April 12 (Bloomberg) -- Iran, defying United Nations Security Council demands to halt its nuclear program, may be capable of making a nuclear bomb within 16 days, a U.S. State Department official said.Iran will move to ``industrial scale'' uranium enrichment involving 54,000 centrifuges at its Natanz plant, the Associated Press quoted deputy nuclear chief Mohammad Saeedi as telling state-run television today.
``Using those 50,000 centrifuges they could produce enough highly enriched uranium for a nuclear weapon in 16 days,'' Stephen Rademaker, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for International Security and Nonproliferation, told reporters today in Moscow.
One acts now or one lives in regret, speaking retroactively about the halcyon days when "we could have been free" or when "we once had the opportunity" - negotiation and appeasement - the language of losers.

What no media mentions is that the main problem of Iran issue is China, and to lesser extent Russia. US should put embargo on China and cut all economic trade with them. But wait, on this same site recently it was stated that the Ukranians sold functional nuclear warheads to Iran years ago. On this same site, it was stated that Iran has tested missles that are capable of multiple warhead delivery. That means Iran has had advanced nuclear weapons for years. Maybe this is why there was such a tepid response to Iran's nuclear, errr..., "development" program. Maybe it was the Russian warheads acting as insurance for the council of 12 and President Anti-Christ. Could this be the reason that we havent seen the military response from Israel or the Western Allies.
Let's assume those maybe's are fact, then re-think the consequences of military intervention in Iran's, errr..., development program. Let's assume that warheads can, today, be delivered to targets in Israel, western europe, and were smuggled into the US. And finally, lets assume if we dont act, Iran will supply the newly "developed" nuclear weapons to terrorists to support worldwide jihad.
Maybe, I'm right and this is a real no win situation. You are the President, what would you do?

Maybe the moniker should have read August 16, 1939 alert, because that date is 16 days away from September 1, 1939 - the day German forces invaded Poland. But enough of the cheeseparing. The fact is - the Iranians have excelled in the black arts of playing time with naive Western diplomats and the dhimmies of our population. It seems that time is very short to strike and strike hard - whether it is 16 days, 160 days or 1,600 days. To think folks mocked the Israelis when they claimed Iran was only six months to one year away from the bomb. This proves beyond all doubt that Kofi Annan is the worst bar none - at least twice as bad as the next worst - in the long line of undistinguished UN General Secretaries. He has allowed himself to be fooled, but he's not alone. Of course those demented lefties and that assorted ragbag of dysfunctional antisemites will be licking their lips at the thought of an Israel in ruins from end to end - but end to end in that tiny country is 200 miles in one direction and 10 miles in the other.
My concern is where these nuclear weapons end up. Just one bomb in the wrong hands is a BIG problem for the United States, Europe, Australia, Canada and Israel.
Iran's leaders don't exactly have a good traffic record when it comes to playing fair.

Yes, Mad Ahmadinejad is putting on quite the dog-and-pony show, and probably most of it is for local consumption. Not long ago, DebkaNet cited an Israeli source that determined that Iran's program was not moving along nearly as quickly as the Iranians want the world to believe (in their Islamic omnipotence) because work started much earlier than generally believed. I think the time line was 5 - 10 years off from having enough material for a bomb.
Meanwhile, as Amir Taheri points out, the facilities being built are located on fault lines in a part of the world that experiences major earthquakes once every 10 years; the engineering specs may fall way short of what is required and there's no planning for safe disposal of nuclear waste and thus likely an enormous environmental risk for nations with coasts along the Persian Gulf.
I find it hard to believe that if they have 164 centrifuges at the moment where the heck are they going to get the other 54,000 so quickly...
But it's not like they are the most truthful liars either.

My advice to President Bush is to pick a nice quiet stretch of isolated desert in Iran and send a message by turning into a glass pit with one of our lowest level tactical nukes.
The proliferation and eventual use of nuke warfare is inevitable. International diplomacy and the IAEA have proven a joke of determent, and have only provided time and cover for Iran. Assuming the mullahs aren't so dumb as to actually use a nuke, the THREAT of use will be their biggest leverage. Let's neutralize the leverage by showing that we aren't afraid to follow through with our threat. This should go a long way with N. Korea and whomever is next in line with delusions of nuclear grandeur. Maybe we missed an opportunity to do this in Afganistan?

The understanding on estimates comes from understanding how atomic weapons are made. Uranium contains only .001% weapons-grade isotope. The isotope is extracted through a centrifuge machine (other ways also exist). The centrifuge machine extracts the tiny bit of useful material - but, it requires thousands of passes per unit of uranium.
So you cascade these machines in stages. The public announcment by Iran was regarding the factory that has only 164 of these machines. Assuming average industrial capacity, and 24 hour running, the 100 tonnes of Uranium would require 13 years of cascading to produce enough material for several bombs. Bombs need 90% encrichment. Using it for electrical-power-generation can operate on significantly less enrichment.
However, the announcment also said that Iran was soon moving to a 3,000 machine setup within a year. The US weapons program of the 40s used a "several thousand stage" process, and required only 20 months from start to finish to make enough weapons-grade material.
They also said that they were planning to build a 50,000 unit factory. At 50,000 stages, it would take only 16 hours to produce 20kg of weapons-grade Uranium. {Or, in their view, they could have a steady stream of nuclear-fuel...}
So there's the overview on explaining the wildly varying statements on aquiring bomb materials. The scariest part of the statement makes assumptions that no millitary "centrifuge" machines exist.
It is wise to assume that Iran has seperate facilitie(s) for millitary enrichment - especially considering that they were able to sucessfully step into industrial scale enrichment on the first public "attempt". It is wise to assume that these plants were built soon after the Shah's overthrow. That would give 15 to 20 years of head-start time.
It is wise to assume that there has been a pan-Arab shell-game that says "I'll refine to a specific level of enrichment, and you take it to the next level. Then you ship it to so/so who will weaponize it...." Thus, each country has met the very letter of every UN requirement for a country to not make nuclear weapons, but all will have access to these weapons when needed. The A.Q.Khan "network" is the clearest sign of that shell game.

I say the same. Coordinating 50,000 cascading uranium enrichment centrifuges is no easy task. You're dealing with lethal fluorine and venting that from underground? I hope they have many Muslim work accidents at Natanz. But they'll have enough hooked up to make them a menace.

4 teens arraigned on 2nd-degree murder in death of NYU student

NEW YORK (AP) -- Four teenagers accused of chasing a New York University student into the path of a car that killed him have been arraigned on charges of second-degree murder.
The four, one arraigned late Sunday and three arraigned Monday in Manhattan Criminal Court, remained jailed without bail pending their next court appearances. Andre Johnson, 15, Humberto Guzman, 13, and Denzell Fell, 13, were told to return on May 14, and Hassan Mayfield, 15, on May 13.

A further comment on enrichment from the president Ahmadinejad from Iran.
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, speaking Thursday to university students and officials in Iran's Khorassan Razavi province, said Iran would step up its uranium enrichment program. He reiterated that the program is for energy purposes.
He also dismissed ElBaradei's (head of IAEA) call for a temporary halt to uranium enrichment.
Any concessions made by Iran would be used against it, and "No one can ever force us to back down an inch from the path that we are currently treading," Ahmadinejad said, according to IRNA.(Iran Republic News Agency)
He added that Iran's "right to nuclear energy is non-negotiable."
