Not surprisingly, our old friends of al-Muhajiroun, the British-based Muslim group that held pro-Osama and pro-9/11 rallies and held seminars with titles like "The Obligation of Inciting Religious Hatred," is stoking cartoon rage in Britain. From The Guardian, with thanks to John:
When worldwide Muslim fury over cartoons of the Prophet spread to Britain, the flag-burning protests outside the Danish embassy in London appeared to be an entirely spontaneous outpouring of anger.Inquiries by the Guardian have shown, however, that a key role in organising the demonstration was played by an Islamist sect whose supporters have repeatedly been linked to violence and terrorism.
Al-Ghurabaa, the organisation which takes credit for the protest, is essentially the same organisation as al-Muhajiroun, a sect which claims to have disbanded more than a year ago and whose founder, Omar Bakri Mohammed, was excluded from the UK last summer, shortly after he fled to Beirut.
They are uniquely British organisations which share the same leadership and same incendiary rhetoric. Their websites appear to be registered to the same house in north London. They hold an identical allure for a small but bitterly disaffected group of young British Muslims. And their members say they owe allegiance to the same "spiritual leader": Bakri. The organisation may be banned, under both its guises, after the terrorism bill reaches its final stage in the Commons on Wednesday. Already, however, there is evidence that supporters of al-Ghurabaa - which means the strangers - are reorganising themselves under several new names, such as al-Firqat un-Naajiyah and Ahl al Sunnah Wal Jamaa'ah: the Saved Sect, and the Messenger and his Companions.
Asked yesterday what the group would do if banned, Anjem Choudary, Bakri's right-hand man, said: "It may push a lot of people underground, and that is something the government should be concerned about."
Al-Ghurabaa, like al-Muhajiroun, makes no secret of its adoration of Osama bin Laden, and both are openly homophobic. Its website also espouses the murder of any who insult the Prophet.
In the wake of the Danish embassy demonstrations, al-Ghurabaa's website was offering a series of articles and essays, some harmless, others bizarre, and a few which will be seen as offensive....
Another, headlined the Lion Roars Again, hails Osama bin Laden as a man of "honour and dignity", whose roar causes the US to "shiver with fear and panic".
An essay about the cartoons was entitled Kill Those Who Insult Muhammad. Others were entitled There is No Room for Homosexuality in Islam, Homosexual Today Paedophile Tomorrow, and Homosexuality: A Crime....

Banning these people won't save any innocent lives. These people want to kill you. They say so. They mean it. Believe them. Round them up, lock them up, and deport them to a sharia'a paradise of their choosing. That is the only way to save lives.
The nice lady who wrote out those signs seemed well-versed as for what to actually write... or else this was an impressive feat of Islamic creativity. One got the impression that the slogans had been chosen at the meeting inside Regents Park Mosque, and that perhaps the vitriol wasn't as spontaneous as it was supposed to look.
Today's protest against 'islamophobia' in Trafalgar Sq. appears to have attracted around 500 Muslims, somewhat short of the 50,000 projected by organisers. The crowd held placards calling for mercy and respect, as George Galloway shouted paranoid rhetoric while gesticulating wildly.
I love this site. Kudos to you, Robert, for disseminating information that keeps us up to date on what's happening and who's responsible for what. If knowledge is indeed power, we who are against the onslaught of Islamic tyranny are arming ourselves with the best weapons available. It is the absolute opposite of see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.

The Respect Of A Cousin

After the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten’s 12 caricatures of the prophet Muhammad were republished in European newspapers, riots erupted in Damascus, Gaza, Beirut and elsewhere throughout the Muslim world. The violence is an extreme manifestation of the deep hurt felt by virtually all Muslims.
As we condemn the violence on the streets, perhaps we should take a moment to understand the hurt in the hearts of the great majority of Muslims who did not engage in violence.
For Muslims, the mere rendering of an image of Muhammad is sacrilege. The portrayal of Muhammad in a pejorative fashion is to them an inconceivably offensive desecration, on the level of what would be for us the defilement of a Torah scroll. Because it was done in newspapers across Europe, it was a slap in the face repeated thousands of times.
Perhaps it’s a question of respect, not freedom. Freedom of expression theoretically protects the right of a non-Jew to desecrate a Torah scroll. Yet we would all view freedom of expression as a hollow defense to such a vile act.
Some say Muslims can’t take criticism and simply don’t understand freedom of the press. In my own limited experience, that has not been the case. For the past year I’ve written a column in a Muslim newspaper, Muslims Weekly, in which I’ve criticized suicide bombing, the treatment of Jews under Islamic rule, the anti-Jewish rantings of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and even Muslims Weekly’s own reporting about Israel. But it was all done with respect, an informed appreciation of the wonderful benefits that Islam conferred upon the Jewish people, along with a willingness to look at our own imperfections together with those of the other.
Regardless of whether or not the European press was constitutionally free to publish the offensive images, the act was a blatant and vulgar act of disrespect to Islam. Such insults no doubt contribute to the frightening specter of a clash of civilizations.
What can we do as Jews to lessen the hostilities? Perhaps, just perhaps, a little respect would help. Rather than ripping the wounds wider with editorial musings extolling freedom of speech and condemning violent protests, is it not time for a bit of healing?
The pages of this Jewish newspaper present a place for a small start by showing Muslims right here that though we too have the freedom to say anything we like, we choose to convey respect to our Muslim cousins. Printing something positive about Muhammad best does this.
There is a space between romanticizing the past and vilifying it. There is a time to focus on the dark side of history and a time to view the other in the best light. There is a time to cull from our rabbinic writings the good our sages saw in Islam and there is quite a bit of such sentiment recorded. We Jews need to learn to be more flexible, pursuing the claims of Jews expelled from Arab countries and criticizing anti-Jewish TV programs and cartoons in the Muslim media, while at the same time displaying gratitude for all the good Islam did for us. There is a time to jump over our pain and see the humanity of the other. That time is now. Let us start:
There is a Hadith (oral tradition concerning the words and works of Muhammad) recorded by Bukhari in the name of Amer Bin Rabiha that reads as follows:
“A funeral procession passed us and the Prophet stood up for it. We said, ‘but Prophet of God, this is a funeral of a Jew.’ The Prophet responded, ‘rise.’ ”
One can search the writings of the ancient non-Jewish world for a more powerful example of a public display of respect for the humanity of the Jew. There simply is no more powerful statement than the single word uttered by Muhammad nearly 14 centuries ago.
Some readers will bombard this newspaper with reams of material showing a darker side to Islam, as if it were just too much for them to hear one good thing. But it is there, it is a sacred part of their tradition, it is good and we should hear it and respect it.
When you give respect you get it. When you take criticism, you earn the right to give it. Perhaps this article will be republished in Muslim newspapers, compete with its critical comments about the pain we feel in the face of anti-Jewish cartoons and worse in Muslim media. Muslim readers may come to understand that an article by a Jew, in a Jewish newspaper, was one of respect, telling its audience: “We know that the one mocked in newspapers in Europe is the one who had the humanity to tell his companions to rise for the funeral procession of a Jew.” n

The one thing I have observed in reading the posts at this site is how quick most of you are to incite and instigate some kind of reaction out of people you think are not one of you. You seem to want only to spark some kind of emotion from people just trying to communicate with you. Gee whiz, seems a whole lot just like what those dang cartoons were intended to do... provoke a reaction.

Your site host has been exposed as a provocateur, not a freedom-lover, and you all get a big, fat “F”, for failing to practice what you preach. I sudder to think what you’d do if someone drew a not-so-funny cartoon of drunken disciples at the Last Supper or painted Jesus and Mary Magdalene as "more than friends".

Since the owner of this website professes to be a devout catholic and a freedom-loving man, to him I'd like to say just a few words. Your tactics of hiding behind the internet to spew hatred while pretending to stand for freedom have exposed you for the hypocrite you are. I know plenty of decent, catholic people that wouldn’t share a pew with you.. Why, before choosing Islam, I strongly contemplated becoming catholic, since it was so close to my episcopal roots, but thank God I didn't.

Giving criticsm has nothing at all to do with setting embassies on fire and carrying placards glroifying the bombings of 7/7.
If you'd like to discuss Jewish reaction to defilement, take a look at "palestinians" destroying synagoges in Gush Katif after the Israelis forced their own people out of their homes and communities. Note that there were no worldwide protests, indeed there were no protests in Israel, only (more) tears.
Or, perhaps the defilement of Torah scrolls, since it was mentioned. The firebombing of a synagogue in Montreal did not result in any eye-for-an-eye behaviour. Instead, we were asked to send money and children's books to help rebuild that which was lost. A world of difference in our responses to a real tragedy vs. Muslim response to cartoons.

Edward Miller, I am very sorry to tell you that you are confused about Islam. You do not seem to realize that Islam is a political religious ideology with the goal of world domination.
The West is a risk -and probably will lose if the West does not become ruthless. - Time and the current postmodern cultural relativist attitude give Islam the upper hand. Time? Because they are taking demographically over Europe. Unchallenged, Islam will dominate Europe within the next 10 years. Cultural relativism? Because it drains the will to survive.
The longer the West delay action to defend itself the more suffering. This is a depressing thought, but one need to extract the cancer early otherwise the body dies. Isn't it?

Slavery is an unnatural condition. It is bondage. By force, threat or trickery, it is an insult to everything that is human and good. In reality, it is not possible to 'own' another person. Maybe you should work on finishing up your GED before coming back here. I also suggest a good study of the Quran, hadiths (esp. Sahih Bukhari and Muslim) and the Sira. A little browse of history over the last 1400 years would help and works such as ibn Khaldun's Muqqadimah might also be in order. Oh, and don't forget to read Sayyad Qutb's Milestones and Social Justice in Islam. For a good laugh you can try Said's Orientalism and of course that classic howler, Islam and Revolution (Imam Khomeini). Become familiar with the exegesis of the Quran.

One would think by now that the "Islam = peace" nonsense would not need correcting, but I keep encountering it – just yesterday asserted by a hostile questioner at a talk I gave at Ashland University, today in an oped. So, for the record:
Most Arabic words are based on a trilateral root system, such as k-t-b or s-l-m. The words formed from these roots often have a connection to one another (kataba is to write, kitāb is a book, maktaba is a library, and so on), but not always (a katība is a squadron of soldiers). In other words, roots have a core meaning but also include unrelated words.
In the case of s-l-m, salām means peace and salāma means safety. But the root also has many meanings unconnected to this core, such as salam (a variety of acacia) sullam (ladder), sulāmā (digital bone in the hand or foot), sulaymāni (mercury chloride), aslama (to betray) … and islām (submission).
There is no connection in meaning between salām and islām, peace and submission. These are two distinct words with unrelated meetings. In brief, "Islam = submission."

My beta went to the demonstration today in London, he is at a Uni close by. He rang me and siad it was a largely peaceful affair, with only "approved" slogans allowed today.
Talking to a lot of muslims there (he never told them that he is Ahmadi) he learned the following in a discussion when getting out of the cold:

2) They were intensely disappointed that the last prophet of God was not chosen to be a jew..i.e. that they were no longer the chosen people of God.

igor - the last few threads have made me quite amenable to your point of view, believe me. I increasingly see the futility of arguing with these folks. But I have to keep in mind all the new readers here - new ones every single day quite probably, as things heat up - the ones who haven't seen the futility of it yet. It wasn't very long ago at all that I myself didn't appreciate the futility. I have to think that there's some merit in each reader discovering that for themselves, the hard way! The shema of the Jews says "Hear oh Israel the Lord our God, is One!". The bible says in First Timothy, Chapter 2, verse 5: "There is (only) One God and (only) one mediator between God and men, the man Christ, Jesus." You appear to be poorly informed about other religions, but then you admitted there were things you didn't know about Mohammed that you learned here. Where is Mohammed proven a prophet in the Q'uran? There are no prophecies given by God to him in the Q'uran. The Law of Moses says in Deuteronomy 18:21-22: "21 You may say to yourselves, "How can we know when a message has not been spoken by the LORD?" 22 If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the LORD does not take place or come true, that is a message the LORD has not spoken. That prophet has spoken presumptuously. Do not be afraid of him."
Before you can believe that the Jews proclaimed Mohammed as a prophet, he must first prove himself to be a prophet, and he falls pitifully short of that. No prophecy = no prophet.
