As previously posted, America took the shackles off the Shiites. The Sunnis believe it is still as was under Sadam and they can do whatever they want to the Shiites.

This story was on ABC's evening news tonight, and the report included something about the US being "committed to rebuilding the shrine."
One's mind immediately turns to all the Katrina victims still waiting for FEMA trailers, and others who are slogging through the agonizingly slow rebuilding of the Gulf Coast.
We didn't wreck the shrine (though blame will be transferred to us one way or another). Then, why should we fix it? If Sistani has enough funds to funnel some to Iran, it's all the more reason he should bear the burden of fundraising and rebuilding (or how about some Iranian rebuilding money while they're at it?). They'll naturally make much better use of time and resources if they're not spending someone else's money.
Get a double-wide FEMA trailer, put a fiberglass dome on it, and point it at Mecca before taking the wheels off. That'll do just fine.

Requirements for the job: quash dissent, perceived or real, brutally, murderously and quickly, or the whole country becomes bedlam. Democracy? Waste of time, won't work, requires normal people. No evidence of such people in Islamic countries.
Democracy without some kind of social reciprocation is a recipe for tyranny. Secular Christian democracy works because the "do unto others" maxim doesn't necessarily NEED an altruistic incentive - my equality is yours is everyone else's - so ppl only need protect their own 'egalitarianism' to automatically affirm everbodies... this way, equality & altruism become emergent properties in spite of base human nature. But only if the ideal is broadly reciprocated. If another culture comes along that doesn't reciprocate our values... like someone said here recently: if a tolerant society tries to unite with an intolerate one, which will eventually dominate?

Taxpayer funds for rebuilding a mosque violates the separation of church and state. It is unconstitutional. Or does Bush wish to have American taxpayers pay government lawyers to prepare a case showing that using government funds for a mosque in Samarra does not violate the separation of church and state, that is, the Establishment Clause.
There is only one argument that can legitimately be made to support that use of taxpayers's money. The argument? That Islam is "not a religion." That's an argument we can all support. That's an argument to go with -- but not for the reasons those who would in this case use it might think.

The Golden Domed shrine was not "one of Islam's holiest sites" (as the BBC puts it), but a place "holy" merely to the smaller Shi'ite Muslim sect, and looked on by the Sunni majority as a challenge to their authority. Tolerable only until they could openly obliterate it down the road. Zarqawi is just getting ahead of their game plan.
Why the Shi'ites allow the structural "iconography" and real estate "idolatry" of "shrines", after all we've heard about not "worshipping" objects or images related to the flap about the Mohammad cartoons, seems utterly hypocritical. Or schizophrenic

I was thinking about this same thing the other day as I was holding my nose listening to some NPR report on Iraq. It was going on and on about this and that holiest, holy city/mosque/shrine/imam (even a cemetary!) in Iraq. It's so revealing how they fall all over themselves being oh so respectful and deferential towards Islamic religious symbols/beliefs/sites. But no such respect or recognition is given ANY other religion. If Bethlehem or Jerusalem, for example, are mentioned in a news report, there is no "Holy" attached. Is the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris ever described as "Holy"? no, never. Old churches in europe are simply, well, old churches, or possibly tourist attractions if the architecture is noteworthy.
Journalists in America and Europe are basically secular, liberal humanists, and it shows in their overall lack of knowledge or interest in the 'usual' religions, and general lack of respect too. But, God Almighty!, bring up anything Islamic onto their radar screen and it's like some Pavlovian compulsion to drop down on all fours and pray to Mecca five times per story. It's both sad and comic.
But back on the main topic... it's hard to see anything but Civil War coming soon to Iraq.
