fact that all of geology is said to come from a phrase or two about mountains as pegs holding the world together, and all of astrophysics comes from another phrase, and the structure of DNA can be found in another of Muhammad's -- or is it Allah's -- pithy apercus -- well, why should UNESCO take it seriously?

Rhetorical question.

We know why.

Realistically it should just be a sandpit.

Now there's a really daring Turner Prize exhibit. Rather better than shedboatshed, this year's winner, though the latter is unlikely to provoke death threats.

C'mon, folks! Think positively now!

"The Day of Resurrection will not arrive until the Moslems make war against the Jews and kill them, and until a Jew hiding behind a rock and tree, and the rock and tree will say: 'Oh Moslem, oh servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him!'"

- Sahih Bukhari 004.52.176

And all this funded by UNESCO!!!

Since I'm an optimist - I note that at least the garden isn't planned for Madrid, Rome, etc.

Deserts can bloom with some spectacular stuff after the rare rainfall... but I suspect those were the best times for Raids, also. Which leaves the flowers trampled under hoof...

A generic rock, a generic tree. And a generic "Jew hiding behind that rock and tree," to round out the picture, to give it real authenticity?

Generic Jews, Hugh?

Aha, we all look alike.

;)

Scientific concepts in the Koran?

I didn't know Bible plagiarism was a science.

I hope all the pillars holding the heavens will not be disturbed by this proposed koranic garden. What will they think of next, a theme park based on the Koran?

Yes - design should be a large sandpit with one of those huge Phallic cacti growing - represents
Allah and his brothel in the sky. A spikey, devilish Thorn bush for Murderous Mo-when touched will make your hand bleed.Lastly a pile of old stones for Stone Age Worshipers - also come in handy if any of 'The Faithful' are caught short and need to scrape their bums clean.

..don't forget the Dead Horse Arum lily, Helicodiceros muscivorus ,a Mediterranean flower that so accurately mimics the stench of rotting flesh that it lures flies to lay their eggs on it, thereby tricking them into acting as pollinators, a great centerpiece for La Jardin de Quran..

Not in my backyard!

RE: Lastly a pile of old stones for Stone Age Worshipers

Actually, a pile of rocks would be very appropriate in that Islam originally started as
worshipping rocks, hence the name "Dome of The Rock" where the so-called Prophet Mohammand took off to the heavens (surprised a..., you landed in "hell".

Why do they call Mohammand a Prophet? He never prophesized anything nor are there any prophecies in the Qu'ran. I could be wrong as I can't tell you what I did with my copy.

Learjet, the Dome of the rock is called so because of the large stone underneath the dome, protruding from the Temple Mount.

This is believed to be the base of the altar in the temple and the very same rock which Abraham placed Isaac upon to be sacrificed.

Oops, I mean, the rock where Abraham placed Ishmael upon> We Jews are liars and have rewritten the Torah to accomodate ourselves.

Sorry about that slip, Mohammed. It won't happen again.

Interested;

"Well at least it won't take up much space."

Funny on a budget, less than 10 words.

And that shedboatshed guy, what's up with him? I read about him yesterday, some of his stuff is funny, not like some "artistes", but he's got this thing for watering cacti. Maybe he would be the right guy to direct production of this "garden", although I imagine it wouldn't be fair to have an infidel in charge, more Western arrogance and all that. Maybe he could make one of his cacti-watering bicycles out of a quran, some prayer beads, and an explosive vest. I'd be willing to water the "Quranic Garden", I just have to drink something first.

What is the address of the garden? I want to donate some of my special fertilizer (made wing buffalo wings and PBR).

Whatsa matter? Don't the Arab sheiks of the Persian Gulf have enough moolah, mezumah, and black gold to pay for their own garden? Can't they afford to pay for expert gardeners imported from Versailles or the plushier English country houses? On the other hand, aren't they part of the poor and poverty stricken Third World? But if they aren't, then maybe UNESCO could do something useful with their international funds, like financing preservation of traditional basketweaving in Zamboanga. After all, fostering shared native crafts could be a way to bring together warring Christians and Muslims [Moros] in the southern Philippines. Isn't that what the UN is supposed to do?

But since UNESCO is sure to spend the money where their masters want it spent, then the garden will be made. In that case, let's hope they plant a few coconut palms. Then, when the Shaykh of Qatar and his vassal Qaradawi come to visit, somebody can climb up and throw coconuts down, cracking a few Qatari crania.
