QALAT, Afghanistan - Police killed four people Wednesday as Afghans enraged over drawings of the Prophet Muhammad marched on a U.S. military base in a volatile southern province, directing their anger not against Europe but America.The U.S. base was targeted because the United States "is the leader of Europe and the leading infidel in the world," said Sher Mohammed, a 40-year-old farmer who suffered a gunshot wound while taking part in the demonstration in the city of Qalat.
"They are all the enemy of Islam. They are occupiers in our country and must be driven out," Mohammed said.
Wednesday's violence began when hundreds of protesters tried to storm the U.S. base, said Ghulam Nabi Malakhail, a provincial police chief. When warning shots failed to deter them, police shot into the crowd, killing four and wounding 11, he said.
Flying rocks injured eight police and one Afghan soldier, he said....
Wednesday's riot erupted despite an appeal from Afghanistan's top Islamic organization, the Ulama Council, for an end to the violence.
"Islam says it's all right to demonstrate but not to resort to violence. This must stop," senior cleric Mohammed Usman told The Associated Press. "We condemn the cartoons but this does not justify violence. These rioters are defaming the name of Islam."
Once again, the appeal is to the harm they are causing to Islam, not to harm they are causing to others.
In France, President Jacques Chirac asked media to avoid offending religious beliefs as another French newspaper reprinted the caricatures. The satirical French weekly Charlie-Hebdo also printed a new drawing under the headline "Muhammad Overwhelmed by the Fundamentalists" that showed the prophet with his head in his hands, remarking, "It's hard to be loved by idiots."

My bet is that "Hatshepsut" is some dopey Muslim convert, from the west. The United Nations and European Union have reached agreement to issue a joint statement condemning cartoon "insults to Islam" that were first published in a Danish newspaper and have been widely reprinted recently, resulting in a rash of violence throughout the Muslim world.
According to a report in WAM, the United Arab Emirates news agency, the agreement is the work of Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, secretary general of the Organization of Islamic Conference.
The agreement, according to Ihsanoglu, will mean a formal rebuke by the U.N. and EU of the Danish paper Jyllands-Posten for publishing the offensive cartoons.
The statement, he added, stresses that divine religions and religious symbols must be respected, and that freedom of speech must not be taken so far as to desecrate religions.
"The statement also calls for renouncing all forms of violence," he said, according to WAM.
The controversy began just over a week ago, though the cartoons were first published by the Danish newspaper in September. More recently, other papers and news agencies picked up and published the cartoons, and the result has been unprecedented rioting throughout the Islamic world.
In Afghanistan, the death toll reached at least nine when four more demonstrators were killed in the southern city of Qalat. Army Gen. Abdul Razaq said four people were killed in the latest unrest.
In the Palestinian Authority, the international observer presence in the southern West Bank city of Hebron evacuated all its 71 staff members to Israel after hundreds of Palestinian youths attacked its offices, throwing stones, breaking windows and damaging cars.
Several youths managed to enter the headquarters, causing some damage. Palestinian security forces guarding the headquarters had to call in reinforcements before they were able to disperse the crowd.
In Iran, Muslim demonstrators gathered in front of the British embassy in downtown Tehran. Demonstrators hurled stones at the embassy building, but a large number of police and anti-riot forces appeared to have the situation under control.
One of our Muslim contributors above has tried to perpetuate a myth frequently advanced by his co-religionists that Muhammad was nothing but forgiving and magnanimous as he rode victoriously into Mecca. But Islam's own scripture tells otherwise.
To forever debunk the myth that "Allah's Apostle" shed not a drop of blood when he conquered Mecca, we see here how he ordered the murder of a detractor who had taken refuge in a house of worship.

So the US will forgive Afhanistan's debt in return.

KABUL (Reuters) - Afghanistan welcomed on Wednesday a decision by the United States to cancel all debts owed to it by Kabul, saying the move would be a boost as the country strives gets back on its feet after decades of war.
The cancellation of Afghanistan's debt to the United States, which amounts to about $108 million, would be done via normal Paris Club procedures, a U.S. State Department spokesman said in Washington on Tuesday.
"We think it's a good step for Afghanistan," said Khaleeq Ahmad, a spokesman for President Hamid Karzai.
"Writing off any debt is a help in a country after 30 years of war and devastation. We're staring from nothing, like a baby taking its first steps," he said.
The U.S. spokesman, Sean McCormack, said the United States called on other bilateral creditors of Afghanistan to provide the same 100 percent relief, adding that Russia, Germany and other members of the Paris Club of creditor nations intended to do so.
He said such a move would boost Afghanistan's trade, investment and other economic ties with its major creditors.

The United States has formally forgiven one- billion dollars worth of loans to Pakistan, a reward for Pakistan's cooperation in the global war against terrorism..
The US ambassador in Islamabad, Nancy Powell, and senior Pakistani officials signed a formal agreement on Saturday, writing off one-billion dollars in Pakistani debt. The relief represents nearly one-third of what Pakistan owes to the United States.
Speaking to reporters after the signing, Ambassador Powell said the decision to cancel the debt was made during President Pervez Musharraf's visit last year to Washington:
"Today's signing represents a promise kept and another milestone in our expanding partnership. I want to stress that this forgiveness of one-billion dollars in official debt is just one piece of a multi-faceted, multi-billion dollar assistance package the US is providing to Pakistan."
Ms. Powell says the debt relief is a sign of renewed friendship between the two countries:
"The new relationship between the United States and Pakistan is not just about September 11th (2001). It is about the rebirth of a long term partnership between our countries. "
Relations between Pakistan and the United States were strained before the September 11th (2001) terrorist attacks in New York and Washington. This was mainly due to Pakistan's strong support for the Taleban government in neighboring Afghanistan, which was harboring Osama bin Laden and his al-Qaida terrorist network.
Relations between Islamabad and Washington improved after Pakistan abandoned the Taleban and decided instead to back the US led effort to rid Afghanistan of both the Taleban and the al-Qaida bases.
Officials here say the United States has given three-billion dollars in aid to Pakistan since the war on terrorism was launched 18 months ago.
So the US will have to bring in more immigrants to make up for the money it gives away. No one the people in the US are worried about senior security. And infrastructer falling apart. And health care.
And the British gov't is doing the same. Look it up.

The Danish government took its controversial crackdown on immigration one step further on Wednesday, presenting a bill that would strip children born of foreigners in Denmark of their right to automatic citizenship.
The proposal, which will likely be adopted by parliament, is the latest in a large number of restrictive immigration measures introduced by the government of Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen since it came to power in November 2001.
Among the measures already adopted are delaying refugees' eligibility for permanent residence permits from three years to seven, and restricting the asylum conditions for conscientious objectors and persecuted homosexuals.
It has also become more difficult for individual refugees and immigrants to be followed by their spouses, and spouses who come from abroad are deported if they divorce within seven years of their marriage.
The Danish prime minister, whose Liberal party governs in a minority coalition with the Conservatives, was elected on promises to curb immigration in order to improve the integration of those refugees and immigrants already in the country.
The minority government relies heavily on the informal support in parliament of the far-right Danish People's Party (DPP) in order to pass legislation.
As a result, the DPP, the third-largest party in the country, has heavily influenced the government's immigration policy - and some would say tarnished the country's longstanding image as a tolerant society and staunch defender of human rights.
Despite international criticism from humanitarian organisations, the European Union and others, Copenhagen has pursued its policies with one goal in mind: drastically reducing the number of immigrants.

The number of asylum seekers, which hit a record high of 14,347 in 1993 under the Social Democratic government, dropped to 8385 in 2001, 6660 in 2002 and about 3500 in 2003, according to the ministry's statistics.
Despite the dramatic drop - harshly criticised by neighbouring Sweden and Norway who have during the same period seen an increase in the number of asylum seekers - the head of the far-right DPP, Pia Kjaersgaard, called for a complete halt to immigration in a New Year's address.
She said that was "the only solution to prevent the country from turning into a ghetto, as is the case in France, Germany or England."
Kjaersgaard said her party would "spare no effort" to make sure Denmark did not experience the same "frightening developments" as in those countries.
Naturalisation process
The DPP is behind the new bill proposed on Wednesday, under which Danish-born foreigners will have to present a fully-fledged naturalisation application, like any other immigrant, to be examined on a case-by-case basis.
Currently all foreigners born on Danish soil receive citizenship automatically if they request it between the ages of 18 and 23, so long as they do not have a criminal record.
"Danish nationality is not a right. And to award it automatically is unconstitutional," DPP spokesman Jesper Langballe told AFP.
The draft law also allows for the possibility of stripping naturalised immigrants of Danish citizenship if they commit serious crimes "against society" or acts that "threaten the independence or security of the state".

Let us not forget the violence in christian writings. The old testament is chock full of murdering of innocent men women and children (and animals!) yet christianity has managed to escape such activity (yes i am aware of the new covenant that jesus brought and all that). If we really think about it, chrisitians only stopped killing for religion a couple of hundred years ago and mainly due to the advent of a separation between church and state, the rise of new ideas, etc... I post this to pose the question:
Is it conceivable that such a thing could happen in islam? Granted, the concept of a separation of church and state does not exist in islam but religions change and evolve (consider the diversity amongst christian groups even shortly after the time of jesus which persists to this day.) Yes the word of god may be timeless but what people do with it changes.

The DPP seems to be a more rational party than the BNP and LePen's NF. They could be a good template for what European parties should be like. Anybody know whether their hostility is properly focused like a laser on Mohammedans, or is it more dispersed than it should be?

And what Christian 'written' violence are you refering to? There has been violence in the world since day one. Are you talking about a record of some event, or are you talking about Christian instructions to be violent? There is no doubt that some people who call themselves 'Christian', indulge in violent behavior. This is not 'because' of Christianity, but in 'spite' of it. 'Christianity' does not call for it, and in fact discourages it. Christianity calls for love of God, of each other, and of ourselves. The essence of Christianity is enshrined in these two ideas.

Hi fatnun, just for the record Christianitys darkest days were worst during the time when the average person was not allowed to read the scriptures, only the clergy. Due to this the average person was more swayed by superstition etc , the inquisitions also you will find were worst when carried out by secular authorities with nationalistic interests, and the majority of the victims were Christians who challenged the corruption of the Church at the time. The reformation is a topic you would do well to look up. On the topic of old testament the bloodletting you refer to was a matter of mere survival of the hebrew at the time who had to kill or be killed, i recommended you revisit those chapters, and also with the crusades, Jerusalem was Christian once and under the threat of jihad (moslem expansion) the residents called for the Christians in Europe to help defend their very lives (NB: in a macro sense ofcourse, in general the crusades were of good will, but on a micro level ofcourse the integrity of every knight and noble was not always virtuous). Today the Christians in jerusalem and palestine need our help to get out of a place which is still to this day hostile to them. Spain+Greece would be a country akin to Iran or Saudi Arabia today had not the Christians took a stand and pushed back the tide of Islam. There are a lot of misconceptions out there about a history which is evident for any who wishes to search, and doctrine that opposes or incites violence.

Safety fear as journal axes cartoon

A British magazine will not publish a controversial cartoon of prophet Muhammad, after police said they could not guarantee protection for its staff if it went ahead, the editor said.
The Liberal magazine was intending to publish one of the 12 Danish cartoons which have caused global uproar - alongside a statement on free speech.
But the statement now appears on the magazine's website next to a blank picture box with the word "censored" written across it.
Readers are invited to view a link to the controversial cartoon, which shows a cartoonist hunched over a sketch of an Arab, sweating profusely.
It is left ambiguous as to whether this stress is caused by the light he is sitting under or the fact he is tackling a controversial subject by drawing an Arab figure.
Editor Ben Ramm said "for reasons of safety", the cartoon had been pulled from the magazine's printed edition, due out next week.
He said: "The magazine was informed on the evening of Wednesday February 8 by senior officers at Scotland Yard that the editor and his staff could not be guaranteed police protection in the event of publication.
"Despite our wishes and convictions, for reasons of safety the magazine will no longer carry the cartoon itself."
Mr Ramm said the magazine, originally set up in 1822 to challenge restrictions on free speech, would continue to explore the furore surrounding the cartoons.
"Why, when we have been assured that the recent violent statements of demonstrators represent the opinions of only a small minority, have these extremists been able to effectively censor the press through threat and intimidation?" he said.

You're correct. When the Church in Rome was tightly intertwined with government, a lot of violence occurred. The advent of Protestantism and the unraveling of church and state ended that. However, that took hundreds of years. I too believe that is what is going to have to happen inside Islam but I wonder if we have the time.

Islam does mean peace....when peace is defined as the complete absence of dissent or disbelief.
Maybe we need a rise of church power again considering that the state/s in the west no longer have clear vision on ethical issues (gospel/health care/food provision to the impoverished) and the west having lost its way to the point where the freedoms for which the faithful have died are being given up for the cheap price of fear. Where is the leadership in the church or the state.
