Osama bin Laden promised never to be captured alive and declared the U.S. had resorted to the same "repressive" tactics used by Saddam Hussein, according to an audiotape purportedly by the al-Qaida leader that was posted Monday on a militant Web site.
The tape appeared to be a complete version of one that was first broadcast Jan. 19 on Al-Jazeera, the pan-Arab satellite channel, in which bin Laden offered the United States a long-term truce but also said his al-Qaida terror network would soon launch a fresh attack on American soil.
"I have sworn to only live free. Even if I find bitter the taste of death, I don't want to die humiliated or deceived," bin Laden said.

He was, and is, a vainglorious and holier-than-thou man, and certainly the worst president in American history. As for his sense of morality, he always had a soft spot for Arafat, and his biographer Douglas Brinkley has revealed that Carter volunteered public-relations advice to Arafat, so deeply enamored was he of the "Palestinian" cause. Did I forget to mention that strain of antisemitism that Carter so obviously exhibits?

Hugh, Carter is indeed guilty of this. Let me say at the outset that I am not a Carter apologist - I too think he was not a very good president - but when we lay blame, shouldn't we spread the wealth so to speak? Carter was an idealist, and in a handful of ways, highly enlightened. Unfortantely, he was deeply naive and foolish. Again, I am not here to defend him, but the man did have a few qualities.
How many other Christians also fell into the same trap? Let us not forget that during the cold war, the US encouraged Moslems to oppose the atheistic communist model. Opposing atheistic communism was the highest goal and any religion was deemed to be better than none. At that time, resurgent Islam was never seriously considered as a real potent threat. As I am sure you know, this went on for decades. Thus to be fair, Carter was far from alone in that "good" religiosity theory. Even the Iranian revolution seemed to be a nationalistic aberration at that time, and it was deemed to be highly unlikely to spread; easy to contain. I would venture to say Reagan himself was seduced by the lets-oppose-Russia-with-Islam theory. After all, Reagan used Islam to fan the flames against the soviets in Afghanistan. Let's be fair.

OK, I am no fan of OBL. He has been one of the largest obsticles to the muslim "settling well" in the West. His strategy does not make that much sense to me...there are far smarter ways of doing things...like doing nothing.
Killing Infidels does not do much for the wuslim, so I am against that (and any type of violence, no matter what the provocation....read cartoons).
I can understand his lack of martydom drive though,... being possibly the most famous muslim of modern times ...he wouldn't get 50 miles from his cave before being recognised....hence his "efforts" would be wasted...so he doesn't bother.
And ofcourse being a proud muslim he won't wear a burka to hide (his walking stick and machine gun would give him away anyway).

Good point. Everything we've heard from him of late could've been prepared long ago - there could be a tape somewhere gloating over an attack on the South Pole - just in case.
