Afghanistan: Four killed as crowd attacks Norwegian base

More cartoon deaths. "Four killed as crowd attacks Norwegian base," from Reuters, with thanks to JE:

Afghan police opened fire on a mob trying to storm a NATO peacekeeping base housing Norwegian troops on Tuesday, killing four people as protests over cartoons depicting Islam's Prophet Mohammed flared again.

British troops were sent to the north-western town of Maymana to secure the airfield after crowds attacked a NATO base with guns and grenades.

"Police had to open fire. Some people are aiming to disrupt and disturb security," said Azim Hakimi, spokesman for the provincial security department.

"Some people used guns," he said. As well as the four dead, 18 people were wounded, he said.

At least nine people have been killed in protests linked to the controversy over the cartoons - in Somalia, Lebanon and seven in Afghanistan.

In Maymana, crowds of young men threw stones, grenades and petrol bombs at the camp manned by Norwegian troops. Five Norwegians were slightly hurt, Norway said.

A Dutch peacekeeper was hurt by a stone during a protest in Baghlan, also in the north, the provincial governor said.

The heavily outnumbered Norwegians fired teargas, rubber bullets and warning shots while NATO F-16 jets flew over Maymana in a show of force.

who would have thought that a bunch of cartoons would have triggered all this.

assasination of the Iranian president by Mossad - well, yeah, i could understand the reaction.

but cartoons?

OT,
El Cid, Friends from JW/DW,
You might find this interesting - the Polish daily "Reczpospolita" printed 2 of those cartoons on Saturday. The Polish Muslim Council not later than yesterday was threatening to take the paper to court (where are my peaceful polonized Polish Tatars gone? With the wind of Saudi Arabia, where they go to train themselves to be good Muslims!) unless the chief editor apologizes on the front page of his paper every day for a week in BIG BOLD letters! What cheeks! In fact he did apologize verbally, but only for "hurting" the feelings of the Muslims, but stating that he would do the same again and that his intention was Solidarity with Denmark, in other words he did it the JPost's dignified manner. Today the Polish Muslims started retreating - there was so much pressure on the government and media, people sighing petitions in defence of the newspaper etc. The editor was being pressurized to resign (by the co-op owning the paper), but he declared that he has no intention of doing so!

Winston Churchill

"How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog,

there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property - either as a child, a wife, or a concubine - must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men."

"Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities. Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers of the Queen: all know how to die. But the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science - the science against which it had vainly struggled - the civilization of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilization of ancient Rome."

"Be nice to the crocodile and he will eat you last".

we need more cartoon, make angry mo implode!
