ALEXANDRIA, Virginia (CNN) -- Had Zacarias Moussaoui only told the truth after his arrest a month before the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the lives of Americans could have been saved, a prosecutor told jurors as the penalty phase of Moussaoui's trial got under way Monday."He lied so the plot could proceed unimpeded," Robert Spencer said in his opening statement. "He lied, and 3,000 people died."
But defense attorney Edward MacMahon said there was no evidence that Moussaoui knew about or participated in the terrorist attacks, or had any contact with the 19 hijackers.
"Moussaoui certainly wasn't sent here to tell a lie," said MacMahon, who called his client a "strange Muslim loner."

In what way "strange"? In what way a "loner"? Is his conception of Jihad mistaken? Did he misunderstand a passage or two, or 114, in the Qur'an, the way Mohammad Bouyeri apparently did when he announced his fidelity to Islam as the explanation for his murder of Theo van Gogh? Is the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill graduate, who has lived in this country since the age of 8, and yet retained, or reverted, to the purity and consolation of Islam, just like so many Mulsims have apparently done after 9/11/2001, rather than to be prompted, as one might have expected them to do, to examine and rethink their adherence to Islam itself.
There is nothing that Moussaoui did that does not have justification in Qur'an and Hadith. There is nothing he did that is not reflected in the model of Muhammad, uswa hasana, al-insan al-kamil, who took part in 78 military expeditions, to spread his belief-system (or religion, or cult, or geopolitical plan -- choose the word you think most apt), the same Muhammad who said that "war is deception" and that "Islam is to dominate and is not to be dominated."
Tell us in what way Moussaoui has failed to understand the message of the Qur'an and the Hadith, and failed to mimic the model of Muhammad.
