KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AP) -- Suspected Taliban gunmen destroyed a coed primary school in the main southern Afghan city Sunday, first tying up two security guards before setting the buildings on fire, officials said.The attack in Kandahar was the latest in a spate of assaults that have forced many schools to close. The insurgents claim that educating girls is against Islam and they even oppose government-funded schools for boys because they teach subjects besides religion.
Suspected Taliban insurgents last Tuesday beheaded the headmaster of another coed school in the region.
And the death cult is in world wide hysteria over cartoons of mohammad???

This was a primary School.
I don't know what age a child would leave the Afghan school system for Secondary education but in the UK Primary is from 5(3 or 4 if a nursery is available) until 11. This is destroying education for the very youngest, near babies, But of course it is not logical by any standard we follow so why am I so shocked? Perhaps because I have just come from watching that age group in action in Sunday school and wanting all children to have the opportunity to grown and learn.

I'm about to head out for the same, Granny W-- 2nd grade Sunday school in my case (teaching, not attending!).
Ever go through your daily routine with a running tally in the back of your mind of all the "normal" things you couldn't do under Taliban/Wahabbist-style rule? I recommend it-- it's mind-boggling.
Reports like this should send shockwaves through the American Muslim community, which has a good number of female doctors, engineers, and scientists. Don't they think their fellow ummah-dwellers deserve the same?
Hi Shinoliite (everytime I see one of your posts I keep getting the riff from Philadelphia Freedom running through my mind, which I think is a misheard lyric on my part) What age is your US 2nd grade? I don't teach Sunday school, my contribution is a mid week Baby and Toddler club.

Hey, Granny W-- they're all somewhere around 7 years old. I'm part of a 3-person team-- one to teach, and two to keep the class in line!-- and we rotate responsibilities, so it hardly seems like work.
The odd thing the Taliban are missing out on is that, I think, rather than teaching it in isolation, religious education really helps students in other subjects, with the individual interaction, focus on discipline and attention span, and emphasis on reading and memorization.
Too bad they don't seem to care about those other subjects, since all worldly knowledge is allegedly contained in the Koran. Sounds like there's a lot of "carnal knowledge" in the hadiths, but that's about it.
THE ONLY THING WOMEN IN ISLAM NEED TO KNOW IS:
-they are like carpets, made to lie down, be silent, and get beaten now and then.
And aren't carpets beautiful, too?
Islam thus recognizes the real nature of female loveliness.
(And, if we do not oppose this cult now, they'll carpet the world.)
These "gunmen" are trying to make a point as gently as possible. Note that no one was "hurt" in this particular occasion. This is a simple but telling barometer of Taliban control in each community. Are locals rebuilding these schools after they are destroyed?

The British will be part of a 6,000-strong NATO expansion into southern Afghanistan that was agreed last week, allowing the United States to withdraw up to 4,000 soldiers. Canada is to send 2,000 troops to Kandahar province, the Netherlands has plans to send 1,100 to Uruzgan and Britain will take control of Helmand.
But the mission is becoming mired in political sensitivities. The Dutch, mindful of the Srebrenica debacle - when its isolated troops allowed a Serb massacre to take place - want guarantees of US back-up should its troops get into trouble.
The UK plan is also becoming bogged down. Early reports said the force would be 2,000 strong and led by the Paratroop 16 Air Assault Brigade. But sources say the Defence Secretary, John Reid, is having second thoughts."
Is the euro military so spineless that 1,100 Dutch troops are afraid they might need backup? One thousand professionally-trained soldiers cant take care of themselves?
Good grief, no wonder that continent is sliding into dhimmitude; if such a force of soldiers cant defend themselves then the civilian populations are surely doomed.
