And I am confident that nary a person in the room dared ask Edina Lekovic about the fact that rather than regarding women as human beings equal to men, the Qur'an likens a woman to a field (tilth), to be used by a man as he wills: "Your women are a tilth for you (to cultivate) so go to your tilth as ye will" (2:223). It declares that a woman's testimony is worth half that of a man: "Get two witnesses, out of your own men, and if there are not two men, then a man and two women, such as ye choose, for witnesses, so that if one of them errs, the other can remind her" (2:282). It allows men to marry up to four wives, and have sex with slave girls also: "If ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly with the orphans, marry women of your choice, two or three or four; but if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one, or (a captive) that your right hands possess, that will be more suitable, to prevent you from doing injustice" (4:3). It rules that a son's inheritance should be twice the size of that of a daughter: "Allah (thus) directs you as regards your children's (inheritance): to the male, a portion equal to that of two females" (4:11). Worst of all, the Qur’an tells husbands to beat their disobedient wives: "Men are in charge of women, because Allah hath made the one of them to excel the other, and because they spend of their property (for the support of women). So good women are the obedient, guarding in secret that which Allah hath guarded. As for those from whom ye fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and scourge them" (4:34). It allows for marriage to pre-pubescent girls, stipulating that Islamic divorce procedures “shall apply to those who have not yet menstruated” (65:4).
But I'm sure there was no mention of any of this at the University of Texas at Austin. It would have spoiled the lovefest. From the Daily Texan, with thanks to the Constantinopolitan Irredentist:
Women have a place of respect and honor in Islam, despite popular misconceptions, a spokeswoman for the Muslim Public Affairs Council said Thursday. Edina Lekovic, said women have historically had an important role in Islam. The Quran grants women the right to divorce their husbands, to inherit property and to choose whom they marry, she said in a speech Thursday hosted by the Muslim Student's Association.
"Within the Quran itself, not only were women granted rights, they were granted revolutionary rights within that historical context," Lekovic said.
Muslim women should assert themselves as they strive for equal rights, Lekovic said.
"The struggle that Muslim women are dealing with is very much like the struggle of women around the world," she said.
Lekovic was raised a Muslim, she said. But it was not until college that she looked into different religions and chose to practice Islam. She chose to wear the hijab, the traditional head scarf of Muslim women, due to its symbolic power, she said.
"It is simply a symbol of modesty, insofar as a woman is to be respected for her mind, for her intelligence, for what she has to offer the world, rather than for her body or for her sexuality," Lekovic said.
Zahra Yusufali, a member of the Muslim Students' Association, also wears the hijab.
"Muslim men look at women through their heart," said Yusufali, an applied learning and development freshman.
Sarah Yusufali, Zahra's twin who is also a member of the association, said one misconception she would like to correct is the idea that Muslims support the activities of Saddam Hussein.
"Killing of any sort is against Islam," said Yusufali.
Oh brother. Killing of any sort? Even of unbelievers, wherever you find them (cf. Qur'an 2:190-2:193; 9:5; 9:111; 47:4, etc. etc. etc.)?
Yes, I totally agree with the fact that a muslim woman in Texas has rights to marry and are treated well in islam.
No, she's kidding herself if she thinks women have rights in muslim countries.
She should be thankful she's in Texas.
Whether the subject is women, terrorism, or freedom of speech, there's always one common theme: "misconceptions."
For some bizarre reason, everyone in the world has all sorts of misconceptions about Islam that aren't true at all! You have to wonder, where do these misconceptions come from, and why are Islam apologists always trying to explain how everyone's got it all wrong? You don't see people constantly repeating that Christianity and Buddhism are religions of peace, because it can be easily seen that both religions are overwhelmingly benign, so there's no need to keep stating the obvious.
If things like multiculturalism and Islam were 100% OK and great for everyone, I don't think it would be necessary to tirelessly and constantly point out that they're 100% OK and great for everyone (while censoring, intimidating or assassinating anyone who thinks otherwise).
"Within the Quran itself, not only were women granted rights, they were granted revolutionary rights within that historical context," Lekovic said.
As far as I know, that was in the 7th century and I do suspect other societies have advanced a bit since, so the alleged revolutionary rights might be somewhat outdated.
Are these taqqiya artists Bosnian? Or Albanian?
So much for the Albanian or Bosnian Muslims are moderate, and judt fighting Serbia...
Robert,
No wonder after reading an article like the one above that you have posted, one comes away wondering how many contradictions Islam has.
Islamists will spend more time trying to convince non-Muslims that there's nothing wrong rather than police their own ranks. It's the nature of the beast so-to-speak.
All of this reads as "take it for face value".."trust me". Nothing in there that provides any sort of evidence to what they are saying as truths. Not even a Quranic passage..how weak...
Makes you wonder how they live with themselves. If you HAVE to lie about your religion, then there is a problem with that religion.
The woman in Texas can say islam is great because she lives in a free country and can leave that cult anytime she pleases. If her husband beats her, she can call the police and get him arrested. If he keeps her captive in her home, he can go to jail. If she chooses to go without a veil or wear a bikini, she won't have to worry about the religious police.
Maybe people who turn to islam should be forced to go live in a muslim country where sharia is enforced and let them REALLY learn about islam.
Let these women walk a mile in a REAL muslim woman's shoes.
"Killing of any sort is against Islam," said Yusufali. So what is going on all over the planet, then? The RoP®,

Better yet, a real burka, with optional pot on head, six children at feet and one in belly.

Unfortunately for all Muslims who have been returning back to the pure faith, Muslims in Middle eastern countries have already created an image of Islam that is outdated. Haven't we all had family that exhibted behavior different than ours? Must we be judged by their behavior? Again, unfortunately, for the rest of us Muslims who follow Islam, we are. No matter how much we cry out that Muslim in Middle eastern countries are practicing a cultured and ethnocentric version of Islam, people won't be able to hear it because it is difficult to open a mind to a subject that has been made and is so ugly in the media and public. We live in a Christian dominated society and anything that deviates from it is considered abnormal. That is our mindset. Islam has a logic for its laws such as giving the son half of the inheritance( because he's the one responsible for financially supporting the family). No matter what laws there are in Islam, there's a reason for it if you can only try to approach to understand it with an open eye. But again, it is hard to put aside our prejudices(no blame, it's human nature), which is unfortunate for the Muslims who are trying to return to the true Islam - a universal religion of peace.
I take it then, Lighthearted, that honor killings, rape, beheadings, killing infidels (man woman or child), female genital mutilation, women being second class citizens, incest, jihad is alright by you??? That's true islam honey. It's in the koran.
And if you want to return to true islam, this is what you want to return to. And don't say islam isn't that way.
IT'S IN THE KORAN!! And your hadith's and sura's.
If you need to worship, please, please worship in a religion that doesn't condone the above. Worship a God that forgives, even your enemies, and that teaches tolerance and love.
Islam is a cult. And that is the only truth.
Islam's Prophet Mohammed said: "I have seen that majority of the dwellers of the hell-fire were women,(because) they are ungreatful to their husbands and they are deficient in intelligence"

If you want to see LIVE how they execute a Islamic Woman for her fault (!) of a rape in a open market place,go to this site:

Sorry-I don't know how to activate the above site
Sofia.
Unbeknownst to ole mo, the reasons these women would be ungrateful to their husbands....
1. Forced marriages to men that are either too old or gross or just plain vile.
2. Women are cut as girls and have no desire for sex.
3. Forced sex.
4. Forced pregnancies. No birth control options.
5. Beatings.
6. Imprisonment in their own homes.
7. Not wanting to take sloppy seconds.
8. Taking other wives.
9. Being treated as less than livestock.
10. Having no say in any one aspect of her life. And also having to cover themselves because men don't take responsility for their own actions. Incestual relationships with their children.
I could go on.
Europe may be rooted in Christianity, but as far as I can see the religion itself isn't a notable factor in the lives of most people, and in many European countries there is too much tolerance. So no, we don't consider everything non-Christian to be abnormal. The common person may consider slavery, terrorism and racism to be abnormal, though.
No amount of lipstick will make that pig of Islam kosher.
The Mohammedan poster above attempts just that:
"...We live in a Christian dominated society and anything that deviates from it is considered abnormal. That is our mindset. Islam has a logic for its laws..."
"...Islam, there's a reason for it if you can only try to approach to understand it with an open eye. But again, it is hard to put aside our prejudices..."
A bit of da'awa and the usual Mohammedan BS.
Here on JW/DW we have had plenty of eye-openers, and prejudices have been replaced by sheer horror of such a perverse & inhuman belief-system such as Mohammeds cult of Islam.
Why do you live in a Christian dominated society? If you feel that Islam is the way for you, you have many countries to choose and move to.
Goodbye & good riddance.
Lighthearted, PLEASE.
Saying that "Muslims in Middle eastern countries are practicing a cultured and ethnocentric version of Islam" is a riot! I guess muslims in Iceland or Japan practice islam perfectly, huh?
What a luxury for you to be a muslim living outside the islamic world! You don't have to deal with the results of your belief-system permeating every aspect of life for hundreds of years.
You get to benefit from the innumerable advances (technological, scientific, educational, political, economic, health, etc.)of people who ARE NOT practitioners of "The universal religion of peace" while educating them on how wonderful your religion is and please, "pay no attention to those people behind the islamic curtain! They've got it all wrong!"
"No matter how much we cry out that Muslim in Middle eastern countries are practicing a cultured and ethnocentric version of Islam"
-- from a posting above
The claim that the passages in Qur'an and Hadith, do not naturally lead to the kinds of behavior Muslims -- in the Middle East, and elsewhere in Dar al-Islam, and even within the Bilad al-kufr, exhibit, again and again, and that all the problems of Islamic behavior originate not in the clear tenets, attitudes, atmospherics, of Islam, but are merely a matter of "culture" and "ethnicity." As in: "the mistreatment of women in Saudi Arabia or Iran or the Sudan or Pakistan or anywhere else in the Muslim world is a cultural, not a religious, matter."
How much of this nonsense is one expected to listen to?
The paradoxical irony here is it's only practised in Western nations that aren't Islamic or ruled by Mullah and Sharia-law.
But In canada, CAIR is still pushing for Shria-law for all female Muslims( I say this beacuse I can't find any hardships for men under the family laws in canada for Muslims).

That STILL makes me laugh everytime I read it

lighthearted,
If Islam treats women well why all the above information which looks like the treatment goes in the opposite direction?
You also post that Islam is peaceful, then I got an old bridge in NYC that I want to sell to you.
I believe FGM is in the spirit of - rather than in - the Koran.
Why don't these people go and work it out with the scholars of Islam, then try to convince the infidels? I mean, Islam doesn't kill apostates, right? So debate it with the scholars, the mullahs, the imams, and get them to change the Sharia. Islam treats women honorably, right? So, change that in the Muslim society first. Let all Muslim women have education, and let them have the right to divorce. Oh, and if you want her back, don't force her to sleep with another first before remarriage. Etc. Etc.
Why spend all this time convincing the infidels, when the people that you need to convince are first of all your Muslim jurists?
"Whether the subject is women, terrorism, or freedom of speech, there's always one common theme: "misconceptions.""
Yes, let's get this right:
1. If we attack you, it's your own fault.
2. If you complain about being attacked, you're an islamophobe.
3. If we violate human rights, it's none of your business.
4. If you think we violate human rights, you're an islamophobe with 'misconceptions'. etc...
Here you go Sofia,

Two words. B. S.
I'll have my taqqiya 'on the rocks'.
No I don't believe her.
A girl who has had her clitoris removed can still experience orgasm.. It is called the G Spot.
And believe it or not a man who has had his sexual organs removed can still have an orgasm, so long as he has a prostate gland.
The nature of the orgasm is a "mystery" because talk of it is taboo and not socially acceptable, and it is getting worse thanks to the puritanical mindset of monotheism.
Good books to read about how women are honoured in islam.........................
' Nine Parts of Desire' by Geraldine Brooks
and
' Slave ' by Mende Nazer and Damien Lewis
Nariz, come on, how many men do you know that can find the G-spot?
They might as well be looking for the Holy Grail.
The woman in Texas can say islam is great because she lives in a free country and can leave that cult anytime she pleases.
She probably says it's great because it gets her out of the house and enjoying some modicum of freedom. If she didn't repeat the approved taqiyya propaganda, she'd likely never see the light of day. Probably some sort of survival mechanism. If I'm a good girl, and say the things they want me to, I can go out and go to school and stuff. Wow, such freedom!
The Quran grants women the right to divorce their husbands, ...
But what happens when she divorces her husband? Social ostracism, or like in some cases, death by "honor"-killing. So the low rate of Muslim divorce would be due to what? Progressive Islamic thinking, or basic terror?
Carolyn2-Thanks a lot for activating the" faithfreedom.org site.
Anyone can read the real plight of these Muslim woman in the above site, which are actually written by former Muslim women.
how pathetic this Texas muslim women can try to explain how nice it is to be braindead islam. she might try to explain that to some saudi why going around that rock.. if she's lucky she will be stampeded to death, out of her misery!
