A federal jury on Tuesday convicted a 23-year-old man of supporting terrorists by attending an al-Qaida training camp in Pakistan three years ago.Hamid Hayat, a seasonal farm worker in Lodi, an agricultural town south of Sacramento, was convicted of one count of providing material support to terrorists and three counts of lying to the FBI.
The verdict came hours after a separate jury hearing a case against the man's father deadlocked, forcing the judge to declare a mistrial.
The father, 48-year-old ice cream truck driver Umer Hayat, is charged with two counts of lying to the FBI about his son's involvement in the training camp. Defense attorneys and prosecutors will meet in court May 5 to decide whether he will be retried.
Both men are U.S. citizens and stood trial in federal court before separate juries. They have been in custody since their arrests last June....
Prosecutors described Hamid Hayat as having "a jihadi heart and a jihadi mind" who returned from a two-year visit to Pakistan intent on carrying out attacks. Possible targets included hospitals, banks and grocery stores....
Their biggest hurdle was trying to persuade jurors to discount the men's videotaped confessions. The statements were given separately last June during lengthy interrogations by the FBI in Sacramento.
Defense lawyers said the confessions were made under duress, after the men had been questioned for hours in the middle of the night.
The father and son eventually told the agents merely what they thought they wanted to hear, without realizing the legal consequences, their lawyers argued....
That investigation ultimately fizzled, but it did lead agents to Naseem Khan. The 32-year-old former Lodi resident was working a variety of fast-food and convenience store jobs in rural Oregon when agents approached him in October 2001, just a month after the terrorist attacks.
Khan, a Pakistani native who moved to the U.S. as a teenager, was recruited to infiltrate Lodi's Pakistani community.
He initially investigated the money laundering allegations and then targeted a pair of local imams before finally befriending Hamid Hayat. The Hayats grew to eventually consider Khan almost a member of the family.
After Hamid Hayat left for Pakistan in spring 2003, Khan kept in touch and recorded their telephone calls _ some of which show Khan urging Hayat to attend a jihadi camp.
In one conversation, Khan exhorted Hayat to "be a man _ do something!"

And there was another case in the paper today about someone else accused of terrorism who had either been, or tried to be, the driver of an ice cream truck (not Umer Hayat).
What is it about those fudgesicles? Surely in the big movie about Muslim terrorism that everyone should be writing, there must be a drive-on role for that ice-cream truck, gaily-sinisterly sounding its bell as it winds down Main Street, past Elm Street, past Maple, past Liberty Lane.

The conviction of Hamid Hayet is more important than many of the JW/DW readers realize. It may have little or no bearing on the behavior of committed jihadis in other parts of the country, in other cells. But every time a terror-suspect is convicted in a US court, it does act as a deterrant on the behavior of those Muslims who are not yet terrorists, but who fantasize about abandoning their private lives and joining the jihad against America.
For me, it harkens back to the murder of Jewish militant Mier Kahane on the streets of NY back in 1990. From this single act of terrorism grew an entire home-grown cell, dedicated to the destruction of important New York landmarks including the Holland Tunnel.
The perpetrator of Kahane's murder, a Jordanian-Palestinian called El Sayyid Nosair, was seen by several eye-witnesses near the body with a smoking gun, was chased from the scene, fired on his pursuers and was eventually captured. But during his trial, his defense team weaved this incredulous tale of Nosair being the unwitting fall-guy of a larger conspiracy.
Yes he was indeed in possession of the murder weapon, his lawyer conceded, but he wasn't the one who pulled the trigger. This was apparently done by an unseen hand. Since none of the eye witnesses actually saw Nosair pull the trigger, this gullible jury of 12 men and women actually bought into the defense story and found him innocent of murder, but convicted him of city weapons violations.
Here's where the story takes on broader ramification. The conspirators of the first WTC attack in 1994 were confederates of Nosair. They were obviously influenced by the jury acquittal of murder charges against him. They surmised that if he was found innocent while literally holding the smoking gun, then the American criminal justice system was effectively broken and that they could plan and execute their terrorism with very little chance of being convicted.
After the bombing of the WTC in which 5 people died (but thousands more might have), the conspiracy was unravelled by competent investigators who were able to identify the VIN number from the wreakage of the van used in the massive explosion. After a lengthy trial, when guilty verdicts were announced in court, these conspirators shouted and cursed the jury as if reacting in shock and anger at a completely unexpected outcome. In fact, for them, it was.
Nosair was linked to the conspiracy via recorded jailhouse conversations with his visiting friends and is now spending life in prison. The criminal justice system worked that day. But on the day it failed, during the Kahane murder trial, it created an impetus for further terrorism that should be a cautionary tale as we proceed in this war against civilization.
No one wants to see an innocent man convicted of a crime. But everytime an obviously guilty man walks, whether a killer, a wife-beater, a child-abuser or a terrorist, often because of the gullibility or agenda of a single jurist, the word is out to those who would do us harm: it's open season on America.

I thought they were both going to walk. I live near Lodi and the local media had joined in with the MSM and NPR about how weak the case against them was. We need a law against sending your kid to summer camp in Pakistan. Save us all a lot of grief. Send them maybe instead to one of those Oregonian training camps. Save California the cost of a trial.

Egypt Bombings Linked to Earlier Attacks

CAIRO, Egypt (AP) -- Two suicide attackers targeting international peacekeepers and police blew themselves up Wednesday, two days after nearly simultaneous bombings killed at least 21 people at a resort in the Sinai Peninula.
Egyptian Interior Minister Habib el-Adly said all the blasts this week were linked to terror attacks against Sinai resorts last year and in 2004.

I've been checking this site for the past few weeks, and I must say I am impressed with the knowledge and insight of Robert and Hugh, as well as a few of the other posters. The study has begun in earnest...as they say, forewarned is forearmed.
However, what concerns me is what strange bedfellows need to band together to effectively combat Islam in the West. With all the vitriolic hype in politics, it seems nearly impossible to concieve of Jews, Christians and atheists, Conservatives and Liberals, labor and industry, to come to a PC-free consensus on what to do about Islamists. Even speaking or writing as frankly as I see here seems taboo, whether from fear or unwillingness to consider its truthfulness. Any pointers on how to gently nudge the unwilling would be helpful. At any rate, keep up the good work, this issue needs to get off the back burner.

Any consensus would have to be PC-free! I've despised the concept of Political Correctness from the moment it stopped being a joke. It seems like it would be easier to take "Peanuts" Linus's blanket away from him, than to wrench from the American public its death grip on PC.
Everyone seems so determined to do the "right thing" in the miniature, that they just can't see the proverbial Big Picture.
Me, I'm at a complete loss, when it comes to liberating the PC enslaved. I think it's possible to do so-- I think this blog proves that. (I've started my own little blog, but it's nothing like JW, which is phenomenal!)
To paraphrase Orwell: "If there is hope, it lies within the proles." That would be us, I guess. It's hard to get the ear of any of the big people. An uprising of the citizenry may be the only thing that forces the government(s) to take notice.
Why are we, here in the land of the free and the home of the brave, so afraid to do this? Because the wretched policy of Political Correctness is now entangled with our jobs and livelihoods. There really are Thought Police, and brother let me tell you, they are not kidding!
Protests and marches aren't illegal (yet), but there are more followers (myself included) than there are leaders. We need leaders. Our desperation will become despair, without them.
