Nonie Darwish: We were brought up to hate - and we do

Nonie Darwish discusses cartoon rage within the larger context of the state of contemporary Muslim society. From the Telegraph, with thanks to Tom Syseskey:

The controversy regarding the Danish cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed completely misses the point. Of course, the cartoons are offensive to Muslims, but newspaper cartoons do not warrant the burning of buildings and the killing of innocent people. The cartoons did not cause the disease of hate that we are seeing in the Muslim world on our television screens at night - they are only a symptom of a far greater disease.

I was born and raised as a Muslim in Cairo, Egypt and in the Gaza Strip. In the 1950s, my father was sent by Egypt's President, Gamal Abdel Nasser, to head the Egyptian military intelligence in Gaza and the Sinai where he founded the Palestinian Fedayeen, or "armed resistance". They made cross-border attacks into Israel, killing 400 Israelis and wounding more than 900 others.

My father was killed as a result of the Fedayeen operations when I was eight years old. He was hailed by Nasser as a national hero and was considered a shaheed, or martyr. In his speech announcing the nationalisation of the Suez Canal, Nasser vowed that all of Egypt would take revenge for my father's death. My siblings and I were asked by Nasser: "Which one of you will avenge your father's death by killing Jews?" We looked at each other speechless, unable to answer.

In school in Gaza, I learned hate, vengeance and retaliation. Peace was never an option, as it was considered a sign of defeat and weakness. At school we sang songs with verses calling Jews "dogs" (in Arab culture, dogs are considered unclean).

Criticism and questioning were forbidden. When I did either of these, I was told: "Muslims cannot love the enemies of God, and those who do will get no mercy in hell." As a young woman, I visited a Christian friend in Cairo during Friday prayers, and we both heard the verbal attacks on Christians and Jews from the loudspeakers outside the mosque. They said: "May God destroy the infidels and the Jews, the enemies of God. We are not to befriend them or make treaties with them." We heard worshippers respond "Amen".

Read it all.

I remembr one thing, always:
Islam has no mechanism for peaceful dialogue.
And even if it did, it could not be used to have a dialogue with the rest of us.

This article is so valuable and most revealing since it comes from a Muslim from a high status family. Ms Darwish reveals the virulent anti Semitic and anti Christian preaching done in the Mosques, done in Arabic, done where no one from the West sees what's going on.

The Muhammad cartoons are nothing compared to the way the Muslim preachers spread hatred of the non Muslim. It would be great if tape transcripts of these sermons could be spread much further to wake up the West to Muslim depravity. MEMRI does this but needs wider distribution. Western liberals would be appalled and would more fully realize their real enemy. Islam thrives on hating the other as it tries to subjugate the other. Conquest and Jihad is the *REAL* first pillar of Islam

PA: Likud behind Muhammad cartoons

WASHINGTON - Palestinian Authority representative in Washington Afif Safieh charged Sunday that the Likud party is responsible for distributing Danish anti-Muhammad cartoons worldwide in a bid to bring about a collision between the western and Muslim worlds.

In a tense television debate held between Israeli Ambassador in Washington Danny Ayalon and Safieh, which was broadcast on CNN's "Late Edition," the Palestinian envoy was asked by host Wolf Blitzer to comment on the recent violent Muslim demonstrations across the world that erupted in response to the publication of caricatures mocking Prophet Muhammad in a Danish paper.

Safieh replied by saying that his personal acquaintance with both western and eastern societies has led him to believe the pro-Israeli Likud's global wing acted to bring the western, mostly-Christian society to a collision course with Islam.

Stunned by Safieh's answer, Blitzer asked his guest whether he was serious, or only joking. Safieh then explained that the editor of the Danish newspaper that originally published the cartoons is a fan of Jewish right-wing columnist Daniel Pipes, and that the two cooperated in distributing the caricatures that roused furor among Muslims.

Israeli Ambassador Ayalon dismissed the remarks and said they were "nonsense." Ayalon stated he was as much concerned by these caricatures as by anti-Semitic cartoons in the Egyptian press, but added that what worried him even more was the Muslim reaction, including flag burning, torching embassies and physically hurting people.

I did not see such a response when anti-Semitic or anti-Christian cartoons were published, Ayalon said.

'Hamas won't enforce religious reforms'

During the interview, the Christian Safieh was also asked to refer to the possibility Hamas may transform the Palestinian society into a religious Muslim society. According to the PA representative, this was not a probable scenario.

Hamas knows it does not have a mandate to change curriculums in schools or force women to cover their faces with veils in order to make society more Muslim, Safieh said, adding the group is also aware of the fact it cannot go against the peace process the Palestinians yearn for.

Egypt’s Ambassador to the U.S. Nabil Fahmy, who also took part in the debate, referred to the recent meeting between Hamas representatives and government officials in Cairo, and said Egypt was very firm, candid and even blunt with Hamas.

Hamas representatives were told there would be no progress in the Middle East without engaging in a process that would lead to a two-state solution – a Palestinians state along side an Israeli state, Fahmy said. The best way to do it is not to get dragged into a cycle of violence with Israel, Hamas was told.

Ambassador Ayalon stressed in the interview Israel's stance that there would be no negotiations with a Palestinian government that includes Hamas until the group accepts the Quartet's and Security Council's preconditions to renounce terror and disarm.

Go Nonie !

Nonie Darwish should publish more that she does. Her insights and experiences are very helpful as an insider into Muslim society. The Muslims in "Islamic" countires live in Jim Crow societies with laws and systems in place that enables even uneducated, economically disadvantaged Muslims to act and feel superior over a more educated, sophisticated non-Muslims. The laws and cultural considerations always favor Muslims. Those Muslims who move to the West feel frustration and anger as their superior status via their religious is reduced due to the secular societies where they have chosen to live. They have lost their birth right as Muslims. The cartoon rage in Europe is part of this frustration. Dhimmis in Muslim countries would know better than to draw cartoon of Muhammed. The dhimmis of the West will have to be taught their place in the Jim Crow mindset of their new Muslim neighbors.

Muslims fly commercial airliners into buildings in New York City.
No Muslim outrage.
Muslim officials block the exit where school girls are trying to escape a burning building because their faces were exposed.
No Muslim outrage.
Muslims cut off the heads of three teenaged girls on their way to school in Indonesia. A Christian school.

Let's go way back. Muslims kidnap and kill athletes at the Munich Summer Olympics.
No Muslim outrage.
Muslims fire rocket-propelled grenades into schools full of children in Israel. No Muslim outrage.
Muslims murder more than 50 commuters in attacks on London subways and busses. Over 700 are injured.
No Muslim outrage.
Muslims massacre dozens of innocents at a Passover Seder.
No Muslim outrage.
Muslims murder innocent vacationers in Bali.

No Muslim outrage.
Muslims are involved, on one side or the other, in almost every one of the 125+ shooting wars around the world.
No Muslim outrage.
Muslims beat the charred bodies of Western civilians with their shoes, then hang them from a bridge.
No Muslim outrage.
Newspapers in Denmark and Norway publish cartoons depicting Mohammed. Muslims are outraged.
Dead children. Dead tourists. Dead teachers. Dead doctors and nurses. Death, destruction and mayhem around the world at the hands of Muslims .. no Muslim outrage ... but publish a cartoon depicting Mohammed with a bomb in his turban and all hell breaks loose.

Thx, Nonie, I'm glad you don't have anything against Jewish dogs. You can scratch me behind my ears. Woof! Woof!

"Muslims cannot love the enemies of God, and those who do will get no mercy in hell."

Are you listening, Hollywood? Back in the 70's you created a sitcom called Bridget Loves Bernie when Catholics and Jews started to intermarry. Maybe now you could produce "Mustafa Loves Sophie" to show that there can be love between Muslims and Jews. I'd sooner watch that than that Book Of Daniel filth you popped out there this season.

Anyone listening? Buehler? Anyone?

As a liberal, I agree totally with the comments posted on this website. I am glad that someone notices what the Muslims are doing! Whew!

I work with both Dems and Reps and I seem to be the only one who understands the threat the Muslims are to the world.

Thanks for not bowing to those bullies! Keep it up!

Great work Siciliano. With your permission I will print a copy as it is a succinct synopsis answering the claim that 'moderate' muslims object to the terrorism. The silence is obviously deafening. There is so much to say to people about the threat of islam and yet it's hard to summarize arguments quickly. You did a great job there.

The following revealing letter in Milpitas Post by an apostate Muslim also confirms that Muslims are brainwashed into hating non-Muslimsfrom a very young age.

Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor,
I was saddened to read the letter of Javed Altaf in the Milpitas Post dated Feb 2, "Text clashes extremist, moderate Hindus." As a woman from Pakistan who immigrated to the United States, I would like to tell everyone that there are people in Pakistan who do not show such hatred toward others.
I grew up in Pakistan and we were always taught to hate India, Israel and America. Our school books described Christians, Jews and Hindus as evil people, and unfortunately most Pakistanis exhibit a lot of hatred because of this. I was ashamed when Pakistanis celebrated on the streets after innocent people were killed in the Sept. 11 attacks. Even when I got my passport, I had to sign a statement on the application form that I consider the leader of Qadiani group of Muslims to be an imposter and his followers to be non-Muslim. I felt uncomfortable signing it as I somehow thought it is a hateful thing to do. To all Qadiani brothers and sisters, I wish to apologize on behalf of Pakistanis and say I am truly sorry I signed the statement.
Fortunately, I had the chance to leave Pakistan and find freedom in America. Now, I do not have to cover myself with a burqa.
I learned that one can be a good person even without being a Muslim and I got the confidence to question Islam. Islam is an artificial religion of medieval Arabs. Why should I accept any religion that forces me to wear a burqa and prevents my education?
Mr. Altaf's letter talks about caste system in India. I want to point out that the caste system is alive and well in Pakistan as well. It is hypocritical of Pakistanis to talk of a caste system.
The people of Pakistan are no different from the people of India except that we are born into Islam. This unfortunate difference gave birth to Pakistan, which has the dishonor of being created as the world's first religion-based country. We should never have left India because forming a country based on religion tells the world that we are hateful people. Please tell your readers that not all Pakistanis are hateful people.
Ironically, my own life has been one where the differences between Indians and Pakistanis have been buried. After leaving Islam, I searched for spiritual peace and met a wonderful man who is a Hindu from India. Today, he is my husband and I find that I have a lot of freedom. Women in Islam do not have any freedom and four women are considered to be equal to one man. I realize that I would not have had the opportunity to meet my husband had I not come to America and got my freedom. There are many women like me who long for freedom. I sincerely wish I could do something for my sisters or that America would liberate my sisters but without hurting the people.

before everyone goes congratulating siciliano for his great work (it is great)on muslim outrage, please know that siciliano is NOT the author. Radio host Neil Boortz is, guaranteed.

Siciliano

You're a poet - perhaps you don't kmow it

To paraphrase the Prophet W.C. of Fields:

Any "religion" that hates dogs and pigs can't be any good.

(And my 2 four-footed friends, warming my feet, and my heart, con-curr.)

Sorry, but I refuse to jump on the Nonie bandwagon.

Key phrase: "That was when I first realised that something was very wrong in the way my religion was taught and practised."

Why not something wrong with religion itself? We already know Muslims preach and teach hatred. She is adding nothing to the debate. The question is WHY is Islam the "anti-religion religion"?

Even though it is refreshing to hear a Muslim admit these things, one cannot help but wonder how she can possibly remain a Muslim knowing all this. WHY?

Rebecca JW

I agree. Nonie is trying to disassociate all the barbarity of muslims we see, from the tenets of islam as espoused in the koran. She is similar to Irshad Manji who believes that a Reformation of islam is possible, and thus makes excuses, that there are many worthwhile thinks in islam. Tosh- Taqqiya used to fool the Infidel.

People such as Irshad Manji I'm more distrustful of then the likes of Bakri and Hamza. The last two are honest about islam, and I respect that.

Only the apostates get it. Ali Sena, Ibn Warraq, Anwar Sheikh, Taslima Hussein, Irsi Ali.

BTW Hasnt Nonie left islam to become a Christian?

"Nonie is trying to disassociate all the barbarity of muslims..."

If this is the best we can expect from "moderate" Muslims -- I say -- 'Big Deal'. I need to see action! Not continued "disassociation", nor continued denials... Big Deal! If a couple random Muslims admit to the world that Islam is flawed, or that the teaching of Islam is flawed -- We need to see "reform" and we need to see it YESTERDAY! Continued parsings about the nature of Islam are useless.

I wonder if the Muslims in the West are beginning to feel a little heat? -- Their welcome is certainly wearing thin... Prior to 9/11, and perhaps through 2004 or 2005 they may have had some Jihadi momentum on their side... But they've so drastically overplayed their hand this time...

Good God! -- They've got the Danes and the Norwegians beginning to openly wonder about them -- The Germans and French too! Even those long suffering Brits are beginning to break out of their diffident attitudes and say what they really think about the Muslims -- It isn't pretty, but it's about time!

MORE KHARTOUNS! MORE KHARTOUNS! MORE KHARTOUNS!

and then

MORE MUSLIM "OUTRAGE!!!" & MORE MUSLIM "RAMPAGE!!"

Call me cruel, but I find it strangely wonderful watching all these Muslim cultures coming apart at the seams, potentially signalling their respective meltdowns... Perhaps we shouldn't step into the Afghanistans and Iraq to fix them -- a containment policy, one which severely restricts these Muslim bottom feeders to their various cesspools of origin - let them tear the place apart -- let them "teach" their deplorable "religion" to their children -- let them worship their idols of hatred and backwardness -- but keep them in Pakistan -- keep them in Saudi Arabia -- keep them in Iraq, and Iran, and Syria, and Jordan, and Egypt -- Let them wallow in their Muslim wonderfulness -- and prevent them from coming to the West and spoiling a great thing... Keep the dirty monsters in the pen of their own devising -- the cage of Islam --

What's arabic for "cage"?
