Pakistan report

Here are two stories that reveal how "fighting insurgents" while ignoring Islamization is a losing strategy, even in Pakistan. The first story, "Up to 30 Islamist rebels killed in Pakistan" is from Reuters.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan - Up to 30 foreign militants and their local supporters were killed in an air and ground attack by Pakistani security forces in a tribal region near the Afghan border, officials said on Saturday.

Military spokesman Major-General Shaukat Sultan said the overnight attack in the North Waziristan tribal region was ordered after intelligence reports suggested that militants were gathered in a compound along with a huge cache of arms, ammunition and explosives...

More than 120 pro-Taliban militants have been killed in North Waziristan since guerillas attacked government forces and buildings last week in revenge for a March 1 attack that killed 45 of their comrades. Five troops were killed in those clashes...

Meanwhile down in South Waziristan, the Pakistan Daily Times trumpets, "Clerics announce Sharia in S Waziristan," with thanks to Jeffrey Imm.

WANA: Tribal clerics announced the enforcement of Sharia (Islamic law) in South Waziristan on Friday, saying that feuds and tribal enmities would now be resolved through Islamic laws instead of the tribal jirga.

Eyewitnesses and tribal elders told Daily Times that the announcement was made during Friday prayer sermons in Wana and other towns of South Waziristan. “We are glad to announce that an Islamic judge will decide cases from now on and not the jirga,” a cleric in Wana was quoted as announcing. The announcement was made following letters from local Taliban commanders to all prayer leaders asking them to enforce Sharia here, a tribal cleric said. “We were under great pressure from the commanders to announce the enforcement of Sharia in Waziristan,” he said.

He said that the announcement effectively “buried” the role of tribal elders, vesting “hand-picked clerics” with absolute power. This will “strengthen the Taliban’s influence in the area”, the cleric said...

As long as muslim Pakistani soldiers are getting killed while killing pro-Taliban muslim militants, it's a win-win situation no matter how you look at it.

Looks to be another episode of "Allah Knows Best." Nothing like a transfer of power from tribal leaders to the religious zealots. Just another example of Islam is to dominate not be dominated.

That might actually be an improvement, to go from an unwritten barbaric code of tribal laws to a written barbaric code of laws with 1400 years. In a couple of centuries they might discover pottery-making.

feuds and tribal enmities would now be resolved through Islamic laws instead of the tribal jirga.

Wait, I'm getting lost here, are we supposed to hope that the tribal jirgas (who hate us because we are subhuman infidels), or Sharia (which institutionalizes our status as subhuman infidels) wins in Waziristan? Geopolitics can be so complicated sometimes.

How about Pakistan troops continuing to destroy tribal centers until the region is in peace and then I will give some credence that Pakistan is fighting terror instead of just trying to survive attacks on the Pakistan government.

The Texican.
Freedom, the only choice at any cost.

To kill a snake you cut off its head. We need to use the all the tools we have in the US and abroad to stop the terroriam by agency formented by the clerics, Imams, and ayatollahs.

For a good read about village life in Pakistan, check out Tenacious Devotion, Conquest of a Purdah Belle by Isabel P. Ball. It really shines the light on life under the tribal elders, who were bad enough. The Islamists are just the icing on the case for this backward society. I ordered it from amazon.com, but I believe that you can get used copies elsewhere.

It appears that we have an irreconcilable dispute going on. We must solve this problem peacefully, at all costs. Let's refer this to the UN, or possibly the Hague. Maybe we could send Jesse Jackson to mediate.

the mullahs, immans and their talking heads... have a wish list, and l do not assume that power will be transferred over easily. they say one thing, and expect people to role over...they must be in mullah dreamland!

"Tiny Minority of Extremists Report"

Too arcane?

The military dictatorship there has an impossible balancing act--much of the military and intelligence agency is heavily Islamist. It would not take much for that government to fall. We may not have to wait for Iran to build a bomb to be facing a radical Islamist state with nukes.

But what the heck is our excuse? Islamists in this country need to be charged with hate speech when they call for violence. Period.

I rant a bit about the UNC Chapel Hill attack that apparently was done by an SUV!

And about the Oklahoma bomber--no not McVeigh, the little student who tried to bomb a football game but lost his head (literally).

And worst of all, about the dead and wounded soldiers at the hands of that pig scum Sgt. Akbar in Kuwait right before the invasion: did you know that they have been denied Purple Hearts?

Maybe John Kerry can throw them some...

All the best,

I'm not sure if this post is a mortal or venial sin committed against the commandments of the Krazy Komments, but it appears that MSM Hell may have frozen over, or at least there is a little chill in the MSM air, when the San Franciso Chronicle, no less, publishes this feel good story from Iraq, originally authored by a Chronicle staff writer no less. I may have to take back some of my comments form the Diana West thread from yesterday's DW board.

U.S. soldiers connect with residents in small Iraqi town

The next day, Capt. Ben Simms goes to Diyara for his weekly meeting with the local imam.

The imam, a Sunni, is a gentle man in his 30s. Tall and balding with a full, short beard and kind eyes, he laughs easily. But he prefers not to be identified. He serves Arabic cola to the American soldiers who take off their heavy body armor and helmets in the imam's sparely decorated house. They lean their rifles against the wall.

The main topic of discussion is, as usual, water. Diyara is at the hind end of a canal system, which means the water is nearly stagnant by the time it gets here. The salinity in the water is hard to filter out, said Capt. Keith Burns, who heads the Army's civil affairs unit in the area.

Simms tells the imam that the U.S. Army is finalizing a contract to build a water pumping station in the town, so the people will finally get better, fresher water to their homes.

"The people here have had bad water even in the Saddam regime," the imam said through an interpreter. "People have been dreaming about it. This will be a good thing for them."

The imam likes that the Americans get things done. He's concerned that these kinds of projects will go away once the people have to rely on the bureaucracy in Baghdad.

The imam says that Sunnis and Shiites get along here. The town is largely Sunni, but he says he has members of both sects in his mosque. Reportedly, Sunnis and Shiites guarded each others mosques during the bloody sectarian violence that swept parts of the country in the aftermath of the Shiite mosque bombing in Samarra last month.

"The people who make violence do not fight for religious reasons," said the imam. "They do it for the money. They are cowards because they don't fight face to face. They don't care who they hurt."

After about 45 minutes with the imam, the soldiers say goodbye. Outside, Iraqi kids swarm the soldiers, seeking sweets, money, pens, sunglasses.

They literally hang off of Sgt. 1st Class Michael Taylor's arms and legs after he produced a whole bag of candy.

"The children know who are the fighters and who are the civil affairs soldiers," the imam said, laughing.

Just remember that Pakistan has nukes. There cannot be more danger than not disarming them before toppling them. Iran and Pakistan, both must be taken care of pretty soon.

The scary thing about Pakistan is that if the Islamic facist manage to take control of the country they are going to have nukes ready to fly.

Part of the 'long war on terror'is because US admin. lets Pakistan get away with practically everything, including harboring Bin Laden. If US was serious about taking decisive steps to stop terror, Pakistan should have been placed on notice right after 9/11. Remember, ISI provided the logistical support for Taliban and Pakistan Government recognized Taliban as a legitimaye govt. Then, Sheikh Omar wires a huge sum just before 9/11. The same Sheikh Omar who was in Indian jail and was released in a hostage exchange, after an Indian Airline flight was hijacked to Khandar, from Karachi (thanks to ISI).
Even today, Bin Laden enjoys safe haven in Pakistan. I don't see why Pakistan cannot be put on notice to hand over Bin Laden, or US forces will.

And then, the 'war on terror' (whatever thatis suppose to mean) won't be so 'long'.

Cruzado; Maybe in a couple hundred years, they'll discover toilet tissue.

The United States is partially responsible for the jihad generation. In the 1980s, rather than directly confront the Soviets and liberate Afghanistan, the United States recruited Arab mujahideen to do our bidding and fighting for us. After the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan, the jihadis became emboldened by this geo-political victory, it was only a matter of time before they would turn their backs against their Western patron.

We punished India for its close ties to the Soviet Union and leading the non-Alligned nations, anyone back then who wasn't pro-American must have been a communist sympathizer. We have finally realized that a greater relationship with democratic India is in order. But our support of Pakistan dates back to the Cold War, however, Pakistan is a much different nation than it was at the height of Soviet-American tensions, now we still give support to this undemocratic nation, knowing that democracy woud ensure an Islamist majority that would be hostile to Western interests.

We are responsible for creating our own mess.

You're wrong pikachu.

"We" didn't create the mess.

The problem is not past US foreign policy.

The problem is an imperialist, supremacist political ideology pretending to be a religion.

That is the source of the problem.

By the same cankered illogic we created the "mess" of the Cold War by allying with Stalin to defeat Hitler. It's a malevolent and false construct. Islam is responsible for Islam's heinousness.

Pikachu Sez: "The United States is partially responsible for the jihad generation."

Omvi says: "We" didn't create the mess."

jsla sez: It's a malevolent and false construct. Islam is responsible for Islam's heinousness.

Both Omni and jsla are right.

It was Allah who created the mess. Allah created all the messes. Not only that, he did it intentionally, way back when he had the Pen of Destiny write all that future stuff on the Memorial Tablet. Predestination they call it. Where would we be without it. Allah is just soooo wise. He created Islam to make further messes in his name. As the Lord of Messes, Allah has lots of little mess makers in his employ. They are called mullahs, imams, ayatolahs and grande ayatollahs. They are loosely called 'clerics', but we know them by their real name, 'jihadist', or sometimes The Sons of Allah. These are the favorites of Allah because they are able to make a mess of about everything they try. He even made a messy paradise for those who mess up enough.
So dont go blaming the US gov for any messes. Allah can create lots of them without infidel help...

I wish the career beaurocrats at the state department were 1/2 as smart as most of the people who post here. Heck, I'd settle for them being just smart enough to read some of these post, plageurize them and submit them as policy papers. How can so many know so little about so much yet keep their jobs?

The danish people are appologizing for offending muslim sensibilities...

Adela, I read your comment and my initial reaction was, oh no!, don't tell me the Danes apologized... but then I read the apology and couldn't help chuckling! Great one!

The same Sheikh Omar who was in Indian jail and was released in a hostage exchange, after an Indian Airline flight was hijacked to Khandar, from Karachi (thanks to ISI). Posted by: Alert

Make Karachi Kathmandu. The plane was a Kathmandu-Delhi flight, which the hijackers wanted to steer to Pakistan. Didn't get landing rights, they went on to Dubai, and from there to Kandahar. Which was where India dutifully turned in 5 terrorists (despite one of the passengers being murdered), and got back the plane.

The US should have declared war on Afghanistan AND Pakistan after 9/11. Then no dancing around this ally business.

the mullahs, immans and their talking heads...

These may not be a good choice of words when talking of mooslems, I envisioned a decapitated hostage's head being used as a puppet to spew forth the filth that comes from a mooslems mouth.

The Paki's use smoke and mirror techniques to make it appear as though they fight against terrorism just to stay in the friendly embraces of the west.

Interesting argument:

"...the United States recruited Arab mujahideen to do our bidding and fighting for us..."

Of course not.

It is the duty of every Muhammedan to come to the aid of his fellow believers when attacked. The US has merely provided, too generously, weapons and perhaps also money to the mudjahiddin. Afraid of the assumed hegemony of the Soviet empire this was probably misguided, in hindsight we can say that it would have been better to keep out of that conflict altogether.

Would it have stopped the global Jihad and the attacks on 9/11 etc? Of course not.

Muhammedans have 'grievances' and global aspirations, the Jihad is permanent and relentless since 1400 years...

Further to my posting above I would hasten to add that OBL's Al Quaeda could not even be pacified by Clinton's misguided bombing
of Serbia...

Adela -- That link, and the message therein is GREAT! GREAT

Since 97% of the Pakistian people are moslim that Islam play than major role in it polical parties and life. When the somewhat prowest Pakistan People Party have than Islamist culture and belief built into it, it the PPP didnot have than Islamist core element it wouldnot have became than big polical party it has become. All the political parties in Pakistian have than Islamist core element to them.

The people in the State Department have abetter plan on how to occup Iraq than the military did and Bush reject the State Department plan. It was the hightly succful State Department plan for occup Germany and Japon that change these counties not the military plan.
