TEL AVIV, Israel - A Palestinian suicide bomber blew himself up at a Tel Aviv fast-food stand Thursday, killing himself and wounding 20 people in an apparent attempt to destabilize the region just a week before the Palestinian parliament election.The militant Islamic Jihad group claimed responsibility in a phone call to The Associated Press. Islamic Jihad has been responsible for all six suicide bombings in Israel in the past year, and is the only faction to boycott next Wednesday's parliament vote.
The bomber, who witnesses said pretended to be a peddler selling disposable razors, walked into "The Mayor's Shwarma" in a crowded pedestrian mall near Tel Aviv's old central bus station on Thursday afternoon.
Yehiel Ohana, who works in a nearby store selling nuts and seeds, said the bomber, wearing a black coat and black stocking cap, aroused his suspicions because of his unsteady gait.
"The guy was standing at the corner of the street, looking like he was waiting for someone," Ohana said. "He swayed strangely. Then he went into the shwarma (gyro) stand, and two to three seconds later, we heard the explosion. Everything shuddered. We entered the shwarma stand, and we saw him lying on the floor, and then we understood he was a suicide bomber."
Police initially said the explosion apparently went off in the restaurant's bathroom, possibly prematurely as the bomber tried to prepare the explosive device.
However, police spokesman Mickey Rosenfeld later said the blast did not go off prematurely.
"He made his way into the shwarma place, deep into the back of the restaurant, not in the bathroom. He exploded himself inside the restaurant itself," Rosenfeld said.
At the time, most of the customers were sitting at sidewalk tables, relatively far from the bomber.
Well, at least we can be thankful that he was relatively inept.

Let me see, Palestinian "gunmen" are running amok, kidnapping Europeans, firing missiles into Israel and invading Palestinian "Authority" offices; Syria is involved in a campaign of assassination in Lebanon; Jordan is being targeted by al-Queda; Iraq is in chaos and Iran is threatening a nuclear Holocaust. This is the "stable" environment that the AP fears will be "destabilized" by this guy. I guess we should all be wringing our hands.

Do suicide bombers families get money even if the suicide bomber doesn't kill anyone but himself?
Somewhere in the Gaza Strip is the Human Resources department of the jihad, an office with cubicles, windows covered with venetian blinds, and lots of inspirational posters with sayings like "There is no 'I' in 'Bomb'."
This department will make a note in his personnel file about insufficient casualities. When budget cuts are necessary, he'll be laid off posthumously.
Suggestion to Israel - retaliate the day after their election, and target the winners.
I think in the book "The trouble with islam" Irshad Manji reckons an alternative translation regarding the virgins in paradise, is that the martyr wil receive white raisins which were/are apparently highly prized in the middle east.

Also, your wording presupposes that 'the Jews' are straining at the leash to kill as many Palestinians as possible, and would do so were the West not keeping them on a leash. I have not seen any evidence that Israel shares your own bloodthirstyness, whatever provocations she has been constantly subject to.
Given that islamic states may be very close to developing nuclear weapons, I think any wholesale slaughter of Palestinian civilians would be not only morally reprehensible but also suicidal on the part of Israel.
Moreover, I fail to see what relevence your comment has to this site and its stated aims.
Actually, religion_of_peas and jingoist, Spencer will delete any posts he is notified about that contain language to the effect of wiping out Muslim holy places or general populations and also racist, sexist, xenophobic comments as well. The comment below would likely qualify.

but the bomber was a member of al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades.
The groups are all working together and basically for all the taqyia raining down it is a concerted effort.
That is a lesson people must take when considering the terrorist onslaught.
