Alexander Downer is no Jack Straw. "Downer defies bin Laden," from News.com.au, with thanks to Rosie:
THE latest audiotape by Osama bin Laden only serves to remind the world just how dangerous and fanatical al-Qaeda and its leader were, Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said.Bin Laden has urged his followers to prepare for a long war against Western would-be occupiers in Sudan's Darfur region, according to the latest audiotape attributed to him.
In the tape, the Saudi-born militant criticises the Sudanese Government for agreeing to a US-backed peace deal for the south of that country.
He also criticises the Palestinians' Hamas-led Government for breaking what he said was a taboo against "joining infidel assemblies" and entering parliament.
But he points to the isolation of Hamas as proof the West is waging war against Islam.
Mr Downer today said the West would not be intimidated by such messages.
"My reaction is a reaction of defiance," Mr Downer said ABC Radio.
"These tapes from Osama bin Laden only reinforce my determination to fight these terrorists.
"It just reminds us all of the dangerous, fanatical people we're dealing with, and the last thing we should show in a circumstance like that is weakness and defeatism.
"This just reminds us that this is a tough fight. This is going on, it's going to continue to go on for a long time to come.
"The worst thing we should do is show weakness and hesitancy in the face of these kinds of threats."
I hope that Condoleeza was listening. This is a foreign minister that I can get behind. He more than understands "our" enemy. And he is not extending an olive branch to bin Laden or anyone else foolish enough to listen/follow his teachings, but the working end of armed diplomacy!
Australia is blessed to have this man as FM.
Hey Robert and Hugh! You'll like this. Ahhhhhhh, the joys of schadenfreude:

The New York Times
A punch for Pinch
Apr 20th 2006
From The Economist print edition
A bank dares to challenge the Sulzberger family's control of the New York Times
NEWSPAPERS are faring badly in America. Their circulations are falling as the young get their news from the internet, and they are losing their share of advertising, especially classified ads. Last year shareholders in the second-biggest, Knight Ridder, forced the firm to sell itself. No-one made much fuss apart from its journalists. But now the most illustrious publisher of all is under fire. This week Morgan Stanley, an investment bank, launched an unusual attack on the New York Times Company.
Morgan Stanley's investment-management division, which owns 5.6% of the New York Times Company, points to the disastrous performance of the firm's shares, which have fallen by 30% in the twelve months to March. Operating profits have fallen in each of the past three years. Because of a dual share structure in which the controlling Sulzberger family owns special “B” shares with the right to elect nine out of 13 board directors, Morgan Stanley complains, other investors are powerless to intervene. The bank is demanding that the Sulzbergers' special class of shares be abolished, and as a protest it refused to vote for board directors at the firm's annual meeting on Tuesday. Other investors are unhappy with the company too; 28% of ordinary shares were withheld in total.
Tough times for newspaper companies are showing up weaknesses in their managements. In January, Dow Jones & Company, publisher of the Wall Street Journal, replaced its chief executive. Some people reckon that Arthur Sulzberger, chairman of the New York Times Company, and his chief executive, Janet Robinson, are simply not doing a good enough job of steering the firm through a changing market. “They've not been as forward-thinking strategically as you would expect from such a powerful franchise,” says Lauren Rich Fine, a publishing analyst at Merrill Lynch.
Morgan Stanley is unlikely to get its way, since the Sulzberger family is unlikely to cede control. But Mr Sulzberger has already presided over two inglorious episodes at the paper—the Jayson Blair affair in 2003, when a reporter was found to have made up parts of his articles, and the recent departure of Judith Miller after flawed reporting on Iraq. Though its purpose may be chiefly symbolic, Morgan Stanley's campaign is a further blow.
Powerline noticed the New Duranty Times' problems too:

Didn't obl also say for muslims to boycott anything American?
I'll bet that's going to be hard to do considering they like our technology, clothes, vehicles, media, etc. What about the muslims in the U.S. I think they're going to have a REALLY hard time boycotting.
"The worst thing we should do is show weakness and hesitancy in the face of these kinds of threats."
Breaking the mould-
Appeasement never works with such people (Bin Laden and Co.)and only whets the appetite of a fanatical tyrant who would impose his beliefs on others. The words attributed to Bin Laden condone genocide in Sudan's Darfur region and show a Hitlerite will to exteminate all infidels (especially Jews)and even other Moslems.
This whole Jihad-Matrix is very much in the mould of Hitler when it comes to questions of extermination in general and Jews in particular. Make no mistake of it, they are today's Nazis (they even have their version of the Hitler Youth)and only understand force when it is used against them with extreme prejudice.
Thanks to JihadWatch (and others) more and more people are waking up to the danger we face. However, the many Neville Chamberlains of our time in the so-called elites will be the last to see reality-but eventually they too will see.
Freewoman..
We can certainly boycott anything Muslim..Just go to Islamicfinder.org and find the Islamic businesses near you to boycott. Usually gas stations or anything related to 7-11's....
What is infidel about these assemblies? The fact that the assemblies exist in the first place? Can't be their contents, since almost all the members are Muslims. Or are they infidels by virtue of not having a Caliph?
Strangely, Osama seems to be making the argument against Democracy in the Islamic world, and thereby seemingly strengthening the neo-Con case. But everywhere Muslims have had a chance to vote, they've voted in Islamic forces. The fact that the current Afghan government isn't pro al-Qaeda may bother him, but they implement Shariah just like Mullah Omar.
Someone needs to tell Alexander Downer that he's a racist and an Islamophobe.
I was a subscriber to the Economist for many many years, but after that article about anarchists at the turn of the 1ast centuary and Islamic terrorists being the same and suggesting that they will las for the same period of time... and then calling the Danish PM silly for his principled stance on not censoring his media and all those other incorrect articles on Islam finally did it, I did not renew my subscription when it came up for renewal in early March. It felt really good chucking the third reminder in the bin.
Hey Free Woman;
If you think that's some thing, check out my home town newspaper The Chicago Sun Times. There is an article that sums up the point of your post.
Go to chicagosuntimes.com. the title of the article is "More menus cater to Muslims." Also try jfuller@suntimes.com. I'm just learning to use the computer and do know how to forward the actual article, "yet." Trust me, it set my water to well above boiling.
OT: These bits might interest JW readers.
Firstly, my website mysteriously came back online late last night without so much as an email from Yahoo. I guess they appreciated my threats of legal ramifications.
Secondly, at the top of my blog is the new "study" I've been working hard on. It's a FLASH world map on which I am plugging factoids that should help educate and open eyes and put things about jihad into a real visual perspective. (Again, thanks to Hugh for the inspiration.)

And last, but surely not least, I have been given the opportunity to step on that bug that put the bounty online for hacking JW.

Enjoy the show as it develops.
Oh, and please send me any ideas for the "What has been lost to Islam?" map study.
Thanks gang,

I assume the sulzberger family is Jewish. This is what I don't get about some Jews. How can they take an active part in a war against their own people? When was the last time the NYT times took a pro-Israel anti-islam stance?
hey thethinker, its the same within our own government the liberals in Canada, and the Democrats in the US both are looking to defeat their own goverment to get back their power. they dont care if the lives of soldiers are on the line, with the current CIA leaker being fired, and they dont care if they take down the country and military with them. l am listening Rush's expose of this lady CIA leaker, all the ties with the Democrat party, and this Wilson losers, Richard 'Clark, the clinton holdouts in the State Department and CIA need to be routed out right now. In Canada we cannot evne send off our soldiers wiht our own equipment with out the help of the US. yet the liberals spent billions on secound hand usless submarines. for what! to scare some fishing fleet away from our shores and fish?
thethinker:
Sulzberger was raised as an Episcopalian:
http://www.newyorkmetro.com/nymetro/news/media/columns/medialife/n_8797/
I wonder what the Sulzberger Jewish family thinks of his politics.
thethinker-
Re "the elite"-
The NYT, Straw, people like Gates, think of themselves as the elite. They remind me of the old joke about elites that points out that ordinary folks like bowling, but as people become more "sophisticated" they play tennis and when they think they are elite they only play golf.
The moral of the story is that the more elite you think you are the smaller your balls get.
Interestingly Jews are some of the worst Dhimmis. Most of Hollywood is Jewish and the MSM and they won't touch Islam. In fact, you even have Spielberg making a movie like Munich. Makes you wonder what happens to Jews when they get rich and famous. I can't think of one famous person in Hollywood, or the MSM, and there are hundreds, who are Jewish, who have not taken a pro-Palestinian, anti-Israel stance. Not one.
It's funny because anti-semites say that the "Jews control Hollywood. They control the media!"
Which is true. The influential people are Jewish.
So why is it that the main stream media and Hollywood are never on Israel's side?
Hmmmm....
So what is the answer....?
The answer is that elite Jews, tend to be politically Left. In fact, there has always been a cultural history of Leftism among Jews. All the great Leftists throughout history were Jewish.
So intellectual Jews, those who become famous and/or powerful, they gravitate towards the Left.
So yes, people who are Jewish do control the media and Hollywood. But ironically, they don't control those institutions for advancement of Israel. In fact, they plot against the interests of Israel as Israel is considered Right wing in cohorts with the "imperialistic" US.
Thus the phenomenon of the Left wing Jew in the media and in Hollywood.
Thank you Denver. Way to recover the ball.
If the enemy wants Apocalypse Now, give them APOCALYPSE NOW !
Giving people what they want has been a cornerstone for the success of the United States.
Give Bin Laden et al their PERSONAL Apocalypse. Nothing succeeds like success. Succeed in finding and killing Apocalyptic Killers. Nothing else will change the behavior of Apocalyptic Killers.
Show, don't tell.
I read that Ironman. I'm going to tell my husband tonight, that the steaks are halal. He'll say, "what the halal does that mean?"
How EASY would it be to say the food is halal. Do the slaughterhouses put up their signs?
How easy would it be to say these hot dogs are PURE beef....and then slip in the pork dogs. hehehe I'll bet ole mo is turning over in the spit as I speak.
thethinker-
A lot of people don't face facts-not because they are liars-but because they have to act on the facts once they see them. All JW (and others)are doing is sticking facts under people's noses and look at how threatened many people are by that. Many Hollywood types, elitists, etc. don't want to be the first to face facts because it is not pleasant to be an outsider.
Churchill once said that WW2 was the most unnecessary war in history because too many people would not face the facts about the Nazis, and one historian I've read (I think it was Toynbee) said that during the 1930's Churchill was "probably the most hated politician in Britian" because he kept sticking unpleasant facts under people's noses about Hitler and the Nazis. Churchill called this his "out of step period."
But Churchill kept arguing the facts and eventually even his most bitter enemies saw that he was right. Poor old Neville Chamberlain literally died (11/1940)of a broken heart when he saw the truth, as the Germans were overhead bombing London. Chamberlain died from shame because he saw that because he could not see the facts and act upon them when he had had the opportunity to do so-the civilized world was in a fight for its life.
The facts of Jihad and that Islam is a religion of intolerance to other religious beliefs is winning the day. The Neville Chamberlains have the stage only for now.
Freewoman - for VooDoo to work the target has to know he/she's a target.
We need to start using their ignorance and rigidity to our advantage. Start rumors, play one side against the other, 'mess with their heads'... coca cola has pig fat extract in it for flavoring.... the earthquakes in Iran are messages from Allah - and the proof is in the arrangment of mud bricks in the village of ShortDorkDong.... more stuff like that.
Also, we need to get all the hackers out there to get busy and take their communications out... It doesn't need to be organized or professional - my goodness - we've got enough 17-year-old cyberpunks and script kiddies out there to wreak havoc if we just point them in the right direction!
More creative thinking... we're good at it and many of us like to f@#$ with people's heads anyway... Why not enlist the help of all the miscreants and misfits out there? A sort of hacker corps....
Denver, I didn't mean spit in their food.
A spit, open fire, pig slowly roasting, turning slowly........
I might fool one with pork, but I would never spit in one's food. That's gross.
Well, then , Denver..."WHEW!!!"

I read your article on "More Menus for Muslims", but I am afraid I could not get angry about this one.
The whole point about the U.S. is that we caterfor EVERYONE , that is why we enjoy such a variety.
Pete;
What angers me is the fact that Americans are jumping through hoops to satisfy Muslims, and they return the favor by cursing us. Yes, we are a diverse country and we cater to each other. But when American soverngty is threatened, we're all Americans!!! We have Koreatowns, Chinatowns. We have different neighborhoods where you can eat food from the many various ehnicities in our country. I love gyroes from Greektown here in Chicago. Calimare' from Little Italy. A good berrito or taco from the "Little Village." Or a good plate of "soul food" in my old neighborhood on the Westside of Chicago.
Now there are some that I've yet to try. But not all food is my cup-o-tea. I'm not a vegitarian, so I'm not big on tofu. We live in a country where we can taste and eat all kinds of foods. No one is left out, including Muslims. We had a restaurant opened by the Nation of Islam. But after six months it closed. Black Muslims wouldn't even support their own restaurant. A business should not have to give up who they are just to please a group of people that have dietary hang ups. If I want soul food, I go to a "soul food" restaurant. When I want Chinese food, I go to Chinatown. So on and so forth. I don't go to McDonald's and ask for a whopper with chesse. If a Muslim walks into an IHOP and demands that they stop serving bacon, ham, and sausage because they show up, their in for a big dissapointment. I love ham with my pancakes. The thing about having variety is that you can choose to eat whatever you want at any give time. In Chicago, we have the worlds largest taste test called "the Taste of Chicago!" If nothing else, this is a showing of all the diverse foods that you can eat in our city. If anyone out there is ever in the "Windy City" in late June, the week before the 4th of July, go to Grant Park and you'll see what I'm talking about.
So you do have to change your menus to cater to any group.
I meant, you don't have to change your menus to cater to any group.
Well, Mr. Downer, you certainly make me want to give you a big hug and kiss.
Thank you very much, Australia!
Ironman Hondo
"But when American soverngty is threatened, we're all Americans!,
Yes I totally agree with this
As for Grant Park I will definitely take a visit, next time I am in the Windy city..
oh, please:
Enterprise is an American value. Kosher food is sold in supermarkets everywheres, and lots of food companies are signing up for certification not because of some "Zionist plot", but because there is a 5-million consumer market with a 15% annual growth rate. The consumer market for Kosher food includes American Muslims, and there is also an estimated $12 billion dollar market for Halal food in the US.
I don't know about American Muslims joining any boycotts for OBL, we learned everything we needed to know about him on 9/11. If I see or hear anyone trying to aid his cause, they can enjoy their one-way ticket to Homeland Security.
Mr Downer is not a racist or an islamophobe.
I think the government here has seen what is happening in Europe etc and doesn't want it happening here.
Also, remember Australia has been hit by "2 Bali's". I think we get the picture!
As for Jews being powerful in Hollywood - yes some Hollywood players are as are Scientologists, but Rupert Murdoch is not Jewish, and neither was Kerry Packer, (media mogul in Australia who recently passed away).
I think movie makers don't have quite the impact of daily news and television. Speilberg was disappointing with "Munich".It was not truthfully done, and was a poor "007" genre movie, IMHO. Thankfully it didn't do all that well.
OT,,,Freewoman: I saw that movie "Osama" recently. How depressing! How awful it must be for many muslim women around the world. If they could be galvanised in some way it would make a huge difference!
I wonder if China isn't abetting Khartoum in this somehow. First, Sudan has been found to possess large petroleum reserves and China has now been a major oil customer of the Sudanese government's for some time. China has also buddied up recently with the Iranian government behind closed doors concerning oil deals (as has India)--and Iran's military has long been providing logistical support for the Sudanese-Arab mujahidin so there is a possibility that Iran is obtaining financial backing for this war from Beijing behind closed doors. China has expressed warmth for the regime in Khartoum and has means, motive, and opportunity for advancing its strategic interests in Sudan. So given Beijing's horrible record on human rights (if not outright contempt on the subject)no one should be surprised if Beijing is working with Khartoum and against those who would intervene against its genocidal pogroms in Darfur and the southern reaches.
