Borders won't carry magazine containing prophet cartoons

I heard enough stories of The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam (and the Crusades) being hidden away in dark corners at Borders not to be surprised by this latest bit of dhimmitude.

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Borders and Waldenbooks stores will not stock the April-May issue of Free Inquiry magazine because it contains cartoons of Islam's Prophet Muhammad that provoked deadly protests among Muslims in several countries.

"For us, the safety and security of our customers and employees is a top priority, and we believe that carrying this issue could challenge that priority," Borders spokeswoman Beth Bingham said Wednesday.

In other words, we are afraid, and we are caving in to violent intimidation.

I'm glad you mentioned this. I've found your other books at libraries, Barnes & Nobel, even Borders, but I have not managed to get my hands on a single copy of the PIG to Islam. I've tried 5 libraries, but none of them seem to carry it. Yeah, I know I could try Amazon, but usually, I browse through a book before I buy it.

As for the story above, I'll say this for Borders - they've openly admitted that allowing any publication that contains the cartoons would be a trigger for riots. All that the unsuspecting public would need to do is draw the obvious conclusions. Namely, the large scale Muslim presense here has eroded and continues to erode our liberties a lot more than anything in the PATRIOT act could hope to do.

Maybe Borders is also afraid of getting sued by injured employees.

So much for Free Inquiry.

The pervasive threat of personal injury is one of the great strengths of Islam. This is one of the Unicorn's finest qualities.

It's like a 100mph fastball pitcher with very poor control. Nobody wants to step into the on-deck circle. The guy may be a lousy pitcher, but who wants to die?

I'd be willing to put up little promo cards on our church bulletin board or even place them on cars, if you give me permission so as to promote your book. I'm just getting through The Crusade section and can't put it down.

Indeed, ask if they have the issue. If not, politely find out why not. If that requires speaking to a manager, great!

Perhaps the manager would be willing to explain the statement from Borders Group:
For us, the safety and security of our customers and employees is a top priority, and we believe that carrying this issue could challenge that priority....

I'd really want to know how safety and security of staff and customers could be impaired by carrying this particular magazine, and impaired by whom?

I have a Borders Bookstore right next to my office building. I think I will go over at lunch and speak with a manager.

It would be one thing if they did not carry the magazine at all, but to carry the magazine but not carry this specific issue because they are scared is embarrassing...

How about not patronizing Borders or Waldens for a month? Do they really think Muslims will support them? Economic pressure would go a long way toward ending the dhimmi behavior at Borders.

The internet is our only hope. Resist any attempts to limit its freedom of expression. Robert, Hugh, please start the proposed online anti-islamism libarary/

So, all that Muslims need to do in the West is threaten terror, and they win?

I can just hear the call now:

"Put 'Free Inquiry' back on your shelves, or yuz won't have no shelves to be puttin' anything back on at all.. get me?"

'Playing fair', in the capitalist mode, means pleasing the noisiest customers.

Islam will always be that. They whine from dawn to dusk.

So, by the logic of cowardly commerce, Islam must succeed in the money-only-matters West.

But, by the time the business-fixated West grasps the inherent doom in this suicidal 'reasonableness' -when it somes to the petulant demands of Imperialistic Islam- it may be too far down this deadly path, demographically, to turn back.

(But I know where not to buy books, at least.)

Why is it that when we think of Islam - we think of security in the same breath.

I sent an email to Borders expressing my disappointment and this is the corporate shine I got back:

In this particular case, we decided not to stock this issue in our stores because we place a priority on the safety and security of our customers and our employees. We believe that carrying this issue presented a challenge to that priority.

We value your thoughts and sincerely appreciate that you invested your time to tell us how you feel about the issue. I can assure you that our management team gave careful deliberation to this decision and considered all sides of the issue before reaching this conclusion. As always, we are interested in customer feedback about our choices and while we know you do not agree with our position, we hope you can understand the challenge of balancing the needs of our customers, employees and our communities.
