When Danes Pay Danegeld: The End of the Scandinavian Model

Fjordman, who has contributed so much valuable information about the Islamization of Europe to this site and to his own much-missed blog, sends in this essay:

One thousand years ago Scandinavians were the barbarians of Europe, spreading fear and extracting "Danegeld" from their more civilized neighbors. In the 21st century Scandinavians are peaceful and soft-spoken, and the roles seem to have been reversed with certain newly arrived immigrants. There are claims that immigration costs Sweden 40 to 50 billion Swedish kroner every year, perhaps even several hundred billions, and has greatly contributed to bringing the Swedish welfare state to the brink of bankruptcy.

In Denmark right-wing politicians are already debating the threat of immigrant "welfare tourists," should the Swedish system collapse. In Norway almost half of all children with a non-Western background claim social security benefits. This is ten times the rate of the native population. A Danish commission concluded that Denmark could save 50 billion kroner every year by 2040 if it shut the door to third world immigration. At the same time, statistics indicate that Scandinavians will become a minority in their own countries within a couple of generations, if the current trends continue. While their political elites insist that immigration is "good for the economy," Scandinavians are in reality funding their own colonization.

Although the cost of welfare is significant, it pales in comparison to the price paid through rapidly declining social harmony and increasing insecurity caused by Muslim immigration. Some of the increase in insecurity is due to the rise of mafia groups and organized crime, but most is mainly due to terror threats and intimidation of critics of Islam and Muslim immigration.

It is true that the Scandinavian countries have much in common, but the differences that do exist should not be underestimated. It was no coincidence that the issue with the Muhammad cartoons started in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten, as Denmark is probably the one Western nation where the debate surrounding Muslim immigration is most mainstream and open. Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen's centre-right government has imposed some of the toughest regulations in the EU on asylum seekers.

Unfortunately, this does not mean that Denmark's problems are over. In 2005 attackers set fire to the immigration minister's car. A leftist group calling itself "Beatte Without Borders" said it carried out the attack, condemning the government's "racist immigration policies." Muslim extremists have declared that the Danish PM and Defense Minister are legitimate terror targets because of Denmark's participation in Iraq. Members of Denmark's moderate Muslim community say they are reluctant to speak out with critical observations of their religion, fearing social isolation, threats and violence, and a Danish Jew was even attacked for reading from the Koran.

Imam Abu Laban was one of the prime movers in making the cartoons a major international issue: "We want to internationalize this issue so that the Danish government will realize that the cartoons were insulting, not only to Muslims in Denmark, but also to Muslims worldwide," Abu Laban said. He has earlier tried to implement sharia practices in Denmark. In one prominent case, two men were killed in a row involving a group of second generation immigrants in Copenhagen. According to Imam Abu Laban the thirst for revenge could be cooled if 200,000 kroner in "blood money" were paid to the victims' families.
The 200,000 Danish kroner is approximately the value of 100 camels, the stipulated sharia price for a Muslim man's life.

Meanwhile, there is growing fear amongst politicians that the immigrant environment in the Nørrebro area in Copenhagen, which has been unofficially declared an "Islamic state" by some of its residents, is developing into a parallel society where ancient traditions threaten Danish law. Professor of Islamic studies Mehdi Mozaffari tells of how he and thousands of others have fled burkas, sharia, blood money, muftis and Islamism in the Middle East, only to witness the same beast rear its ugly head in Europe. And he warns of the consequences: "Historical experience has shown that those whom people fear will win, eventually. We saw this in Nazi Germany. There were too many Nazis, and people were scared. I fear that this is where we are heading, once more."

The most immediate victims of this climate of fear are Muslim women. A Pakistani man in Denmark recently murdered his sister in the street outside a train station because she had married a man against her family's orders. Meanwhile, Muslims in Denmark do not hesitate to exercise their right to free speech. In 2004 a leading Danish mufti said that Danish women not wearing the veil "were asking for rape," a comment seemingly less offensive to the Muslim community than a few cartoons. The twelve Muhammad cartoonists now live underground and with police protection.

In Norway Bruce Bawer, the author of the recent book While Europe Slept, tells on his website of the capitulation of Velbjørn Selbekk, the editor of the tiny Christian periodical Magazinet -- the first publication to reprint the now famous Muhammed cartoons. He had firmly resisted pressure by Muslim extremists (who made death threats) and by the Norwegian establishment. But then Norway's Minister of Labor and Social Inclusion hastily called a press conference at a major government office building in Oslo. There Selbekk issued an abject apology for reprinting the cartoons. At his side, accepting his act of contrition on behalf of 46 Muslim organizations and asking that all threats now be withdrawn, was Mohammed Hamdan, head of Norway's Islamic Council. In attendance were members of the Norwegian cabinet and the largest assemblage of imams in Norway's history. It was a picture right out of a sharia courtroom, with the Muslim leader declaring Selbekk to be henceforth under his protection.

Two representatives from the Islamic Council for Norway and a senior pastor representing Oslo's bishop then visited Qatar, where they were to meet the top Muslim leader Dr Yusuf Al Qaradawi. The trip, partially funded by the Norwegian authorities, was a public relations effort on the part of Norway, which had suddenly found itself the target of Muslim outrage because the cartoons that originated in Denmark were reprinted in a Norwegian publication. Qaradawi has supported suicide bombings, and has publicly bragged about how "Islam will conquer Europe." The "moderate" Sheikh Qaradawi was not satisfied with the apology from the Norwegian editor who printed the Muhammad cartoons. He wanted to dictate that Norway adopt Islamic blasphemy laws. Qaradawi's website IslamOnline later claimed that Norway agreed to do this, which is totally untrue. Local Muslims led by the lawyer Abid Q. Raja, however, have pushed for such an option: "The point is not to restrict freedom of speech but to give it direction so that weak groups do not feel insulted or mocked. If we do nothing the differences within Norwegian society will increase in the future."

Mullah Krekar, the former leader of the Islamic terror group Ansar al-Islam, still lives in Norway, even though he has pretty much openly threatened the country with terror attacks and has called Osama bin Laden "the jewel of Islam." At the same time, Krekar denies he is a threat to national security in Norway. "I only know five streets in Oslo," he said. "How can I be a threat?" He has written a book about himself, which was published by a man called William Nygaard, who was shot at and almost killed in the early 90s for having published the Norwegian translation of Salman Rushdie's book The Satanic Verses. A Norwegian NGO called the Freedom of Expression Fund supports the translation and publication of bin Laden's speeches.

Meanwhile the Norwegian translation of Oriana Fallaci's latest book remains unpublished in Norway, even though her two previous books about Islam and the West sold in large numbers. FOMI, a Norwegian anti-Islamic website, was recently charged with "racism and spreading Islamophobia" for translating an article from Frontpage Magazine, with comments, about a Muslim rape wave in the West. The number of rape charges in Sweden has quadrupled in just over twenty years, parallel with Muslim immigration.

In 2005 Stortinget, the Norwegian parliament, passed a new Discrimination Act. The act says in pretty clear words that in cases of suspected direct or indirect discrimination based on religion or ethnicity, native Norwegians are guilty until proven otherwise. The immigration spokesman for the right-wing Progress Party, Per Sandberg, feared that the law would jeopardize the rights of ordinary, law-abiding Norwegian citizens. Reverse burden of proof is combined with liability to pay compensation, which means that innocent persons risk having to pay huge sums for things they did not do. In 2005 the Norwegian police issued a mobile security alarm to Progress Party leader Carl I. Hagen. Hagen had criticized Islam, and could see no similarity with the concept of morality and justice found in Christianity. Hagen also said that if Israel loses in the Middle East, Europe will succumb to Islam next. He feels that Christians should support Israel and oppose Islamic inroads into Europe. In an unprecedented step, a group of Muslim ambassadors to Norway blasted Carl I. Hagen in a letter to the newspaper Aftenposten, claiming that he had offended 1.3 billion Muslims around the world. Other Norwegian politicians quickly caved in and condemned Hagen.

Unidentified assailants fired shots at an Oslo restaurant owned by the family of a Pakistani-born female comedienne who has achieved prominence for lampooning conservative Islam. The comedienne, Shabana Rehman, described the incident as "an appalling act of terror" and said it would not deter her from continuing her work. Samira Munir, a Norwegian politician of Pakistani origin, was found dead under suspicious circumstances at a train station outside Oslo in November 2005. She had received death threats many times from the Pakistani community in Norway because of her courageous fight for the rights of Muslim immigrant women, and for banning hijab, the Islamic veil. The leader of the Socialist Left party and now Norway's Minister of Finance, Kristin Halvorsen, praised all the "blood, sweat and tears Pakistanis in Norway have spent on building the country" when she started the party's election campaign in the Pakistani countryside in 2005.

If the reaction of the Norwegian authorities to the cartoon case has been weak, that of the Swedish government has been downright appalling. The ruling Social Democratic party went to the drastic length of closing down the website of a competing political party that featured a Muhammad cartoon online. Sweden, an extremely authoritarian country, has national elections this year. Probably no other Western nation has more problems with, yet less debate about Muslim immigration than Sweden, and the only thing the elites are doing about this is demonizing neighboring Denmark for "xenophobia." The Swedish security services (Säpo), in collusion with Foreign Minister Leila Freivalds, forced the website SD-Kuriren offline for publishing the Jyllands-Posten cartoons. SD-Kuriren is the house publication of the hard-right Swedish Democrats. Freivalds stated that "it is terrible that a small group of extremists are exposing Swedes to danger [by reprinting the cartoons]." The party's secretary, Björn Söder, says the site has been reopened by moving it to another server, although the pictures of Muhammad have been removed. The Sweden Democrats and SD-Kuriren received threats after the publication of the pictures.

Violent assaults and life threatening attacks against members of the Swedish Democrats, by Muslims or "anti-Fascists," have taken place many times, but are rarely mentioned in the media. No dissent is tolerated in Sweden.

Jonathan Friedman is a New York Jew, now living with his Swedish wife in the southern Swedish city of Malmö where he teaches socio-anthropology. According to him, "no debate about immigration policies is possible, the subject is simply avoided. Sweden has such a close connection between the various powerful groups, politicians, journalists, etc. The political class is closed, isolated." Friedman thinks circumstances in Sweden are special also because Sweden has a long tradition of maintaining a correct surface. Two Swedish girls were sent home from school for wearing sweaters showing a tiny Swedish flag. The headmaster was concerned that this might be deemed offensive by some immigrants. Helle Klein, political editor of the newspaper Aftonbladet, boasts: "If the debate is going to be about whether there are problems with immigrants, we don't want it." Hans Bergström, former editor-in-chief of the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter, worries that Sweden has become "a one-party state."

In a sermon at Filadelfia church in Stockholm in March 2005 the Norwegian celebrity evangelist preacher Runar Søgaard, repeated his declaration that Muhammad was "a confused pedophile" since his wives included a girl aged nine years old. Søgaard was placed under police protection after receiving death threats. The sermon triggered fears of a religious war in Sweden. Muslim radicals posted a very explicit threat to launch a wave of terrorist attacks against Sweden for the "insult." In February 2005 a Swedish museum removed an erotic painting plastered with verses from the Koran from an exhibition about AIDS. Some vocal members of the Muslim community launched a letter-writing campaign that resulted in hundreds of e-mails, among them messages along the lines of "remember what happened in Holland." The museum, however, insisted that the "threats" it received had nothing to do with the removal of the work. At the same time, the Swedish historian of religion Matthias Gardell claims that Islamophobia is perhaps the greatest threat to democracy in the Western world today. The Swedish writer and leftist intellectual Jan Guillou has stated that the rhetoric employed by the Nazis against Jews is now used to target Muslims. In Sweden an anti-Semitic crime is reported to the police once every three days. The Jewish congregations in the major cities of Stockholm, Göteborg and Malmö are forced to spend up to 25 percent of their membership fees on security and hired guards. Most of these hate crimes are perpetrated by Muslims.

Just as the country is in the midst of the worst crime wave in modern history, with a desperately underfunded police force, the Swedish Social Democrats have announced that cheaper public dental care would be a major issue in this year's election campaigns. There could hardly be a better symbol of Europe's love affair with the welfare state and "social security" in an age where physical security is rapidly disappearing through runaway Muslim immigration. "Eurabia: You may get your teeth kicked in, but at least you have cheap dental care" could become the slogan for the entire continent.

Scandinavians, too, were once involved in blood feuds and fanaticism. That time is called the Viking Age, and we left it behind a thousand years ago, as Muslims should have done. We have no particular urge to return to being a primitive tribal society. Yet too many of our "new countrymen" seem to insist on bringing one into our living room. They might get their way. Perhaps, in reaction to the pressures from Muslims, native Scandinavians will "rediscover their inner barbarian" and history will go full circle: from tribalism to cappuccino and back again. Who knows? If Arnold Schwarzenegger fails to get re-elected as Governor of California he may like to do a sequel to "Conan the Barbarian." He could shoot it in Malmö, Sweden, which is set to become the first major Scandinavian city with a Muslim majority. Chances are he'd be surprised at how well he fits in.

There's one important difference; The Vikings were pagans who didn't force their beliefs upon the peopels they conquered. If anything they were tolerant and never persecuted christians or muslims for religious reasons. The plundered christian cities in England and muslim cities in Spain. When f.ex. a monastery loaded with gems and precious books proved to tempting a target because of it's defencelessness, they raided it. However there's nothing to suggest that these raids were deliberate attempts to terrorize the christians or muslims. This is in stark contrast to the muslims who have a clear intention of colonizing and terrorize us motivated by religion.

What's more Viking women had status and rights, in marriage, property, business etc, which we in England lost after the Norman Conquest and didn't get back for centuries.

Scary stuff from fjordman. It looks like Sweeden is essentially a totalitarian state where no real debate on immigration will be allowed. Norway appears headed in that direction as well.

Does anyone know why fjordman ended his highly informative blog?

Odin that almost sounded apologetic if it was meant that way there is no need. All the ancient warrior cultures spread by the sword and fought for survival. That was along time ago and for most of us our cultures have put barbarism on the back burner and seek to modernize and build strength economically. I have no Scandinavian ancestry that I know of but have always been fascinated by your history. I have served with Danish soldiers in Bosnia and I for one would take their back against anyone but my own nation. So don’t jump on the USA and I’m with you 100%. I think realistically islams worst nightmare would be winning. The obvious things would happen, global chaos, economic collapse for very nation, forced slavery and barbarism would be the fate of all free peoples. Even if it went that far, free people would remember the good ol days and fight once again for freedom, this time from the slavery of islam. It would be poetic justice for someone to use their same evil methods against them, insurgents springing up on a global scale. I for one don’t think it will come to that. We well stop them if not with restrictive laws and common sense then with force. The truth is our greatest weapon and they realize it and want to restrict it. I know we in the US have many apologists for ol mo’s demon hoards but we will not let Europe fall. Saving you people has become a part time job for us. We have your back.

Ronin, scourge of islam

Proud Infidel: Running a blog takes a lot of time, which I don't have at the moment. I won't disappear completely, and will post some comments here or at LGF every now and then, but I won't reopen my blog any time soon. If I do write some essays, they will be posted at other blogs. Maybe Gates of Vienna next time.

Don't expect much more than a handful of these throughout 2006, though.

Ronin wrote: "Odin that almost sounded apologetic if it was meant that way there is no need. All the ancient warrior cultures spread by the sword and fought for survival."

I didn't mean to apologize for anything, just make it clear that the Vikings didn't intend to be "missionares armed with swords" so to speak, but that the concept of forced conversion was unknown to them, that wasn't the reason why they did as they did. Historically speaking polytheistic religions have generally been a lot more tolerant than monotheistic religions.

... the Nørrebro area in Copenhagen, which has been unofficially declared an "Islamic state" by some of its residents...

State? Now what kind of religion is this? I take it that henceforth the media will refer to Islam (Surrender in Arabic) as a political party or a very large paramilitary club or someting like that. Something more sinister. Something more, well, Islamic.

I didn’t think you were apologizing nor would I expect it, I just wanted clarification. The fact still remains we are with you in this fight despite our liberal press and our sometimes-confused politicians.

The anti-immigrant Right-wing parties are completely marginalized in Sweden. All the mainstream parties, Left and Right, refuse to enter into any sort of dialogue with them. The press refuses to report on their activities and proclamations. It's as if they don't exist...or do so only in an Orwellian realm as a non-entity.

Sweden is a goner. It will trump France as the very first Islamic Republic in Europe.

Ronin,

Where can you trace your ancestry to? If it's to one of the germanic peoples/tribes, then you may have scandinavian roots, as germanic tribes/culture originated in scandinavia.
Wikipedia has an excellent entry about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germanic_tribes#History

I think, without knowing too much of norwegian affairs, that fjordman might be a bit too hard on norway. I mean, the progress party, which is the norwegian version of the danish peoples party just with a "sweeter tongue", has far more backing in the populace of norway(nearing a full third last I heard) than the danish peoples party do in denmark.

Ronin wrote: "I didn’t think you were apologizing nor would I expect it, I just wanted clarification. The fact still remains we are with you in this fight despite our liberal press and our sometimes-confused politicians."

It's very much appreciated, especially since the political Left in my country is trying to make it look as if we are totally isolated internationally and that our reputation has been irrepably damaged due to our supposed 'xenophobia'. It may be "irrepably damaged" in the muslim world; But so what? They don't like us anyway. I would be a lot more concerned if peopel in the western world turned their backs to us.

If they did a remake in the foreseeable future of "The sound of music," Julie Andrews will be singing, "the hills are alive, with the sound of satanic chanting." (details left out, you get my point) My Swedish Grandfather would be rolling in his grave. It makes my stomach hurt.

This is a spectacular summary. Print it out. Email it to others. Lots of others.

Sweden is a goner. It will trump France as the very first Islamic Republic in Europe.

What about Belgium? They're on a roll. Holland is coming on strong too. And picking up steam along the rail in the backstretch here comes grand old Italy, sitting just across the Adriatic from the regrettable Albania, and breeding at a slower pace than a junkie on Quaaludes sacked up with a dog-faced girlfriend.

Who will go down first? We should do an office pool on this. $25 per play.

I have a lot of family in Sweden, and I sure get surprised at how these normally very mild people have nothing nice to say about the influx of Moslem immigrants in their Country.
Which gives me some hope.

Denmark has 300% backing of the Greek People I can tell you that now.

With all of my friedns and family who I have talked to the only difference in opinion I have found is the degree that they support Denmark in this fight.

Danish corporations would be wise to simply relocate to Greece, Israel, and Armenia not only are the three countries in the front line against Islamism on your side, they are also much more stable markets in the first place.

Fjordman -- your time is well spent writing commentaries like this one -- the facts speak for themselves... The facts spell out the withering truth about Islam's heinous effects in Scandinavia.

Anyone who holds out the false premise that Muslims residing in the West will project a moderating effect on their ideology is forwarding a fraud. Islam's impact is a numbers game -- I am starting to think that somewhere around a 5% population density the ugly face of Islam reveals itself and sets to devouring all it surveys. Once it rears its ugly head -- beware!

Thanks again. I also think that to invest in western countries is much more safe than to rely on these unpredictable muslim countries with their irratic behaviour and contempt for everything western.

That they have choosen to make Denmark their enemy is really stupid and it shows how irrational these peopel are. Up to this crisis Denmark has always had a good relationship with the muslim world and many Danes have had important commissions in the arab world. Many public buildings in the arab world is made by Danish architects. As an example I can mention The National Assembly Building in Kuwait build by the world famous Danish architech Jorn Utzon (see link).

http://www.1website.com/c_t5_index/c_t5_8/c_t5_8.html

He's more famous for the Sydney Opera House but the assembly building in Kuwait is another one of his masterpieces.

Another example is the foreignministry in Riyadh, Saudi-Arabia, designed by the Danish architect Henning Larsen (see link)

http://www.csbe.org/e_publications/riyadh_architecture/fig32.htm

They have a lot of oilmoney so they can pay for the best of the best. But if we, with our otherwise spotless record in relation to the muslim world, can be the target of a hate-campaign, then noone can feel safe.

I think it's know as "oilymoney".

jsla wrote: "I think it's know as "oilymoney".

You mean dirty money or what?

On the day the Skandanavians dispatch these traitors who openly incite sedition, I'll become hopeful. Only despair until then...... I'm curious how this transition from welfare state, where the interlopers suckle until all the wealth is dried up, to the fledgling islamic state, where no more wealth is created, will play out. At some point, the natives will either escape, or become true dhimmi's, slaves in their own land.

wow.

it does seem more and more that we will have difficulty talking to "moderate muslims" because the tradition they champion (even if they speak of a new variation) is so hopelessly backward.

Yep. Very very dirty.

A sanguine (and perhaps unrealistic) look at Europe's demographic nightmare...

Sorry folks....dead link.

Here's the article...

HOW DEMOGRAPHY FAILS

J. R. Dunn

“Europe will be Islamic by the end of this century at the very latest.”

The floodgates opened with that comment from Bernard Lewis. Since its publication in Die Welt in July 2004, countless responses have appeared from writers as varied as George Weigel and Patrick Buchanan. The latest is Mark Steyn, in a New Criterion essay titled, in his customary understated style, “It’s the Demography, Stupid.”

An unusual unanimity has prevailed – almost every writer concurs with Lewis that Europe is a lost cause, a casualty in the war against Islamofascism.

The argument is straightforward: the native European population is dropping, with birthrates in all countries below replacement level. The Muslim populace, for the most part unassimilated, is still expanding. One curve is going up, the other down. When they cross, Europe will have effectively come under Muslim control.

But is it truly that simple? After all, there’s a reason why you’re not reading this in a U.S. with a population of 500 million+, which is what demography foresaw in 1950. Or in the 2006 world of 8 billion souls, as predicted ten years later. And certainly not in the 21st century universally forecast in the 70s, in which a few survivors grub about in the ruins left by the Great Crash following a runaway population explosion.

The reason these futures never came to pass is that predictive demography is not a science.

Oh, it’s dependable in limited cases—in telling us how many teenagers will be around in five years, or how many deaths of old age will occur per annum. But farther than a generation ahead, it’s about as valuable as Tarot cards, and not as interesting.

The shortcomings of predictive demography were apparent even as the discipline was being founded. In 1798, Thomas Malthus published An Essay on the Principle of Population in response to the many utopian tracts then in circulation. Malthus pointed out that population would always outgrow the food supply. While food increased at the arithmetical ratio of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, every twenty-five years, population growth was geometrical, growing at the rate of 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32… At the end of two centuries the ratio would be 256 to 9. In three centuries, 4,096 to 13.

Put in simple arithmetic, Malthus’ conclusion was powerful and unforgettable. His pamphlet was widely read, influencing economists and social thinkers throughout the 19th century.

But Malthus began having doubts. What he’d done was simply plot the curve of recent population growth and extend it into the future, the same method used by demographers to this day. After reconsidering that procedure, he published an expanded version of his pamphlet in 1803, “...to soften some of the harshest conclusions of the first Essay.” Malthus now postulated a form of “moral restraint” that would cause people to abstain from sex and thus lower the growth curve. (This was the only way out Malthus could conceive – he was an ordained parson and had a horror of birth control.)

That solution may sound impossibly utopian in and of itself. But Malthus was on to something, though you wouldn’t have known it from the public response. The second edition lacked any stark, easily-grasped formula, and went largely unrecognized by readers. Despite all his efforts (he was to publish several further editions), Malthus remained famous as the man who predicted mass starvation as the inevitable fate of mankind.

Demography grew no more cheerful in the ensuing century. It was a factor in the brutal shift in Southern slaveholding policy in the 1830s. A series of abortive revolts convinced Southern aristocrats that blacks were “outbreeding” whites and would soon overwhelm them. Punitive slave codes went into effect caging blacks on plantations, establishing curfews, and punishing signs of insubordination. It was a self-defeating program, underlining criticism by Northern abolitionists and further isolating the South.

A similar school of thought lay behind opposition to immigration to the U.S., with claims that “uncivilized” Italians, Poles, Slavs, and Jews, with their enormous families, would eventually outnumber the native population (itself a mixture of ethnicities). The campaign ultimately abolished mass immigration, but only in 1925, decades after the peak of European influx.

At the turn of the century, Kaiser Wilhelm II’s sick vision of Die gelbe Gefahr – the Yellow Peril – in which Asians would outbreed whites spilled across the continent, helping to fuel worldwide animus against Asians.

Comic relief at last arrived in the person of Paul Ehrlich, an insect biologist who achieved fame in the 1960s, that levelheaded and common-sense decade, whose The Population Bomb postulated an uncontrolled population explosion) which was beyond human solution and would end in universal famines leading to the collapse of civilization, if not the extinction of mankind. (How population could continue growing under conditions of mass starvation—the famines were supposed to begin in 1975—was only one contradiction of many.)

Ehrlich ended up as something of a legend: a prophet whose every last prediction proved wrong. (Quite an achievement – crystal gazing or palmistry will give consistently better results.) He did very well regardless, establishing his own heavily-endowed foundation, receiving a MacArthur “Genius” grant, and being nominated several times for the Nobel Prize. The population bomb thesis survived, usually found in half-educated types who recite it with the intensity of the convert. Al Gore was ringing the alarm bell over it as recently as the 2000 election.

That’s the record of predictive demography, always based on the same flawed premise, always mistaken, at worst a mask for racism, at best a selling point for intellectual hucksters.

So what do we make of Lewis and Steyn, who are neither?

I’ve always taken Lewis’s statement as a warning, put in that form to force discussion, at which it has been an unqualified success. But many writers seem to view it as prophecy, a guarantee that Europe is already lost, with nothing remaining but the sackcloth and ashes.

This stems from the same error as Malthus, Ehrlich, et al – taking the current statistics as given, drawing a curve stretching across the next century, and shouting apocalypse.

Of course, the numbers are not solid and unchangeable, because the main factor in demography is not statistical at all. As Malthus seems to have realized (though he erred as to the precise cause), it’s human nature, the most unpredictable force in the universe. What tripped up Ehrlich and his followers was an effect known as the “demographic transition” – a byproduct of the same flaky 60s that gave Ehrlich his platform, in which young adults across the developed world began postponing families in order to enjoy life during their 20s. The result was fewer children and a collapse in population growth that has continued to this day and generated a counterpanic over deflating populations.

It’s this drop that’s causing the concern for Europe, coupled with Muslim immigrants importing their traditional large families. The numbers seem to bear these fears out, with all of Europe below replacement level of 2.1 children per woman. The Muslim rate is not as certain, but seems to range from 4 to 6, depending on country, two to three times more than native Europeans.

But how likely are these trends to continue? Are Arabs and North Africans immune to demographic effects that have overtaken the rest of the world? “Spengler” thinks otherwise. The political columnist for the Asia Times, and one of the most formidable intellects working in the international press (for a cheap, nasty laugh, compare any of his columns to one on the same subject by, say, Thomas L. Friedman), Spengler has devoted several recent columns to the problem of Muslim demography.

According to Spengler, the Islamic world is facing its own demographic transition, and (no surprise here), is unlikely to handle it as well as the West: “Urbanization, literacy and openness to the modern world will suppress the Muslim womb, in the absence of radical measures.”

Algeria has a population growth rate of only 1.4% per year, Qatar of just 1.2%. Iran is falling below replacement level, with much of the Arab world poised to follow circa 2030. Muslim colonies in Europe, surrounded as they are by Western influences, are enduring the same process. The rise in hideous “honor” killings throughout the region strongly implies that Muslim women are revolting against their Koranic status as brood mares, and the attitude of women is a key demographic factor.

What this means for Europe is that Muslims will have neither the time nor the numbers to turn the place into Greater Andalusia. And due to the demographic transition, the next generation is likely to be their last opportunity. This doesn’t mean that Europe is not in for interesting times. The long postwar slumber is over – the July bombers and last autumn’s vast Franco-Muslim car-burning spree are clear evidence of that. Europe has embarked on a rolling, decades-long civil war to decide whether the Muslim population will join Western civilization or find themselves happier elsewhere. It will grow extremely painful before it’s over. “The worst of the war,” Spengler writes, “may be fought on European soil.”

It would a smart move for the Jihadis, having failed in the Middle East, to shift operations to the Western heartland. It’s interesting that both Abu Musab al-Zarqawi’s Al-Queda in Iraq and Ansar al-Islam have been building up their European networks in recent months. The Ramadis and Fallujahs of the 21st century’s teens-decade may very well be notable European cities, with our eager and loyal NATO allies begging us for troops and military assistance.

And as WW II taught us, there’s nothing like a bit of adversity to spark the birth rate.

Nothing can be expected from the EU, whose bureaucrats will continue deepening the same groove until they’re at last ordered to grow beards and wear turbans.

But the European people are another matter. The mass rejection of the EU’s phone directory/quantum-physics textbook “constitution” is a good sign. So is Holland’s reaction to the assassination of Theo Von Gogh. If Jihadi savagery can animate a people as politically lethargic as the Dutch, anything is possible. We also have the ascension of Pope Benedict, who, like his predecessor, may succeed in mobilizing the Pope’s divisions.

The spirit of Europe, the barbarian backwoods that became the dynamo of the world, may not yet be dead.

Or it may well be, with Europe doomed to become the Byzantium of the 21st century.

But demography is an awfully weak peg on which to hang such an argument. Earlier demographic visionaries would have been closer to the truth if they’d taken their vision and made the exact opposite predictions. You can’t view statistics fifty years down the line as if they were facts; too much can happen in the long years between.

Like Malthus, we need to have more faith in human nature before we write off the gardens of the West. For the moment, and in spite of the numbers, my money remains on Europe.

"While their political elites insist that immigration is "good for the economy," Scandinavians are in reality funding their own colonization"

That is the crux of the problem: vested interests(multinational companies) either do NOT care about the problem or else they have much to gain from it.

Make your own mind up about the REAL source of the problem: it isn't the Muslims, they are only the symptoms, it is those who CONTINUE to allow them in despite the obvious incompatability.

No rightminded person would allow this so WHY do they do it?

Answer that and you have the solution.

"I have a lot of family in Sweden, and I sure get surprised at how these normally very mild people have nothing nice to say about the influx of Moslem immigrants in their Country.
Which gives me some hope."

Bar, please tell us more about what real Swedish people are doing to protect themselves and change the situation. Can they not vote for a different government, or do they like most things except the Islamist immigration issue about those in power?

Vikings of old believed they needed to die with a sword in their hand, fighting, to reach valhalla. That is why they were such fierce fighters. Correct? A religious reward for fighting to the death.

I would be curious to know how that was changed.

odin, king of gods, You are not isolated, far from it so many people in American and New York are supportive. There was a rally infront of the UN which I attended as well as rallies in other cities.

Tell the left in your country that they are wrong that Denmark's status has grown in the world, that people who have never bought Danish products now go out of their way buy them, I do cheese, beer, many Arla products.

Tell the left in your country, that to put there trust in friends, that Americans will never let them down or boycott millions of dollars over a cartoon.

Tell the left in your country that they are wrong that giving into bullies is the path to surrender, the path to submission and a life without freedom.

odin, king of gods, keep up the fight, shout them down, tell them off, call them what they are fools and traitors destroying your beautiful country.

I have been to Denmark and it is perfect, you should be proud of your viking ancestors they evolved from brave me to great men.

Long live Denmark!

Hi all,

Since Jylland Posten has taken a leadership
role in this matter, why not have them hire
fjordland to continue his website. We may
have to put up with some commercial ads, but
that may be a minor distraction well worth
the price of having serious insight from the front lines in Europe.

Magooey

Magooey, good idea, I value his posts very much.

lili,
while we are waiting for bar to give us some examples of the universally known as being tolerant Swedes losing their tolerance of Mohomaddan influx of their country let me give this related story.
In the later half of the 1970s I spent some years on the hippie trail in Asia, spending several years in India and Nepal. I met many young Europeans (French, German, Italians, Swedes,( in fact all the Scandinavean countries ) Spanish etc. who had travelled overland from Europe through Turkey, Iraq, Iran Afghanistan to India. They did this because it was more adventurous than flying direct and you could make the journey using local buses for US$100.00. ( Some hardy types claimed to have hitch hiked on trucks and spent $10.00 )
I met hundreds and hundreds of people who made this journey ( for a while I worked in a restaurant in Nepal patronized only by low budget travellers ) and EVERY SINGLE PERSON who I spoke to had an extremely un-pleasant experience crossing those Muslim countries. Not because of the mode of transport , but because of the attitude of the local people.
AND THESE WERE HIPPIES who generally LOVED EVERYBODY!
Women had appalling stories. I dont recall any who had travelled alone but even the many who travelled with their boyfriends were harrassed and abused all the way.
I remember Teheran was often singled out as a particularly ugly , polluted city full of nasty esperiences and odious people.
I heard of a girl naively bathing naked in a lake in Afghanistan and being shot to death without warning by a "devout" tribesman.
Without exception all expressed great relief at reaching the border of India where Hindus and Sikhs were a majority and the scowls gave way to smiles and normal human interaction of respect for others. All dreaded facing the return journey.
I realize 1970s hippies and present day Swedish suburbanites may not have much in common, but they both shared unpleasant contact with Muslims.
I myself only spent time in one Muslim part of India, Kashmir, and the people were definitely different to the people I encountered in the rest of India.

Borg wrote: "Vikings of old believed they needed to die with a sword in their hand, fighting, to reach valhalla. That is why they were such fierce fighters. Correct? A religious reward for fighting to the death.

What changed was simply that we became christians. Or wait, maybe it wasn't that simple? The Viking age ended around 1100 AD but unknown to most non-scandinavians Denmark continued to be a warrior nation. For some 250 years we continued to try and expand our territory by conquering land around the Baltic Sea, but this time the devine support was provided by the Catholic Curch, since the Pope had given the Danish kings right to conquer these lands, the last pagan territories in Europe. The Danish flag dates from this period, probably making it the oldest national flag in the world (see link):

http://www.navalhistory.dk/English/TheFlag/History_of_the_Flag.htm

Being a white cross on a red background it symbolized that the Danish army had been commissioned by the Pope to spread christianity. I wonder how many of the muslims who have been burning our flag recently knows this, that it's actually a crusader-banner they are burning? I guess very few, if any. I think there's some irony in that, when they scream about the western 'crusaders' they don't know how right they are in the case of Denmark.

The Swedish elite stinks on ice, that is the problem. In view of the atrocious behaviour with respect to Muslim immigrants (obscenely replicated by unfortunate Norway, in spite of the Norwegian obsession with not being Swedes), you may be surprised to hear that at the root of the problem is racism - and racism of a singularly brute, undiluted, self-regarding kind. But it is not against Muslims: it is against Catholics, especially Italians and other Mediterranean people.

Let me explain. In the 1960s, following a wave of post-war Italian immigration to Sweden, it became widely known in Italy that Swedes despised Italians and regularly treated them as second-class citizens. If an Italian was stabbed to death, the police would naturally assume that he had been murdered by another Italian - and as often as not, a murderous Swede would go free. There was, and still is, no redress for any Italian who gets in trouble in Sweden; or for any parent in a mixed couple whose Swedish divorced partner abducts their children.

I have a close relative who is the head of a major Italian NGO, and he tells me the same kind of story. He regularly takes part in all-European meetings of leaders in his field. His views, and the views of others like him, are treated with respect and interest by colleagues from the large countries - Britain, Germany, France, Spain; but when the Northern delegates break in, a wholly different atmosphere prevails. No respect whatever is shown to anyone born south of Berlin or of the English Channel, and views and proposals are not so much offered as plonked down from a great height, as though being Swedish or Norwegian or Dutch (for those people have the same attitudes) made you one of the princes of the world, and your views of transcendent importance. Add to that, my relative says, that these are tiny countries with no notion of the governance of great industrial countries with dozens of million inhabitants, so that their proposals are often as impractical as they are arrogant. My relative tends to go into suspended animation mode whenever a Northern representative opens mouth, certain that nothing either polite or of value will be said.

At the root of it is simply this: that the European Union was born as a Catholic enterprise - its fathers, Adenauer, De Gasperi and Schuman, were the heads of their countries' Christian Democrat parties - and Sweden has forgotten its Lutheranism, but still remembers its hatred for Catholicism. Swedish politics in Europe are based on hijacking the institutions of the Union by building an alliance of British, Scandinavian and North German politicians, bound together by the prejudices of Political Correctness and an ancient tradition of doing things behind closed doors and not trusting the brute masses. This campaign has so far been successful - more than they imagined, perhaps, because of the complete conversion of the French elites to PC and multiculturalism in the years between the founding of the Union and the admission of Sweden.

The powerful PC drive of Swedish politics is intended to destroy the Christian heritage of Europe, and they make no bones about it. This goal is shared by most elite groups in Northern Europe, and by all the heirs of the dead but still walking ghost of Communism in the south, which makes a political majority. And in this struggle against Christianity, the only possible ideological cover available is multiculturalism; which Sweden and all the related elites have therefore adopted with enthusiasm.

To the great issue of imposing a wholly Politically Correct attitude on Europe as a whole, the fate of a few ordinary Swedish citizens in Malmoe or elsewhere matters less than nothing. The Swedes are conscious of the alarming fact that the secularist elites breed less fast than Catholics and evangelical Protestants, and fear that all the good work done surreptitiously in the seventies and eighties may be undone by the rising tide of the Continent's native faith. A lot of European politicians were atrociously alarmed by the immense impact of Pope Woytila's death and the rising popularity of his successor.

Political Correctness cannot survive in Europe without an ally; it is, against Christianity, a losing proposition. And that is why the status of Christianity as Europe's native religion must be watered down or even broken. The anti-Catholic leadership of Europe calculate that Islam will not really manage to become a majority on the continent - and that, in any case, a large number of its members will be secularized much as many nominal Christians have been - but that there will be enough of them to destroy for ever Christianity's pretension to be the natural religion of Europe. Remember Chirac's refusal to mention any Christian roots in the supposed European constitution? They pretty much gave themselves away there, did they not?

Finally, there is another point you have to notice. They may be at polar opposites on what is commonly called morality, but Political Correctness and Islam understand each other instinctively on their opposition to free discussion and Christian morality. They agree that freedom of speech must be curtailed where it is "offensive" to privileged groups; and they are of one mind that the Church should withdraw into dhimmified enclosures, and, like good Victorian children, be neither seen nor heard on the public square. And there is much more in this agreement against freedom than one would think. It certainly guides academic politics in much of the West.

Paolo, what an interesting theory. I actually grew up in Germany, in both the North (near Bremen) and in Duesseldorf. I went to the kinds of schools where the 'next leaders' are educated: Gymnasium.

What I really noticed was that the protestants (North) seemed a lot more deeply interested in religion than the southern ones, who did 'do' their communion etc but didn't really seem to be very religious.

Something must have changed to these protestants to become over-tolerantly and anti-religiously multicultural - that generation is now about 40 years old, i.e. in charge.

In Europe many churches, both protestant and catholic are keen to 'have dialogue' with muslims in interfaith conferences.

Your statement "They may be at polar opposites on what is commonly called morality, but Political Correctness and Islam understand each other instinctively on their opposition to free discussion and Christian morality" does not seem like the whole story. On the recent cartoon issue, I can assure you that local christian spokespeople have used the opportunity to tell the media to stop showing things they found offensive. I heard them say NOTHING about protecting freedom of speech.

Let's all stop blaming protestants, catholics, atheists, even multicultualists who understand limitations, and face the basic fact: islamists know how to manipulate us all in our own way: with christians they talk about shared moral values, with atheists and multiculturalists they talk about their human rights. Easy for them. Too easy.

Paolo wrote: "...In the 1960s, following a wave of post-war Italian immigration to Sweden, it became widely known in Italy that Swedes despised Italians and regularly treated them as second-class citizens...."

Well, this is news to me. Though I have no doubts that some of these italian immigrants have been treated badly (as immigrants often are) I think it's too far-fetched to say that that the swedes have some anti-catholic agenda. The Dhimmitude of Sweden is based on a psycological barrier and a lack of political leadership, not some sinister plan to destroy christian Europe. Since the swedish king Gustavus Adolphus II died in the battle of Lützen in 1632 as selfproclaimed leader of north european protestantism, the swedes haven't been fighting any wars against catholicism.

"...My relative tends to go into suspended animation mode whenever a Northern representative opens mouth, certain that nothing either polite or of value will be said..."

North and South Europe are certainly very different. Maybe SO different that we can't communicate sometimes.

Odin I think that the Hoplite and the Viking Raider would make a perfet combination don't you?

I personally think we should all be looking for a non oil source of energy in order to bankrupt the Islamofascist Pigs, and as for their terrorism remembers

"Spartans do not ask how many, they ask were"

What Europe neeeds is the ressurection of the Willy Odysseus, and Leonidas the Lionhearted warrior who held of the entire army of the East with only 300 Spartans.

Lili, a lot of "Christian" spokespeople are sixties refugees and part of the problem rather than the solution. It does not detract from the fact that the political leaderships of Europe are out to cut the really living churches - and that means the Catholics and the Evangelicals - down to size; alas, they have accomplices in a lot of ecclesiastical structures - I refer you to the many comments made on this site about the imbecility, ignorance, arrogance and dhimmitude of the Anglican leadership. The Lutherans are, if anything, worse.

Odin, perhaps you are not the most qualified person to detect racism among your fellow-Scandinavians. Try the experience of being systematically ignored during policy meetings, or insulted in a public place (a train, if you want to know) as happened to my father, then you tell me. In the sixties, Swedes treated Italians as thought they were Arabs; now they treat Arabs as though they were Swedes.

Paolo wrote:
"In the sixties, Swedes treated Italians as thought they were Arabs; now they treat Arabs as though they were Swedes."

That's probably because the Italians didn't rape (or threaten to rape) their women and threaten to behead their men. The Swedes are acting out of cowardice. "Officially" they treat the Arabs as Swedes, but privately, behind closed doors, I can't recall any Swede I've met that had anything good to say about their Muslim immigrants. The socialist Swedes do it for an anti-racism integrity kick, but even they would never dare venture into Malmo, especially if they happen to be female. Still, we shouldn't chide the Swedes for their "nativism" when pretty much every European country does the same thing. It's not necessarily bad in itself, it's just how Europeans are. Blood is more important in Europe than it is in North America, that's all.

Yes, a match made in heaven.. :-)

"I personally think we should all be looking for a non oil source of energy in order to bankrupt the Islamofascist Pigs"

I my country and elsewhere peopel are working on new sources of energy to replace oil. I hope that some sort of Biofuel will soon be invented so that we can put the petroleum era behind us once and for all, and become independent of the arabs.

"and as for their terrorism remembers

"Spartans do not ask how many, they ask were"

Who knows, maybe it will come to something like that one day? History has a strange habbit of repeating itself. Maybe just a few westeners will end up saving the western world once again while the majority are passive and subdued?

Paolo wrote: "Odin, perhaps you are not the most qualified person to detect racism among your fellow-Scandinavians."

Perhaps not. Let my just say that Danes and Swedes, though they look similar, are not identical. The two countries have very different traditions in many fields. Historically speaking the two countries have always been at eachothers throats, over the last 1000 years Denmark and Sweden have been at war with eachother some 30 times. Today we have good relations with the Swedes and I think that's great, but I can assure you that I'm not incapable of being critical of the Swedes (or the Norwegians for that matter).

"Try the experience of being systematically ignored during policy meetings, or insulted in a public place (a train, if you want to know) as happened to my father, then you tell me. In the sixties, Swedes treated Italians as thought they were Arabs; now they treat Arabs as though they were Swedes."

Hmm, another possible explanation to the new swedish attitude could be that the swedes have changed and become more open to the rest of the world. They used to be very isolationist but since the days when your father were in Sweden they have opened more and more up to the outside world. We don't live in the sixties anymore, a lot of things can happen in 40 years. And it so happened that the ones who benefitted from this change in mentality were the muslims/arabs. Regrettably so.

Odin - I do not really want to turn this into a personal discussion, but one thing I would like to point out: "the days when my father was in Sweden" was the year of the Lord 1986, as a holiday, and not for work. My father was a successful businessman in Italy having a break. I was with him at the time and witnessed the scene.

Igor - where is, I will not say the Swedish Oriana Fallaci, but even the Swedish Sarkozy or Fogh Rasmussen? If these people do not admit even to themselves the truth, whether or not they are really unhappy about their peace-loving Muslim neighbours matters less than nothing; in fact, this growing nervousness and fear makes an excellent base for a future of chastened dhimmitude.

Paolo wrote: "Odin - I do not really want to turn this into a personal discussion, but one thing I would like to point out: "the days when my father was in Sweden" was the year of the Lord 1986, as a holiday, and not for work. Very well then, let's not make this too personal. Now that I think about it, I did some years ago hear that sometimes the Swedes calls us Danes the 'Italians of the North' and that it certainly isn't meant to be a compliment. Apparently some Swedes have this image of Italians as peopel who are criminals and not trustworthy and when they are angry at Danes (for whatever reason) that's one of the things they call us, because we have this image of being more 'South European' in our attitude than them. However I don't know how common it is to say things like that in Sweden.

Paolo,

Sarkozy is not reliable at all. One day he'll be talking tough about how the immigrants should behave themselves or get deported and the next day he'll be talking about implimenting affirmative action for the Muslims (to help them "assimilate" as if that's the problem, not their very presence in France). Rasmussen is different and he is the only world leader that is willing to put the values of the West (freespeech) ahead of the sensibilities of the Muslims. What other Western leader defended the motoons without qualification other than Rasmussen? I don't know what it is about Rasmussen that makes him stand up to world pressure, it could possibly be his libertarian streak or maybe something else. Sweden is not a unique example of dhimmitude and I don't even think it is the worst dhimmi in Europe. That honor goes to Britain, then France. We shouldn't get bogged down in pointless bickering when we need to be united now more than ever. Yes, Sweden is cowardly and they should know better, but it is hardly the only country behaving that way. Americans are the most anti-dhimmi populace in the world as the Dubai deal proved but even they (or their elites) are afraid of offending the Muslims. Until the West wakes up and realizes that you don't try to mollify a hostile populace, but you remove it, then we will be seeing the same thing for years to come. Even the communists were not as bad as the Muslims, they were willing to keep some aspects of European culture. Islam wants to destroy everything that isn't Islam. Until the majority population realizes that, then we will be able to make some progress.

The Danish people should stop giving Dole money to the Muslim Immigrants.Becuse of their Mullas' false probagation of the Mohammed cartoons arround the Islamic world,Denmark has lost their business ,which was the backbone of the Danish economy. The Muslim Mullahs have included the funny Cartoons, taken out of the Danish Pig Farm Festival ,which have no connection to Mohamed,in their cartoons shown to Middle Eastern Mobs to incite their anger. Now the Mullahs are back in Denmark, swalloing the Dole money, and other bennifits provioded by the Danes.Shameless broods!.
Since the danes are incurring billions of dollors on the immigrants, they must do the following,if at all they have to survive as a non-Muslim nation with respect:
1.In future, cancell all the Muslim Immigrations, which are more trouble shooting, than helping the Danish economy.
2. In thier place, immigrate hardworking non-Muslims from east european Christians, persecuted Chlristians from Islamic world, such as Pakisthan,Egypt, Latinos,Spanish, and southern Europeans, and Chinese. These people will work hard, will not put your nation into shame.
3. Cut all the benefits such as free allowances, child care benefits, and Free Dole money to these Islamists, because of whom, billions of dollors were lost to Denmark.

Cornelius - I found your link to the Dunn article "How Demography fails" very interesting. I am familiar with the Spengler article he is referring to about falling reproductive rates in the Islamic world as I posted it here once myself.

I would merely note something about the logic underlying Dunn's optimistic prognosis:

"Malthus now postulated a form of “moral restraint” that would cause people to abstain from sex and thus lower the growth curve." and

"Of course, the numbers are not solid and unchangeable, because the main factor in demography is not statistical at all. As Malthus seems to have realized (though he erred as to the precise cause), it’s human nature, the most unpredictable force in the universe."

The problem with relying on "moral restraint" and "human nature" with regards to Muslims is, to put it bluntly, that they don't share our morals nor our human nature (inasmuch as the latter bears some direct relationship to the former).

In other words, this optimism simply doesn't take into consideration a situation in which a certain "moral" outlook informing human motivation would lead to an intentional over-reproduction for the purpose of waging war.

Yes, he is correct in noting that human nature is somewhat unpredictable. But in the case of Islam, it's not really, is it? At least it hasn't been for 1400 long years...

In other words, this optimism simply doesn't take into consideration a situation in which a certain "moral" outlook informing human motivation would lead to an intentional over-reproduction for the purpose of waging war.

Certainly, this thought has occurred to the Islamists - c.f. Mullah Krekar's "mosquitoes" comment. But as for the "man in the street " in Islamic countries, who knows? I suspect his attitudes have more to do with cost-benefit calculations.

Here in the UK we had the film of the Turks who walk on all fours on Channel 4. It turns out they are 7 out of a family with 19 (sic) siblings. The cause here is inbreeding - the parents were fairly closely related - leading to brain-damage. The area of the brain that deals with balance was stunted. However, that in itself should not have been enough to prevent their walking - albeit walking unsteadily. But, it is hypothesized, such prolific reproduction left the mother with no time to assist the affected children towards even the unsteady walking of which they would have been capable. Nor would it even have occurred to her to consult non-existent healthcare services.

In brief: contraception is not available to these people; if it were, they probably couldn't afford it; if they could, they might conclude (probably correctly) that help around the farm outweighs the financial costs of another child ...

Long-term restriction of family-size probably will become both possible and an attractive option. But how long before we get to that point?

Yojimbo: "Certainly, this thought has occurred to the Islamists - c.f. Mullah Krekar's "mosquitoes" comment. But as for the "man in the street " in Islamic countries, who knows?"

My guess would be that in Islamic countries, the birthrate could well fall off because what would be the point in overbreeding in countries which are already Islamic? The question is what will happen among the Muslim diaspora who have infiltrated the west?

Dunn does make a good point when he notes, "The rise in hideous “honor” killings throughout the region strongly implies that Muslim women are revolting against their Koranic status as brood mares, and the attitude of women is a key demographic factor."

Running counter to that "human nature" factor is, as you point out, the influence of Islamists such as Mullah Krekar, exhorting the Muslim diaspora in the west to overproduce on behalf of the jihad.

One obvious solution for Europe and the US then, is to deport Islamists like Krekar who preach to their congregations the importance of waging jihad, including jihad of the "womb". Getting them out of the way would increase the likelihood of a more benign human nature taking its course.
