American Muslims were stunned after 9/11 when the U.S. government accused their three largest charities of financing terror groups and shut them all down.For many Muslims, it was dismaying enough to learn that some of their money may have been used for nefarious purposes. But they also faced a practical problem: how to pay "zakat," the 2.5 percent annual "income tax" that all Muslims are supposed to donate to charity.
Eventually a group of Toledo Muslims filled the void by forming a new charity, KindHearts, whose mission is to support needy Palestinians in Lebanon, Gaza and the West Bank. Today, it's one of the largest Muslim charities in the country, collecting more than $4 million a year in donations.
But this very success has helped to intensify government scrutiny.
Last year, the U.S. Senate Finance Committee listed KindHearts as one of 25 Muslim nonprofit groups under investigation for suspected links to terror groups. That inquiry ended quietly, but Justice Department sources say the 25 groups are still being watched.
Terrorism analyst Steve Emerson, meanwhile, singled out KindHearts in testimony this year before the Senate Banking Committee. He outlined half a dozen connections - some strong, others not - between KindHearts and terror groups or radical Islam.
KindHearts flatly denies any involvement with terror.
Jihad Smaili, a Cleveland attorney who represents KindHearts and sits on its board of directors, dismissed Emerson as a "witch hunter" who falsely connects all Muslim charities to terrorism. Smaili said the charity has taken great care to keep its money out of terrorists' hands.
Yet KindHearts has two clear links to the three shuttered charities. Smaili's brother Khaled, a fund-raiser for one of them, is now chief executive of KindHearts.
And the endowment director of another closed charity, Mohammed El Mezain, worked under contract for KindHearts until he was indicted on charges of conspiracy, aiding a terrorist group and money laundering.

Christian Aid, Cafod and other Christian charities don't just help Christians. So why do Muslim "charities" only support "needy Palestinians" and other Muslims? If they were more even-handed, perhaps we would not be so suspicious of them.

I haven't read 1966 and All That yet. Having bought it for my husband for Christmas I had better let him read it first. I am still on Bat Ye'or's Decline of Eastern Christianity under Islam, which is not a quick or easy read, although interesting and worthwhile.

Actually, the first Middle Eastern immigrants to Toledo were Christians, mostly from Lebanon around 1900 (desendants include Jamie Farr, Danny Thomas, and a bunch of great restaurants around town). The Muslim immigrants followed, again mostly from Lebanon and Syria, about 40 years later; Toledo didn't have an "Islamic Center" until 1954.
I did some browsing on the Center's website, and I think it speaks to the Saudification (better yet, Saud-omy) of Islam. Look at the older pictures, and the men and women are indistinguishable from any Christian church function.

Fast-forward 40 years, and I recall the younger sister of my American Muslim classmates who took the hijab and jilbab and left an essay called "Why I Became a Warrior for Islam" on a lab computer at the university. Quite a change.

I always laugh when I see that "Muslims discovered America B4 Euro's - or they discovered Australia before Euro's" Why?? Islamic people - no matter whether they are the revolutionaries (Bin Laden Jihadi types) or the evolutionary types (Kayser Trad - the wolf in sheeps clothing AND the most dangerous and numerous in our societies) all say how Allah "guides them". When you put two and two together, and it is the express desire to see Islam all over the world, well, why the HELL didn't they settle these continents?????
I mean, if one looks at history, at the time of Columbus' discovery, Christian Europe was on the ropes thanks to Islam. Spain was constantly fighting them on behalf of all of Western Europe (it's why her navy was so HUGE, not because the Spanish hated the English!), the Muslims had already conquered huge swathes of central Europe and the underbelly of Russia (where we still see the fighting today). In fact at the time, Islam DID control, for the most part, the largest swathes of the "known world" (I hate that term as it excludes the Chinese - the greatest and longest lasting empire ever - in my opinion).
In fact the thing that saved Spain from being retaken was her huge army/navy. How did she pay for all of that to keep the Muslims at bay and out of France and Europe for a second time? With all the gold from the America's that's how. If the mad Muslims, who were desperate to take back Dar Al Islam Spain and France KNEW about these great and rich continents, then why the hell didn't they take them????? They had gunpowder LONG before the Europeans (we Europeans learnt it’s force and use via Islamic love, refined it and yes, conquered the world. All the Muslims did was steal it from the Chinese and used Islamic ingenuity on it; in other words they did nothing to it!)
Do we find any Muslim settlements (like some of the disputed ancient Viking ones found in Canada/Alaska that predate the Indians?). Nope - not a bone of evidence!
ANS: Muslims didn't have a clue about the ‘New World’. They may have had some inkling from the Chinese, and the odd European, but other than that - they didn't know squat. If they did they would have taken the America’s and Australia, and all their rich resources sooner - and ultimately controlled the globe. Just like Europe did for a time (but not for religious reasons - at first it was sheer survival that drove the Spanish keeping the Islamic hordes away, followed by European greed). Maybe the Allah that discovered the “New World” before Europeans is the same Allah that has failed three times to remove 5 million Jews, outnumbered on more than 300:1, on three fronts, holding onto land barely 15km in it’s width from Israel…….er Palestine (there now all the Jihadi’s and lefties are happy – I said “Palestine” instead of Israel!)

This is the excuse they need some they can "retake" the land back under the wing of Islam. It justifies Jihad, and for them to be able to do anything for that cause, even if it seems to violate the Koran. Special rules (they can do anything as evil as they want) come into play.
You Spanish history regarding the final expulsion of the Muslim scourge needs a little work too. It was the Christians in the northern remote regions which were too difficult to the Muhammadans to kill, who never fell under the dhimmitude of the Muhammadans that kicked the bums out.
St James, or some other St. somebody (big statue of a guy on a horse) Is still their revered St today. But he's been under attack by the left and intolerant muslims in Spain today. I'm not sure when it was or how it turned out, but a few years back there was a push to have his statue removed from Spanish courts and government buildings because it was degrading to Muslims.
Maybe someone here knows the whole complete and more accurate story.

The interpretation of the Koran has been fixed once for all by the orthodox commentators. This interpretation is final, and no Muslim may modify it under penalty of apostasy. This irrevocable prohibition prevents Islamic nations from all progress, which is why it's stuck in the barbaric 7th century. They never had civilized life at that time, therefore they have nothing to teach.
Galloway should take a big gulp of the wonderous Islamic cure all (Camel pee) maybe it will cure him of the delusions he's suffering from.

Voice of The Martyrs based in Normanville, Oklahoma, it supports Christians that face persecution and death in all these hellish countries, so does World Vision, both are excellent organizations that I have supported for years. My son just joined the USMC, half of me wants to nuke the Arab world, the other half of me pays to support a Muslim family in Ghana, who I have been trying, without much success, to tell them that Jesus Christ is the one true God and this Allah dude is a questionable figure at best. They don't beleive me, the tell me they are very serious about their religion, no doubt they are.

well actually I do support a little girl who is a Christian in Malawi and also a boy in Lebanon who is Christian and I wanted one more, the third time I let World Vision pick a family for me and they gave me these Muslims in Ghana. I tell you there are days when I think I am the world's biggest sucker for giving any Muslim anywhere any support but at the same time something tells me the Christian thing to do is to help all people anywhere, that is what makes us different from the Muslims.

Barnabas Fund for persecuted Christians does. http://www.barnabasfund.org/ The Christmas appeal which a group locally supported this Christmas is for a school, Pillar of Faith, for Christian children in a shanty town in Cairo.
They also have a fund for Christian victims of the Pakistan earthquake.
Shinoliite, do you still live in Toledo? I also live in Toledo. The sad thing is that you can't get anyone to pay any attention to the Muslims and the big mosque sitting off of I-75. My understanding is that that mosque is paid for with Saudi money.

I actually moved out of NW Ohio in August to attend grad school in Texas.
Two funny stories about the Big White Monster on I-75 in Perrysburg:
I remember being about 8 and riding in the car along I-75 with my dad; we passed the mosque and he pointed to the minarets and said, "Those are the Ayatollah's rockets!"
We watched a video about the mosque in high school in which the imam at the time said that while the mosque was being built, he listened to a CB radio to see what passers-by had to say. One trucker thought it was a Mexican restaurant! If the locals keep up the shady charity ties, there's an idea for the real estate.
I don't foresee The Blade pursuing it aggressively, though, since it doesn't involve the Ohio GOP. ;)
No Muslim would ever support a non-Muslim child in the same spirit. Ever, except in order to win points, from Infidels, for Islam. I think you should shift whatever funds go to supporting a Muslim child in Ghana to using the same money in support of Christian missionaries in Ghana, or Christian children in the southern Sudan.
Why? Because if you truly wish this child well, the best thing you can do for him is to try to wean him away from Islam. The cause of Muslim poverty, Muslim misrule, Muslim intellectual paralysis, is -- Islam. Do the decent thing. Help prevent more people from falling for Islam, or help those who have already fallen somehow find their way out.
That is, if you care enough about the real welfare of these people.

As for "do good to those that hate you"...as Hugh said, the best thing we can do is help prevent more people from falling for Islam.
Islam needs to be socially, geographically and politically isolated in my opinion.
I personally would rather see any money I donated to charity go to needy Christians.
