CAIRO - Former German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder Saturday criticized the publication of cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammed by several European newspapers.In an address to an international audience at the Jeddah Economic Forum, Schroeder called the publication "a major mistake" and "we should return now to a reasonable and acceptable way to respect sanctities and beliefs".
He added: "I share with Muslims around the world the anger over the offensive cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed, and we should turn to tolerance and respect of cultures and religions."
What can you expect from the Germans - especially from the war generation that Schroeder belongs - they are still shouldering the guilt that comes with starting a war that killed 50 million - dont look to the Germans for saviour from the Islamic threat!

Germans have never and are not shouldering the guilt, - this was always a PR mythos that they spread. Schröders words should be seen in a completely different light. In the past and now Germans always had strong admiration for the Muslim world , since it corresponds so nicely with their own authoritarian, antisemitic and antiamerican traditions. Today Germany shows great understanding and support for the Moslem world (it is in no way a coincidence that the 9/11 terrorist were based for years and years in Germany) in order to affront the USA and to thwart all the efforts that USA is doing in the Middle East. Exactly when Germany would badly have needed labor market reforms, Schröder and the trade unions were there blocking all the efforts to reform. Had Angela Merkel won with clear mariginal, thing could be a bit better. Compartively speaking, of course - Merkel is almost as dhimmi as are Germans in general. In German elections, you did get a chilling reminder of things to come: at certain point, Merkel gave some signs of not wanting Turkey to be member of EU. The turks had a get-out-the-vote campain for Social Democrats, and Merkels clear victory shrank to a practical tie.

Germany labors under a cloud of shame which, when mixed with the multiculturalist propaganda of the EU and the general moral relativism of the times, renders them impotent to defend the West. They do not know what they would be defending in the first place. Ditto for the once proud Vikings. The so-called primitive states of eastern Europe, the ones who only yesterday saw tyranny, illiberalism and a foreign yoke, present a more vigorous intellectual climate and clarity of purpose than the tired societies on the west. Schroder, Gore, Clinton and Straw have convinced me - in a way have radicalized me - that the Left is now a genuine danger to us all. In a world-historic moment, we cannot risk the weak-kneed projects of the Left. I was never a full-blown Tory or Republican, much less a NF supporter. But whatever the flaws of Bush and Co. (and there are many), they pale when compared to what the Left would have us do.

When making a speech overseas, they don't even consider loyalty to the home country, its heritage, its culture, its laws. Just as for the Islamists, national borders and national identities mean nothing to these people, except for cynical appeals to same for political advantage at election time.

To the Courageous Men and Women of the 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment, who have changed the city of Tall’ Afar from a ghost town, in which terrorists spread death and destruction, to a secure city flourishing with life.
To the lion-hearts who liberated our city from the grasp of terrorists who were beheading men, women and children in the streets for many months.
To those who spread smiles on the faces of our children, and gave us restored hope, through their personal sacrifice and brave fighting, and gave new life to the city after hopelessness darkened our days, and stole our confidence in our ability to reestablish our city.
Our city was the main base of operations for Abu Mousab Al Zarqawi. The city was completely held hostage in the hands of his henchmen. Our schools, governmental services, businesses and offices were closed. Our streets were silent, and no one dared to walk them. Our people were barricaded in their homes out of fear; death awaited them around every corner. Terrorists occupied and controlled the only hospital in the city. Their savagery reached such a level that they stuffed the corpses of children with explosives and tossed them into the streets in order to kill grieving parents attempting to retrieve the bodies of their young. This was the situation of our city until God prepared and delivered unto them the courageous soldiers of the 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment, who liberated this city, ridding it of Zarqawi’s followers after harsh fighting, killing many terrorists, and forcing the remaining butchers to flee the city like rats to the surrounding areas, where the bravery of other 3d ACR soldiers in Sinjar, Rabiah, Zumar and Avgani finally destroyed them.
I have met many soldiers of the 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment; they are not only courageous men and women, but avenging angels sent by The God Himself to fight the evil of terrorism.
The leaders of this Regiment; COL McMaster, COL Armstrong, LTC Hickey, LTC Gibson, and LTC Reilly embody courage, strength, vision and wisdom. Officers and soldiers alike bristle with the confidence and character of knights in a bygone era. The mission they have accomplished, by means of a unique military operation, stands among the finest military feats to date in Operation Iraqi Freedom, and truly deserves to be studied in military science. This military operation was clean, with little collateral damage, despite the ferocity of the enemy. With the skill and precision of surgeons they dealt with the terrorist cancers in the city without causing unnecessary damage.
God bless this brave Regiment; God bless the families who dedicated these brave men and women. From the bottom of our hearts we thank the families. They have given us something we will never forget. To the families of those who have given their holy blood for our land, we all bow to you in reverence and to the souls of your loved ones. Their sacrifice was not in vain. They are not dead, but alive, and their souls hovering around us every second of every minute. They will never be forgotten for giving their precious lives. The comment by the Mayor of Tel Afar is touching and heartening. We all know what good things the soldiers are doing, and trying to do, and it is nice that occasionally some Iraqi recognizes it. But that does not mean that sentiment, feelings of good will expressed by some (there will always be some) should be taken as permanent, or even as always and everywhere completley heartfelt (in this case, I suspect it is). Even the translation, which offers a prose stripped of allusion and of the elaborate rhetorical flourishes one would have expected, suggests that the text has gained (perhaps by losing) in translation, quite possibly by someone possessing a native command of both languages, such as an Iraqi-American who had spent decades in the United States.
It is dangerous to take this kind of thing, and overlook other things. Was Tel Afar in Arab or in Kurdish hands, given its location -- and is the mayor Arab or Kurdish? If he is Kurdish, the gratitude is much more likely to be permanent. In the latest poll, 88% of the Sunni Arabs say they support attacks on American soldiers. If the mayor is a Sunni Arab, one wonders if he is still so supportive of the Americans, and if he is, that would make him part of the 12% who, while perhaps disliking the Americans, at least do not support attempts to murder them.
Sentiment can be heartwarming.
And it can also deceive.
What counts are American interests. American lives, American money, American materiel, American interest and attention, American hopes, American plans and schemes to stop the world-wide Jihad in all its expressions and using all of its instruments, has to be carefully husbanded, not squandered.
It cannot be spent merely because one is touched by a letter. That is the Bush approach -- to give us the sight of a dead Marine's parents embracing some very nice, pro-American woman from Iraq. A photo opportunity. Sentimentality replacing thought.
What if that Iraqi woman embraced that dead Marine's parents, and wished them well, and was grateful to the United States? Is she representative? How many Iraqis think the way she does? And even if there were more than a few who did not, ultimately, wish the Americans out and exhibited no signs of permanent unfeigned gratitude, that still should not change the need to analyze carefully what it is the United States needs to do with the resources it possesses. Those resources, and the political will to use them for the necessary purposes, are finite.
They need to be allocated correctly, not misallocated.
They need to be husbanded, not squandered.
Thrift, thrift, you Horatios at your bridges. Bridges over the Tigris. Over the Euphrates. And soon enough, over the Seine and the Tiber and the Thames and the Potomac.

I agree with the need to be cautious and not deceived. However, the letter confirms what I have heard from many individual marines and soldiers as they return from their Iraq duty. Many reported that they have been personally thanked by ordinary Iraqis, given gifts, etc..
Also, the large number of Iraqis who have voted, dipping their fingers in ink as they did so, brought their children along and dipped those little non-voting fingers in the ink, too. They have marked themselves, and their children, as supporters - at least for the voting process which we Americans have brought to them.

How do we neutralize the devious deceptions and fantastic flatteries which the Muslims fobbed off at their various penthouse parties, on their private jets, in their fabulous spas and casinos, at their "getaways" in far off lands, on their innumerable golf junkets, their safaris and mountain climbs, -- and don't forget that fantastic scuba dive off the Maldives in that fabulous 350 foot "royal" yacht!
