WASHINGTON - Lawmakers determined to capsize the pending sale of shipping operations at six major U.S. seaports to a state-owned business in the United Arab Emirates said President Bush's surprise veto threat won't deter them.Bush on Tuesday brushed aside objections by leaders in the Senate and House that the $6.8 billion sale could raise risks of terrorism at American ports. In a forceful defense of his administration's earlier approval of the deal, he pledged to veto any bill Congress might approve to block the agreement.
The sale's harshest critics were not appeased.
"I will fight harder than ever for this legislation, and if it is vetoed I will fight as hard as I can to override it," said Rep. Pete King, R-N.Y., chairman of the Homeland Security Committee. King and Democratic Sen. Charles Schumer of New York said they will introduce emergency legislation to suspend the ports deal.
Another Democrat, Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey, urged his colleagues to force Bush to wield his veto, which Bush — in his sixth year in office — has never done. "We should really test the resolve of the president on this one because what we're really doing is securing the safety of our people."

Are the democrats making political hay over this? You bet. Are the GOPers running for cover? Of course. Banks in this financial hub of the Arab world remain a key focus in the investigation into terror funding despite moves to tighten reporting rules, freeze accounts and control informal money transfers, U.S. and Arab officials told The Associated Press.
The reason: Dubai's history of shady transactions and the difficulty of tracking a matrix of legal and illegal free trade.
About half the $250,000 spent on the Sept. 11 attacks was wired to al-Qaida terrorists in the United States from Dubai banks, U.S. Treasury and Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates officials said.

My 2 cents to the interpretation of recent events, sans the conspiracy mongering.
Bush vetoes the draft legislation passed by Congress banning the port deal. The bill comes back and gets over 2/3rds majority and the ports become safe. Bush effectively says he's done all he could in the interests of fairness and transparency and the ports stand protected.
Why does Bush wanna seem to be supporting the port deal though? Methinks it has to do with global trade issues. Imagine if you will, a situation where arab states and some other traditional US baiters like Venezuela, China etc now invoke 'domestic national security' as a blanklet excuse to deny business to US companies worldwide...its neither farfetched nor small change. Imagine a turkey, an indonesia, or an Argentiuna invoking national secutirty to deny legitimate US business contracts in infrastructure projects, finance projects, tech projects and what not. A US retaliation will do even more damage to world trade. An eye for an eye will make the entire world blind. Scene doesn't look pretty. Overall, Bush is playing a calculated game. (Another Rovian masterploy?). Who knows? But I shall for now resist the temptation to rush headlong into Bush bashing and await the next turn of events.

This is a fact of life today. Many nations (including several of those mentioned by the poster) maintain restrictions on foreign companies doing business in their local market, particularly, acquiring a controlling interest in domestic firms where there are national security concerns or simply a desire by government to protect local industries and constituencies.
Gee, after 6 years in office, I guess GWB really is a uniter, not a divider. He has united the entire nation against him.

God cowboy? I'm sure that's a typo, but sometimes some of the posters here (eg. lost_soul) really make me wonder if their loyalty is to the country, or to GWB. Personally, if the Republicans or Democrats or Green Party or Libertarian Party or Whigs or Tories want to speak out on the danger of jihad and to take action to protect the country, that's all good by me. If we have to choose between supporting GWB or supporting the security of the nation, it's really not close. At least for me. All this complaining that the Democrats will look good because they are protecting the ports is, well, disturbing.
