It was a gala event: a conference in Denmark trying to add some heft to the trumped-up, politically manipulative concept of "Islamophobia," and featuring some leading dhimmi speakers: Prince Alfred of Liechtenstein; Bob Hawke, former Prime Minister of Australia; Phil Rees of the BBC; and London Mayor Ken Livingstone. Then there was the celebrated convert to Islam Yvonne Ridley.

It seems that Fjordman is right.
British television station The Islam Channel hoped to capitalise on the infamy brought upon the city after the publication of the Mohammed cartoons by holding the international conference 'Islamophobia: a dilemma in the West' as a way to create a dialogue and debunk myths.[...]
Despite being billed as an international conference, and the largest of its kind since the row over the Mohammed cartoons exploded this winter, the majority of those participating were Muslim.
Organisers had invited a broad spectrum of Danish politicians, members of the press and other public figures, but only a handful of ethnic Danes were to be found amongst the 900 people in attendance.
'We had hoped to see more Danes take part in the debate. We invited the prime minister to open the conference and all Danish ministers to participate. We invited political parties, even the Danish People's Party, the mayor of Copenhagen - and the Queen,' Ali said.

I am glad that the Danes had the sense, on the whole, to avoid this affair. Why should anyone try to justify the insane reaction to the Danish cartoons by Muslims and their governments.

Turn-about is fair play, or words to that effect. Whenever Reform minded Muslims (read "Moderate Muslims") hold conferences attempting to persuade Muslims to ignore the more despicable contents of their texts, they get ignored, and the only participants turn out to be Dhimmis. In this case, the good thing is that Infidels boycotted the event, and it was left to local Muslims to prop it up. Coupled with Imam Laben (anybody notice how easy it may be to make a Freudian slip and type "Laden" there) leaving Denmark, probably a sign that Denmark is not making a positive turn away from Islamophilia.
Hopefully, this turns out to be a template at least for the Nordic nations, particularly Sweden, if not for larger Europe in general, like France and Britain.
What does "Phil Rees of the BBC" do at the BBC? And why was Bob Hawke, of the Australian Labor Party, willing to accept -- or didn't he? More on the non-Muslims who actually showed up for the propaganda farce would be welcome. Livingston is a given, Ridley a revert. The others?

I'd like to think that this was an instance of the Danish public becoming "fed-up" with the inculcation upon the West of its need to be "open" to Moslem sensitivities. I fear that it it may represent more a weariness and complacency, wishful thinking perhaps, that common sense will prevail and that the problem will go away. If so, such passivity is just not good enough.
The Moslems are making all of the demands upon their host socieites and this is just plain bass-ackwards. A proactive approach must be adopted in order to see that Moslems are held more stringently to account for their egregious misuse of Western social freedoms. If Nazi collaborators were interned or at least closely monitored during the Second World War, then why isn't the same level of scrutiny applied to the new Moslem communities gracing the West? The threat from Islam seems scarcely less grave than that posed by the Nazis 5 years ago.

Am I the only one who feels insulted by the mere title 'Islamophobia: a dilemma in the West'?
I find the term Islamophobia insulting in itself, implying as it does that Western apprehension about the violent intolerance of Islam as it is practiced by more or less predominant sects in the Middle East is pathological.
I fail to see how it could ever be a "dilemma" (please enlighten me) but nonetheless they imply that the problem is "in the West".
Really, I doubt that...
I have an easy solution: The Muslims in the Western countries could more vocally and unequivocally denounce violence as a political (or theological) argument.
Several high profile moderate Muslims in the newly founded network "Demokratiske Muslimer" (Democratic Muslims) have actually done so. (And yes, there is such a thing as moderate Muslims here in Denmark; only question is to what extent they are respected in the Muslim communities.)
But the quiet majority is still alarmingly quiet...

If these meetings are anything like the ones in Canada they are a exercise in forcing Islam on people by-proxy.
CAIR-can and other groups have held these lie-fests to portray islam as a faith of peace , but the press releases have a tag-line about dress-codes to respect Islamic modesty and Muslims in attendance.
CAIR-can protested Canada wanting Al-Jazerra
TV to be on a time-delay and censor hate-speech or acts to incite violence against groups in Canada, BUT CAIR-can has no problem censoring who gets into Mosques or the dress-code to attend Islamic meetings about Peace and Pluralism.

To be honest, this conference also reveals an astonishing and rather pathetic ignorance on the part of the organizers. Of all the guests involved, only Livingstone is anything more than a has-been or never-has-been. A conference that tries to make out that Bob Hawke of Australia - a joke even in a country that does not take its politicians very seriously - and the Prince of Liechtenstein - known throughout Europe as the little country that lives on money too dirty for Switzerland or Jersey to take - were in any way impressive guests, or that they would have made anyone feel that it had any weight, does not exactly show a great deal of political maturity or knowledge of Europe and the West. It sounds to me as if the organizers were faced with the collapse of their plans long before the conference opened, but did not want to throw in the towel, and so resolved to go ahead with any guest they could possibly dredge up. What I find interesting is that, apart from Livingstone, they did not even manage to bring in any of the ever-reliable mess of pseudo-left pols such as Schroeder or Diliberto or a single one of Zapatero's ministers. Either even this kind of scum is beginning to wake up - or perhaps the conference was not sufficiently well endowed. Certainly, Schroeder these days does not come cheap, what with Russian oil contracts and all.

That sounds like a realistic description of what happened. But in a sense I also find it positive; It shows that the muslims are having trouble organizing support amongst really powerful western politicians. Perhaps the tide is turning.
The tide may be turning in Denmark, but there's still a long way to go if we think of Europe as a whole.
Danish people are very outspoken and independent in their thinking and they must see the insanity of the cartoon protests very clearly.
I think the cartoon rage helped the Danes, but the same is not necessarily true for Sweden, in which the problems caused by muslim immigration are far worse.
Bully for the Danes. For what it is worth, on the street, this attitude is prevalent in Germany as well. With unemployment high in the East, the youth see immigrants standing in line to get more handout money and driving off in Mercedes. Does tend to breed resentment.
Don't count the average European out, yet either.

I believe that because we have a possibly unparalleled debate on Islam in Denmark, attempts to tar opponents with the -phobia brush make little sense here. Sure, there are dhimmi news outlets (Politiken being the most nauseating of them all) that try to spin or gloss over unpalatable facts, but the genie was let out of the bottle a long time ago, and no gullible "dialogue" or "tolerance" initiatives will ever put it back there again.
This is what I hope will also eventually happen in other Eurabian countries. Sadly, it may take a terrorist attack or widespread riots to trigger this long overdue glasnost.

Mr Hawke is very fond of seeing his photo in the paper or column inches of newspapers devoted to his movements about the globe. Don't forget, when he came to power in 1983 the demand by world leaders to meet him was so great that he got that ample arse of his on a Qantas jet and was soon headed for the USA and other places where he was in demand.
