"Sheikh's plea to Australian media," from AAP:
A SENIOR Islamic cleric has called on Australia's media not to publish the cartoons which have sparked riots across the Muslim world.Sheikh Fehmi El-Imam, the general secretary of the Board of Imams of Victoria, warned reprinting the cartoons here could "disturb people who can do things that we don't want them to do".
Hmmm. Is that a veiled threat?
"In some parts of the world there is rioting against the Danish and the Dutch, we don't want that in Australia," the sheikh said today...
No, we certainly wouldn't want that in Australia, but is the answer to appease Muslims by not printing the cartoons, or is the answer for Muslims to restrain their own actions regardless of how they feel? I believe that to be the bare minimum required of a civilized society.
Meanwhile, according to the Sydney Morning Herald:
The Dominion Post and the Christchurch Press both published controversial cartoons of the prophet Mohammad yesterday, upsetting New Zealand Muslims, who say it could cost New Zealand $100 million in lost trade deals. Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has reportedly said he would review all economic relations with countries where the cartoons had been published.[NZ] Prime Minister Helen Clark has slammed as gratuitous the decision by two New Zealand newspapers to publish cartoons which have enraged the Muslim world...
Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has reportedly said he would review all economic relations with countries where the cartoons had been published.
It seems to me this is what Hugh has been asking for for months. Economically isolate them. Here it is on a silver platter. If all industrialized (you see where I'm going here, right) nations printed the cartoons, then Ahmadasahatter would cease trade relations with all of us and soon there would be zip left in Iran that worked. There would just be oil sitting in the ground with broken oil pumps because eventually a bolt will break and need to be repaired and all for the want of a horseshoe nail the war was lost.
Dixie,
Maybe that day's not so far off. Once Shale oilbecomes commercially viable, the arab stranglehold on oil supplies loses its biggest chokepoint.
Then an economic boycott or delibrtae sabotage of oil pumps cold well be an option. Right now, like kissinger said: "Diplomacy is the art of saying nice doggy till you find a stick".
After the beatings the Muslims recently took in Australia for attacking lifeguards and other Australians, they would be incredibly stupid to start anything up down under. The Aussies are just waiting for another excuse to thrash these freedloaders again.
Muslims just cant seem to keep themselves from talkin tough, can they?
They should all be kicked out of the west. They are nothing but a problem. Nothing but a drain on western economies and radical thinkers.
jerks.
It sounded to me like the Sheikh Fehmi El-Imam was giving the signal to attack if the cartoons are published in Australia. How arrogant and treacherous are these people???
I wonder when western countries will start rounding up the leaders of all these assorted Islamic "groups", and start laying sedition charges.
Those counties that don"t wish to publish the cartoons will need to do so as an advertisement for a meeting or something they may not turn down advertising can they?
We just suffered through a Christmas season where Christ came under public attack more than I can ever recall my life, and yet, lo and behold, there was not one violent demonstration by Christians anywhere that I can recollect.
There is no equivalancy. Islam is NOT a peaceful religion. Christianity IS. The proof is in the history. The proof is in daily events. The proof is in charitable foundations, teachings and caretaking. The proof is in tolerance.
We can certainly not allow Free Speech to be thwarted by Islamists. Fundatmental Western values must be protected at all costs; and yes, in blood if necessary.
Foehammer-
Christianity is a danger when it does not live up to its ideals.
Islam is a danger when it does.
Hey Aussies write to your papers asking them
to print the pictures. And, since I know you
guys are tough, you should be flying the pictures
at those beaches!
Who does he include in the pronoun "WE"? Is he referring only to the Muslims? When most Australians say "we" I suspect they imagine a certain inclusive notion with roughly if imperfectly reflects the collective mind of the "average" Australian -- When a Muslim in "infidel" lands says "we" he is only considering the wants and demands of his exclusive little group of "believers". The terms "infidel", "believer", and usage of pronouns such as "we" and "us" by Muslims is subtle, but revealing. The notion of separation between the Muslim and all the rest is completely steeped in the Muslim psyche.
Prior to their Great Jihad which appears to have begun in earnest with 9/11, all of their hatred and bellicosity bothered me little. I took their threats to be the chatter from an inferior culture who was rageful in their impotence -- humiliated by their failures when compared with our astounding successes in the world -- largely ignorable for the primitive angry inconsequential heathens and barbarians that they are...
But after 9/11, learning about the earnestness and their successes in the global Islamic lust for WMD, I was forced by their actions to take their threats, and their hatred, and their actions far more seriously.
Little things such as how Muslims in the West use a term like "we" now is of paramount importance. While it may seem subtle -- I think the significance of such things is gargantuan...
Send this filth back to the hell-hole from whence he came... The Australians must not allow him to contaminate their fine nation with his poison and his dirtiness. Islam must be contained like a contagious and deadly disease... or an extremely toxic form of pollution...
It's ability to erode, destroy, terrorize, and then dominate is unquestioned. It's tactics of terrorism, intolerance, promulgation of hatred and violence have been tested in the alembic of world history for over a millenium -- and their track record of destroying and then dominating former world powers is as impressive as it is horrific.
Islam -- destroyer of worlds -- destroyer of history -- destroyer of truth --destroyer of souls -- destroyer of peace -- degrader of humanity -- instrument of evil... Disease -- contagion -- corruption -- hatred -- death..
I forgot "pollution."
I had Danish blue cheese in my omelete this morning and tonight I will be eating New Zealand lamb. heh.
Would it surprise Sheikh Fehmi El-Imam that many people from the Middle East seek a life in the West citing as one of their reasons their desire to experience eleutheromania. In a demonstration of the freedom we enjoy a few cartoons are published which might offend those Middle East people and those freedom-loving people turn feral. It looks like they weren't seeking freedom in the first place. They aren't ready nor can they handle freedom.
The publishing of the cartoons in New Zealand is very mild. It could have been a whole lot worse. The newspaper could have published photos of Prime Minister Helen Clark. I think she should be out chasing cars or working for one of those before and after facial make-over places where her face could be used for the 'before' look.

DP111~ you can tell they teach tolerance, right. The pope, nuns, priests. All being shot. But they are people of the book, yeah right.
jsla, brilliant and well written !
I agree with every word.
Just heard on the radio that the Brisbane Courier Mail has published, or will be publishing the cartoons. I may be wrong, but I know I heard something to that effect as I was turning on the radio.
Talkback radio here has been about 95% against the Muslims re this issue. It's good to hear all the well-informed callers who know what Islam is all about, and they're not beating about the bush either! Others just do not accept or approve of the behaviour they've seen, and view that as a clear indication there's a problem with Muslims. Many callers have said "if they don't like it, they can leave".
Others have seen the double-standards of countries, like the UK, where they don't arrest Muslims inciting violence yet arrest some guy carrying copies of the cartoons. People see it's the same here - Sydney: arrests of anglo-Austrlians over the Cronulla riot, yet a softly-softly approach to the Muslims who deliberately went on a rampage for 2 nights afterwards.
People aren't as stupid as the Lefties think we are. I just hope people aren't stupid at the voting booths. As far as I'm concerned, elections have become a one-issue thing. I vote for whom I think will protect our society from groveling before Islam. There's nothing else that's more important. We have everything else. It may not be perfect, but we're spoiled compared to other countries.
feralee - While some here will know I am dead set against the Lefties - I am oh so hopeful that this cartoon rage will stir them up (well at least a few of them). To tell the lefties what they can and cannot publish is like tearing down their “sacred cow”.
The Courier Mail did publish the pics. I was amazed. It was only a few weeks back that I wrote a letter criticizing some “Professor” Mohammed who is an “expert” in Middle East affairs. Anyway I said to the editor that I thought the Courier Mail was a Dhimmi paper. I think I will write back and say “sorry I was wrong”.
I also head on the ABC radio last night a series of cartoonists being interviewed. All of them bar a pitiful few, were against the Muslims reaction and demands about what they can and can’t do. In fact one cartoonist said,
“I think their actions (the Muslims) are fundamental, but more MENTAL than anything else!”
Classic!
Lets hope the Muslims keep up there “hissy fit”. It will only bring the left on board in a mutual cause that effects both sides.
A lot of NZers (even Labour voters) are absolutely disgusting with the govts selling out our free speech by sucking up to the fascist Iranian govt, in order not to damage our trade relations
This was posted on a forum by a staunch ex-Labour party supporter
On behalf of the dead soldier, who died fighting to defend the human rights and civil liberities of our secular democracy, may I laugh scornfully whenever I "air brushed picture" "you" making an issue of associating yourself with the defence of our nation.
We are not "New Zealand Inc", a global market trading enterpise with the ethics of Enron or Halliburton.
A government that abandons New Zealand's democratic values and heritage to the extent you have, has lost my support.
It seems you have abandoned more than the only partner you had in 2005, you have abandoned so much of the humanity first decency that one thought was there, that there is no reason to support this government's continuance.
Deliver WFF (and lets admit most of it is catch-up for f ailure to infaltion index support for families in earlier years not increased support - and we condemn Shipley for her cuts to Super) and interest free tertiary debt. Then go.
Spare us any further sense of betrayal. We can live with it from the right - we expect nothing (and Brash sold out as much as you did. - NZ Inc before free speech).
In 1940 Danes were asked to hand over Jews to the Nazis. They wore the yellow given by Nazis for Jews and got them to safety in Scandinavia.
It's called human to human solidarity. Labour used to understand collective security, remember when Labour used the word solidarity.
The media of Spain, Italy, France and Germany said that they were fellow Europeans o a common heritage. If one was being singled out for intimidation they would stand together.
You have your flawed man crawl to Teheran. I will not support a government that does such a thing.
After this, not even the UN will touch you. Enjoy your next trip to Norway
Britain in their gratuitous insult to European solidarity and you in yours to the freedoms of secular social democracy have become isolated.
Two government's in decline towards inevitable defeat. There is nothing worth defending.
I support those who defend free speech.
