Women's Rights In Islam Alert from Iran, via Reuters, with thanks to Twostellas:
THE Iranian Government hasordered the closure of a daily newspaper and banned a new women's bi-weekly from publication in the first media crackdown since President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad took office in August."The Supervisory Board on the Press agreed to the temporary closure of Asia newspaper and Nour-e Banovan and ordered their cases sent to court," said the Culture Ministry in the ban.
No reason was given for the closure and ban although a journalist at the economic daily Asia said the paper had been given a warning in recent months for printing photographs of women considered to have been improperly dressed.
Nour-e Banovan, a planned bi-weekly publication aimed at women, has not yet been published.
More than 100 publications have been closed by the Iranian government since 2000 although many have re-opened under different names and scores of titles still exist.
for printing photographs of women considered to have been improperly dressed.
I can understand why the government would close the paper down, bare ankles are a sure sign of societal collapse. Or was it...*GASP*...bare forearms?!
Wait: It hasn't yet been published, but got shut down for printing photos with improperly dressed women?
How do you say "Catch 22" in Farsi?
Iran's national anthem should be changed to the old Rolling Stones number:
"UNDER MY THUMB"
(Although "THUMBSCREW" might be more accurate.)
Islam is 'protecting women', remember? Women in Islam 'enjoy an elevated position'...
The Taliban were the future. Saudi Arabia is NOW!
Europe is tomorrow!
OBL is not kidding when he tells the West that women must not be allowed to work, he believes this s*#t, and not only him.
HE is the future, possibly the 'Mahdi', the big bad MF they all been looking forward to...
Why don't we believe them?
Gee, it's been a whole day since that story came out...awaiting the feminist outcry...still waiting...
Hey Becky don't hold you breathe for too long. The NOW gang and the other feminists are waiting for President Bush to do the same thing. That way they can justify overlooking the Iranian "terrorist in chief" Ahmadinejad and blame President Bush for influencing the Iranian "terrorist in chief". Not that the koran and Islam has anything to do with it. The 'religion of peace" respects women. It dosen't treat them like non people!!! No not Islam!!!
You guys are missing the whole point here. Iran is serving women's best interests. If an "inappropriate" picture is seen by a muslim man, he may become sexually arounsed and FORCED to take action against any woman for the offense (i.e. rape). When the raped woman accuses the man of rape, there won't be 4 eye-witnesses and she will then be sentenced to death for having sex outside of marriage.
So, by eliminating the "inappropriate" pictures they're keeping women from being killed. Can't you see the humanitarian logic in that?

I'm surprised that the women's publication was allowed to be published in the first place. So what else is new???
