From AP:
MANCHESTER, England — Police on Wednesday arrested nine people suspected of giving support to terrorism outside Britain, Greater Manchester Police said.Police served warrants at a number of addresses beginning at 3 a.m. local time, the force said. About 500 officers were involved in the operation, and searches were continuing at several locations, police said.
Greater Manchester Police said those arrested were "suspected of facilitating terrorism abroad," but gave no details of the suspected offenses. One suspect was released within hours.
"We are not talking today about a direct threat to the U.K.," said Michael Todd, chief constable of Greater Manchester Police.
"We are talking about the facilitation of terrorism overseas. That could include funding, providing support and encouragement to terrorists," he said.
Police would not comment on a report by Press Association, the British news agency, that said the arrests were related to terrorism in Iraq...
One of the things I would do if I were President would be to sit the Shiites and the Sunnis down and say, ‘Stop the bullshit,’” said Mr. McCain, according to Shirley Cloyes DioGuardi, an invitee, and two other guests.
The exclusive audience included R.N.C. finance chair Lewis Eisenberg, Blackstone Group co-founder Peter G. Peterson, former Secretary of the Navy John F. Lehman and Gail Hilson, the politically influential socialite who has organized events for Mr. McCain in the past.
“What kind of a country do we want to be?” Mr. McCain asked his audience, walking around in the middle of a horseshoe-shaped table as he proceeded to answer his own question.
He cautioned against ghettoizing immigrants, which he noted has brought about disastrous results in France, and criticized elements in his own party as “nativist” before lambasting the punditry of Rush Limbaugh, Lou Dobbs and Michael Savage for helping to “fuel the problem,” according to two of the sources.
(this man wants to be President. He understands nothing of ISLAM or the way he talks the border security.where is PATTON..OR JOHN WAYNE...OR ANYBODY WHO AINT P.C.?)
Hey this is the second positive move by the British in the past few days. I am beginning to get some hope after all.
The British authorities play it cagey. In the past mistakes have been made but now things have changed. The threat from Jihad is understood. The time when terrorist claiming to be asylum seekers, due to their crimes in or against other countries, getting a free ride under the so called covenant of security is over. Their groups will be disrupted, infiltrated, broken up, and where evidence is compelling against individuals, then they will be arrested, tried, imprisoned and deported. As time goes on it will become more regular. There will be less fuss as it becomes just another function. Let 'em get on with it.

I do not live in the US but got the impression McCain was a reasonable man. So after all he is not?
Who do you think would be a good president?
Frankly I am amazed they only got 9. After seeing these people protest over the Danish cartoons I would have thought they had enough evidence to round up thousands!
Shouldn't there be at least four zeroes after that numeral?
If they're serious, I mean.
Or five?
Gramfan-
John McCain is pandering to local Hispanic voters in his state and destroying any credibility he has on the national level.
Tom Tancredo and Curt Weldon would be my choice for a serious presidential ticket in 2008.
One for national [border] security, they other for international [anti-terrorism] security.
Most of the rest of both parties' candidates are the usual power-pimps slavering for the illusory future Hispanic vote.
Or grovelling to the myth of our Muslim "allies" in the "War on Terror" (AKA "The Long War", or "The War Against the Enemy Who We Dare Not Name", ad absurdum).
Gramfan....one who tells us the truth about islam...I have not see this person yet...but that is my idea President.
The 9 should have been 9,000,000, but it is a start.
If you lock up all the people it is hard for jihad to be waged...........
Tancredo
When are they going to address the demographic threat. That is far more serious.
So why aren't we doing this?
oh, TOM TANCREDO for me too!
Tom Tancredo and Curt Weldon are among the very few honest, patriotic republicans left and i would gladly support both of them,
Unfortunately, the republicanparty has become so corrupt and has distanced itself so far from the true conservative principles that these two are persona non grata in the republican party.
I`m sad to say that i think the republicanparty is beyound redemption, and in the meantime i could not vote democrat at gunpoint.
The only viable option, despite the fact that a third party candidate doesn`t stand much chances,is the Constitution Party.

For those of us who live in Manchester, the most irritating thing has been bloody police helicopters whirring overhead all day.
Curiously, the two guys arrested in Manchester (the figure of nine refers to the whole country) didn't live in primarily Muslim areas. Rusholme, where I live, is about 40% Muslim, Longsight up the road 45-50%; but these guys were picked up in Whalley Range, which is also quite nearby but much more mixed - mostly bedsits and student digs.
I suppose no one would notice them come and go ...
WSW, thanks for the location info, the BBC is reporting the cops taking a car in Moss Side.
I think the UK Intelligence services have a lot of experience taking on foreign culture threats and they have started to establish Islamic agents that will infiltrate radical groups across the country and Pakistan etc.
Now I'm going to lambaste profitsbeard and Texican, because you guys have not learnt from history. The British have a lot of experience in locking up Tribes, ethnic groups, radicals etc. The most recent was the internment of radical Irish terrorists. It did not work. It radicalised the community, and facilitated the terrorists. The UK have tried death squads taking out know terrorist. That didn't work (without a full war footing). So now that policy is a lot more 'nuanced'.
Locking up a whole community will invoke analogies to Nazism / Communism, and will radically reduce the UK's ability to influence the world community.
But I think it's guy's like Texican who have loads of weapons, but are not prepared to occupy a country (in order to subjugate it) are a micro version of existing US policy.
Wild Slutty Womens, did you hear about the murder a couple of years ago in Salford (not far from you). I doubt it...it hardly made the news.
http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/s/129/129557_au_pair_is_victim_of_stab_horror.html
"Terezia Sternbergerova, aged 25, suffered several wounds to her stomach when she was attacked seemingly at random by a man brandishing a six-inch kitchen knife."
"It is understood that moments before the incident a man was seen reading from the Koran and carrying a knife near the location."
"The head of Salford police, Chief Supt Brian Wroe, has said the incident is not linked to any extremists and is being treated by detectives as a one-off motiveless attack."
The man in question is clearly linked to the murder in the story.
It was reported in the local paper but didn't make the national press.
According to the TV news, one of the arrested was raising funds for a charity that ostensibly helped Libyan and Sudanese children but which appeared a US list of organisations funding terrorism.
Interesting. Moss Side is between here and Whalley Range; more black than Muslim.
Celsius, thanks to the link to the, um, horrible story, which I hadn't seen before. Salford is a pit, mind you, Manchester's much nicer. He could just have been a random nutter, but you have to wonder what he was finding in the Koran that seemed so congenial ...
Albion, you're right about internment, pretty much - it just made people feel all martyred and self-righteous. But we did put the Mosleys under house arrest during WW2, didn't we? And personally, this Catholic of Irish extraction had noooooo problem with what happened in Gibraltar.

Albion:
1. Interring the Japanese in America during WWII kept them from being able to perform fifth column attacks within America. Even if only one fifth column attack was prevented during WWII, then this interment was successful.
2. The Brits failed in Ireland for the battle was for independence of a people that were born and raised in Ireland not immigrants in Ireland trying to become free from England.
3. Americans have the desire to destroy terrorism in all countries across the globe, but the liberalism, elitism and PCness of our federal government has prevented this. During WWII America did what was necessary to destroy Germany and Japan and occupied and governed both with troops until both countries became peaceful and rejoined the peaceful nations of the world.
4. iraq and afghan are lost causes for these two wars will not be fought to won just as Vietnam was not fought by our federal government to be won. You have to destroy your enemies means of waging war regardless of where those means are or you can not win.
5. America will remain free as long as American citizens have the right to keep and bare arms. When the American federal government tries to ban arms as has been done in England and Australia, there will be armed redress by the American citizens to their government. This item in the Bill of Rights was established to allow the citizens of America to protect themselves against foreign invaders and their own government if needed. The right to keep and bear arms by the American citizen is unique among all governments.
Personal question: What are you going to do when the nukes go off in Britain???
Your comments and stances show a bent toward liberalism, total federal government control and surrender to tyranny instead of standing up and doing what is required to maintain your Freedoms.
He that surrenders his rights and freedoms for security to his government no longer has rights, freedoms or security.
The Texican.
Freedom, the only choice at any cost and the cost will be immense.

I'll be acting out a scene from '28 days later'.
I disagree that I have abjugated responsibility to my government and am therefore a slave. I want my government to be in charge of the assassination squads, and I want to confront the radical at the mosque, and the demonstrator in Trafalgar Sq. There are a lot of British people looking for a legitimate vechile to contribute to the subjigation of Radical Islam. But we don't want to intern whole communities.
Albion, the only problem with not wanting whole communities (muslims) interned is, the ones left out of the internment will continue with the jihad. This isn't going to stop as long as there is an islamic cult.
Not all muslims are Jihadis but there will be a certain fraction of the muslim community who will be active Jihadis, and a much larger fraction, who though not active, will support the Jihad in other ways. As the muslim population expands by immigration and demography, the absolute numbers of Jihadis expands, thus making it more dificult for security services to prevent terrorist outrages.
Now at first sight, it is right that we do not intern a whole community, but that means that we will be susceptible to war being waged on us from within, for ever and a day, and by people who have been given sanctuary in this country. Life will thus get ever more hazardous for Infidels in their own country, with no end in sight.
Well, DP111 , how do you sort them out? Do you just take those that attend mosques? Do you just take the mohammedans that are a certain age? Do you take the ones that are on government rolls? Do you just take the ones that declare they are jihadists?
They are brainwashed since birth. Taught to hate since birth.
If they're apostates, leave those alone. But a practicing mohammedan...I say round them up. And stop immigration of practicing mo's.

How can you tell the difference, when the terrorists hide among the not so terroristic???
The mos will not give up their own.
The violent and oppressive cult of islam is not salvageable. It tenets can not be made peaceful. It is not acceptable to treat children and women as the male mos do or to murder those that will not convert or that reject islam.
Outlaw the violent and oppressive cult of islam and give the mos a choice give up islam or leave to save the free nations of the world.
The Texican.
Freedom, the only choice at any cost and the cost will be immense.
freewoman posted: But a practicing mohammedan...I say round them up. And stop immigration of practicing mo's.
Sadly, that is one way.
My view, long held, is that we need to have a separation from the islamic world. As a start one needs to take muslims (and the koran), at their own words, and agree wholeheartedly that there is indeed a dar ul islam and a dar ul harb, and for the good of humanity, infidels and muslims alike, it is better to live apart in respective worlds. Interaction through trade or electronic communications is fine, but long term settlement is uncomfortable for all.
Harsh as this is, it is the most humane way forward. What frightens me is that we are moving towards a new world war that is quite unlike previous world wars. This world war will be a civil war ie a global civil war - the very worst type imaginable. Else we are looking forward to a Three Conjecture scenario leading to deaths on an unprecedented scale.
Separation leaves hope for the future for everybody. Politically impossible at the moment? - Yes. Yet precedents are there in recent history, where exchanges of populations were considered the only way to secure a reasonably peaceful outcome. It does not need to be done in one fell swoop - but over a period of time, say 30 years, would have reduced the muslim population in the West to such an extent, that it no longer poses a threat.
Continuing on the present path of unmanaged immigration, particularly muslim immigration, results in the nation losing its long held cultural identity, and the destruction of the nation itself - it is the road to anarchy. This is what is happening in Britain, Europe and North America, as one sees so graphically in Britain - the destruction of law and order.
The link below illustrates the sheer inanity of what is happening in Blair's Britain, and the destruction of what was once a very law abiding nation.
CRIMINAL-FRIENDLY BRITAIN AGAIN
http://pcwatch.blogspot.com/
The only good thing is, that all this BS is going to eventually lead to withdrawal from the EU convention, and hopefully, a more sensible attitude to law and order, and above all, terrorism, and its causes and roots. If that does not happen then vigiliantism will return, and that effectively means anarchy and the end of the civic state.
"America will remain free as long as American citizens have the right to keep and bare arms" - The Texican.
A strange thing about Afghanistan and Iraq is that in the former an AK47 is almoat a form of male jewellry while in the latter every family keeps one in the cupboard under the stairs. All it seems to have done is forced whatever regime was on top to be more brutal.
When Milosevic attacked Croatia, on the other hand, all they had to stop him was the police force: so they just went out and bought two lorry loads of kalashnikovs on the black market.
wallyUk-
The difference is, the US Constitution explicitly recognizes the right of the citizens, in order to discourage or stop an oppressive government, to retain their natural freedom to be armed in the defense of personal liberty, while, in Islamic societies, arms are merely for terrorizing anybody who wants freedom from Islam's dictatorial theocratric nightmare state.
A surgeon and Zarqawi both uses knives, too.
It's the aims, not the arms.
ANTI-TERRORIST police who arrested eight men yesterday in a series of armed raids believe that they may have thwarted the next wave of suicide bomb attacks on British and US forces in Iraq.
