Norfolk Officer Says Man Tried to Recruit Him for Terrorist Cause

I know absolutely nothing about this, and have never heard about it before, so as far as I know, Jihad Watch actually had nothing to do with it. If I find out anything else, I'll let you know. From AP, with thanks to all who sent this in:

(AP) - A Jordanian living in Ohio tried to recruit a Norfolk police officer for a terrorist cause, the officer testified in a federal hearing in Dayton, Ohio.

David Vazquez testified Wednesday in federal court that Mohammed Radwan Obeid told him in an e-mail that he was helping to start an operation that would dwarf the 2001 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, D.C.

Vazquez said he contacted Obeid through two Web sites, including jihadwatch.org, and contacted the FBI after reading Obeid's e-mails....

Reference librarian Laura Girolamo testified Wednesday that Obeid apparently sent e-mail about gun silencers and constructing hydrogen bombs on a computer at the Troy-Miami County Public Library. She contacted the FBI as well.

Obeid's lawyer, Shawn Kelly, challenged Vazquez's interpretation of the e-mail and said he doubted Girolamo could know for sure that Obeid sent the e-mails from the library.

Obeid's attorneys have argued that he visited terrorist Web sites because he was conducting research for a book about terrorism and world religions.

The reference to contacting terrorists through jihadwatch.org reminds me of some of the howlers Spencer puts up on ocassion from idiots who think he's one of the head jihadis on Earth. They get as far as the word "jihad" and go off on tangents wanting to join up. Leave it to the MSM to be as stupid as the average Muslim peasant.

And on the topic of setting up meetings, Voltaire and I are going for coffee on Jan. 26,of of which you can read more here:

I, aka sonofwalker, will be at McDonald's at 7 pm, Jan 26, at Main and Terminal sts. in Vancouver, Canaada. I'll wear a blue scarf, and I'll buy you a cup of coffee if you show up.

I'll be at McDonalds in Sydney, Australia, on the 26th January as well. That will be Australia Day, and I assume that they will be open then.

I'll be at the McDonalds which is opposite the George St Cinemas, and right next to Planet Hollywood, and which is called Plaza Court. It's at 600 George St, just down from Town Hall. I'll be there between 7.00 and 9.00 pm in the evening.

I'll be wearing a light blue scarf.

See you there.

And one more thing:

The stormy petrel flies at 4 p.m.

I will testify here and now that at no time has Mr Spencer ever tried to lure me into his lurid schemes of world domination.

Hugh, however...

Hugh:

Please, please do this! Henny, Henny, Frankie! You didn't meet him; you didn't even meet me; the glove will fit what I say...Oh, kayiyi, kayiyi! Sure, who cares? When are you through! How do you know this? Well, then...Oh, Cocoa; no... thinks he is a grandpa again and he is jumping around. No, Hoboe and Poboe I think I mean the same thing.

Don't tell me Dutch was in on it too?

This librarian may now be in mortal danger because she has done the right thing -- Now that she has been publicly outed, will law enforcement and the Feds protect her?

This is a horrifying example of the concentric damage which can be inflicted on our society by the Muslim menace in our midst... Would YOU be brave enough to testify publicly in this manner? It's a question all the bleeding hearts need to ask themselves whenever they trumpet all the empty platitudes about differentiating between the "radical" Muslims and the so-called "moderate" Muslims which reside here...

Would YOU be comfortable, after testifying in a case such as this, on the notion that you can effectively differentiate between the "moderate" and the "radical"? Would YOU be comfortable relying on the Muslim community to police its own ranks, when so many of the "leaders" seem to be infected with sympathy, if not downright zeal, for the anti-Western, anti-American jihad? My heart goes out to the librarian for her heroic testimony in this case...

It also sheds light on the inadequacy of standard law courts to hear cases which involve Islamic sedition and insurrection... If this Jordanian has US citizenship, then he has been engaged in acts of treason and should be shot forthwith... If he is not a citizen, then he should not be entitled to the range of rights and privileges afforded citizens of the USA... Standard courts aren't up to the task of prosecuting these treacherous and dangerous vermin. The attachment of punishment will invariably not be commensurate with the crimes Jihadis are guilty of, and the endangerment of hapless citizens who may be caught up in the web of their Jihad is dangerous in the extreme, both for their own safety, and, in the event that she is victimized further by Islamic hatred and Jihad, the silencing through terror of subsequent witnesses and patriots...

Hugh:

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

Yeah, okay, they may have sited the wrong website, but if it's true how cool is this!!! The good guys are watching out for us.

David Vazquez, if you're reading this, you're my hero!

(ps: the sparrow hops at 4)

Monitoring public libraries (ala "The Patriot Act") doesn't seem so stupid now

No, it doesn't.

And they say there's no such thing as bad publicity.

Perhaps the good officer was confusing JihadWatch with Jihad Unspun, which is a rather more jihad-friendly web forum than JW.

Hugh and Robert,

Don't forget the monkey's paw. It is in the glove box of the convertable.

I wouldn't be surprised that a jihadist would implicate jihadwatch.org, in fact one might expect it.

But it was the police officer who testified under oath that he met the jihadist here. Let's hope we don't have a "If the glove doesn't fit, you must acquit" moment here that allows the jihadist to walk free.

I'm pretty sure we would've remembered someone here recruiting for an attack to dwarf 9/11, that's the sort of thing that would stick in your mind.

For the record, whenever I have met Hugh (twice now, I believe), he was wearing sunglasses, a fedora, and trenchcoat with the collar up.

As a former Ohioan, I wonder: what is it with Ohio and terrorists? Ayman Faris, the Kindhearts charity (which always reminds me of the Hav-a-Heart animal trap), and now this.

Ohio just seems to have more than its share, and in improbable places. Surely this is the fruition of the component of jihad involving migration and reproduction. You've got to have people on the ground before they can move onto the armed part of jihad.

jsla, if you're going to let fear dominate your decision to do the right thing, well then you'll just be another frightended liberal. If you really feel threatened, well that's when you should be packing iron.

Now this is getting even more confussing??

Guy in Ohio contacts someone in VA then goes to FL to send e-mails ???

Guess the rabbits holes are streached pretty far?

But the real confussing thing is the advancement of mulsums in knowing how to make??

constructing hydrogen bombs

czekmark your inference is odious... I don't need to prove my personal bona fides to you or anyone else -- Ignoring the deleterious effects of terrorism as I state them is foolish in the extreme... Pounding your chest and warbling about your personal apotheosis through the 2nd amendment is meaningless to the discussion... What will you do if/when your family is victimized by preventable Islamic terrorism because some putative US citizen was too frightened to report what he/she knows? Is that too difficult for you to envision? If so, you have little to contribute to the discussion...

You seem to infer that I am revealing whether or not I would be fearful to testify -- to "do what's right"... It's simpleton reasoning like yours which cheapens the discussion here, and makes some think that Americans are little more than stupid hicks...

Oh, that Norfolk.

...makes some think that Americans are little more than stupid hicks....

The discussion suffers from all kinds of generalised silliness, regardless of which side of the pond it springs from. If someone writes something one might take offence to if one is really trying hard to find it, then may I humbly suggest that instead of finding offence from the Internet one go to McDonald's on the 26th to meet people face to face, an un-English thing to do as a rule, but what the heck. Yes, there are McDonald's diners in England. If you have anything worthwhile to contribute other than the most erudite and sprakling posts, go out and meet people to organise with. Get practical and do something real. One might even organise a prissy little group of anti-jihad offence-takers. The English, some might think, are little more than socially crippled wankers who can't have common conversation with other than their dogs, but it's possible that if one can find those of like class they can still manage to form a group of postive and active organisers who really do something of worth. There is a danger that an englishman with a blue scarf will be found next day choked on his doorknob. There might be achance of finding one sensible and prudent enough to actually go to McDonalds where he or she might rub shoulders with the workingclass-- heavens!-- and meet people with whom one might work for a practical end.

But then, perhaps I'm being a stupid hick like Americans in general.

I have always wondered if jsla was French or another mulsum who runs away??

Did anyone see that video of the Mother who jumped out of her car to beat the criminal who recked her car??

Now that is what Americans are made of!!!

Just slid over the hood of her car and started beating the guy WOW..

Now thats what I'm talking about.

jsla Americans are not the French!!!

we don't let mulsums burn our cars well the red states anyway..

You've got it all wrong. English dogs are awfully classy, and any conversations you might have with them are not common at all, but rather posh.

The English are well-bred, but there are no class distinctions, otherwise I wouldn't be posting on a website like this.

What is this MacDonalds, of which you speak? Would you allow your wife or servants to visit such a low class eatery? Does it serve spotted dick, bubble and squeak, or prunes and custard?

There is a danger that an englishman with a blue scarf will be found next day choked on his doorknob.

Many an Englishman has choked on a knob. The blue scarf is not material.

Does it serve spotted dick, bubble and squeak, or prunes and custard?

I'm sure the McDick, McSqueak, and McRuin-Perfectly-Good-Custard-By-Adding-Prunes are soon to hit a value menu near you.

Actually, the blue scarf must be material - by definition.

Less seriously, if you noticed the post above you will have seen that Voltaire and I are meeting the willing at our respective and receptive McDonald's diners in the hope of finding others inour cities who wish to sit down and insult each other face to face over our prefered dining tastes. When we finish doing that we hope to find common ground with those we meet to pound out whatever practical mattters come to mind in the hope of confronting our Muslims cousins more effectively than we have to date. Come as you are, trench coat optional.

If you've noticed the blue scarf discussion here and elsewhere you'll see in this pattern, clear as the azure skies, that we will wear the damned scargves in solidarity with the Fwench who are sick and tired of being bullied by the yoots of their also fair land. A blue scarf, not my first fashion pick, is a secret handshake for the age of socially communicable diseases. Ahem.

Every village on earth has a McDonald's. If you wish to meet your fellow anti-jihadis from here, sit in one of them at 7-9 on Jan. 26. Let people here know which one so they can go to see what you're like. Face the fact that you're probably not important enough to raise the ire of the umma to the point that out of the whole world's population they will pick you to kill. So sorry.

We can write letters here for years (oh!) and nothing much comes of it. Or we can sit down in public and welcome our friends and make plans to act within our communities together with people we actually know. And if one is afraid of meeting in the open, then what do we say of Muslims who go to mosques in our cities five times a day every day of the year without harassment at all?

Voltaire and I will sit with our blue scarves in McDonald's cafes and we'll wait for people to come and sit with us. The scariest part of it is the coffee. I'll be in Vancouver, Canada. See post #3 above for details. Do it yourself if you're not in Vancouver or with Voltaire.

The English should envy me here. The weather sucks.

sonofwalker -

I agree. I cannot be in a MacDonalds on that day at that time but I will be wearing a pale blue scarf in the cafe of whatever auction house we are supposed to be at that Thursday.

Greetings Gents...

I have not a trench coat. I would like to buy one, but the best are presented by Burberrys of London. But I believe the prices start at $1,000.00 US. They also have this really neat pocket for hiding your secret decoder ring. Perhaps we can organize and get a group discount from Burberrys?

If anyone here (Granny Weatherwax? ) is in London, and you happen to be in the neighborhood ( Knightsbridge? Kensington Road? ) just pop in and price check for me. Maybe just a telephone call will suffice.

Texans? Anybody? Bueler?

Greetings,

I am the police officer referred to in this particular story.

I did NOT testify, nor have I stated, that I met any terrorist on this website. Also, the press got it wrong, stating that I "initiated contact with him through" these websites, making it sound as if I "met" Mr Obeid on jihadwatch.

What happened is that I learned of and about this individual by way of Jihadwatch and other websites. This indivual was written about on several websites and even in some of the MSM prior to my contacting him. He had already been in a lot of hot water for doing such things as (allegedly) attempting to publish information about making "nuclear" or dirty bombs on jihadist websites etc. Specifically, i read about this person in the March, 2005 Jihadwatch article "Dirty bomb instructions published on jihadist website". At roughly the same time, the website Jawa Report picked up the same story and actually somehow acquired the email address of this terrorist. This is how I contacted the individual, and this is what I testified to in court. It is lamentable that the press did not report this. It may have something to do with the fact that the word "jihadwatch" is much sexier than "Jawa Report". Sorry, Dr Shackleford.

Again, I did not, and have never stated that, I met any terrorists "on" this website.

I am an avid reader of Jihadwatch, obviously, and have a great deal of respect for Robert Spencer. I have read 2 of his books and found them fascinating, informative and well-written.

It is partly thanks to him and to Dr Shackleford of Jawa Report that this dangerous person is now in custody. So you see, Mr. Spencer, you *did* have something to do with it.

Wow, Robert! Web-hoster and author by day, terror-buster by night! Clark Kent moves to Undisclosed Locationville...

I'll bet the Jihadists will never get hold of Kryptonite - green or red. ;-)

Wolfenberry:

Thank you very much. Clearly Dr. Shackleford deserves all the credit.

However, in honor of the information you have provided here I think I will have to invest in a trench coat and dark glasses.

I hope you get a good promotion or something.

Hello all,

Congratulations to you MR. Spencer & Officer Wolfenberry. Truly another bad guy has been put away. I am an Ahmadi muslim...and I hate the Jihadist who would want to cause harm to anyone.

So much for the detractors who accuse JW of being a "hate site". But I do wish bloggers here would exercise better judgment in expressing themselves about jihad ideology, its perniciousness and its threat to humanity.

"I am an Ahmadi muslim...and I hate the Jihadist who would want to cause harm to anyone."
-- from a posting above by "Naseem"

Compare the sentiment expressed, with other sentiments expressed by the same poster, predicting with glee the takeover of this and other Infidel countries by Muslims, by an Islam that is, she/he foresees, will implacably march -- possibly peacefully -- to triumph, through Da'wa and demographic conquest. Shares the same goal as the person picked up, and whose picking-up she joins in celebrating ("I late the Jihadist who would want to cause harm to anyone") but does not "hate the Jihadist" who works to spread Islam to cover the globe, by other means.

But those of us who do not relish the prospect of Islam covering the globe, even by those other means, have nothing to share with this poster -- no fellow-feeling, no sympathy, no nothing. She shares the same disturbing goal as the man picked up, and has repeatedly expressed, in the most fiendish and at the same time naive way, her attitudes.

Attempt at feigning fellow-feeling rejected. Not enough. Not nearly enough.

Congratulations to Wolfenberry, Dr. Shackleford, and Robert.

Might I suggest a ceremonial playing of the theme from "Shaft."

"They say this cat Robert he's a baaaaaaad mutha-shut-yo-mouth!"

Hello all

Hugh says "but (Naseem) does not "hate the Jihadist" who works to spread Islam to cover the globe, by other means".

I have to disagree whole heartily your definition of Jihadist in this context.

My love of Islam and the spread of Islam is completely peaceful....which COMPLETELY contridicts the definition of Jihadist.

You want to lump (for the readers here and globally) the two and consider them one and the same entity....

and this from the mighty Hugh Fitzgerald...one who chooses his definitions and words so carefully .....shame on you!

Any reader may google "Posted by Naseem" and find dozens of examples of proleptic gloating over the defeat of the Infidels, and the triumph of Islam. Interspersed with these sentiments are others, expressing a wistful desire to visit that distant West, to be accepted by those Infidels, to somehow express the anguish, without expressing it, of being locked into a belief-system, and a life, that this "Naseem" dimly comprehends as not the real thing, but cannot make that mental escape over the north wall while the warden, the Imam of Conscience, is looking. One would be more sympathetic if that gloating, that wishing-for-something-that-she-does-not-quite-really-wish-for, were not so present.

SCV, re Burberry and their trenchcoats, you may want to look at this site :-
http://www.burberryplc.com/

Burberry do most of their quality trade overseas these days. In the UK the famous biege check was taken up by a rather vulgar type called Chavs, in style somewhat akin to what I believe you call trailer trash in the US. Much of their gear is fake burberry but the mud is sticking. You do not want to look like this.

http://freespace.virgin.net/chav.scum/images/skwiggypop.jpg

Very nice work, Robert, Dr. Shackleford, and especially Wolfenberry for pulling it all together.

Seeing the success that a few non-Muslims have in finding and prosecuting a jihadist, it makes me wonder why there aren't many more cases of "moderate" Muslims turning in the "radical" Muslims amongst us. You guys make it look so simple, just a phone call or two, that's all it would take to get the ball rolling.

"You guys make it look so simple..."

Could it possibly be because it is simple? Indeed -- what's stopping the "moderate" Muslims from turning in their "radical" brethren? Inquiring readers want to know...!

Texans? Anybody? Bueler?

Shinoliite,

Email me......

Certiorari, I hope that if you do well at your task this week you'll be able next week to sit among the people and encourage discussion of Islam at the West's most ubiquitous secular public meeting place. Writng letters is a fine thing, a wonderful thing, and a happy thing; but it is in the face-to-face meetings that we make some difference. Our Muslim cousins have world-wide their mosques to meet at, and we, poor lost souls, have McDonalds.

Will we be attcked at McDonalds? Will a gaggle of enraged Muslims come squawking for our blood? Will they butcher us in front of dozens of low-rent diners and their fat kiddies? Kinda doubt it. But if it were to happen, think of all the letters our fellows here could write for a week or two. I could alomst smile from my enthusiasm.

Who's going to risk the aprobrium of sitting in public as an anti-jihadist pro-Modernist? So far the grand total of two of us, neither in America or Britain or France or any of the nations at the greatest risk. So what? I'll stand up and sit at McD. I don't care how bad the coffee is. I'll risk it.

Thank you, Officer Wolfenberry.
