I am glad of this. I hope this will enable DHS to release some of the information on Tariq Ramadan that led them to the decision to keep him out of the country. I discuss Ramadan in my book Onward Muslim Soldiers, detailing the careful ambiguity of his Muslim moderation. There is a great deal more that is questionable about him; I hope this suit will make his allegiances clear. From AP, with thanks to all who sent this in:
NEW YORK - The American Civil Liberties Union sued the U.S. government Wednesday for preventing a Muslim scholar from entering the country, arguing that the government was using anti-terrorism laws as "instruments of censorship."The lawsuit asks the court to find a provision of the Patriot Act unconstitutional and seeks clearance for Tariq Ramadan, a Swiss intellectual and Muslim scholar, to accept invitations to speak in the United States.
Ramadan was blocked from accepting a tenured teaching position at the University of Notre Dame when his visa was revoked in August 2004 because of a provision of the Patriot Act, said Jameel Jaffer, an ACLU staff attorney.
Jaffer said it was part of an effort by the federal government to bar foreign scholars whose political views might be contrary to those of the U.S. government. The provision blocks entry to the country for prominent aliens who used their status to endorse or espouse terrorism or to persuade others to terrorist activity, he said.
"We don't think there's any evidence at all that he has endorsed terrorism," Jaffer said. "In fact, there is overwhelming evidence that he has condemned terrorism."

Exhibit #5 YOUR RECOMMENDATION HERE
ACLU = American Civil Liberties Union
Tariq Ramadan = Swiss (or at least "Geneva-based")
Swiss = Not American
So, ACLU, please explain why you are wasting everyone's time with a lawsuit for someone who is not American?
Thanks,
kuta
Seriously, can anyone tell me of ONE good thing the ACLU has done for our country?
Kutabeach,
My very first thought, as well! My politics are neither all right wing, nor left. I'm more aligned with the Libertarians, I guess.
I'm conservative enough to find the ACLU's action to be an outrage. What's next? If Osama himself receives an invitation to speak at my local chapter of the Jaycees, is the ACLU going to go to bat for him, also?
I'm going now, to find a wall to beat my head against.
Let us hope that when the facts come out, Notre Dame withdraws its offer even before the courts uphold this application of the PA.
Under the Golden Dome
Cheer, cheer for Old Notre Dame,
Send the Jihadi cheer on high,
Make the shake downs and plunder from the sky,
What though the odds be great or be small,
The new Notre Dame converts or murders them all,
While her loyal Catholic Dhimmis are preaching
Dawa and onward to Sharia!
Go! Go! Go! Fighting Moslems! Fight the problems! Fight for Mo!
Oh yeah.
Remember the end of "Animal Farm"? The animals are looking in through the farmhouse window. The Pigs start to look more like the Humans, and the Humans more like the Pigs, until the animals could not tell them apart.
Hugh:
For item #5, what about the reason that Ramadan is persona non grata in Italy -- something to do with plotting with another party to do harm to Magdi Alam? (forgive me for any spelling error; if Paolo checks in on this thread, I'm sure he can provide some of the details).
kutabeach:
You took the words right out of my mouth - or should that be you took them right off my keyboard. I've always been astounded that people believe they have a right to enter into a foreign country (other than perhaps genuine refugees).
ACLU is now acting as a second fiddle to CAIR in America.
It has done nothing to Americans, other than sideing always for the Islamists. Arab oil money do wonders not only in America but in all of Western Christian countries. American Civil Rights were framed by our forefatheers for the protection of Americans-Not for the sake of these outsiders, who pose as Americans, but always having evil plans to overthrow America, and its people.
Ramsey Clark was long the chairman of the Natonal Council of the ACLU. He may still be as far as I know. In his ACLU capacity, Clark championed Khomeini's regime back in 1979, forecasting that the Khomeini's gang would be great supporters of civil liberties.
Anyhow, it seems that ACLU's pro-Islamic jihad position goes way back at least to 1979.
Isn't it enough for ACLU and for the federal US govt to bear in mind that ramadan's grandfather was a founder of the Muslim brotherhood?
I gave up on the ACLU long ago when they defended the Nazi march in through Skokie, Illinois, home of many elderly Holocaust survivors.
And, as for their buddies at C.A.I.R. (whose name is a conceptual impossibility, since one cannot be and "American" and "Islamic", knowing full well that Islam accepts no denigrating hyphenations with infidel dog nations), here's a little link:

(scroll to the bottom for more useful connections, and excuse my typo in a comment I left in answer to a pithy Muslim's. I mean "If so, not "If you"...)
Thanks, Waterdragon. This is a literal translation, which I will certify in a court of law if I have to, of the relevant passages in Magdi Allam's book. (And Magdi Allam is one of the most respected figures in all Italian journalism, not just as an immigrant, but on the national stage.)
''...Now it so happens that I heard about you in Italy because of the support and interest of Hamza Roberto Piccardo, National Secretary of U.C.O.I.I. (Translator's note: UCOII are nothing else than the Italian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood.) Piccardo is a former hard-left militant who uses his professional Islamism to prosecute his revolutionary ideology against capitalism and Western civilization. He loudly praises suicide bombers when they butcher Jews in Israel and americans in Iraq. Even more than Dachan, he has the cheek to deny that he is or has ever been a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, though he admits that he was granted the political and religious rank of emir by the Muslim community of western Liguria where he lives...............
Well, my dear Mr.Ramadan, it so happens that this sponsor of yours in Italy also is the person who named me as ''an enemy of Islam'' and ''a none too good Coptic Christian'', meaning a Christian who pretends to be a Muslim to defame Islam. As you are quite well aware, this kind of charges translate as a condemnation as kafir, unbeliever, murtadd, apostate, munafiq, hypocrite; and in the context of a fundamentalist reading of Shariah, they imply the death penalty. And if the person who pronounces such charges also claims to be a legitimate emir, his sentences are held to be fatwas, binding for the faithful who subjected themselves to his political and religious authority through bay'a. I would say this is not reassuring. Least of all if you add that I have been forced to accept a regular police escort because I have been threatened with death by Hamas, the name which the Muslim Brotherhood bears in the Palestinian territories, who do not like my clear and firm condemnation of Muslim terrorists who murder Israelis.''
So: Tariq Ramadan is sponsored in Italy by a former Red terrorists who has become the local boss of the Muslim Brotherhood; this man has used an ambiguous form of words which, to a Muslim mind, amounts to an order to murder Magdi Allam; another order to murder Allam has come from another branch of the Brotherhood, namely the very bloodstained Hamas; and Tariq Ramadan also has in common with his Italian sponsor Picardo that they both claim not to be Brothers.
Unfortunately, this all depends on the interpretation of words (such as what does it mean if an avowed emir declares a man kafir, murtadd and munafiq); on the premise (hard to prove in a court of law) that Picardo and Ramadan, in spite of their denials, are members of the Muslim Brotherhood; and on the premise that the Brotherhood is a fundamentally unified movement, from Palestine to Geneva, dedicated to terrorism, subversion and murder. All of these are things that an ignorant and self-satisfied left-wing judge - and we know there are a few in America - would laugh out of court, though we all know that they are to be taken seriously - as does the Italian state, to the point of giving Allam round-the-clock police protection.
Paolo:
Thanks for the refresher on the Magdi Alam/Tariq Ramadan story. Photos of Ramadan give me the creeps. I don't know how the usual suspects (in academe, politics and media)can be so willfully blind about what he is.
