It is using up money, with sunk costs (including the costs of getting out of Iraq, and treating neary 20,000 wounded for long into the future) now getting close to $400 billion, which money, had it been spent on wind, solar, and nuclear energy, on ethanol fuels, on subsides to mass transit systems, on all kinds of things (and with the advances shared with all other energy consumers, so as to work to achieve, not the false becuase meaningless goal of "American independence from Middle Eastern oil," but rather the goal of reducing, as far as possible, the amount of discretionary income available for the Jihad (not only that of terror or combat, but that of propaganda, with mosques, madrasas, and Da'wa campaigns, as well as armies of Western hirelings doing the Arab and especially Saudi bidding).
History will not absolve Bush for not realizing that he is using up political capital -- the will of people to resist Islam, or even to recognize that there are many ways, far more effective and cheaper ways, to resist it than clump-clump-clump "boots on the ground" stuff in Iraq and Afghanistan. Wherever possible, and it is possible in both places, rely on assorted groups to keep each other busy and in check.
This roll-up-our-sleeves Yankee can-doism (of the well-known "the impossible takes a little longer" school of sloganeering) is misplaced, and dangerous. Combined with messianism -- the idiotic idea that everyone "loves freedom" (no they don't; many people like the Complete Regulation of Life that is Islam -- and there are far more primitives in any society, than there are the non-primitives whom the Americans kept mistaking for "the real Iraq" -- Chalabi, Allawi, Ambassador Rend al-Rahim Francke. Hugh's comment (#1) is too wide-ranging to argue with (from alternative fuels to Fidel Castro), but I certainly agree him on this point: if Iran is successful in developing nuclear weapons, history will not absolve Bush. Nor will it absolve the pacifists and appeasers, foreign and domestic, whose "useful idiocy" serves only the interests of one of the most dangerous regimes of the past fifty years. I would argue that Iraq is part of the same fight (it sure is for Iran and Al Qaeda), but that's for another time.

What I will never understand is why not do the same. Iran has a insurgents too. Lets arm them. In fact we should pull out of Iraq. If China and Russia want to play games by giving technology to Iran then we should give nuclear technology to Taiwan, Japan, Mongolia, Poland, and make all sorts of military deals with countries like the Ukraine. Muslims living in the West made the choice to live in the West and either arrived their legally or illegally. If Muslims want to live under sharia, they need to move back to countries where sharia is law.
And, if there were so few problems living under sharia law and Islam is so superior, why do Muslims leave the supposed "paradise" of their Islamic government countries? It is not the responsibility of the West to accommodate Muslims and make them feel comfortable.
If Muslims are unable to live in the West without trying to force every aspect of our government and society to conform to them...leave...the sooner the better. Return to your "Islamic paradise" in countries governed by Islam. If it was so great....why did they leave?

Naseem I live in the north of England in a town with a sizable Muslim community that have integrated themselves into the society under British law.
But if Muslims now wish to live under Sharia law then as far as I am concerned they can. As long as Christians can live and worship in peace in Muslim lands.
Surely you cannot ask that we accomodate your wishes without expecting the same in return. In every town in my county I can find at least one Mosque. The Muslims who worship in these places go without fear of retribution. The same cannot be said of Christians in Muslim lands.

If this story is true and it probably is, it will change nothing. None of us should be surprised a muslim nation is helping the terrorists. Notice I do not call them “insurgents” at that would not include al qaeda as they are foreigners and not Iraqis. Insurgents fight to free their own country from invaders and that is clearly not the case. The legally elected Iraqi government works with the American and Iraqi troops against the terrorists. I have yet to hear of one school, power station, water treatment plant or any other building or type of infrastructure necessary to support human life coming from al qaeda. Do you really think there would be a "massive retaliation" from the West? Is the West really capable of "massive retaliation" anymore, no matter what the provocation?
Look at what happened on 9-11. At the time, it was feared that as many as 6,000 people were killed--three times as many as at Pearl Harbor in December 1941. Even a proportionate response to that would involve the deaths of several thousand enemy civilians too, yes? And yet we heard the same voices of weakness: Use restraint. Don't over-react. Take no military action if even one (!!!) civilian may get hurt. Don't bomb in civilian areas. Don't bomb on Ramadan. OK, maybe bomb for 24 hours and then declare a unilateral "pause for peace" and wait to see how the enemy reacts. Stop bombing before it gets really cold in Afghanistan. Etc. etc.
And so even in response to the 9-11 outrage, we fought a very restrained, very limited, politically correct and even "humanitarian" war, sending some of our pilots into harm's way not to fire weapons but drop food parcels.
I really fear that the will of the West has become so degenerate that we wouldn't use nuclear weapons in retaliation, even if the enemy has already attacked us with nuclear weapons with frightful loss of American lives.

The Good News
The current success of the jihad can be explained by one major factor: petrodollars. By a stroke of (bad) luck, most of the oil in the world is located in Islamic lands. Take that away, and there's not much left of their economies. There is a limit to the oil in the world, it is not renewable (in the span of human lifetimes). They know that too. This is their one chance to spread their influence in the world. If we can wait them out for 20-30 years, the oil will be gone, and the threat will be lessened.
The Bad News
The ruling class of Saudi Arabia, Dubai, UAE are smart enough to invest their money, not in infrastructure in their own country, but in ownership in the West. After the oil is gone, they will still own a significant part of the U.S. economy, thanks in part to the close relationship the current Administration has with the Arab sheiks. At that point, they will still be benefitting from the labor of Westerners; we will be working to improve their lot in life. Think about that.
Well it seems to me that as a state of war exists between Islam and the rest of the world we should just be able to seize their assets and utilize them in the war effort.
The West has not, up till now fought a war. We have made our boys brandish a lollypop in in the left, and the gun in the right. I have handled a gun, and I know it takes two hands.
