This article gives the impression that resentments fueled in prison give rise to jihadist sentiments. And I have no doubt that that's true. But there is more involved as well. Why did Abdullah grant pardons to Zarqawi and other jihadists? What ideological conditions prevail outside the prison walls that lead people to be disposed to adopt the jihad ideology once inside them? To what extent does Abdullah himself share the overall goals of the jihad movement, even while perhaps eschewing their methods in whole or part? "Prison riots show al-Qaida sympathy," from AP, :
AMMAN, Jordan — Inmates rioted at three Jordanian prisons Wednesday over the fate of two convicted al-Qaida killers and a would-be suicide bomber, raising new concern about increasing sympathy for the network in Mideast prisons.The prisoners took a high-ranking official hostage and injured several other police before the 14-hour standoff ended without major bloodshed.
Jordan later announced that it had arrested two Iraqi men and a would-be Libyan suicide bomber who belonged to al-Qaida and plotted an attack on an unspecified “vital civilian facility” in the capital, Amman.
While no details were given to link the riots and the arrests, they indicated Osama bin Laden’s network might be finding fertile recruiting grounds in pro-U.S. Jordan and elsewhere in the region....
The prison flare-ups indicated wide support, particularly in Jordanian jails, among detainees for al-Qaida and other militant groups.
“Prisons sometimes seem to be centers of attracting and recruiting terrorists, not for punishing them,” said Mustafa Alani, director of security and terrorism studies at the Gulf Research Center in Dubai.
“The solution is to understand that prisons alone are not enough.”...
King Abdullah II — who must endorse any execution — has granted amnesties to militants in the past, including al-Zarqawi, who was released from prison in 1999 and went on to train with bin Laden in Afghanistan.
Alani said prisons have been in part responsible for radicalizing many detainees and the problem was compounded by human rights violations, including torture.
“The prisons have become schools,” he said. “Al-Zarqawi’s hard-line views were formed in a Jordanian prison.”
Limited space also means many prisoners with extremist views are held together, allowing the chance to organize, Alani said.
Of course prisons become schools. They're just now realizing that? Piffle we've known that here in the US for years.
Jordan's only real solution is to execute them all. Not that they will. It's a very sticky problem. Do you offend everyone and execute them or let them go when their sentence is up knowing full well they will more than likely be killing people asap?
One of the biggest problems with is-lame is the people have no hope outside of becoming a martyr. Their religion beats the joy out of every area of their lives. How depressing.

Jordan is too cheap to do it but put the Jihadist prisoners in solitary confinement so they can't build Jihad study and prayer groups. Don't let them have Korans or prayer mats
Several things could be done in prisons.
The first is to carefully segregate the Muslim prisoners so that they are less able to conduct Da'wa, and can talk only to each other. If it is clear that they are intimidating non-Muslims, as has been suggested goes on in French prisons, where those who convert or "revert" among the 30% of the prisoners who are not Muslim do so in order to fit in, to get along, to not be subject to Muslim harassment and worse, then the state owes those non-Muslim prisoners protection, and also should be working to limit the number of conversions. On what grounds? On the grounds that Islam is itself inimical to the interests of Infidels, as Infidels define that interest, and that the freedom to propagandize for Islam should be regarded in the same way that one would have regarded, in 1942, those making the caes in the Western world for Nazism and the Aryan Herrenvolk.
The second is to include, as part of the work of missionaries, audience-specific information about Islam. Do not simply present Christianity as the alternative, the other white meat. Rather, let prisoners know, in detail, of the forbidding of so many things in Islam. Begin with the Bamiyan Buddhas, and ask "why were they destroyed?" and then quote chapter and verse from Qaradawi, on statues (and his quotation from Muhammad, on not entering a house that contained either dogs or statues). Go from there to depictions in paint, and then to Muslim opposition to music (mention what the Taliban did to wedding-singers, or how it destroyed radios; mention the killing of Rai singers in Algeria by the most immoderate of Muslims). To counter the Muslim targetting of black prisoners, in England and France and America, offer the details of the Arab slave trade, that began earlier, that ended later (where it did end, and only under Western pressure), with slavery itself, permanently recognized by the Qur'an and therefore permanently part of Islam (for the example of Muhammad, uswa hasana, al-insan al-kamil, is a Model for man, and Muhammad not only owned slaves, but in his military conquests seized others, and set out by his example rules not for abolishing slavery, but for regulating the institution).
If the Pentagon, or the other agencies of the American government, cannot figure out how to recognize, and name, Da'wa (the Call to Islam) as a threat to Infidels, that is becuase they have, by insisting on this misleading phrase "war on terror," have limited their response. If it is not a "war on terror" but a war to defend the entire non-Muslim world from the "Jihad that some -- not all (go ahead, just pretend) -- Muslims believe in, a Jihad to spread Islam despite the laws, customs, beliefs of others who do not wish to have it imposed on them," that is if it is properly described, then the instrument of Jihad known as Da'wa will be seen in a new light, and only then can appropriate measures be taken.
Meanwhile, watch for signs of psychological disarray anywhere. For that kind of thing can lead to susceptibility to the siren-song of Muslim missionaries. In prison, and without.

It's not just in physical jails where al-Qaida sympathies are a problem... It's in the entire jail of dar al Islam where al-Qaida sympathies are a problem... al-Qaida is Islam in its "purest" manifestation. When Westerners (and Musims) finally face this dark ominous FACT, perhaps we'll make some progress.
Maybe off topic but... perhaps we should stop worrying so much about dividing the Muslim world into "sects" even if this is true. So often I hear the notion expressed that al-Qaida is a Sunni organization -- one which could never make common cause with the likes of the Shiites in Iran --
For our purposes as Christians, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, Atheists and Agnostics etc. does it really matter? Is there ANY real qualitative difference between the nazi-like totalitarianism of the Shiite Iranians, or that of Sunni Saudi Arabians for us? These are the epicenters of the two main branches of Islam -- these are the best examples of the purest manifestations of those two branches -- of the respective "visions" which these two dominating "sects" envision for the "pure" society -- the "Islamic" society -- for God's divine will on earth -- the way God wants us all to live...
Gradually it seems that the distinction between this sect or that of Islam will, of necessity, become immaterial... Islam in all its manifestations appears to be mortally dangerous to our continued well being.
Do we care whether it's arsenic or strychnine spread on our food in the supermarket which causes our demise?
Do we die a less miserable death if we are exposed to radiation from gamma rays emitted from a uranium laced dirty bomb, or X-rays emitted from strontium-90 laced dirty bomb?
Is our suffering less horrific if we drown from fluid and blood in our lungs and systemic shock from blood seeping out of every orifice because of ebola virus unleashed in a subway in NY -- or because our immune system collapses after exposure to small-pox circulation in a trans-Atlantic plane ride?
Does it come as any suprise that criminals are attracted to Islam? The scum of the world are attracted to Islam, just like they were attracted to Nazism and Communism, and the best place to find scum is prison. I was watching a History Channel documentary on Ghenkis Khan and the Mongols the other day. A lot of Mongols converted to Islam. Did this mean that they abandoned their barbarism like the Vikings did when they converted to Christianity? Well, no. They converted to Islam, it seems, because it enshrined their barbaric values, and kept on marauding and pillaging.

So prisons in Jordan are exactly like prisons in the United States. In the Federal Prison system there are Muslim chaplains (almost exclusively Wahabhi) who openly promote Islamic solidarity and dawa. Muslim prisoners get special priviledges that are denied to every other prisoner, thus encouraging more inmates to embrace Islam to enjoy these priviledges.
They get special Halal meat instead of normal prison fare. They can dress in comfortable Kirta/pajama or other "Islamic dress" insted of the blue or khaki prison jumpsuit or work clothes. They get five breaks each day to make salat and time for "fellowship" after each prayer time. While other inmates may be on work detail, the Muslims get time for daily Arabic classes that are open to Muslims only. Even when on "paid" work detail, they still accrue payment points while praying or in class. Christian prisoners are limited to religious practice only on Sunday or Holy Days and only in the prison chapel while the Muslims are able to enjoy religious accommodation everywere, all the time.
Observing this, it is surprising that there are any prisoners who aren't Muslim. And all this is being done to a captive audience by the US government.
Since Islam is the "perfect" mind prison, literal jails are the ideal space for promoting the cult.
When it started out, its methods were those of a neighborhood gang and, as it prospered from lawless looting and rapine, Islam metastasized into the model for every standard mafia family. Thus the incarcerated criminals need only change their 'colors', not their behavior, when they sign up for the 'hood' of the Muslim Brother.
(Of course there is the problem of the Caliphate versus the Imam-ate split, the Sunnis versus Shi'ites, but the Bloods and The Crips give this schism a feeling of 'street cred'.)
As in literal penitentiaries-
If you force people to behave unnaturally, they go mad.
If you force people to all act the same way (no matter what that way is), they go mad.
If you force people to repeat rituals too often (5 times a days seems to be sufficient), they go mad.
Islam allows this self-made insanity to gain some release by directing its inward rage (that is really against the unnaturalness of Islam, itself) outward. At the infidel.
Who then become the substitute target for the real source of their frustration and rage: Islam's joyless dictatorship.
Their massive denial about the real root of their rage (the anti-natural rules of the cult of the pedophile "prophet"*) and the nervous overload that comes from squashing your soul into a 7th century cage demands some emotional/physical outburst.
Because of their lifelong training in "submission", and supressing their real feelings and desires, Muslims find it almost impossible to address the truth of their spiritual strangulation and existential frustration, so they strike the Koranically-"permitted" targets: .
The healthy energy of skepticism, warped and deflected from what it should naturally strike at- the Koran's irrational precepts- ends up as a malignant sadism turned inside out.
The prison and the "religion" of Islam become parallel pressure cookers for the spirit.
A recipe for explosive irrationality.
The world today is its demonstration.
Keeping these symbiotic insanities from feeding one another needs to be part of our plan to defuse the recruiting of future jihadists in our midst.
No practice of any gangsterism should be permitted in prison, whether they call themselves 'The Vice Lords' or 'The Army of Allah'.
Solitary confinement and enforced meditation, with no propaganda books allowed, would make more sense.
Let them think for themselves, for once.
Even if it takes the rest of their lives to learn how.
