The Hillsborough County Board of Education initially made the dhimmi move of cancelling all religious holidays rather than add Muslim ones. Now the Baltimore Board is taking the more sensible line that there simply aren't enough Muslim students to justify these holidays. In this day and age, with pusillanimity and political correctness the reigning responses to such demands, this is a courageous stand. The Baltimore County Board of Education is expected tonight to reject calls from a Muslim group to add two Islamic holidays to the proposed 2006-07 school calendar.The board is expected to adopt the recommendations of a subcommittee that found countywide attendance does not drop enough on Muslim holidays to justify closures. Instead, the subcommittee recommends that the district note the holidays on the calendar and teach students about their significance.
Muslims across the nation are pushing for public school closings on Islamic holy days, succeeding in Dearborn, Mich., and in four jurisdictions in New Jersey -- a handful of districts that are the exceptions to the rule.
School officials in Hillsborough County, Fla., ran afoul of practically every religious sect in October when they canceled days off for three Jewish and Christian holidays rather than close for any Muslim holidays.
Public outcry forced school board members to reverse their decision on the Jewish and Christian holidays, and the district remains open on Muslim holidays.
A tiny minority of students and their parents should not run the agenda for any school system. This has been the point of the beginning. It is only logical to include Muslim holidays in systems where Muslims are in great numbers, otherwise this practice will be seen in the eyes of non-Muslims as an unnecessary accommodation to Islam.
This seems like a sensible decision. However, the recommendation to "note the holidays and teach students their significance" troubles me. I foresee two days in the school calendar being taken over by Muslim speakers who will take the opportunity to cross the line and evangelize, similar to what is done in some California districts. Children in the Baltimore system will be fasting, reciting the Koran, and the girls will be taught how to properly arrange and wear a hijab. I hope that there are very alert parents in that district who will be watching those Islamic holidays very closely. It could still work in favor of the Muslims.
If the school board does a little homework on Mo, I believe they would not teach students about the significance of their holidays.
But in the general course of history classes, in context of the crusades, Mo's bloodthirsty history should be deeply examined.
Muslims should never be given special treatment. Our children shouldn't be exposed to their "delusisions of granduer". No prayer rooms. No halal food. Nothing. If they don't want to assimilate and be loyal to OUR way of life, they need to pack their bags and go home.
We cannot have a holiday for every religion. With a country like ours, the whole school year will be holidays. That's why you have the holidays for major religions only.
I worship the sun, being in southern California, I want every sunny day off to worship.
So, once the Muslim student population in a school system reaches greater numbers, then it is OK to start adding Islamic holidays to the calendar (& closing the schools)? Logically speaking, I guess so.

As a jew this shit just infuritates the shit out of me. There are currently more Jews in the US than muslims and you dont see Jews breaking down the doors to public school systems looking for school vacation for Jewish high holidays. Jewish private schools do this, not public. But Muslims want their special treatment...

While pundits and politicians continue to talk about the 'debate within Islam between "moderates" and "extremists"', the Islamic Jihad just chugs along -- like the little engine that could... Pushing -- pushing -- until the putsching begins -- does anyone doubt it?
I can see no evidence that there's anything approaching a "debate" between "moderates" and "extremists" in Islam. We non-Muslims are the only ones who are having concessions demanded of us -- demands to alter our ways, our institutions, our very thoughts in order to accommodate Islam -- not the other way around. And woe betide anyone who dares to mention the obvious links between Muslims and terrorism. We are labelled with the worst condemnations from the Muslims and their apologists in the West -- we are called "bigots", "racists", "Islamophobes", and "ignorant". These accusations too have become weapons in the Muslim arsenal against us...
How sickening that Muslims display the worst bigotry, racism, intolerance, ignorance, barbarity, and stupidity in the world today. Yet anyone who raises the slightest doubt or anxiety about the role of Islam and the presence of Islam in America is chastised as bigoted, racist, intolerant, ignorant etc.
How many times have we seen that noxious Muslim finger wagging at us on the TV set? The Muslim immigrant lecturing us on our intolerance, our misundertanding of Islam, the demand that we must change our attitudes, our foreign policy
I simply ask: Why do we continue to tolerate this enemy in our midst, while they plot and scheme to destroy our way of life, our system of government, our public institutions, even our very existence?

You are wrong. In public school systems with lots of Jewish students and Jewish teachers, major Jewish holidays were school holidays
I saw this in NYC years ago. Is it still going on?
Why do we sit back and allow all these muslims to take over our country?

In college, we also took off for Rastafarian holidays, as this appeared to be the dominant belief according to the number of practitioners of its sacred rites.
I always thought the usa was a judeo-christian country - did I miss something?
