As a result of the trial, al-Arian has been forced to admit that he did, in fact, have an intimate working relationship with Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ). Why? Throughout the 90’s, the body of evidence against al-Arian grew. An organization he founded, the Islamic Conference of Palestine (ICP) hosted an annual conference that played host to what the Tampa Tribune dubbed a “militant all-star team”: Islamic Jihad founder Abdel Aziz-Odeh, Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman (spiritual leader of the 1993 World Trade Center bombers), leading Hamas official Mohammed Sakr, and high-ranking Sudanese terrorist Hassan Turabi. The paper also reported that ICP publications had “articles [that] solicited contributions for the Islamic Jihad and Hamas.”
At the 1990 ICP conference, Al-Arian addressed the crowd of 200 people in St. Louis called for “true armed jihad against the enemy in Israel.” At an ICP conference the next year in Chicago, the supposedly mild-mannered professor riled the crowd with a fiery rallying cry: “Advance, advance until Jerusalem! Victory is to Islam!”
But al-Arian didn’t want to stop at Jerusalem. At a Cleveland ICP conference in 1991, he exhorted the audience to accept nothing less than a “Palestine" that spans from “from the river to the sea”—meaning from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea, or all of the West Bank, Gaza, and Israel. And his bloodthirst was not confined to Jews in the Middle East. His sights were also set on his adopted home country. In that same speech, he said, “Let us damn America. Let us damn Israel. Let us damn their allies until death.”
None of this has been denied. It can’t be. Al-Arian was on candid camera at each of these conferences...

TAMPA - For the first time, some of the nation's most prominent Muslim leaders will visit Tampa en masse to jump into the Sami Al-Arian fray.They'll gather today at the federal courthouse downtown to express their frustration over Al-Arian's treatment and rally for a resolution.
Despite support for Al-Arian, many shied away from the routine protests surrounding the case. Now, the "demonizing and criminalization" of Muslims has united organizations, said Mahdi Bray, executive director of the Muslim American Society's Freedom Foundation in Washington. The Muslim religion is decentralized, with no top leader or worldwide council....
Ahmed Younis, national director of the Muslim Public Affairs Council and speaker at today's rally and media conference, said his organization does not get involved in cases that are pending but is interested in policy and broader issues.
"That's been our stance," Younis said. "We don't defend individuals and get into the nitty-gritty. Here, the government presented its case, and there was an acquittal by a jury of his peers. This is more of a seminal case about the Patriot Act and diplomacy issues."
Nihad Awad, who founded the Council on American-Islamic Relations 11 years ago, said Thursday the jury's verdict should be a clear statement to the government, but prejudice may be in the way of releasing Al-Arian.
"The government should just let it go," he said. "We all waited to see what would happen. He was innocent until proven guilty. The verdicts were made, and there is no reason to hold him."

In case anyone was wondering why we should support President Bush's attempt to circumvent some of the legal oversight of the war on terror -this is why. We have this guy on tape making statements of support for PIJ, on tape saying "damn America" in the context of an Islamic convention (which constitutes SEDITION) and all involved basically know of this guys guilt, yet perhaps the level of evidence against him does not rise to beyond a reasonable doubt. In this war on terror, we cannot afford to allow men like Al-Aryan to walk. Period.
One opinion offered on the Al-Arian trial is that the prosecution made a critical error in the charge they brought against him. I think if these folks keep stirring things up, not only will they not get him released, they could see him get charged again and bounced out of the country anyway. Are they totally unaware of what the US government did with Ernst Zundel?

Al-Arian can't and shouldn't be re-tried on the counts that couldn't be proven in court, but he can be tried for other criminal offences that he was not charged with. I understand that part of reason for the failure to convict was the mush-headed judge buying the "freedom of speech" argument and the other the prosecution trying to make a difficult case stick on a point I can't quite recall at the moment. Had the prosecutors gone after him for incitement-related charges, they would likely have succeeded. I guess that was the difficulty the jurors were presented with. No doubt they would have liked to convict him, but on narrow points they were unable to.
I just hope he can't get rehired anywhere, in spite of how liberal and Palestinian-coddling academia has become.
If I had no choice but to take a class with Prof. Al-Arian, I'd change my major.

I attended a talk by Father Cyprian Davis a number of years ago where he offered an alternative history that hasn't gotten the same airplay, uncovering evidence that large numbers of slaves abducted and transported across the Atlantic were in fact Christians, and Catholic, at that.
And how many more of the native African Muslims were Christian before that conquest, and converted at sword-point?

Here in the United States we have been experiencing a population shift with black families leaving the north and moving back to the south, the land their forefathers had fled. I think the reason for this is the strong black Christian community in the south. They raise their children to say "yes, Ma'am and no, Sir," to sit up straight at the table and to say their prayers. In my experience of the south, black children are almost unfailingly more polite and well behaved than white children. But in the case of both, the politeness of the children is a direct result of the community upholding those standards. Christian communities are much more likely to do this and to lend support to families struggling against the general immorality of our times.
It seems that only where the Christian community has broken down, where the family has broken down, does Islam gain ground against Christianity.

It is to be desired that our agreement with England on fighting the slave trade and the import of weapons to East Africa will have the shape of an international agreement. Such a document would establish limits for the expansion of the continued expansion of the Muslim and slave trading movement, by the moral impression by the accord of the two European powers so far engaged there, and also, more propably, will lead to the cooperation of the other European states engaged. I propose the exchange of notifications between us and Britain, in which we take upon ourselves the obligation, under the condition (p.412) on an equal participation of Britain for the same purpose, to fight the anti-Christian and anti-civilizatoric movement which has emerged over the last years on the African continent, and to recognize the prohibition of the export of slaves and the import of arms and ammunition as the most effective means, as it is only the possession of superior arms ans ammunitions which enables the Arab and Muslim minority to undertake slave hunts and wars necessary to obtain slaves, and to keep up the superiority of their race in Africa's interior.
The slave trade and the initiative Britain has taken to combat it, have been origin and incentive to the union of all elements interested in the matter, and which have made it possible to use Muslim fanaticism in the interest of this over one thousand years old tradition of African slave trade and to call on them for war. The effects of this movement, large and small, can be seen in the positions of the Mahdi, of Tippu Tip and in the rising number of murders of Europeans in Africa's interior. To transfer christianity and European civilization to Africa by armed force is not feasible because of the width of the country and of the climate. The indigenous population would be susceptible to the European efforts if it was not suppressed by the force of arms, the higher intelligence and the
cohesion of the Arab Muslims. We could outmatch the latter only, if we strike at the source of their superiority, superior armament and the realisation of their profits, by the suppression of the import of arms and the export of slaves.
Therefore I regard it a task no Christian nation should exclude itself from, to interrupt as far as possible the import of weapons and ammunition to Africa's interior and the export of slaves. This task shall be mainly taken care of by the two powers most interested in the Sultanate of Zanzibar, Germany and Britain; but to its complete solution it is recommended, to, soon, gain the cooperation of the neighbouring Portuguese government and of His Majesty the King of Belgium for the Congo Free State. It is also recommended to kindly ask the French government for their cooperation, in order to prevent arms import into the Congo area and in order to end the abuse of the French flag in East Africa by Arab dhows.
Your Excellency will request Lord Salisbury to confirm his approval with these opinions by a note to Sir Edward Malet, in order to cause the British navy to join in a concerted blockade of the Zanzibar coast, and, like us, but operating separately, to ask the previously mentioned governments to decree respective instructions.

I don't have any statistics, but it seems logical that many of the black Americans that are converting are those already feeling disenfrachised, sucked in by the rhetoric of Jesse Jackson and possibly already have been in and out of the prison system. Their dogmatic belief that they are the always a victim render them incapable of triumphing over life's challenges (and don't we all have them?) prime targets for the ultimate in victimization... Islam. Malcolm X wrote that he was amazed when he went on his pilgrimage to Mecca that there were people of all races, possibly leading many blacks to believe there was no racism in Islam.
