There have been so may excuses that muslims have made for islam, that it is worth keeping a tab on them.

Here are a few I can remember

1. The sura or text has been taken out of context. When shown that the context reinforced the sura, we had

Rebecca JW - there is no need to worry about the Cardinal's posture. A Cardinal is nearly untouchable - even Nazis and Communists rarely threatened them. His only superior is the Pope, and as a rule he can be quite impervious to any kind of convinction or pressure. When a Cardinal is a bad man - such as Mahoney in LA - the result can be disastrous; but I already knew Pell for one of the most forward-looking, fearless, orthodox and strong-minded leaders in the world Church, and a very successful shepherd of his people. And it so happens that the Anglican Archbishop of Sydney is also said to be strong, orthodox and brave. Australia does seem luck in her pastors.

A friend of mine is American, has lived his whole life of 50+ years in the USA but has traveled extensively (to among other places, Greece and Egypt), has been a devout Greek Orthodox Christian for decades, and is currently on a mission in Uganda helping a small community of black African Christians build a school. I've known him to be a Lefty and we've had our disagreements about the problem of Islam. I hadn't been in touch with him for over three years. When I discovered his personal blog recently, and noticed an article he reproduced approvingly about how the evil West (mostly the USA, of course) is to a great degree to blame for, or at least is fomenting, the horrors in Sudan, I had to email him and advise him to at least check out Jihad Watch and educate himself about the scourge of Islam. Here was his reply to me:

Your friend sounds almost like the twin of one of my own friends back in Eastern Europe. He is steeped in Eastern Orthodox Church matters.

To him and to many in the Church circles there, nothing could be worse than Protestantism, contrary to the received wisdom about the "quarrel" between Catholicism and Orthodoxy. They despise the theology, the ethos, the whole spirit of it. Thence they despise America. They are somewhat in awe of what they perceive as the "piety" of Islam, its aggressive anti-secular drive.

The mental image of of 'seething' Muslims gives me great cheer.

I applaud the Cardinal's honesty and courage.

But, as Archimedes noted yesterday, I wish that the Cardinal had thought this part of his statement through:

"In the Muslim understanding, the Koran comes directly from God, unmediated. Muhammad simply wrote down God’s eternal and immutable words as they were dictated to him by the Archangel Gabriel."

Considering that Pickthall's translation of sura 7:157 states:

"Those who follow the messenger, the Prophet who can neither read nor write,..."

It would be difficult for Mohammad to write that he could not write.

But, I did send an email of support to the Cardinal.

Maybe the Cardinal can visit the gibungous Muslim tent in London for some of that there "interfaith dialogue."

ovidius, Yes, my friend is quite anti-Protestant (particularly anti-American-Protestant). He also tends, more or less in keeping with his Church, to accent the eschatological glory over the immanent mystery of history, and combines that tendency with a profound distrust of all nation-states (of course, particularly the American nation-state) and a conviction that there was some proto-Communism practiced by the early Israelites and Apostolic Christians, superior to the evil Capitalism which the modern West (again, particularly the USA) has megalomaniacally foisted on the world.

I wouldn't say he's exactly "in awe" of Muslim piety; he probably considers them to be an "Abrahamic" cousin religion; but my friend is strictly orthodox (with both an omicron and an Omega) and doesn't for a minute think Muslims are any less benighted, soteriologically, than are American Protestants.

My main point is that my unusually well-educated and intelligent American friend seems to be practically illiterate about the problem of Islam, and willfully, comfortably so.

The only thing a muslim fears more than an armed infidel is the TRUTH. Cardinal Pell, I salute you and wish you well.

Thanks, Robert Spencer or his sit-in for taking my last statement off this blog. Now in the aftermath it strikes me as almost embarrassing. But like any western person it happens that I was out at the pub and had a few refreshing drinks. Coming back home to my PC (personal computer) i could not stand the ravings of this Naseem entity any longer, so I adressed the entity with a threat... well, this threat was not impossible, considering I have learned a lot from the "blackfellas" of Australia´s Top End...

( there are about 800.000 blackfellas left up there) If you forward this concern to any white Australian they will treat you as a pro-blackfella ideological idiot who is taking up their cause without knowing whats going on.. Of course, these Blackfellas are not catholic and do not want to be, after all they have their Dreamtime.
So all these white Australians padding the shoulder of their Sydney cardinal Mr. Pell is a good thing for the cause of JW, but to the blackfellas of the north Sydney is 3500km away and it would be useless to address those Sydneysiders. This is the ‘big secret’ for Islam
That the terrorist are acting on the Islam’s very own religious text. That everything the terrorist are doing has been sanctioned by the Koran. So that in effect these terrorist are "doing God's /Allah’s will". And in this case it will be difficult, if not unlawful, in Islam, to oppose these terrorists directly.

While the Muslim Councils attempt to increase the power and influence Islamic has in non Islamic countries, they expect or rather demand that everyone go along with the pretext that Islam is indeed peaceful.

The Catholic Church can help, as it has as many members as Islam and possibly more (I have a feeling, that Islam is loosing more people than it is gaining these days). If members of the Catholic Church speak out and let people know what is really written in this book, then this will be heard by and possibly have an influence on, many in the community, such as teachers, librarians and policy makers.

The article by Cardinal Pell has ben reproduced in the latest issue of
Quadrant magazine. Quadrant is an Australian polical/literary magazine in
the style of, say, the New Crierian or the English Spectator Magazine.
(Quadrant once received, probably inadvertently, some funding from the

On a separate tack, I went to a Greens public meeting with one of the blue
scarf ladies. The meeting was entitled "Racism and the Law - are you
getting a fair deal?" The convenor was the Grens senator Lee Rhiannon.
There were a number of invited speakers including Malikeh Michaels an
Auburn Grens councillor as well as a former NSW policeman turned academic
Michael Kenedy. The motion to be put to the meeting related to the use of
the police descriptor "Middle Eastern apperance" Somewhat amusingly the
only person who knew anything about policing - Kenedy - said (albeit
heavily qualified) these descriptors were useful. That position did not
disturb the meeting overly much and the motion was passed with two
dissenters!! Michaels, it turned out, is a convert to Islam and is married
to an Egyptian. She publicly carried all the Islamic baggage icluding, as
usual, the plight of the Palestinians. Certain politcal parties are in feeding
frenzy circling the Islamic vote

Whever there is a public meeting on Islam in Sydney I will be there with
my (metaphorical) metalstorm. The psuedonym metalstorm is based on an
Austrlian designed and built electronic gun. It holds the world record of
1,000,000 rounds per minute.

I read the quran too, and was rather shocked about the unveiled threats and violence in there. The same stuff can be found in the bible too of course, but christianity is older and had time to develop. I'm not really a bible hugger and Jesus supporter, for me he wasn't the son of God, but at least he wasn't a child molester. For all I know.
It's good that people know what's the real message of the quran. We don't need male-dominated religions any more.

Whenever Islamics behave criminally or otherwise disgrace themselves ( ie often) he is the one trotted out to stand in front of the TV cameras and lie straightfaced. One gem that comes to mind , following (yet another ) gang rape / smash 'n grab/ car -jacking etc. spree by Lebanese "youth" he came out with the assertion that Lebanese youth were better behaved and more socially well adjusted than Australian youth . A statement at great odds with the many court cases, gaol places, stabbing and shooting cases (including the shooting up of a police station in an almost exclusively Lebanese suburb) documented with almost tediously predictable regularity in newspapers.
The great man recently scored himself a permanent social security benefit due to his " stress -disorder" stemming from his being in the constant media spotlight.

The guy deserves every bit of your high style: the phrasing, the cadence, the word choice (with one exception, "unagressive," which is an awful choice, and I think you know it) as well as the modern austerity: no fawning lexical and syntactic arabesques when addressing a superior and a possible employer, not even the overt begging for patronage that was the rule back then.

Finally the local people had had enough and unfortunately, riots were the result instead of the more sensible paths of protest.

I am not a Christian or Jew either, but even I know that there is nothing like this in the Bible:

As for "having time to develop", the difference between Christianity and Islam is not their age, but their teachings. The Qur'an is the immutable word of Allah; it will not change, cannot change, in 100 years, 600 years, or 6000 years. The Bible could undergo examination and debate and re-interpretation. Islam would call this blasphemy, and the penalty for blasphemy is, well, you know.

I disagree that all religions are basically the same. There is something fundamentally different about Islam.

I cannot imagine a better use of our tax dollars. Perhaps the sudden retirement of Porter Goss will bring new possibilities for comprehension of the jihad at Langley. And if the writings of JW can hasten the U.S. exit from Iraq, then we should funnel 0.1% of the money saved (not even including the lives saved) to JW as a small token of our appreciation.

I'm thinking of General Ulysses Grant, later President Grant, who after saving the Union from destruction, retired to write his autobiography. I believe that the Australian Green Party gets half its votes from Muslims. When Bush visited Canberra a few years back, they pinned pictures of Australian detainees Hicks & Habib on to their chests as if these Islamists were national heroes, and they went nuts about the new anti-terror laws. They stood outside my local polling booth (Sydney) last election with a sign saying “FREE THE REFUGEES” – in reference to detention camps full of Muslims who entered the country in a variety of bogus ways. You would think that cutting down trees and slaughtering whales would be their main beef, but it isn’t. Even something as harmless and logical as wanting immigrants to speak English so they can talk to the rest of us, is considered “racist” in their opinion.

Regarding Cardinal Pell upsetting the muslims, he has long been an advocate of orthodox Catholicism. If you google "George Pell" and "rainbow sash" you will get near a thousand hits.

He has upset the gay activists by refusing them communion when they wear their rainbow sashes and demand the Eucharist.

He's always been a staunch supporter of the Church. No weaselling around and trying not to upset people, and I don't recall him ever backing down when he's taken a stand.

Don't expect a backdown on this, either.

On a personal note, many years ago, as a recent convert to Catholicism, I was honoured to meet the then Archbishop. I wasn't quite up to speed on All Things RC, and I'm still getting there. It was at a confirmation ceremony, and the atmosphere was amazing. All the kids and their families had to get their photos taken with the cardinal (not me, though. Bummer about that!)

I've still got the photos even though I'm no longer in communication with the family involved. I'll have to take them out and frame them, I'm thinking.

Having seen the good Cardinal interviewed recently on EWTN, I was aware that he viewed the current dialogue with Islam a totally one sided affair. He also claimed that the dialogue would
change under the current Papacy. I am thrilled that such a learned man is willing to challenge the ignorant amongst us who constantly claim that we have nothing to fear from Islam. If one member of every family were to read the Quran throughout the West, the World view concerning Islam and Muslims world wide would be altered forever. The Quran is the source today not only for the terror the Western world is facing, but also the Muslims themselves.
Let us hope that there will be much more of this coming from within the Catholic Church in the months to come.

regarding your statement that most people in Sydney are wary of Islamics. That may be true in your immediate circle of friends . I wish it were true of mine.
Until recently I worked in a shop with many customers of all ages. I would have to say most were antagonistic to the US govt. and it was very, very trendy to embrace multicult and express sympathy for the "refugees".
I'm afraid that PC dominance prevails.

Some poster previously suggested that it will take a nuclear incident in the West before people will admit the truth.
I think even then lefties and many others who refuse to engage their faculties will still be talking about "root causes " and blaming the West.
When I was a teenagerin the 1960s/70s it was the Right who were dogmatic , set in their ways, unchanging .
Now it is the left who have this predictable default position on all issues which will not allow for debate or discussion.

As others have said, Muslims vote for Greens in large percentages. Not for any environmental concerns but because the Greens believe in throwing the doors wide open to every non-contributing bludger, no questions asked, no qualifications necessary. Even the poor and unemployable and those needing long-term medical care. How they expect us to pay for this, who knows? Especially given they are so anti-business, anti-farming, anti-everything. I think they expect us not to notice the devastation they'll wreak, because another of their policies is that everyone should have free access to all the drugs they want. We'd be too stoned to notice.

The problem with islam is fundamentally ideological.They cant change their ideology otherwise islam will cease to exist. They cant change their holy book because it is too late. No wonder when these weaknesses are pointed out, the only option the moslem has is to react violently.We read both the Arabic and English versions and they say the same thing.
Every sensible moslem should be thinking very seriously on how to leave the religion.
