In "Eurabian Nightmares" at FrontPage, Andrew Bostom, editor of the superlative Legacy of Jihad, reviews Bruce Bawer's equally important While Europe Slept:
Bruce Bawer’s 1997 Stealing Jesus decried the “claustrophobic narrowness” in American fundamentalist Christianity’s conception of the spiritual and divine. Bawer further maintained that its votaries “…breath taking combination of historical ignorance and theological certitude” had engendered a reductio ad absurdum literalist understanding of religion, effectively “..dispiriting…denying and dispelling…life’s mysteries.”By September 1998, Bawer and his male partner decided to relocate permanently to Europe, initially Amsterdam. The Netherlands sociopolitical discourse, Bawer believed, had transcended “culture war platitudes” and “…the foolishness of fundamentalism”. Bawer recalls candidly his own angry assessment of the contrasting American discourse at the time he departed for Europe:
Yes I loved my country, but I also realized that I wanted to be away from it—away from the idiocy, the intolerance, the Puritanism. More and more, I felt I belonged in Europe.While Europe Slept chronicles Bawer’s personal encounter with Europe’s ongoing Islamization since late 1998. And his riveting narrative is a testament to Bawer’s intellectual honesty. Shunning glib moral equivalences between America’s Christian fundamentalist movement, and the infinitely more radicalized and destructive Islam rapidly transforming a self-deluded Western Europe into Eurabia, Bawer was acutely aware, even prior to September 1, 2001 that
Europe was falling prey to an even more alarming fundamentalism whose leaders made their Protestant counterparts look like amateurs…Western Europeans had yet to even acknowledge that they had a Religious Right. How could they ignore it? Certainly as a gay man, I couldn’t close my eyes to this grim reality. Pat Robertson just wanted to deny me marriage; the imams wanted to drop a wall on me. I wasn’t fond of the hypocritical conservative-Christian line about hating the sin and loving the sinner, but it was preferable to the forthright fundamentalist Muslim view that homosexuals merited death.
The book is divided chronologically into three sections: prior to 9/11/01 (“Before 9/1: Europe in Denial”), in the immediate aftermath of 9/11/01 through March 10, 2004 (“9/11 and After: Blaming Americans and Jews”); and from the March 11, 2004 Madrid bombings through August 2005 (“Europe’s Weimar Moment: The Liberal Resistance and Its Prospects”).Early in the opening section, Bawer’s reaction to reading John Esposito’s transparent apologetic on Western Muslims struck a familiar cord—Esposito’s denial of any threat posed by European Islam (as Bawer aptly observes, a “…fundamentalist Islam [that] was on the march and wasn’t adapting to democratic values”) is consistent with the same author’s whitewashing of the brutal living legacy of the Islamic jihad conquests. A unique strength of While Europe Slept is that Bawer complements such perspicacious observations with hard data. Thus section one also introduces the reader to important information on Muslim demography and use (and abuse) of the Western European social welfare system. Although Muslims comprise (officially) between 2 and 10% of the population in most West European nations, France is already 12% Muslim and Switzerland 20%. But as Bawer notes, these statistics are merely the tip of the steadily emerging demographic iceberg:
Already, in most of Western Europe, 16 to 20 percent of children are Muslims…within a couple of generations many [Western European] countries will have Muslim majorities.Cognizant of this phenomenon, a Danish Muslim leader, typical of many European imams, declared triumphally in 2000, “Muslims have a dream of living in an Islamic society…This dream will surely be fulfilled in Denmark…We will eventually be a majority”. And such demography is already destiny in Islamic satellite colonies interspersed throughout Western Europe where demands for sovereignty began well before the recent Muslim intifada in France this past fall, 2005. Bawer provides these alarming examples from across Western Europe:
In France, a public official met with an imam at the edge of Roubaix’s Muslim district out of respect for his declaration of the neighborhood as Islamic territory to which she had no right of access. In Britain, imams have pressed the government to officially designate certain areas of Bradford as being under Muslim, not British, law. In Denmark, Muslim leaders have sought the same kind of control over parts of Copenhagen. And in Belgium, Muslims living in the Brussels neighborhood of Sint-Jans-Molenbeek already view it not as part of Belgium but as an area under Islamic jurisdiction in which Belgians are not welcome.These burgeoning Muslim communities are also consuming disproportionate amounts of state sponsored welfare benefits. For example, Danish Muslims comprise 5% of the population, yet they receive 40% of the governmental outlays. And despite this largesse, facilitated by sympathetic social workers, the social workers themselves are often tyrannized by their Muslim clients. Bawer describes the chilling situation in Denmark:
Some clients lay waste to social security offices and hit social workers—not out of frustration, but because they’ve learned that such bullying gets them what they want.Bawer further documents how Norwegian (Oslo) imams preach brazenly that Muslims should expect such welfare benefits—and feel justified in supplementing them by stealing from stores—as a form of jizya* extracted from their infidel “host” societies—societies that have not yet accepted their requisite subservience to Islamic Law!
The final two sections of While Europe Slept elaborate how even two cataclysmic events—the 9/11/01 and 3/11/04 mass murdering acts of jihad terrorism—failed to alter Western Europe’s self-destructive capitulation to Islamic atavism. Bawer recalls that a mere 36-hours after the devastation of 9/11/01, vitriolic anti-American attacks resumed unabated in the mainstream Western European media. He identifies one plausible source of this ignorant and seemingly implacable contempt:
The intensity of the European establishment’s anti-Americanism is matched only by the intensity of its nostalgia for the good old days of Soviet Communism. Few politicians, professors, or journalists will admit to missing Communism. But most of them are awfully quick to say that, well, at least when the Soviet Union was around, it provided a counterweight to American power. This despicable, but now standard line, turns Cold War history on its head.Bawer also describes the resurgence of raw Antisemitic rhetoric, and anti-Jewish violence fomented, in part, by “poisonous, fraudulent reportage” throughout Western Europe. And when blatantly Judenhass crimes committed by Muslims are grudgingly reported by this same media, critical details routinely omitted in such accounts, include:
(a) that Muslims in Europe have not been attacked by Jews; (b) that unlike anti-Semitic acts, which are encouraged and applauded by influential figures within the Muslim community, anti-Muslim attacks are isolated events that no respected person or institution approves of; (c) that the number of anti-Muslim attacks is dwarfed by the number of attacks on JewsThe third (and last) section of While Europe Slept analyzes the moribund responses to the 3/11/04 Madrid bombings, in addition to subsequent lesser traumas such as the murder of Theo Van Gogh and the 7/7/05 London bombings. Bawer excoriates these grossly inadequate reactions as tantamount to “…a chorus singing hymns of brotherhood and eager to convert the entire world to its religion of eternal peace”, concluding,
It’s a pretty delusion. In reality, Europe is even now entering another chapter in its long history of violent struggle. The enemy can’t be wished or talked away. And what’s at stake isn’t just sovereignty of one or two nations but modern democratic civilization.Nearly 30 years ago, in 1978, Charles Emmanuel Dufourcq, the great historian of Medieval European Islam, was concerned (even then) that historical and cultural revisionism might precipitate a recurrence of

Bruce Bawer’s independent research and keen, unflinching observations put flesh—much like the tortured flesh of the recently murdered Parisian Jew Ilan Halimi—on the bones of Bat Ye’or’s Eurabia. Bawer’s informed and gripping narrative makes clear the disturbing unwillingness of Muslim immigrants en bloc to accept foundational Western principles of equality, and integrate peacefully into their host societies. While Europe Slept demonstrates that continued denial of any Islamic etiology for the major problems confronting Western Europe begets more Islam as the “solution,” and accelerates the hemi-continent’s apparently inevitable trajectory towards Lebanonization, and/or complete Islamization, with implementation of the Shari’a.
[*Note on jizya : Under the Shari’a (Islamic Law) regulations, either the non-Muslim infidels must convert to Islam, or they pay the blood ransom jizya—classically, in a humiliating public ceremony which often involved blows to the head or neck—and their life and belongings are protected. I'm reading "While Europe Slept" at the moment. It is excellent, and also a very easy and enjoyable read, which Bat Y'eor and Fallaci are not. I came across Bruce Bawer a few years ago as the author of an article called: Tolerating Intolerance: The Challenge of Fundamentalist Islam in Western Europe, and I remember hoping at the time that he would develop some of this article's themes more fully.
My only criticism is that Bawer does not make enough of a distinction between the views of the mainstream media and those of ordinary people. In the UK there is a difference between the line taken by the BBC and The Guardian and the views of ordinary people, better represented by The Sun and the Mail, or indeed The Telegraph
This observation ought to lay to rest, once and for all, the myth that Christian and Islamic fundamentalism are equivalent. It ought to shame people out of this idiotic and immoral delusion. Then again, where there's no sense there's no feeling.

No historian of the Islamic world has been more influential in his enthusiasm, and in that of his acolytes, for the Iraq-the-Light-Unto-the-Muslim-Nations Project in Iraq than Bernard Lewis. It was he who predicted in 2002 that the liberation of Baghdad would make the celebrations that had already taken place (and been forgotten by now) in Kabul "look like a funeral procession." It was Lewis who, along with that good-hearted naif James Woolsey, still flogging his "it's-the-Wahhabis" wares even at assorted expensive Renaissance Weekends, proposed in The Wall Street Journal that a Hashemite monarch might be set upon the throne of Iraq, as if it were plausible to imagine that the Shi'a would accept a Sunni monarch after all that they had endured and no longer needed to. Yet this implausilbe idea received Lewis's name (even if, as he now claims, Woolsey did the writing), and was thus to be taken seriously. Of course what was really being presented was a political advertisement for Prince Hassan, friend, patron, and host of Bernard Lewis (a picture of Lewis sitting Lawrentian-style with Arabs, a kind of photographic guarantee of his being accepted and comprehended by the real Arabs, the Hashemites -- take that, John Esposito (but are the espositos of this world worth bothering with? would Snouck Hurgronje or Schacht have given Esposito the time of day?), though without naming him.
Above Charles-Emmanuel Dufourcq, who has been mentioned repeatedly at JihadWatch, is aptly quoted from. In 2004, Lewis was asked what he thought of the work of, whether he had ever heard of, Charles-Emmanuel Dufourcq. "No," he replied. He never had.
This is the most disconcerting article I have read. How was it that our political elite allowed this to happen?

Bawer's book sounds like a must-read. Somehow we have got the get the public to put all the pieces of the "Islam problem" puzzle together so that they can see the pattern.
-Demographic jihad, involving deliberately high birth rates (which nearly always outstrips that of other ethnic populations within any given country where both Muslims and non-Muslims exist), and mass migration to non-Muslim lands for the purpose of setting up Islamic culture and imposing laws bit-by-bit. Exploitation of internal "culture wars" in order to weaken resistance to Islam, e.g., attack U.S. foreign policy, western imperialism, etc. Use social segregation (8:73), e.g., enclaves, Muslim schools, forbidding marriages with non-Muslims, isolation and shielding of the Muslim females from interaction with the non-Muslims, observances of halal/haram laws, etc.

This was attributed to Mohammad, but I haven't come across it yet in searching Sahih Bukhari or Sahih Muslim collections. This is obviously one of the most important statements attributed to Mohammad. If anyone can provide the original source, this would be most appreciated.

Bawer is one of the rare jihad watchers (using that term in the widest sense) who does not make that knee-jerk distinction. It is an unmerited distinction. Just as we rightfully demand that so-called "moderate Muslims" prove themselves by standing up and doing something about the problem of Islam, so too should we demand that this mythological ordinary Western person who, unlike the "elites" and the "mainstream media", is naturally predisposed to agreeing with us Jihad Watchers -- so too should we demand that this supposed majority of ordinary people stand up and exert their democratic power.
So far, I see no signs that such a mythological beast exists in numbers larger than very small and marginalized minorities, scattered here and there among a few odd blue scarfs at a lecture hall here or a pathetic protest there, or haunting the interstices of an Internet site over there. At the very least, if they do exist in such large numbers as jihad watchers often so proudly assert, those large numbers have been behaving very passively for the last few years.

I was at the pro-Denmark rally this Saturday just past. Most of the signage dealt with freedom of speech, but one actually was bold enough to state the obvious: Deport radical Muslims.
Remove the radical Immans. Thats the first step. maybe some Muslims will follow. Remove the radical Muslims? Yes--maybe, though, this will not work, who judges this? Why not remove all illegal immigrants, all radical muslims and all radical immans. The problem is the radical left, ACLU types will protest each move in each Western country. Hugh speaks about the removal of Muslims vis-a-vis the historical precendent of post war removal of Germans from a single country in Eastern Europe. A country that was destroyed, maimed and killed by the Nazis . . . with the Sudetan Germans probably involved. This was a single country in a specific historical period. How is this related to today? Each and every single Western country would have to agree. In Europe, dissention say from Spain would produce an Islamic Spain as all Muslims would turn to that Western Country. What if Cannada accepted our Muslims? Does this solve the problem.
I'm not sure what the solution is. These radical immans will leave, crying, chained with their 12 kids in tow, making the BBC reporters cry, provoking the greatest liberal march of all time. One obvious. Stop all legal and illegal immigration. Stop all payments to Muslim immigrants, ban the burka, force the Immans to speak in the native tongue of the country, infiltrate the Mosques with spies, immediately deports hooligans. Act up . . . go to lebanon without your passport. No reconciliation of families: if a hard working Muslim wants to bring over Mom, Dad and 4 wives and 32 kids--no he can't--but he's most welcome to leave. In short make this foreign precense feel very foreign. This is 'doable.' Sadly, it will take a nuclear bomb to get the West to follow the Benes plan. But one can add restrictions, making them pine for the old country.

Obviously, the immigration authorities would have to have evidence to support ordering people out of the country. I don't think it would be that hard to establish reasonable criteria that's legally sound within the current parameters of the immigration act. And yes, I know that the usual suspects will continue pleading the case of reprehensible people, but I don't think the general public are as gullible and politicians seen to be making it easy for dangerous persons to remain in the country will see their political careers shortened very quickly.
Bruce Bawer's While Europe Slept -- How Radical Islam Is Destroying The West From Within is perhaps the best book I have ever read about Islam. I'm tempted to buy it for everyone I know, because I think that this book, perhaps more than any other published so far, will be effective at sounding the alert about Islam's totalitarian threat to the West.
I'm about 150 pages into the 236-page book, and find it a helluva page-turner. Bawer describes his experiences living in Europe in several countries, and takes you inside the European press, mindset and social order, while showing in vivid detail the Islamization of Europe, how it's happening, including fascinating facts about the Islamized suburbs of European cities -- the lifeways of those suburbs and the nature of their ties to the home countries of the immigrants. Anyone who cares about the West and reads this should become outraged, horrified, angry, determined.
Bawer is gay, and in reading him, I have the feeling that, partly because of that, he is intensely driven to see with brilliant incisiveness into what is happening with Islam in Europe. And somewhat as most of the U.S. population at one time would only trust a conservative (Nixon) to start a relationship between the U.S. and Communist China, the MSM might only trust someone like Bawer, who seems in some ways liberal, to provide such a devastatingly detailed and vivid indictment of how Islam currently manifests in Europe and where Islam is going there. Without at all descending into MSM relativism, Bawer evinces in his thinking a certain kind of MSM liberal empathy that goes the extra mile to recognize the strong points of many sides in many debates. This is giving me ideas. I think gay men and lesbians might be extremely effective in the battle against Islamisation of the west.
The problem with pointing out Islam's sexism is that you get too many muslim women denying that there is a problem. Also, muliculturalism has too much tolerance for sexist 'cultural' practices.
Gay people, on the other hand, do not come as pro-islam spokespeople - they simply can't (well, one idiot tried on this site recently, but he wouldn't last a minute if he came out in a mosque).
Also, the MSM, the politically liberal, left-wing and tolerant are usually pro-gay. Although they claim to not be anti-semites, they are often openly anti-zionist. But they seldom come as anti-gay. So they would actually listen to gay anti-islamists.
Now I'll be looking for an angle on this topic to approach my gay friends with. The problem with introducing them to this site is that there are often posts that would drive them away. Does anyone know of some pro-gay anti-islamism sites I could use?
