Jail imam: "Allah said that the believers are compassionate with each other. And they are hard against kufr"

Kufr is unbelief. I suspect that the transcript is faulty in this particular, as in the quote in the headline Abdul-Jalil is referring to Qur'an 48:29, "Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. And those with him are hard against the disbelievers and merciful among themselves." The Arabic in this case is very clear: "al-kuffari" is unbelievers (or disbelievers), but not unbelief. This is not a small point, since to be hard (or ruthless) to unbelievers could take very different forms from harshness to unbelief.

In any case, LGF has a full transcript of the talk given by Umar Abdul-Jalil at the MSA West Zone Conference, held April 15-17, 2005 in Tucson, Arizona. This is the talk that got him suspended (but not fired) from his New York prison system job. He claims his remaks have been taken out of context. Well, now you have the whole thing. Judge for yourself.

I like Islam because the bllsht quotient is so high and they're delusionally fervent about the 7th century ravings of a false prophet. It's amusing to see fools under a stage hypnotist's spell. Islam would be more amusing if it wasn't becoming a menace due to control of oil, demographic Jihad in Europe and it's primal urge for nuclear weapons

“Islaam is dominant and is not dominated over.” So say the Muhammadans

Ronin:

What did you find out about the Crusader statue? I WANT ONE!

Well, now you have the whole thing. Judge for yourself.

It's very disconnected. This is a strange consciousness. This speech is a "steam of consciousness". There is really very little attempt even to construct a coherent apologia. It is more a disconnected rambling with side-issues flaring up here and there as they present themselves to the consciousness of the speaker.

The Saudi "princess" quoted in an earlier thread is coherent (albeit determined to see what she wants to see) but this speaker is different. There's modish "intellectual" cant mixed in - "who is defining or controlling the dialogue" - heard, remembered, filed away - but this seems to me to be a very primitive consciousness. What it wants is an end to bothersome questions - "The beauty of Islam is we don't really have to ask certain questions because the answer is already provided"; what is wants is a retreat from responsibility into the womb of the tribe - "that cancer that has engulfed the human being is ... individualism"; what it wants, above all, is an excuse to hate the surrounding society.

But it's the sheer quality of disconnectedness that impresses me.

What are the roots that clutch, what branches grow
Out of this stony rubbish?

"... This is not a small point ..."

Kufr, schmufr, heads will roll.

Ronin and CGW,
The comment on the Crusader statue has piqued my interest as well. Please supply info on item and availability
Thanks

This Imam is a liar and a fraud who never drifted far from his Black Panther roots. In his speech he states that "One of the things that Islam gave to the world is the term 'triage.'
From dictionary.com: "Triage...French, from trier, to sort, from Old French."
He is trying to attribute things to Islam which Islam had nothing to do with, to give Muslims a false image and a false history. And he doesn't speak French I'll wager, or he would not attempt to pass off such a bold faced lie as the truth.
He goes on to say: "We have to stop allowing as the imam said to be reactionary, the Zionists of the media to dictate what Islam is to us."
"We have to do what Allah has commanded us. Allah commanded us in the Koran, Allah said that the believers are compassionate with each other. And they are hard against kufr. They are compassionate with each other and they are hard against kufr."

I hope the taxpayers of New York demand his immediate termination.

I'm going to take on the contrarian position here.

Abdul-Jali's claim that he was taken "out of context" immediately flagged a warning light for me, but I read nothing in his comments that in themselves would to my mind warrant his suspension or dismissal.

Some (most) of his views are way off the mark, I believe, but that's incidental. We play into the hands of our detractors if we kneejerk and fail to clearly differentiate between this kind of thing and genuine extremism.

Stefan Kanfer in City Journal has a good piece on the subject:

There is the aforementioned comment about how the Jews run the media, and also the comment that President Bush is "the worlds' biggest terrorist".

I'm no fan of Bush, but he is no terrorist. To have a NYC government representative making speeches like that is worse than playing Solitaire [apparently cause for immediate termination] in my opinion.

What I find interesting in what he said (well, none of it was interesting, but relatively speaking) are the numerous references Muslims as victims of some vague conspiracy, as if they are the ones who live in terror of the infidel:

one of the major problems that impacts us pre and post 9/11, because those who hated Islam hated Islam before the WTC went down, let's be clear on that. Those who hated the Muslim, they hated us before that.
and
At 7:30 this morning in Phoenix, AZ (UI few words). They just opened up 2 new jails and they literally walked 2600 inmates into these 2 jails. I don't know what's going on in Phoenix but what was startling to me is that they actually walked them in handcuffs in pink boxers and pink shoes. I don't know what's happening in Phoenix. I couldn't figure that one out; I really couldn't figure that one out.
and
It's easy to become incarcerated. Imam Zaid was speaking about the draconian Rockefeller drug laws in New York State. That was personal for me because I know, because having been the victim of that, that law, and having served 17 years of my life in New York state prison in Attica, in those type places.
and
Because we have been criminalized, we know it's different, we know what the facts really our. We have terrorists defining who the terrorist is, but because they have the weight of legitimacy they get away with it.
and
we would not even return the greeting because of a non-Muslim, for fear that a non-Muslim is gonna know that we are a Muslim.

Also, the omnipresent distinction between Muslim and infidel. Whenever he says "us", he is not talking about Americans, or New Yorkers, he means Muslims. His identity, his community, his loyalty, are clear.

And of course, the triumphalism of Islam, about how it will transform the US, that Allah chose the Muslims as the sole arbiters of right and wrong.

The beauty of Islam is we don't really have to ask certain questions because the answer is already provided. Allah said, that you are the best people evolved for the good of mankind. For the good of mankind; that's the role, that's our mission. Allah created us with that mission. Why? Because we enjoy life, we forbid evil and we believe in Allah.
and
Allah is not the God of the Muslims ... Allah is the God of Mankind.
and
the Koran addresses the problems today, tomorrow and a thousand years from now.
and
We have the solution to the problem that impacts society. We have the solution to the problem that impacts the world.
and
There is nothing better than being a Muslim. There is no being better than Islam. Never, not any of them.

Prison clerics are given a great deal of trust, to enter prisons and interact with the prisoners in private. We as a society have an expectation that those interactions will not be harmful to society at large.

As a prison cleric, he should be trying to bring the prisoners back into the fold of society, not indocrinating them with a belief that society is out to get them, and the only defense is to embrace a religion of violence, a religion that justifies a sense of superiority over secular society.

Prisoners would end up more violent, more paranoid, more cut off from society after listening to this cleric.

Mr. Spencer wrote: "Kufr is unbelief. Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if abdul-jalil knows less arabic than he tries to let on. It looks to me like he is intentionally and clearly using the word "kufr" to mean unbelievers of islam. Which is the way we American unbelievers and non-arabic speakers use it (as an alternate English spelling of kuffar). I doubt that he actually speaks arabic fluently; he merely sprinkles in arabic words to impress, and probably reads the koran in translation, rather than in (ancient dialect)arabic. That is my speculation, anyway, fwiw of course.

But he has internalized the central hate-the-unbeliever message of islam. Congratulations to abdul-jalil!

LOL Patriot, next thing having those pink boxers and shoes once they're out again will be sign of toughness...

special_guest:

Abdul-Jalil's "Jewish media" fixation is shared by many non-Muslims on the hard, and not so hard, Left. That he both feels victimised and has something of a superiority complex is clear for all to see. But believing that one's religion represent the best belief system around, or even that its adherents represent the best that humanity has to offer -- neither of these are tantamount to sedition.

Whether he meant kufr or kuffari is significant. He does appear to have been paraphrasing Qur'an 48:29, but it is not clear how he understands it.

Of course, it may be the case that his beliefs actually go significantly further than those expressed here. It may be that other things he has said or done in the past have concerned his bosses and that within that context there really are grounds for concern. But we don't have that information.

It's funny to read of a Muslim leader complaining about draconian drug laws, and citing them as evidence of anti-Muslim bias. After all, Muslim-dominated countries have far harsher drug laws: Our poor oppressed prison inmates would be dead if they had been convicted under Sharia law.

"hard against the disbelievers and merciful among themselves."

Maybe that means that Muslims should punish "infidel" drug dealers but pardon Muslim criminals.
