However,,,all the PC idiots said that the Afghani's would starve! No cash crop!

Let them grow proper food crops!

I have always suspected this, both at local level and international.

Need I bring up the fact that the nation with the world's worst heroin problem is Iran? With all of it coming from Afghanistan?

The piece ends with the ludicrous conclusion "America faces a big burden if it is not to see drugs taking over from fundamentalism as the challenge Afghanistan poses to the world." As if, "fundamentalism" - i.e., resurgent Islam - has been wholly checked in Afghanistan, and is not likely to remain a problem for the foreseeable future. (It's a permanent problem - c.f. Turkey.) It just goes to show that many people still do not appreciate just what a serious and deep-rooted (14-centuries old) matter the global jihad is. However, maybe The Business has reliable figures there.

William Lind at Defense and the National Interest considers the issue may be pulling the U.S. in two different directions, but admits his thoughts are based on a questionable source:

This prompts the obvious observation. Any Muslim can justify, or be helped to justify, his criminal activity in the Western world as an act of Jihad. The Norwegian imam described in Bruce Bawer's "While England Slept" as telling his flock they were right to steal from Infidels because in the absence of a formal jizyah this was to be considered their jizyah, and those who elsewhre -- from the Sydney rapists who were out to show those Aussie (Infidel) girls a thing or two, have at their disposal the ready belief that they can do no wrong, and in fact are doing right, by raping, stealing, threatening, making life hell for, whatever Infidels are around.

This makes criminal activity much easier. I guess Mr. Badruddoza is unaware of the reliance the Islamic Republic of Iran puts on the availability of cheap heroin to keep its very underemployed and large population of young males drugged out of their skulls and unlikely to rise up against the mullahocracy.

While Hugh is right, as usual, I'd go a step further. Use this as a pretext to ban all trade with dar-ul-Islam. If we have to buy oil, keep that on with the likes of Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, now Libya, et al, but why do we have to trade with Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan and those we don't need to trade with?

No need to bomb opium fields.

Just send in unnamed CIA buyers (posing as mafiosos) to purchase all of the crops, truck the poppy residue away, and simply burn it.

Result?

The farmers are content, and prosperous (and not tempted by poverty into the ranks of the Taliban for looting and vengeance).

The heroin is never processed.

And the multifarious savings would pay for the project in:

fewer bombs needed, fewer addicts created, fewer police required to chase those fewer addicts, and less drug billions going to criminal cartels from the final (far more expensive) refined drugs, some of which will end up financing the jihad.

Meanwhile, the Peace Corps and other NGO's could slowly encourage the cultivation of real crops to replace the poppy- (amaranth, switch grass, etc?-) which will grow in the harsh Afghan terrain, and give a decent return on the crops to the farmers.

Buy it, don't bomb it.

Then burn it, don't spread it.

Maybe the new head of the CIA will be a more realpolitik machiavellian s.o.b. who can see that money will convince ( AKA bribe) these "tribal leaders" into better compiance than more boy scout speeches and crude crop eradication plans.

Profitsbeard - interesting concept. If the crops were cheap enough that could make some sense, temporarily. But basically, are people in the west who get into that kind of shit great contributors anyway? Maybe we should be grateful for the 'survival of the fittest' element of weak-willed druggies taking themselves out enthusiastically.
