What Infidel governments cannot understand, and what confuses them, is that from the viewpoint of Muslims, it is right and natural, that Infidels should give them aid. It does not seem to them to be illogical to provide aid to those whose stated purpoose is to destroy you. Thus the outrage is genuine, not feigned, by Hamas officials, at the proposal of the Israeli government not to continue to hand over certain sums that the Israelis receive in taxes that they carefully collect, account for to the last penny, and then for some crazy reason have thought they should turn over to those who wish them ill, whether of Fatah or Hamas. It makes no sense. Could one see the American government, in 1943, turning over large sums, however collected, to the government of Adolf Hitler or Admiral Tojo?
But Israel's behavior has established a pattern, when it might have taken a different attitude. What explains the Western world, which does not consist of a single small state under siege, but that might have calmly analyzed rather than ignored the nature of Islam (as for so long the Israelis have) which would certainly have lead to a different immigration policy in the past, and would certainly have lead to less support -- those gigantic sums called foreign aid to Muslim countries, and the enormous amounts spent internally on Muslim immigrants many of whom do not work, many of whom turn to crime, and others of whom receive their handouts, as Bruce Bawer has described it, from Western governments, back in "Little Norway" (as one part of a Pakistani city is called) in Pakistan, or in Morocco -- on Western welfare, but living (and making that money go still farther) somewhere back in Dar al-Islam.
Hamas, and Fatah for that matter, and all other Muslims now receiving Western aid at the very time when the largest transfer of wealth, from oil-consuming Western nations to the oil-producing (or, more accurately, oil-possessing) Muslim nations) continues at an ever-more furious pace, need to be disabused of their ideas of what the Western world owes them. It owes them nothing.
Nor do Western taxpayers owe the Muslim milliions who have come to live among them, who do not share, to the extent that they are adherents of the tenets of Islam, a felt loyalty to the Infidel nation-state (how could they, given what Islam tells them to believe, which is to offer their loyalty only to Islam and to fellow members of the umma al-islamiyya), and who are now so expensive to monitor, given the obvious security risks, and so distressing in the way they challenge, at every step, so many Western laws, customs, manners, not merely the tangential but the central ones, including --a s we have seen -- the right to practice the freedom of speech that everywhere in the Western world is guaranteed.
