A breath of fresh air from Jordan. "Mohammed Cartoon Conflict Gets Even Hotter," from Deutsche Welle, with thanks to Mac:
Meanwhile, a Jordanian gossip tabloid on defiantly published three of the cartoons that have triggered outrage in the Arab and Muslim world."Muslims of the world, be reasonable," said the editor-in-chief of the weekly independent newspaper Al-Shihan in an editorial alongside the cartoons, including the one showing the Muslim religion's founder wearing a bomb-shaped turban.
"What brings more prejudice against Islam, these caricatures or pictures of a hostage-taker slashing the throat of his victim in front of the cameras or a suicide bomber who blows himself up during a wedding ceremony in Amman?" wrote Jihad Momani.
Bravo, Momani!
Holy toledo Batman! A real moderate Muslim!!
Holy crap!! You KNOW there's going to be a fatwa issued against this guy! He's brave but he'd better run for cover!
שלום
That guy deserves a medal for bravery. Its one thing to print these things when you live in a western country where there is at least a theoretical possibility that the police can protect you from the radical nutcases. But when you live in one of the countries where the nutcases have their powerbase, it something else entirely.
With any luck this will turn into an internal muslim fight soon, between moderates and fanatics. Lets hope the moderates win, although its a weak hope.
The most intelligent Muslims know what damage the brouhaha is doing to them. And that is why out of a billion Muslims, possibly as many as several dozen, or even a hundred, will manage to express their doubts about the wisdom, from the perspective of promoting or defending Islam, to the vast, hysterical campaign now being waged by Muslims.
It would be fascinating to ask the smooth smiling propagandist for the Muslim Brotherhood, Tariq Ramadan (let's agree to trust Magdi Allam on the matter of Ramadan, shall we, and not Diane Eck, the rustic who came to the big city from Montana, did everything right, from writing about third-world Benares, to being for "pluralism" with all those grant-getting possiblitites, to being fashionably married to her partner, a wedding at which, among the vocal wellwishers, was Karen Armstrong -- such are the dizzying heights to which a cowgirl, not getting the blues, can succeed in what passes for the world of High Scholarship today) what he thinks of the cartoons published by Jullends-Posten. It would be fun to hear the smooth hem, and then the even smoother haw.
Never say never!
BBC has just shown the cartoons.
I love that guy's name:
Imagine if he was your friend:
OIC has referred the matter to the UN
ttp://www.zaman.com/?bl=international&alt=&trh=20060202&hn=29317
The ambassadors of the OIC member countries to Geneva, and also the members of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, were called to attend a meeting Wednesday.
The problem will definitely be referred to the United Nations, said Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, the OIC Secretary-General.
oops -barfed the link.
here it is

Hey, ExpatriateDK,
When and where has al BBCra shown the cartoons (it wasn't on the radio was it??)
A fatwa has been issued by a Kuwaiti cleric, calling for the death of the 12 cartoonists... While other clerics condemned the fatwa, stating that the fatwa shouldn't be followed, a group affiliated with al-qaeda "finally" expressed its intent to attack Denmark.
I'm SHOCKED AND SILENCED!!! But it's only temporary.
Is this guy really Muslim? And is he still alive? I'm not being funny. Mr. Momani has taken a big risk here. I'm now worried about him. This took great courage on his part and he should be on the lookout for radicals trying to silence him. This is a truely brave man!!!
Archduke,
The article in your link says that the OIC is going to refer this matter to the United Nations. That's a relief. I thought they were going to tell someone who actually gives a damn!
The Moslems better be really careful before they work themselves up into a rabid frenzy. (Remember what America did to Japan.) I don't know what all the other countries think but in the United States, freedom of speech and expression is our most prized possession. We will not give it up, no matter what.
If Mr. Jihad M. reaches his next birthday (or even Easter, depending on which comes first) I'd be amazed.
Best of luck to this courageous guy!
He can find a bulletproof vest on ebay for about $200US. (With side and neck panels an additional $100US.)
May a million caricatures bloom!
"I'm SHOCKED AND SILENCED!!!"
LOL!
I was just thinking, now that this thing has mushroomed into a world debate, can a parody of Mohammad on Saturday Night Live be far behind?
I love it! The more they complain, the more people find out what Islam is all about.
Beautiful!!
Jihad Momani and his newspaper deserve to be honoured for their reason and decency. This could never have been published in Saudi Arabia, Iran, or Pakistan and probably not in Turkey.
Of course Momani has risked his life by publishing the truth. How long till he's forced to "apologize" or face threats against himself and his family from the "real" Muslims?
That independent newspapers like Al-Shihan exist freely in Jordan is also a positive reflection on King Abdullah (especially considering that he has to deal with an Islamist majority in Parliament. Maybe the British education of the Hashemites has paid off in this regard.
I've often wondered what effects it would have had on Islamic militancy if the Western powers had arranged for a Hashemite Caliphate to replace the Ottomans after Ataturk deposed Abdul Mejid II in 1924?
For more on the Turkish historian Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, supposedly one of the most respected Turkish scholars, not one of the wild men -- after Mahathir Mohamed it was thought better to have a more acceptable facade for the OIC -- google "Posted by Hugh" and "Jihad Watch" and "Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu." Note in particular how Ihsanoglu describes to an American audience the treatment of non-Muslims as "protected peoples" under Islam.
And he is the best they could do.
I can see that this man doesn't have long to live...
A courageous man, indeed! Bravo, Momani.
Shihan's editor-in-chief, Jihad al-Momani, told The Associated Press that he decided to run the cartoons to "display to the public the extent of the Danish offense and condemn it in the strongest terms."
"But their publication is not meant in any way to promote such blasphemy," al-Momani added.
This doesn't sound like a brave moderate muslim to me, more like just another muslim trying to exaggerate and enrage the masses to murder.
I have great respect for what this man, Jihad Momain, has said and done.
Uh, "Islam," "musa," now let me ask: Is Mr. Jihad Momain a racist and a hate-monger?
...okay, JanuaryMan, you have just reduced my level of respect for this man. I guess I should only give Momani part marks.
"Islam" and "musa" my question still stands:
Is Momani a racist for writing "Muslims of the world, be reasonable...What brings more prejudice against Islam, these caricatures or pictures of a hostage-taker slashing the throat of his victim in front of the cameras or a suicide bomber who blows himself up during a wedding ceremony in Amman?"
At least this is a point that has been made by many posters on this site.
Isabellathecrusader posted:

Yea, that's funny isn't it? Considering I can't find where the United Nations Commission on Human Rights has even addressed the issue of Nazanin in Iran - I don't think this should go too far. But then again, I'm constantly surprised by the level of dhimmitude they display.

Jordan tabloid pulled after publishing Mohammed cartoons
A Jordanian gossip tabloid was pulled from newsstands after defiantly publishing three cartoons Thursday of Prophet Mohammed that have triggered outrage in the Muslim world, its publishing company said.
"The company decided "to immediately pull all copies from the market" and "open an investigation to identify those responsible for this abominable and reprehensible behavior," the publishers said in a statement.
It also fired editor-in-chief Jihad Jihad Momani."

Certainly such behavior has turned me and many thousands (millions) of Westerners against them.
l will attempt to copy the cartoons and write a letter to the editor of our local paper, and the National Post, and perhaps with latter will have already published the cartoons.. we need to strike at the heart of this cult of death, need to eraes the words of religion of piece! show the masses the lies that have told in the past about islam, and see that those who migrate to western countires, there needs to be assimilation of "Western Values", ie freedom of speech, etc.!!

Outrage Spreads Over Muhammad Caricature
Hi Lulu,
Thanks for the update...but truly this makes me sad.
I am starting to ask the question myself whether there really are more than a handful of moderate people in Islam?
Are we so inflexible that we cannot let our hair down once in a while?
This is a real shame for Islam...Karim where the F**k are U? Why aren't you here speaking for tolerance within Islam?
I'm off to see if even the prophet had a sense of humour?
hey naseem - read up on humanism.
its a start. who knows - maybe you might get so sick of Islam that you might turn atheist.
and i'm telling you - being free of the shackles of religion is a wonderful and free experience.
Hugh, I'm interested in your take on this Jordanian guy--and your point about some Muslims getting it--as it were. I think there are many such Muslims as the Jordanian publisher who had the bravery to publish the satire. For us, it's at worst(hopefully) a slap on the wrist to highlight how absurd the Muslim group think is . . . but for the Jordanian--who knows what he risks? Getting back on track, I think--or hope--there are a lot of Muslims who have 'opted out' of the religion. Allow me to clarify, they have not yet renounced or changed their religion and have some pride--based on their parents ect--but are smart enough to have opted out in their minds. The problem as I see it is the extreme risk they might face for dissent in their own lands--such as Jordan. I trained with a large amount of Muslim men in my internship and, almost to a man, they were very neutral or even admiring towards Israel. They were under no compunction to kiss up to their lowly interns--Jews and Christians. Or perhaps the intelectuals--or those smart enough to have 'mentally opted out of Islam without formal renunciation' simply wish to move to the West and start anew. But I've always pondered on these arab interns--who had never met a Jew--who had only heard propaganda about Jews and Christians--yet were somehow friendly towards Jews. Where they just bs'ing or is it something else. Even if all my surmisings are right, however and the parents ARE moderate and practice ISLAM LIGHT--there is always the risk that the next generation may not be so Muslim Light. One Muslim intern--who had no idea I was Jewish and had no interest in kissing up to me--was on a rotation at Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis. Our professor was Dr. Larry Einhorn, the discoverer of the chemotheraputic combination against testicular cancer. This guy is one of the top researchers AND clinicians in the world in his field. One of the Muslim interns told me how much he admired the work ethic of Dr. Einhorn and how he wanted to be a doctor just like him, AND if his parents ever got sick in Saudi Arabia that he'd call Dr. Einhorn and take his parents to see him. This from a conservative Muslim. I guess on the positive side, while reformation can perhaps not occur, there is a chance for more debate within the Arab world about the right way to go. This, of course, poses another problem: the ramifications to those brave souls who start the debate!
The more they foam at the mouth, rant and rave, the more the world will see them for the rabid dogs they really are.
Biorabbi,
Read my post three up from yours. The Jordanian guy, Momani, has been sacked from his job and the Jordanian government has pulled the newspaper from circulation and is threatening legal action against the publisher Shihan.
So much for Jordanian tolerance and moderation.
How refreshing! Momani "A brave visionary Muslim"
........Too bad the rest of the Muslim world takes Muhammed way too seriously!!
Previously cited from JanuaryMan, above:
"Shihan's editor-in-chief, Jihad al-Momani, told The Associated Press that he decided to run the cartoons to "display to the public the extent of the Danish offense and condemn it in the strongest terms.""
Article from Lisa, posted above:
""...[Muslims,] be reasonable." Hours later, the owners of the weekly, Shihan, said they had fired its editor and withdrawn the issue from sale, and the government threatened legal action."
Unbelievable, yet all too believable.
The negative reaction from so many (though not all) Muslims is indicative of a superficial reading of the cartoons. So superficial, in fact, that it is not accurate to use the phrase "reading the cartoons." Muslims generally are not reacting to what's in the cartoons, and are not taking into account that the cartoonists are expressing ideas, criticism, food for thought as well as entertainment. They're upset in their belief that this whole exercise was a plot hatched by the predominantly white western Kuffar to attack Islam. They would be partly correct. (Of course, they fail to take into account that the kuffar are usually too busy plotting against and attacking the members of their own culture, politicians, etc.--even a couple of the "mohammad" cartoons seem to poke fun at the newspaper, not Mohammad).
However, as with the general Muslim reaction to the film _Submission_, they are again missing what we would call the bigger issues. The bigger issue of _Submission_ was Islamically-approved misogyny in its various forms. The bigger issues with the cartoons were Islamically-approved terrorism and violence, misogyny, and freedom of expression. We are only talking about one of these issues--freedom of expression--not because of what was in the cartoons, but rather, the because of the fact that white crusading Kuffars would dare say something unflattering about the prophet.
All of this comes down to enormous self-importance on the part of the Muslims who are outraged by this. They are so self-important that they cannot see that there are more important issues at stake. Their claim that the prophet should be revered, not maligned, is Islamically correct.* However, this does not absolve Muslims of the individual responsibility to handle this in an ethical fashion. One can only use one's god as an excuse in one's own fantasy-world. Muslims must grow up and take responsibility for their own actions instead of claiming "Mohammad-Allah made me do it."
*On the other hand, I'm still waiting for the army of public-relations Muslim apologists to pull out those peaceful tolerant Meccan verses that we've been hearing so much about, in reference to these cartoons. If those apologists can clip and quote seemingly tolerant verses after terrorist attacks, why not after the publication of the Mohammad cartoons?
Look at the bright side - the editor only got fired, not beheaded. Looks like Jordan is almost as advanced as France (in the latter, Sarkozy joined journalists in rallying around the editorial director of France Soir, who was fired by the newspaper's Egyptian owner, whereas the Jordanian government threatened legal action against Shihan)
Mr Jihad, Peace be upon you.
Last night British TV at last had the guts to show briefly the cartoons and guess what followed – crowds of angry Muslim men were shouting in front of the TV building” “Slay all those who offend our prophet!” and “Islam will rule Britian!” . If this is not incitement to religious violence (punishable by British law) then I am the Emperor of China.
It is the Muslim Anger Day today - brrrr!
I am sure they will be celebrating peacefully as it is RoP, innit?

"Mr Rasmussen has said the issue of the cartoons has gone beyond Denmark to become a clash between Western free speech and Islamic taboos.
"
The time has long passed for Muslims to show their "moderate" side, or for the elusive "moderates" to begin waging ANY kind of campaign against so-called "perverters" of Islam -- the proliferating Muslims terrorists... Where is the rage filled mass demonstration against the defamer of Islam, UBL? Where is the threat to behead the misunderstander of Islam, Zawahri? Where is the outrage at the beheadings on videos of hundreds of hapless Western hostages by Zarqawi?
Although this might be an extremely rare and laudable case of Muslim honesty and self reflection, we have mainly seen an unacceptable lack of candor from Muslims, especially those in Western lands who need not fear the retribution of their less polite Muslim counterparts...
I see few examples of these elusive Muslims pushing back against their so-called "radical" brethren, whom, they maintain, are defaming Islam, misinterpreting Islam, and projecting an inaccurate and malignant image of Islam.
Instead we have witnessed thousands of Muslims speaking and writing in our free media who continue to expend lavish amounts of energy condemning us, and lecturing us non-Muslims about how unjust we are in general towards Muslims... The inference they all seem to endorse is that, we, far more than Muslims, are the genuine cause of Muslim terrorism, and Muslim intolerance. The cartoon insanity is just one more example. Rather than Muslim leadership taking this opportunity to FINALLY confront the intolerant radicals, we find them across the spectrum joining their fascist brethren, and calling for censorship and curtailments of freedom of speech when it touches on the subject of Islam! They are joining their fascist nazi terrorist Muslim friends in solidarity, and assaulting our Western freedoms, placing Islam above our rights and laws.
And, as in past dustups, if we dare to allege links between Islam and terrorism, or observing the backwardness of this preposterous Muslim reaction to the publication of cartoons, we are accused of "racism" and "Islamophobia", and warned of the consequences of driving the elusive "moderates" into isolation, and perhaps through our actions of publishing, driving these elusive "moderates" more towards radicalism. At the very least we are warned that the elusive "moderate" Muslims living in the West will be far less inclined to aid their Western hosts in the war against "Islamic extremism"...
Far from being an acceptable type of comment from the Muslim interlocutors in the West, I consider these comments to be a threat from Muslim spokespersons -- They are saying to us: "Do not "insult" Islam as we define it! If your do, don't be surprised when we react with violence and terrorism!"
I, for one, am sick unto NAUSEOUSNESS listening to threats from Muslims, especially those who have immigrated to my country, very often under the pretense of escaping oppression in Muslim lands -- their motives for arriving here are becoming increasingly suspicious -- not least because they always seem to make common cause with their intolerant Muslim friends in their former lands, and always seem to be in opposition to our efforts to protect ourselves from Muslim terrorists, or simply excercising our freedoms...
"a clash between Western free speech and Islamic taboos"
I'm so glad it's a clash between free Western speech and Islamic taboos, rather than a clash between violent Muslim hatemongers, and innocent Western citizens excercising their rights... The former is bloodless and abstract, whereas the latter would involve nastiness and ugliness...
Thank god the Jihad is only an abstraction, and not a nasty and ugly and bloody thing! Phew -- Ever since 9/11 I've been worried! Now I understand I never should have given the thing a second thought!
Finally -- I wouldn't get too excited about this item from Jordan... Though I haven't seen which cartoons the editor chose to publish, I am certain they were the least "offensive", and out of the 12, there were only a couple that had the slightest sharpness -- most were utterly innocuous...
So here we probably have an attempt to tamp down the hysterical Muslim reaction, not through genuine honestness and full disclosure, but through a partial and therefore inaccurate depiction of what the cartoons actually were saying... Altogether lost in the discussion is the genesis of the entire matter, that is, the fear among Westerners of the Muslim reaction if they illustrated a Western book about Islam -- The cartoons were published in part to lampoon the fact that some Westerners have been terrorized enough by Muslim threats to refuse to illustrate a book for fear that they may then become the targets of Muslim rage, murder, and terrorism...
Now we see that the original illustrators were right to worry about the reaction from the Muslims -- but they were wrong to succumb... And the cartoonists published these cartoons, and are probably now in fear for their lives -- I suspect they never imagined the response would be so insane from the Muslims -- so prehaps they were wrong about their assumptions in publishing these cartoons in protest -- but HOW RIGHT THEY WERE TO EXCERCISE THEIR FREE SPEECH! We must now do everyting we can to express our solidarity with the Jyllands Posten, the Government of Denmark, and MOST OF ALL -- our solidarity with these cartoonists --
They are us.

jsla,
The Jordanian paper published the supposedly most offensive of all, the one that depicts Mohammad as an arab with a Bomb in his Turban.
"The Jordanian paper published the supposedly most offensive of all..."
Nevertheless -- though I acknowledges some rare, small, and sporadic efforts may occur among Muslims to counter the attitudes of their more "extreme" Muslim brethren -- I reiterate my main point:
"I wouldn't get too excited about this item from Jordan."
Until I see number far far FAR exceeding the paltry few which can be cited, of Muslims fighting against their "immoderate" brethren, I am hopeless for "reform" in the sewer of Islam.
Since 9/11 the world has been treated to endless tirades from indignant Muslim spokepersons, venting copious amounts of meaningless steam and blather, attempting to convince us that Islam poses no threat, that we gravely misunderstand their religion, or that the terrorists gravely misunderstand their religion...
They viciously deny that their religion has anything to do with the rampant hatred, intolerance, backwardness, and terrorism which is rife in the Muslim lands, and now becoming rife where Muslims have emmigrated...
Until they begin expending a mere fraction of the energy they do trying to convince US about Islam, and instead aim their energies and efforts against the "misunderstanders" and "perverters" of Islam who carry out atrocities on Islam's behalf -- their words are meaningless, their actions are meaningless -- their thoughts are inconsequential and meaningless -- Except to confuse us, and keep us from understanding the nature of our enemy -- As such, the actions of "moderates" look more to me like disinformation campaigns to keep us guessing, to keep us hoping, while Islam's forces gather strength, gather minions, and gather the weapons with which to destroy us...
And then there's this from the editor of the Jordania paper in question:
"Jihad Momani, the editor sacked for reprinting the cartoons, said his purpose had been merely to demonstrate the extent of the Danish insult to Islam. "Oh, I ask God to forgive me," he wrote in a public letter of apology yesterday...."
Must I say again: I wouldn't get too excited about this item from Jordan.
If that's an example of the "moderate" Muslim in Muslim lands -- the one so many still hold out as the shining light of our times, the one who must be encouraged -- the one who is supposedly going to turn the whole Islamist establishment on its head by exposing the wrongness of violent Jihad... Then we're in for a long, hopeless, dark night of despair...
It's time to STOP PRETENDING... There aren't any Muslims capable of turning the tide, because Islam itself is the tide, and they are simply flotsam in the rising tide of hatred, world supremacy, and world destruction...
ALL Muslims must be expelled from Western lands...
And we must come up with a plan to protect our lives, our freedoms, and our lands from the war which they are waging against us -- whatever that will entail.
I have mixed feelings about Jihad Momani- was he being truthful in the Islamic sense or in the traditional western sense?
Islam is a failed religion, unable to add value to the tribal survivalist mentality of the original Arab wanderers; hence, lying, stealing, cheating, and murder are virtues still.
jsl, you are correct in what you say-Muslims must be evicted from the West. Very accurately stated, that "..Islam is the tide."
In my humble gentile opinion the very first place they needed to be evicted from is eretz Israel, which includes Gaza, Lebanon up to Sidon, and Jordan to the Euphrates.
Islam and its adherents need to stay in their vast Arab lands.
"Islam and its adherents need to stay in their vast Arab lands."
Yes... Perhaps we should begin throwing one of their plays right back in their face... All their obsession with former "Islamic domains" such as Spain, and southern Italy, Sicily, and such -- Let's roll the clock back a couple hundred years more, and demand back Constantinople, Alexandria and Cairo -- Babylon -- Damascas, Jerusalem, ALL of India before partition, etc -- their preposterous recipe of "once under Islam always under Islam" should be turned on its head --
Muslim! -- GET OUT OF EGYPT -- it was formerly nearly 100% Christian and proud and great!
Muslim! -- GET OUT OF SYRIA -- it was formerly nearly 100% Christian and Jewish and mighty and honorable!
Muslim! -- GET OUT OF INDIA -- it was formerly nearly 100% HINDU and BUDDHIST and SIKH and JEWISH (and whatever else...) and it was magnificent!
Muslim! -- GET OUT OF IRAN -- it was formerly nearly 100% Zoroastrian and JEWISH (and whatever else), and it's place was among the first nations of the world!
Muslim! -- GET OUT OF WHATEVER LAND YOU HAVE CORRUPTED AND DESTROYED -- it was formerly nearly 100% non-Muslim -- and as such -- it was FAR FAR BETTER than it is now under your filthy incompetent hate filled rule!
