A jirga is a tribal council. Dir and Wari are in Pakistan. It is a good sign that the government will not accept the jirga's ruling, but this nevertheless indicates why we don't see more moderate Muslims speaking out. In this case as in many other cases, those who question established belief and practice are threatened with death. "Jirga to kill anyone reporting honour killing cases to police," from the Daily Times of Pakistan, with thanks to Andrew Bostom:
DIR: Anyone reporting an honour killing case to the police or filing a case with the court will be killed by the jirga (tribal court) since the publicising of such cases has brought a bad name to the area, Malik Faiz Muhammad, a member of the Nihag-Wari jirga in Upper Dir, said on Friday. The Nihag-Dara Wari jirga had issued a controversial verdict in favour of honour killing around 15 days ago, declaring it a permissible act.
A Wari police station official said that over 150 people had attended the jirga, but Malik Faiz told Daily Times that the jirga consisted of more than 4,000 people representing the entire area.
“We stick to our verdict that honour killing is permissible and those who commit it will not be liable to any punishment. We will also not allow the aggrieved party to report the case to the police or file the case before a court. We will kill those who will violate the jirga verdict,” he said.
Malik Faiz said that the jirga would investigate such cases and punish those found guilty on its own. He said that the jirga members were ready to sacrifice their lives to uphold their verdict....
The jirga also declared that no action would be taken against anyone killing a robber. Jirga participants said that they would defend any oppressed person taking shelter in the area, but pledged action against those sheltering aggressors....
Sajid Mohmand, Upper Dir senior superintendent of police (SSP), said that the government would not accept the jirga’s “illegal” verdict on honour killings, adding that all such cases would be registered and those found guilty would be punished according to the due process of law.
That PR thing again. Nothing wrong with honour killing itself, only the bad publicity it brings. Here we are talking about a cultural and tribal matter, but you see the same skewed priorities when people object to criticism of stonings and floggings because they are bad for the image of Islam.
Who is the "aggrieved party" here? A woman is usually honour-killed by one of her "owners", that is her father, brothers or husband. Nobody else has an interest in the case. Unless you count the victim herself, who is not only dead, but never counted for much in the first place.
So I guess reporting this isn´t an option:
Pakistan: 14-Year-Old Shot Five Times, Survived
What about doing something about the problem (the killing, not the "reporting of honour killing"-part)?
Sounds to me like the truth is coming to light. They must squash ANYTHING that shows how lying, deceiving, murdering and maniacal they really are.
Hide the truth! Hide the savagery! We must protect ourselves from women getting justice!!! We must protect ourselves from the world knowing how vile we are and how badly we treat our women and girls!!
They can't get it through their thick idiot islam filled heads, how wrong it is to treat women this way.
Makes me realized more and more that Islam is no friend to women, period.
What is going on is the bringing into the disinfecting via the bright light of truth, what is going on in the Muslim world against non-Muslims.
Where does the fearless leader of pakistan stand on this horrible issue of cruel unjustice? The jirga groups are the real criminals in all muslim countries. They are the ones to be done away with.
Other tribal council says to kill council members who tell honor killers to kill tattletales.
And third council clarified this directive, adding:
Council members who kill other council members should be put to death by any honor killer, or tattletale, in the town.
Meanwhile, mirror makers in Terhan have declared that their wares will henceforth not reflect Jews or Crusaders -on pain of being smashed.
Who would ever have expected this?
Obviously not an expression of conscience.
More likely a worry about future earthquake aid from those stupid western do-gooders.
If it wasn't true it would be perfect for Monty Python.(I will kill anyone who says we kill anybody).
We need to use the reflexive appeal to force in the Muslim mind against itself. If they want to shoot first and ask questions later, give them a list of names.
Problem solved.
"Anyone reporting an honour killing...will be killed...since the publicising of such cases has brought a bad name to area."
Anyone think that honour killings might be bringing a bad name to the area?
