I'm all for self-determination. If Waziristan declares its independence from Pakistan the United States should be the first to recognize its sovereignty. Since Waziristan would be the ideological heir to the defunct Taliban regime, we can help them celebrate their new independence with a spectacular nationwide fireworks display, compliments of the United States Air Force.
As the Palestinians are finding out in Gaza, statehood and membership in the community of nations has its responsibilities, and consequences when those responsibilities are neglected. Launching military attacks across borders with neighbors is frowned upon by the international community and there are a number of universally accepted methods for discouraging such behavior. These would include strongly worded letters, referrals to the UN Security Council, and total and utter annihilation. The belligerents get to choose how far they want to go down that road.

What Miiiiister DefenderOfIslam fails to understand is that the USA would consider the effective declaration of an Islamic State in Waziristan to be carte blanche for operations against that state. It would be made clear to the rulers of that area that they could not expect to be beneficiaries of Pakistani sovereignty under those conditions and that they would suffer as a result. We have the technology to make life very difficult for folk in that area and movement with anything other than light weapons impossible.
Your fantasies of heavy artillery and armo(u)r in tribal hands are a sad joke. Such items would last
no longer than a few minutes if push came to shove. Any attempt to mass troops against US incursions would be spotted and dealt with by remote control. Mohammed Kharbhomb and his jumpin' jihadi friends would find it very difficult to operate in rural areas simply because of a lack of cover.
Pakistan might, under optimum conditions, be able to deliver a nuke on a base in Afghanistan but you have to ask yourself what the American response would be. Musharraf knows this even if the primitives upstate do not and I very much doubt he'd be threatening the US. He also has to worry about his neighbour to the East. How would New Delhi react to his use of a nuclear weapon. I'm thinking they would be a little upset.
Bottom line, Al-Qaeda can say whatever they like, making it stick is another thing entirely. This is nothing more than a desperate attempt by Al-Qaeda to provide themselves with the "base" their politico-religious program demands. They may live to regret it but not for long.
