The government ordered an indoor marketplace in Haa Dhaal, Kulhudhuffushi to be dismantled last week because the building was donated by “people in opposition to the government” and “Christians.”The $70,000 marketplace was built by Tracy Structures, a UK construction company, and facilitated by Maldives Aid, a UK-based tsunami charity.
The building, part of Maldives Aid’s tsunami relief work, is designed to allow locals to buy and sell fish and other produce. It was finished in March and was due to be handed over to the island community in an opening ceremony this month.
The largest post-tsunami construction project in the atoll looks in jeopardy, though, after the Minister for Fisheries, Abdullah Kamaluddeen, ordered the Kulhudhuffushi Island Chief to destroy the building for political reasons.
“AK visited the island a few weeks ago. He told the Island Chief ‘this building has to come down.’ When the Island Chief asked why, AK said ‘this was built by people opposed to the government… they cause trouble… and the building is not good for this purpose,’” Maldives Aid coordinator Mariyam Seena told Minivan News.
The Kulhudhuffushi Island Chief, Moosa Ali, added that central government sees the steel building as a ploy to “spread evil principles in Maldives.”
Maldives Aid is the sister organization of UK-based Friends of Maldives (FOM), a pressure group that campaigns against human rights abuses in Maldives.
Although the two organizations are officially separate, the government has bent over backwards to make Maldives Aid’s work difficult - impounding tsunami aid, obstructing projects and refusing the NGO registration.
They continually accuse the trustee of the charity, David Hardingham, of ‘Christian Missionary’ work but blacklisted him from the country last year on suspicion of ‘Islamic terrorism.’
Speaking from the island, locals accused the government of playing petty politics with their lives.
“If the government can’t stand Christian money, they should give back all the aid the European Union gives them,” a local man told Minivan Radio.
Oh well never mind, revenge is sweet, the effects of rising sea waters will drown the islands and then we will all see how much their "brothers in islam" in the arab world come to their rescue.
I bet they won't be half as quick as they were to forcefully convert them to islam about 800 odd years ago from Buddhism by beheading the royal familiy and the buddhist monks.
No doubt the dhimmi Indian government will rescue them.

It's also a major destination for scuba divers, who come for the fabulous coral reefs and the wealth of marine life. But it's not a place for low budget backpackers or amateur anthropologists who want to travel independently and live as the locals do."

How bad are things in Maldives, compared to other Islamic countries? I feel bad that the regime there has always been backed by the Indian government as a means of keeping Pakistani influence at bay.

Also, is Maldives in danger of submerging due to higher ocean levels, as was reported a while ago in one of the global warming updates?

Actually, one thing I will say - callous as they may be with the lives of their citizens, at least they put their money where their mouth is by refusing to use donations of infidels.
They should follow through by returning all that money, like the Minivan Radio interviewee said.

Infidel Pride - wrong. Without the money of tens of thousands of rich Italian tourists - the Maldives are notoriously the ultimate in snobbish expenditure in my country - this third world country could not pay for the fuel in their ferries, let alone market centres and so on. This is not only evil, but stupid and pretentious; the truth is that this archipelago is wholly dependent on foreign and mostly infidel money - Indian support, European tourism, and aid. We should cut it off forthwith, except that then they would all board ships and claim asylum in Europe.
Glad I gave my money during the tsunami aid hysteria to the local food bank instead of pouring into the ingrate rat hole of boo-hoo-hoo jihad, anywhere, for any supposedly "humanitarian" reasons.
For there to be "humanitarian" work, first there have to be actual humans.

The very source of Maldive's survival are :Tourism,and fishing industry.The modrn methods of fishing technology was importedthe Christian West,and most ot the tourists are from the Christian Western countries. Yet,these inhabitants has that' Muslim Arrogance' in them. Most of them are forced converts,Budhists,and hindus from Kerala,India.
They must thank their Allah for not making the infedals around the world as heartless as themselves. If the Christian countries cancell all their aids,and the transfer of technical 'know hows',these tiney dots of lands on the face of earth will starve to death. The only 'know hows' these people can teach the world is: suicide bombings, Takqyya- how to act like friends,while planning to slit their throats, and how to shout "Aalla akbur" after every slaughter of an innocent soul.
Don't think for a moment that those idiots who gave Tsunami aid will get the message, though.

What exactly were you contradicting (not that I mind)? I didn't assert that Indians were #1 tourists in Maldives, afaik, Indians don't go there. The only support is government to government, and in this case, the reason the Indian government supports Maldives government is that there isn't a substitute Infidel population that could back a non-Islamic regime. It's partly the desire to keep Pakistan out, and partly India's own regional vanity and arrogance of being the main regional "superpower" in South Asia.
There is a similar archipelago off the Indian coast called Lakshwadeep, which too has a majority Muslim population, and is an union terretory in India. It doesn't figure much even in the Indian news.
Wasn't the so-called PLO a major owner of Maldivian tourist resorts?

I'm not - the Infidels in Phuket and Galle desperately needed it. Although I wish there was an option whereby we could have targeted where that went - Thailand, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, et al. That way, we could have donated to those we cared about.

Things are not as bad yet as Pakistan. But in the last 30 years large numbers of Maldivians have been educated in Pakistan, Egypt, Saudi, Malaysia in mostly Islamic studies. So now there are large numbers of Wahhabi preachers and Islamic fundamentalism is the fastest growing thing here.
Maldives used to be a very mellow place with a Hindu/Buddhist tradition and background.
All this changed when the current dictator Azhar university educated Islamic teacher Maumoon Abdel Qayoom took power in 1978 in a covert coup using guns and indimidation supplied by his Arab sponsors.
In his authorized biography "Man for all islands" by Royston Ellis he boasts of his friendship with Saddam, Arafat and Gaddafi and of his admiration for Sayyid Qutb.
During the eighties the PLO ran a tourist resort operation and the national airline. He is alleged to have smuggled guns to arm the Tamil Tiger rebels in Sri Lanka. During this time the yacht "Nabila" belonging to Adnan Kashoggi was in the harbor and the airline was making unsheduled flights.
The Maldives recognized Israel on gaining independence from the British Protectorate, but this was reversed by pressure from the Qayoom gang. When Qayoom took power he introduced the islamic anti-semitism into the school curriculum. Every Ramadan Gayoom brings Arabic preachers to teach "true" islam to Maldivians.
Today, although Maldives has recognized Israel again, 99% of Maldivians blame and curse the Jews for all their percieved problems.
Liberated maldivians are surprised that the west has been fooled by this cruel dictator who likes to pretend he is an "intellectual. Many of his activities - his cult of personality, the only state run TV etc resemble the North Korean leader in many ways....i could go on and on...

Country depends on European and East Asian tourists.
Qayoom plays India and China. India helps him and so does China. Supposedly there are talks with the Chinese about leasing some reefs for a submarine base. This is why India is so friendly. Indians know that there is no Pak influence politically here. Only the fundamentalism from Pakistan has taken root here.

If you're still reading this (before this item disappears into the Archives), get out of there, for good. Move to an Infidel country, get rid of the Arabic part of your name (or better still, assume a completely new name that leaves no trace that you're an apostate), and start fresh.
A part of me feels sad that the islands will disappear as the ocean level rises. I hope that like minded people like you make it out of there safely. As for the fanatics, what happens to them is the will of Allah.
